take a socket, set it over the valve spring and hit with mallet (rubber hammer), this will save you the step of taking it off, and no, it wont fly apart, it only moves like 1/4 of an inch
you should actually lubricate that tap before cleaning out the threads. taps are extremely sharp so you want to reduce the risk of shaving anything off of the good threads.

Not specifically carbon but good to breakdown oils
