- Horse Creek in East Tennessee is rated as a 6/10 by OnX so this should be a good test for my stock 2005 Jeep Liberty. I’m pretty excited as Hurricane Creek, the Liberty’s first test was only rated as a 4/10. Meaning this should be much harder, so will my mom’s old Liberty make it? Let's hope OnX actually got this right! Merry Christmas and I apologize to the Liberty fans... these take a while to edit as I have to create the waypoints.
Channel Members have access to our filming schedule and I want you to be in the videos! The Black Bear crew gets additional easy to edit videos but offer more up to date info on trails (since guides take a while to put together). The Holy Cross crew gets more say in what videos get edited for the channel (video credits and early looks at Trail Guide edits). / @coloradomallcrawlers
About Colorado Mallcrawlers:
We are a channel that aims to show incredible off-road trails and our adventures to get through them with stock or your not so typical off-road vehicles. If that sounds like a fun watch, we'd love to have you as a subscriber! The channel membership was created to give our community the best trail info on youtube quicker since trail/overland guides take a while to create. Video Editors are Dewie Jones and Drew Hunter. We're always looking for more offroad video editors as we film a ton of trails (100% of adsense goes to the editor).
Dewie's Current Vehicles:
2021 stock Jeep Wrangler Rubicon JL (CO)
2005 stock Jeep Liberty KJ Rocky Mountain Edition (TN)
2004 stock Jeep Wrangler Rubicon TJ (CO)

Merry Christmas! I wanted to get this done for the Liberty fans as this whole shakedown series was supposed to be done before summer wheeling season 2023. Unfortunately, my work/life was chaotic this year putting me behind on editing. I'm definitely thankful for Drew in helping me edit this year, but he couldn't do Horse Creek as there is no TrailsOffroad info (yet). Also, the Liberty will be on the trails again in 2024 (its been down all of 2023). It still needs some work, but I feel its good to take on the trails again!
So glad to see the Liberty back up! I’m the guy with one just like it so I’m excited to see this return. Also, thanks for continuing your videos! Always excited to see a new one. Best of luck for the coming year!
Thank you and the same to you!
So excited to finally see the liberty again!!! I subscribed back when I bought my own jeep liberty just this past year and have been waiting to see more. I absolutely love these jeeps and am glad to see a bigger youtuber offroad one of these without removing the street legal properties. If I'm being honest, it was your videos of this car that pushed me to upload offroad videos onto my channel and take the big leap into off-roading my Liberty for the first time(actually first time ever off-roading). Can't wait to see what's in store for shakedown number 3 and hope you have a merry Christmas!!!
I subscribed just for your Liberty videos and they do not disappoint. Thank you for taking the time to make it.
We'll be moving to the Kingston, TN area in 3 years and I can't wait. The entire Appalachian area is absolutely beautiful! Thanks!
It sure is beautiful there!
My 03 has a simple OME lift and 265/70/16's and it completely transformed my Liberty. Literally every spot I used to get stuck on stock I just breeze right through without any issues. Definitely consider lifting (OME not spacer lifts, those are atrocious) and go with a bigger tire. Cannot emphasize how game changing it is. Rear Torq Locker ($400 lunchbox locker) is up next for me.
I probably will try locker and MTs first. Then I’ll add a lift later. OME for sure tho.
@@coloradomallcrawlers can never go wrong with lockers! But something to keep in mind. The OE spec for the front springs is too soft so every Liberty sags significantly up front. And since the OE spec is soft, brand new springs will 100% sag after just a few months. The front OME spring is stiffer and doesn't sag. Lockers are obviously amazing but you'll likely be hurting your capabilities a bit even with the locker because of the lowerer than what it should be ride height. Either way, I'm excited as hell to see where you take this build!
@@coloradomallcrawlersoh and I don't remember if it was addressed in the original video, but the Liberty front lower ball joint is another terrible design. Guaranteed to pop at some point early. Replace them asap if you haven't already with the MOOG greasable ball joints.
Yes, lift and tires make a huge difference. My 2005 Renegade is rather extreme (for a Liberty) 2.5" Frankenlift, JeepinbyAl upper A arms, 31x10.50 Goodyear Duratracs, ARB front bumper, JCR sliders, custom rear bumper, and a rear Ox locker and 4.10 gears, to be installed..
Two thumbs up for more Liberty content! Sometimes it is fun to take a stock truck out - I have a Liberty and a new TRD Off Road with lift/tires etc and enjoy driving both 👍👍
Right on! That is the way!
Liberty has a great turning radius for a 4x4
Yes it does!
I drive a Liberty and really enjoy the little Jeep too ! Quite capable and you can sleep inside too.
Yeah, that’s something I’ll try out one day!
Enjoying these videos. As a new Gladiator owner your information is great.
Glad you like them!
Nicely done as always! I was impressed by how well the Liberty performed.
Thank you buddy!
Libertys alway get under rated.
Admit it you wanted to drive through those mud / water holes again! ;) Was an unexpected and appreciated video on Christmas !!
lol, yeah!
This the Horse Creek run? Excited. Hope to do this trail in the next month or so.
It is!
@@coloradomallcrawlers NOICE.
Can’t wait to watch it. Merry Christmas!!
Merry Christmas to you!
Looks like a cool, very scenic trail. Good video! Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas!
I've got a 2007 liberty with the off road package. It's been a great little jeep for me. And very off road capable.
Awesome! Sounds like a great jeep.
What offroad package?
Merry Christmas Mallcrawlers!
Merry Christmas Speedy!
Merry Christmas! Nice video, keep them coming!
Merry Christmas to you!
Merry Christmas Buddy !!!! THANKS for This !!!!
Merry Christmas Mike! Of course, sorry I couldn’t get it done sooner.
Better Late than NEVER...LOL... CANT WAIT to see whats in store NEXT !!!! @@coloradomallcrawlers
@mikegallagher2732 mud, lots of mud was shakedown number 3 lol
The best money spent, as you very well know, is a locker in the rear diff. I have a 06 CRD and at the top of the list is a locker. My FJ40 has both front and rear lockers and it will go everywhere. ARB of course
Yeah, a rear locker would have made this trail a piece of cake for the liberty… it’s definitely the first mod after armor.
I got mying jeep liberty again.i missed those jeeps.
Heck yeah!
@@coloradomallcrawlers down the road.u think u could put a different size engine in it?
Merry Christmas! Love the Liberty videos…just in case you ever want to make it a little bit more capable, try upgrading to Old Man Emu springs, I did it to mine and it rides better than it did out of the dealership. Stay away from spacer lifts if possible. Also, a rear locker can really make these really capable
Merry Christmas! I’ll likely get new springs, but making it fully mechanically sound is my immediate next priority.
My brother and I made it to about the 16:30 mark in the snow with his 89 cherokee wagoneer and my 88 trooper in the snow. That rutted hillclimb got us. We've attempted 3 times or so now and still haven't made to to the end for one reason or another.
I bet with snow this would be a blast… that’s impressive! You’ll get it soon I’m sure.
another libby video! thank you, was waiting for it :)
Hopefully I’ll be able to get it to Colorado and start filming more here with it.
When you’re on spots that have you crossed up like the rocks around 9:50 if you will apply light brake pressure and modulate it while on the throttle you can help send power to the other wheels by applying brake pressure to the spinning wheels. Not as good as the newer jeeps BLD but it can make a big difference when wheeling open diffs.
True, this was done nearly immediately after filming hurricane creek on a vacation week I had then. I need more seat time to play with it.
@@coloradomallcrawlers seat time helps. It is odd at first hitting the brake to go and two foot driving but it don’t take long to get the hang of it. That liberty will be a nice addition to the fleet when you get it back to Colorado
"influencers" pitch onX because they're paid to pitch it. Nobody in their right mind would use a worse product that's more expensive. It's 99% marketing. Gaia is a superior product in every way. I have travelled New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, and Utah with Gaia to verify public land vs private. Never been let down.
Yes I know, they offered me a lot of money to pitch it (I indulged them to see what they were paying, but wasn’t going to take it, I’ve made two anti OnX vids). I think taking an OnX deal hurts your credibility as an offroader (I’ll give a pass to a recovery youtuber as it can serve them well). I manage an offroad trails facebook group and always have posts of OnX users getting in trouble because of the app. I don’t blame people tho, almost every video has an onx ad on it.
Merry Christmas Dewie. ⛄ So cool you got to hit some trails in Tennessee. Any different states in 2024?
Merry Christmas! If we get the 11 days on, 4 days off… I will be venturing out of state on those days off sometimes. We will definitely be covering Utah and Colorado tho.
@@coloradomallcrawlers Awesome! Looking forward to it.
22:59 measure from the centre of wheel to the edge of wheel arch at the front. stock height there is 19". you will know how low kj sits after all those years.
Yeah, it needs new springs for sure. If I can get it back to 9.7in, that’d be plenty. Armor will protect, Rear locker will do the rest.
@@coloradomallcrawlers do you have limited slip in rear? it helps greatly, but to be fair I have changed clutch packs to new.
Nah, no limited slip unfortunately
Hey Dewie, thank you for showing trails that sfan unbuilt Liberty can handle! I do have one question though, does your Liberty have a limited slip rear axle, or is it an open diff? I have an '06 with limited slip and have been wondering how it would do. Unfortunately, where I live, there aren't any trails that a stock suspension can safely navigate. I don't want to make a several hundred mile trip and not be able to pull off the trail run.
Thank you for your content. I really enjoy watching your travels!
Open diff, a limited slip sure would be useful and would have made this trail easier than it was. Good luck with finding trails!
@coloradomallcrawlers Hey buddy, thank you for the quick reply! One thing that burns my bacon more than just about anything else is, I will post a question looking for clarification (like I did here) and never get a response to it. I have had that occur more than once on this very topic and several more times on other topics. I have actually unsubbed from 2 channels after repeated attempts to get a question answered!
Oh man, I will say, TH-cam doesn’t always give us notifications of replies and it’s really rare to get a notification of reply to reply. We’re small so it’s pretty easy for me to stay on top of it… but I miss some.
i don't understand the confusion, it is very simple; the youtubers that promote onX are *PAID to promote onX*
onX is only as reliable as the person that rates the trails and everyone has a different opinion on what is difficult. onx probably works better on the designated and rated trails out west
And they came to me… they pay a lot. It’s not better out west and that’s why I don’t recommend them. TFL’s latest video was on kingston peak. OnX rates it a 6/10, but it’s a 4. I’ve tried filming Kingston twice and can’t get enough good footage to make a decent video out of it. True 6s are easy videos for me to make.
Is that a 2005 Liberty ? It doesnt look like it has brake lock diff’s traction control .. i have a 2006 with 1.5 inch Lift 30.4 inch R/T tires and a Trac-Lock rear diff and Brake Lock diffs , and totally rebuilt drive train brand new crate engine ,trans , transfer case , new diffs front and rear and Napa CV’s in the front which according to jeep forums are the best cv joints to get. Well except “RCV” cv’s bit they are $2,000 for the KJ and not needed unless you are making a rock crawler.. and my while suspension is Bilstein .. im a overlander camping/ fishing kinda guy, except winter then its all about the snow wheeling🤘 and let me tell ya that os where the KJ really shines i push snow with the bumper it goes threw it like nothing .. i love my KJ , plus it has bigger payload and towing capacity than the wrangler. One last thing the passenger compartment has so much more room im 6’3 and have plenty of room , where as in the wrangler my right knee hits the console , ya cant stretch your legs sideways in the wrangler Liberty is just alot better for us big guys , for me anyway .. and those are my thoughts😂..
Good info! 05, no brake lock. I’ll likely put a locker in it. Just need to get it fully mechanically sound.
What happens if you encounter another vehicle going the opposite direction?
Looks tight for a full size?
Should be fine as it’s just brush. So expect pinstripes, but I wouldn’t think a full size (truck, not earthroamer) couldn’t do it.
@@coloradomallcrawlers Excellent thanks! Pinstripes are normal for the big rigs and these trails, same for Hurricane.
Did any Libertys come with a locking rear differential?
I don’t believe so unfortunately
When all the XJs rust , is the Liberty the new XJ?
lol, it’d need a solid axle swap, but I do love my kJs
@@coloradomallcrawlers yeah that's what I mean.
Its its replacement but its garbage @off-roadingexplained8417
No they're not.
Liberty is garbage not a real jeep that replaced a real jeep, the xj.
I wheel with XJs, lol.
@@coloradomallcrawlers ?
And CJ owners would argue that they are the only REAL jeep. @@mblake0420The problem with Gatekeeping is the goal post is always moving depending on who is measuring...
Another one who does not know what they are talking about
@akemonjames lmao, I'm 40 and have owned every jeep model made from a 1945 to today
A True WASTE of STEEL and PLASTIC...😂😅
Definitely not… but I don’t care what people think. It’s a fun Jeep and I’ve had plenty of Jeeps over the years.
