As a new collector to the black series and someone who just finished rebels thrawn was a must have for my collection as I just got the new rebels characters so I was scared with the after market I couldn’t find him. I’m so glad that hasbro uses the archive collection to give newer collectors like me the opportunity to get characters I couldn’t get before

I do have the original (not the exclusive). If they had included him with the Rebels Box Mural repacks I might have gotten another but the better face isn’t enough of a difference for me since we will likely get an entirely new one from the Ahsoka series. Thanks for the awesome comparison Mike!
So happy I found Thrawn this time. I wanted him so bad when he came out for TLJ but never saw him and I just happened to stumble across him at Target like a week ago. I did see the SDCC Thrawn at a collectible store, someone sold theirs, but I wasn’t going to pay the price for him

I was going to replace mine with Archive but realized the old thrawn looks like how he appears on Rebels and Archive looks like the Expanded Universe/book version. So it's like having both versions of thrawn so I kept both.

Dang it Mike! I was going to totally skip this one since we have the original release Grand Admiral Thrawn. Now after watching your comparison, I am really liking the new Thrawn. I really like the photo real paint apps on this one. And look at that rank insignia plate, it just pops now. Sad part is that I had this figure in my hands today at Gamestop, now I'll probably never see it again. Still haven't seen Cody anywhere. Great video Mike!
I think a desperately needed re-release/archive is Palpatine (hopefully with chair, lightning effects, lightsaber too...). That guy is almost at Hot Toys price, pure lunacy.
I think with Palpatine, it would just be a re-release like they’ve done with other Phase 3 releases like Gamorrean Guard, Grievous, the shock trooper, and Commander Gree.

Great comparison! I have herd his arms won't cross infront of him like the box cover. That is disappointing. But if I find him in the wild you gave me enough positive thoughts to get him.
I got him the first time around and I'm actually ok with not upgrading. The newer paint does look a bit more...pristine...but it's not enough of an upgrade to spend another $20-25 and taking up the limited shelf space. It hurts me to say that considering Thrawn is my favorite Star Wars character, but yeah...if I didn't have the original I'd 100% be all over this and I'm still glad they're upgrading figures. I just wish they'd upgrade accessories because he's severely lacking accessories and that makes me sad.

I took my original and repainted a ML Purpleman head for it. Just a Smug looking Blue Guy head without the Rebels oversized brow. I prefer the competent Zahn version instead of the Disney cartoon (he shouldn't loose to space Aladdin ever other week).
The old one looks like Boris Karloff. I have always hated the Timothy Zahn books. This character was the highlight by far. They spent more time reminding you about the movies you had obviously already seen than it did driving the story . . .
I completely agree with the comment. Although I wouldn’t say I hate the Timothy Zahn books. I was obsessed when they came out. But I’ve softened on them substantially in the 20 years since they’ve been out.
I think calling the older figure "garbage" now is a little harsh. Literally just the painting has been updated, so anyone who doesn't mind that detail should be happy with the older figure if they already have it.
You can use the old thrawn as a rebels version because of the yellow on the eyes and less shading makes him look just like how he looks in rebels. The new Archive looks like his book/ EU original look. So now you can have both versions of thrawn
Stop doing reviews on figures that have already come out.... because now I have to go get a figure I already have just because you pointed out how much better the face is. 🤠🤠🤠

I honestly didn’t think the old one was very bad at all until seeing the new one in person. There’s a night and day difference.

I’ve never seen the SDCC one in person, but I do know they usually put a little more effort into those.
