I was invited on a short Volkswagen road trip to the Kanchanaburi province of Thailand, by Amazing Thailand (the official Tourism Authority of Thailand), and I was happy to be a part of it.
We set off from Bangkok, and drove to Kanchanaburi town first. From there we stopped off at the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery for a quick visit before heading over to the famous Bridge Over River Kwai (สะพานข้ามแม่น้ำแคว).
Along the river, just down the road from the bridge we ate lunch at Keeree Tara Restaurant (ร้าน คีรีธารา). There was a set meal already placed at our tables, and the food was overall quite good.
After lunch we set off on the road again, Ying and I were in a private VW van (pretty cool), and drove over to Tham Kra Sae (ถ้ำกระแซ), which is a scenic section of the railroad, and a cave.
We kept on driving until we arrived at Thong Pha Phum (ทองผาภูมิ) and we arrived at our hotel for the evening, which was Phu Iyara Resert (ภูไอยรา รีสอร์ท). The hotel was basic but alright.
Dinner was good, but unfortunately the light was so poor, I couldn't get any good video.
The next morning we woke up early and headed to the morning market. The views were beautiful and the market was very pleasant.
After walking around the market, we then headed over to Wat Thakanun (วัดท่าขนุน), a temple situated on the side of the mountain. It was nice and quiet.
After the market and temple we headed back to the hotel and ate a simple breakfast of khao tom - rice soup.
Then we headed to the river to do some kayaking, which turned into quite an adventure, but it was a lot of fun!

Dorin Sekhose Thank you Dorin, are you still living in Nagaland? I loved visiting there.

Great video. I've been on rivers (western US) quite a bit so when I saw you shooting in the kayak, I was thinking "oh no, this is not going to end well."
Hey Tosh T haha, yes it does happen. But luckily it was just a small camera, my wife was on the shore with my better camera.
Love the videos Mark! You should visit Vietnam!
awesome !
I have been there and great trip
Before i went to thailand i had told myself i will try all kind of food they have including the worms but not the pork ( because they carry tapeworm). When my friend ordered it i could not resist their pork meat and had it every day lol. your videos keep my memories alive.. Good job
It must be fun to travel around and try different stuff.
Riz2336, it is fun, but I do a lot of work (sitting at the computer) along with it.
Great video Mark, the BBQ sweet pork sounds great. I like the cabin, not much bathroom privacy, where is the shower.
How is the coffee there? Your facial expressions always enhance the food, you could be eating a rock but your expressions would make me think its so delicious Did you eat any snake yet? keep up the good work
Looking pretty dapper in that polo shirt Mark.
Thanks David Nash
Excellent vlog mark;)..
Thank you Enrique Ramirez
Next time..come and see me Mark..I'll show you places off the tourist map that will blow your mind!
You should do more fun non food things too! We love looking for things to do in different places.

What an awesome road trip! Very cool to see what the bridge over the river kwai looks like now. Noticed you guys had an Ewa Marine for your dslr. How do you like them? Ive used mine loads but stick to the Gopro mostly nowadays.
Hey Travizeo, the travel video company thank you for watching. Actually, that was a friend of mine (in the front of the kayak), so I haven't ever used one myself. Do you ever pick up audio (like talking) with a GoPro?
Oh man what a trip! That resturont looked nice...that cave with the Buddhas wow!!! U look supper happy in the vw going to hotel. Kewl moden beds.,was this white things on wall ...a.c ? So they work good? I thank those are in Bali to/asia? U look supper happy on the terrace with chiken soup ...this video was deff different then your norm food videos. Wow. This is vlogg two. I'm in kantanaburi now making a video now. I think this city has changed a lot
hey mark..first: great videos, love your channel..i will be in bangkok end of the year(not sure yet) and i would be honored to share a meal with you..keep it up.. greets from germany..
Hi MrTRYTOO thank you very much. I'm not sure exactly where I'll be, we might take a trip to visit family in the US, but do let me know, and thank you.
As a german i love Volkswagen T2 vans 555 I had my first driving experience with a T2, best van in the world.
It is always fun to see your video. I went to same destinations in Kanchanaburi and of course to the Erawan Waterfall ;-)
It's the first time that i can see your wife in video ;-)
Hi tarek85 good to hear that, they are so cool. Glad you went to Kanchanaburi as well.
its a lovely place.. remember my tour to the tiger temple ...
I saw that look when you added more pepper! Try a zip lock bag for your wallet and camera next time with a little fishing floaty on it. Works every time. We do a little bank fishing and my husband has fallen in a few times (I am laughing so hard my ribs hurt!). Loved the views. I travel through you and your videos. Good eating Mark!
Hi See Canon, that needed some serious pepper! Cool, thank you for the tip.
hi mark, how cool a hippie bus caravan that would be neat. the scenery there was beautiful even though you got your camera wet.did they get mad having to wait 4 hours on you guys lol. great vid thx :)
xcessive2008 Thanks, the good thing was that they had a number of vehicles, so one group left ahead of us and one van stayed behind for us. It was a fun trip.
Though I am Indian...I miss Thailand very badly
Wow! what a nice video! Nice change-up there buckaroo! If you missed the exit point how did you get rescued?
terry palmore Hey Terry, so one of the guides, came paddling down as fast as he could and caught up with us. But there were no exits on the rive for the next 4 hours. But it was worth it!
I was there two weeks ago - the same restaurant.
Mark that was a fine adventure and TY for sharing. I'm curious how much did that tour cost and was the room and meals included?
Hey bebebutterfield1 thank you for watching. So this trip was a media trip, organized by Tourism Thailand, so we didn't pay, so not sure how much. But I know I could take public transportation for about $10 and then probably find a lodge / guest house for about $20 - $30 per night.
Love your videos Mark. Just one quick question, what camera model was you had with you? Thanks!
Hey J Villa a Canon S110.
Hey Mark Wiens Great video! Looks like you had so much fun. What was the total cost of this adventure trip? In thai baht? I live in Sukhumvit Soi 39 and would like to try this.
Man, I love those old VW vans. The had a street event here last year with a ton of them and some had amazing customizations. You could live out of one if you really wanted. Food looked great and the view from the restaurant was awesome. Great place for a meal. The lodge looked much nicer than what I expected. How much was this travel package per person?
Hey Perdomot, glad you love them too. When I was riding in them, I was think, I gotta get one, we could drive all around and live out of it. I was invited by Tourism Thailand, so we didn't have to pay. But I know there are many tours that take trips to Kanchanaburi, but I really have no clue how much a package would cost.
Heading to Kanchanaburi for Songkran and using your TH-cam channel to study up! Looking for some awesome adventure activities, gonna be hot! Do you know what the best ziplining / action / rafting adventure experience there is?
Please do more blogs man... It's a lot of work for you I'm sure, but by reading some of the comments, I know there are a lot of people like myself that want to see your vlogs too :)
jaymeez Thank you so much for the feedback and your support. Will do more vlogs!
love it, man i wish i can do that for a living :p
fas bah Thank you Fas
Nice place to visit! Join you here Mark!~Canon S110?Look good,i think! And i want to try GoPro,Expensive??
Hey honeypiesweet03 yah a Canon S110. GoPro is not too expensive, but I don't like it because of the sound quality and the fisheye lens.
nostalgia, as i used to watch this vid in 2014 and so weird cause i'm older than you now haha
4 hours!? must've been quite an experience!
evoGage a fun experience!
Not all will agree with me, I know, but the loud music background is dreadful. It did not fit in with the beauty and serenity of the forested mountains and flowing rivers. Nevertheless, I gave you a thumbs up. So sorry you got your camera soppin' wet. Were you able to dry it off or did you have to replace it? By the way, I'll be visiting Kanchanaburi in a couple of months. Will continue to follow your vlogs.
I have to say: I really liked your hair when it was long and in a pony tail. For some reason, it made you really look like just a traveling country kind of guy. The short hair is nice too though. Especially when its deadly hot outside. Thank you for the videos!
Lina McGrath Hey Lina, thank you very much. I remember the day I cut my hair about 4 years ago, my head was all of a sudden so cool! Thank you for watching.
for some reason, this road trip feels so 80's, maybe it's the music or the reminiscing Volkswagen. lol.
Hey ***** yah I think you're right about that - a retro road trip.
4 hours! wow
Mark....just wondering what kind of camera are u using while u was walking around filming yourself...??? The quality is very good...I wanna buy one to use on my next trip....
Hi kchung9209 that was a Canon S110, highly recommend.
Wow!
So after missing the finish....weren't you afraid there might be a waterfall?
GoldGunsandGolf Haha, yes that was definitely a concern in my head. So we ended up pulling over to the side, and waited for a bit, and then one of the guides came down the river and caught us, and he let us know the river would open up downstream... and no waterfalls!
4 hours? Wow. *wide-eyed-head-tilt* WOW.
Haha, yup *****, but so beautiful
Mark are these travel to places expensive to you? And almost at 100,000 subscribers :O
Hi GoHardNH, this was a trip with Amazing Thailand, so I didn't pay, but traveling here solo (which I've done previously) is quite affordable - taking local transportation and staying at lodges / guest houses. I'll be vlogging more about travel in Thailand and covering the expenses soon. Thank you!
That was awesome. Thanks for sharing.Sorry about the camera
chris alf No problem Chris, is was well worth it!
At 0:54 you speak Thai and it was so cute :)
Thank you Saungkyelphyu, I have a lot to practice still!
you look good in white shirt Mark and nice haircut...... short.
There are several waterproof cameras personally I don't have em but you can try :D
Yes, I'm going to get one.
watching you VDO is like killing me alive ......... so hungry
Kanchanaburi is one of most popular natural travel city in Thailand.
Falls, Caves , Mountains, River ,etc.
You cannot go all of them within 3 days. It's large natural city.
tonydebua Thanks, yes it's a beautiful province of Thailand.
Were you guys the only ones who missed the finish line? I would've panicked if it was me! lol!
Hi elizayv there were 3 of us kayaks, but it was a lot of fun!
Ya agree with u....
You should buy an SJ 4000 camera, which is a Chinese copy of the Gopro Hero. It comes with a waterproof housing and all the accessories, and is cheap.
***** Thank you for the suggestion, I'm sure I could find that somewhere in Bangkok, will check it out.
Mark, have you ever thought about traveling to places like bolivia, peru, or morocco, iceland? etc. lol know thatd be expensive
Lucas Durham-Styles Hey Lucas, yes, and I would love to. I visited Peru and Ecuador a few years ago before ever making videos, and really enjoyed it. Definitely if I can save a bit more money, I would love to. Where are you from?
oh that's pretty cool. would love to see those. how's the food in Peru. I'm from Chattanooga, TN USA. lol the south. went to thailand for about five months a couple of years ago. best time of my life, unfortunately we had to leave cause my mom got in an accident, but she healed up in Chiang Mai RAM. She went back last year again which was really good for her. I was wanting to do a trip to Nepal soon and was looking up some videos about the street food and I see 'Mark Wiens Street Food, Kathmandu'. You have some cool videos
go pro!!!
u should for once, have a session talk with the person behind the camera :)
ishak pratama Thank you, that's my wife. But right now, she's still not comfortable to be on camera, so we'll see.
please post a video on how to ride the bus in bangkok
Keitaro Ikeda Thanks for the idea, will write that down.
You tell me who did that to your hair and I'll get them for you lol
Spectacular Mark, but next time GoPro it. :)
Hey MsLansones yah that would have been really good for the water. But the thing is, I tested one out, but wasn't happy with the sound quality - so I bought a Canon S110 - good sound quality... but unfortunately not waterproof. Do you have experience with GoPro?
Personally no, but I have seen other TH-camrs use the GoPro and you are right about the quality of the sound, it isn't that great but at least it would protect your footage.
I absolutely love the vlogs Mark. Please keep making them. :)
Mark Wiens The waterproof housing for the GoPro won't allow it to pick up sound well, you are quite literally hearing the surroundings from inside a box. Maybe they will figure something out in the future. Most GoPro videos just have music over the original sound. There are GoPro mic adapters though, making the camera less compact, of course.
Thank you MsLansones and Wayne Madison, I'm thinking about a Canon Powershot D30, which is a waterproof one, hopefully sound quality will be alright, I'm going to check it out.
Hi mark i have watched your videos and enjoy them immensly ,kanchanaburi cemetery is a very sacred place and is kept in immaculate condition .The men who lie there are allied soldier sailors and airmen who during the war were enslaved by the japanese forces to build the thai /burma railway many died under horrific conditions ,i wish you could have shown a bit more of it ,maybe in another video , on the 25 of april every year you will see a memorial service held there for the australian and new zealand servicemen that lie there at peace i hope one day to experience seeing this place for myself and paying my respects to those sacrificed there lives for our life today .
Hey mark I hope you win the food hero contest!
Thank you shutup12345u, unfortunately I had to drop out as I wasn't available for the interview... but maybe again next time.
oh thats unfortunate indeed but keep making great videos and oppoturnities will come to you :)
4 hours? Fuck! I'm sure it was a lovely 4 hours though
mart3h It was a beautiful 4 hours!
