    C#5 is definetly not mitchs highest chest note. Highest recorded note, yes but he could force out a few more semitones

      The same could be said for Austin, but all of these vocal range videos are simply based off of recorded notes. We don't know what they've done off camera!

    I feel like Mitch can hold a great tone over a wider range. Austin's tone seemed to decrease in quality quite rapidly towards the higher falsetto notes.

  • @conniestone2806
    @conniestone2806 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    The difference for me isn't how high each can go, it's how they sound doing it. I feel Austin's highest tenor notes (and even others here in the battle) showed a big difference in the clarity of each. Austin's voice is always clear and I can understand his words. I'm not a fan of anyone, male or female who screeches high notes. Mitch has a level I really like him at, but the higher he goes, the less fond of his voice I am. Thanks a lot for your efforts to put this together. Am sure it takes a lot of work.

    Austin can reach a little higher in chest, but I prefer Mitch’s voice. And I also think that Mitch could still get a few more semitones above his highest *recorded* falsetto note.

    • @conniestone2806
      @conniestone2806 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      in a screech type tone yes, but is that pretty to people? It actually hurts my ears, but then I have very sensitive hearing so maybe that's why. Glad we all can enjoy them and our favorites don't have to be the same.

      @@conniestone2806 Funny enough, since writing that comment three years ago, my opinion has changed quite a bit. I started appreciating Austin a lot more. They're on a similar level to me now. I tens to prefer Mitch's higher chest notes, but his falsetto is very sharp and reminds me of flageolet, which is a lot sharper (which is not great in my opinion) but it does extend the range of a falsetto voice.

  • @PerihelionSummer
    @PerihelionSummer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Both are amazing; however I think they have different strengths. Mitch comfortably hits all the crazy high notes of course, in Defying Gravity for example. He has an insane vocal range, great mix, and amazing vocal control (just listen to Gold cover by Pentatonix). Austin though has a wonderful low register for a tenor. His chest notes, even the lower ones, sounded totally easy and effortless. They were louder, fuller, and overall more pleasing than Mitch’s (IMO).

    If growl notes count, then whistle notes should count as well and Mitch has FANTASTIC whistle notes. Counting those, he has six octaves easily.

    • @tylerthepianoman4686
      @tylerthepianoman4686 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      At the end of the video he counted whistle notes towards mitch's final range so that they both got 3 points. Austin wins with growl, high chest, high falsetto. Mitch wins with low chest, high mixed, and then full range!

      Mitch has better technique, and can hold high notes lover for sure. Not to mention he's basically a male alto with insanely controlled C5's. It's not a contest, as far as tenors go mitch destroys him. But Mitch isn't a true tenor, he's higher than a tenor.

    • @SkelloSwarm
      @SkelloSwarm 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Mitch is 100% tenor he just has a good range. Mitch is no male alto he just has really good high notes and the fact the he can chest an F2 could fesibly classify him as a baritone. Mitch be a tenor all right he's just good

    One quick correction... At 12:40, that's not Austin singing that high note, it's bass singer, Tim Foust. ☺️
    If you skip to 9:00, it shows Tim singing the high part.

    Austin really does have a lovely rich tone, but Mitch’s voice seems so much more interesting and versatile- I think he can just do a lot more with his voice technically , including adapting his sound across the different musical genres. I could listen to Mitch sing all day every day and never get bored, he sings like an angel. 👍

    Too many Pentatonix diehard fans don’t really appreciate the fact that Austin is also very talented and is definitely close to Mitch. They are both some of the best if not the best tenors in the world

    • @alexemmerich3152
      @alexemmerich3152 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      im a huge fan of both- but mitch is technically a countertenor, so the high notes werent fair. i prefer mitch’s voice because its more my style (country music isnt reeeeally my thing) but i LOVE austin’s tone and the emotion he puts into his voice. austin’s voice also sounds more trained to me- he seems to have more control over his belts and riffs. i just have to go with mitch because ptx was the first a capella group i listened to and i like the pure clarity of his voice.

    yes i know everyone prefers Mitch the queen, however Ptx tends to showcase the higher pitched voices more than home free does, that being said I do prefer Austin Brown, his voice is more full and pleasing to listen to. There is nothing at all wrong with Mitch's voice his tones just sound thinner than Austin's, I truly believe they are both very Talented singers and performers, and I am glad we have them both to listen to.

    • @tylerthepianoman4686

      There's this thing called whistle tones, that Mariah Carey is known for doing. And Mitch does them pretty well. Some people don't count it as part of the range but some do. I don't think Austin has a recording of himself doing whistle notes, so they didn't put it as part of his full range, but Mitch has, so that's why. I think Tomi wanted Austin and Mitch to be tied in this video so he had to help out Mitch a bit!

    Wait what? I'm a bass and can just barely reach the 4th octave in chest but I can go higher than both of them in falsetto, granted it being disconected and sounding abit.. bad. is the tenor falsetto range smaller than that of the lower baritones or bass singers falsetto register? then again i've never heard a bass singers falsetto sounding particularly good in the upper range so i asume it chould simply be a question of how you define the vocal range

    • @calebcooper2841
      @calebcooper2841 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      basses generally have a larger range and better falsetto than tenors because of the thickness of our vocal cords basses can sing tenor but tenors can't sing bass. pretty ironic and unfair to the tenors.

Austin is clearly in mix at A4 already, and he likely starts mixing way below that so that it's a smooth transition, all good singers do this. Do you guys think that you're supposed to drag your chest voice as high as it goes AND THEN go into mix to sing higher?
