I've never commented on a video in all the years I've been watching TH-cam, but I just had to say thank you for creating/posting this one, as I found it incredibly useful. Most importantly for me, there are tons of visual excerpts inserted throughout to assist in understanding the wide-ranging examples. Plus it has better production value than most instructional clips, and the host has a clear speaking voice with a steady cadence to it. Bonus: receiving instruction from another woman in a predominantly male domain!

you missed an important aspect. Bushings are better suited in locations where there's some rotation, but it's not a full rotation and totates in slow speeds, eg. like the pivots on the Ibis ripmo. Placing a bearing where there's say 15* of rotation renders the bearing a bit redundant as it poses little benefits performance-wise, wears quickly at a certain part of the bearing and adds weight and cost.

not always the case. Bearings are not used in some flat pedals, jockey wheels.

    • @laurynasjagelo5075

@@ivanteo1973 you missed my point. I mentioned that bushing hold additional advantage in locations of partial rotation, eg. suspension pivots, where the rotation is not 360* but rather a fraction, eg.20*
I'm aware that bushing are used in full rotation applications.

As a weight counter for my MTB , absolutely changing all the bearings to bushings . And it’s rather easy to service. Only hubs and BB I see the reason to use bearing .😂

I think you need to collab with gcn ollie on this topic. I would love to see an experiment with drivetrain efficiency, rolling resistance, comparing worn, dirty, new, bushing vs bearing etc to see how much of a difference it makes for us normal ppl. Going from a TDF slick to a maxxis assegai for example..but maybe I'm weird

One correction. In the video it's mentioned that bushings are not used in hubs. However, Mavic does use plastic bushings on the several road and MTB hubs.

hello bikeshop, I have been told by Anna I can swap out my bushings for better quality ones. Er ok! what quality do you have already? no clue there is no information provided by the manufacturer. Well what makes you think you don't already have good bushings? Umm good point. Here is a good suggestion don't be swayed by videos sponsored by bushing companies and just ride your bike till it breaks then comeback.

One of pedals on my bike wasnt spinning freely, so I took it off and took it apart. To my surprise, my stock pedals are bushing pedals. I was expecting to find some ball bearings or sealed rollers in the pedals, so they have a cheap feel to them.
My first instinct was to replace them ASAP. However, after a slight loosening, the pedal seems to be spin a bit better. Also, they’ve never let me down. I think I am going to delay my upgrade for the time being.
I wasnt sure if I should apply some grease to make the pedal spin more freely.

#AskGMBNTech I recently purchased a mid drive kit and ran into some issues. This pertains to gearing which is why I thought I'd post it here: I have a full sus xc bike which I am in the process of electrifying, I have the motor kit (which I fixed according to recommendations), a shimano LG kit (basically rear cassette + mech + shifter). However, after sizing my chain up according to recommendations, the chain always seems to jump from the front chain ring. What gives?

If you remove your bearings then take them to a bearing trader you can save £££££’s. If you tell them what application you are using them for they can point you in the right direction on how to upgrade your standard worn out bearings

@@thescerigai ball bearings in partial rotation apps just dig notches in the races.
      Full compliment needles work better.
But you'll find in industrial and automotive applications bronze bushes in partial rotation applications.

    • @EnglertRacing96
      @EnglertRacing96 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The other issue with a ball in partial rotation applications is that it pushes the grease away from where it does rotate into the areas where the ball does not rotate to. Where as in full rotation applications the grease is constantly redistributed.

Bearing in a pedal saving 2 or 3 watts!!??? Naaaa ...don't think so. In a pedal rotating maximum two revolutions per second ? I have no data on it but I don't believe that could be more than a fraction of a watt difference!

    • @Finnspin_unicycles
