I'm finally done gathering up the parts for myself to have a go at this, However a few things im planning on doing differently are: 1-instead of having the shoulder buttons be little numbs I plan on using Snes controller shoulder buttons, 2-including the functionality of the headphone jack into the SP 3-loved the idea with the CD case being a new screen BUT im going to add a smartphone screen protector for added safety from scuffs 4-going to take a DSi battery pack for longer life span and smaller foot print 5-adding a toggle switch for a second Hz crystal for "turbo mode" 6-incorporating both GB and GBA linkports and two that i actually would like a little input on would be: 7-sliding cartage port, like theres a little nub on the outside where it can be slid manually to accomodate GBA carts without cutting away at the shell 8-sleep mode, some sort of master switch that would turn off the screen, speaker and possibly disable the buttons(doubtful), very much like how the PsP's screen sleep mode and toggle for disabled buttons
I know your probably not reading this cause how old the video is but despite the wiring and board mounting job you did you did something that was virtually unheard of at time and something that’s still impressive
Nintendo really needs to release their own version of this as the Ultimate Retro edition Gamboy. I'm not saying mass produce it but a couple thousand as a special edition for enthusiasts.
KlingonCaptain That would be great if they did. Who knows maybe it is on the list of things to do for Nintendo I mean they made the NES Classic addition it would be pretty awesome if they do this as well. If Nintendo does do it they will likely only put like 30 games on it or something but the case and new LCD and likely new type of battery with the ability to recharge it would give a much better base to mod it to have something like a Raspberry pi zero installed in it with retro pi installed. Someone should start some sort of a petition website or something along those lines two drum up some interest from the Retro Gaming Community and present it to Nintendo showing them that there is enough interest and maybe they will eventually make one. who knows they might do it we will never know unless someone tries to get them to see how many people would actually be interested in getting one. :-)
That's really cool. I wish I could do that. I'm currently collecting gameboy pockets though. I might collect original gameboys after I'm done getting all the pockets I want.
Do a search for “Unistrand 100m Reel 7/0.2 Wire” This wire is multicore it’s the wire I used. I get it from rapid electronics. Would link to it but links are not allowed on youtube comments. Let me know how you get on.
I have never owned a colour but they look to have the same space inside. You would probably get away without having to cut a bigger hole for the screen so the screen may fit better. hope this helps
Hi john I did this using a Gameboy advance from ebay. Had broken hinges so got it for £10. This was the first time I had a go at this. I am going to make 2 more in the summer and may change a few things. I have some pictures in the link in description. I tried to show all the main points in the video. If you want more pictures of any part let me know.
Check out the video at 12:44.there are 2 wires soldered on the L and R tack switchers on the sp. Also later in the video I say how I had to remove one of the tack switchers as it got in the way of the new power switch. Also check out the pictures in the link. Hope this helps
What I did was use the original silicone springs/contact pads in conjunction with the original DMG board. I wired the traces on the DMG board directly to the SP board. No need to purchase tactile switches or anything like that, plus a lot less time spent trying to get everything aligned and mounted ;)
Some advice when using hot glue in projects like this. You shouldn't apply hot glue on your solder joints or to secure the wire to the solder. When you do this it's possible that the heat of the hot glue can resolder the wire from the joint and not notice it. It may not connect to the joint or over time the connection could pull lose. This is also the case with epoxy. Hot glue is great to hold parts in place, but does nothing to protect your solder joints in anyway. If you practice and learn how to solder properly your joints will not fail.
so it will read advance games but not older ones? i would check all your wires again. can you upload any high res pictures and send me a link so i can check it out for you. andrew
Gnm Software 2012 | Gnmpolicemata or you can just make a Raspberry pi portable game system with retro pi installed on it and you get all the gameboy games as well as other systems :-)
This is a great project and I am looking forward to have my own sp-in-old-GB-case. The only problem is that I don't know that much about electronics. Could you please help me with the wiring of A, B, up, down, select swiches (I can spot 4 pins when you show how to open holes, and then later you only use 2 of them to connect to the motherboard's swiches) as well as with the audio output pin and the potensiometer that regulates the audio, well more or less everthing that has to do with sottering and adding new parts (if I am not asking too mutch). Great job showing the connections that have to be made between the two on/off swiches. really liked your job
Oh, okay. And my last question is what type of wire did you use and? I bought some at a local store but it was too thick and it was the smallest wire they had. They said they could special order anything for a cheaper than retail price but they just need the brand.
Aaron Walker I'm just new at this sort of thing so don't laugh too much when I ask this question but would that even work? I mean would some sort of programming need to be done to make the gameboy pcb recognize and be able to use the buttons from this new replacement bored you mentioned is available on amazon?
thats pretty amazing, I've recently gone into painting controllers and consoles and the first console I did was an SP (painted it in a mario mushroom design with face and all) but needed two because I messed up a bit (it was my first time afterall) now i recently got a broken DM gameboy and I still have the pcb of the sp, so I've decided to do this. Though I would like to ask how you knew where to connect all the cables, do you need to be able to read pcb and if yes, could you tell me where I could learn it?
andrew mcneil just curious it's not really related to what you made in the video but have you ever made a Raspberry pi installed in the original Gameboy DMG case with retro pi installed?
i collect video games and have all the parts laying around the only thing i need is to buy the mini yellow momentary push switch which you place in the back can you please direct me as to where i can purchase them ??
YUNVMY COOLNAME go to any electronics supply store or Amazon or Ebay there is nothing special about them you can find them in any place like that easily. anyways I see that your comment is pretty old but I don't see any response so maybe you never did this so here's an answer to your question :-)
Could you make a more in depth video or a step by step guide? (sorry, I'm nervous about putting my sp into my Gameboy and I've never really done anything like this)
Hi, I’m curious, how do you play GBA games on this. I say this because, you haven’t done anything with the cartridge switch. It looks like you’ve just put a bit of tape onto this switch to keep it in GB/C Mode?? The switch is located to the side of the cartridge slot, look at this switch and you will see a little tab sticking out. A GBA cartridge is designed to bypass this tab, whereas a GB/C cartridge catches it.
I'd happily pay for something like this too. Just something that plays all the games on what seems to be a proper console. I have all the emulators with an external controller on my phone already
You played Tetris on a Game Boy in 1989? ;-) Did you import one or something haha cos it didn't come out until September 1990 in the UK and you sound British so I'm assuming you're in the UK
RWL2012 lol so I'm guessing that you think everyone who is from one place couldn't possibly live in a different place I mean maybe they moved when he was younger? lol anyways don't take offense to this comment or anything I am not saying yo offend you at all like your comment to the original person in the video I'm just messing with you a little lol ;-)
Sebastian Snyder I realized this is clever BUT, the gba cartridges and the gb/gbc cartidges are shaped differently. There is a switch that turns the SP into GB/GBC mode inside the cartdrige by the slot so you'd have to adjust for that somehow.
Yancade hand built games machines just give it a try yourself it's not a difficult mod I'm new to this sort of thing and it all looks simple and not even as difficult as other things I've made. Give it a try you will like the end result more if you make it yourself :-)
Check out the video at 12:44.there are 2 wires soldered on the L and R tack switchers on the sp. Also later in the video I say how I had to remove one of the tack switchers as it got in the way of the new power switch. Also check out the pictures in the link. Hope this helps

1-instead of having the shoulder buttons be little numbs I plan on using Snes controller shoulder buttons,
2-including the functionality of the headphone jack into the SP
3-loved the idea with the CD case being a new screen BUT im going to add a smartphone screen protector for added safety from scuffs
4-going to take a DSi battery pack for longer life span and smaller foot print
5-adding a toggle switch for a second Hz crystal for "turbo mode"
6-incorporating both GB and GBA linkports
and two that i actually would like a little input on would be:
7-sliding cartage port, like theres a little nub on the outside where it can be slid manually to accomodate GBA carts without cutting away at the shell
8-sleep mode, some sort of master switch that would turn off the screen, speaker and possibly disable the buttons(doubtful), very much like how the PsP's screen sleep mode and toggle for disabled buttons
I know your probably not reading this cause how old the video is but despite the wiring and board mounting job you did you did something that was virtually unheard of at time and something that’s still impressive
I've been waiting 3 years for an explanation like this... Thank you so much!

Awesome job man. You did this for your kid's it's friggin amazing work.

I would love to see a picture of that. I am planning on doing this build soon.
Well, yeah. He just wanted tactile buttons. I sometimes prefer them.
You're a madman. I hope that I can be as skilled in the future.
Thank you,I was searching for this fo a long time, its time to make one by myself!
you sir are a god in my eyes. your method is beautiful and it worked for me! big thanks!
Love your project, thanks for sharing ❤️
Only thing I'd differently is to opt out of the tac switches to keep the original feel.
Good little project, well done.
Now to fit an xbox one into a micro sd card!
Give it another 20 years and you probably will!
andrew mcneil what about a gba micro inside of a gameboy color? id love to see that and possibly own one.. tho it would be expensive
DjStiv3 would be easier than this mod I reckon, If I get a micro and a broken color I'll give it a go =)
Your Travel Planners
yea do so, i mean i guess you could use an SP as well, but id like to see a full on SP inside a gameboy color shell
I already did ;)
LIKE A BOSS!!! Congrats for the video, simply amazing and awesome!.
I love it, man. I'm gonna give this a shot

I'm going to have to agree with John. This is awesome though. You definitely earned subscriber.

andrew
Would be really good to make and design a gameboy laptop so it would be all the gameboys in 1
+SLiiP2HD you do know the GBA works as all Gameboys?
Gnm Software 2012 | Gnmpolicemata or you can just make a Raspberry pi portable game system with retro pi installed on it and you get all the gameboy games as well as other systems :-)
Can you give a step by step? In photos or a vid would be great.
Great video! God bless you and yours!
This looks like that Super Virtual Boy coming out at the end of the year
Do you offer this as a service I would gladly pay you for your time
Have you thought about putting a GBA system into a Gameboy Pocket shell?
I've seen people do it but I can't find any legit tutorials it should be similar to the GBA in a GBC shell.
your welcome.
hell yeah thats awesome man
Good job mate! How did u connect the volume wheel? Do u have instructions for me please?
This is a great project and I am looking forward to have my own sp-in-old-GB-case.
The only problem is that I don't know that much about electronics.

Great job showing the connections that have to be made between the two on/off swiches.
really liked your job
Can you recommend a good Soldering Kit? and which tool did you use to make the alterations to the casing?
Hey Andrew. I wanted to know how you went about plugging in the audio jack to the Gameboy SP motherboard?
You can make a list of the components necessary to build it? My English is not very good , I lost a bit in the video.
Oh, okay. And my last question is what type of wire did you use and? I bought some at a local store but it was too thick and it was the smallest wire they had. They said they could special order anything for a cheaper than retail price but they just need the brand.
This is a feat mod! Thanks for sharing!!
what is the size of the wires (green and orange) that you soldering on to the mother board?
on amazon there is a pcb for the gb buttons that is used in custom builds like yours. and you get to keep the original button pads =)
Aaron Walker I'm just new at this sort of thing so don't laugh too much when I ask this question but would that even work? I mean would some sort of programming need to be done to make the gameboy pcb recognize and be able to use the buttons from this new replacement bored you mentioned is available on amazon?
Nice tutorial but I've got a question. To which solder points on the SP board did you attach your tactile switches ?
Straight on by the look of it
What gauge of wire did you use for rewiring the cartridge slot?
thats pretty amazing, I've recently gone into painting controllers and consoles and the first console I did was an SP (painted it in a mario mushroom design with face and all) but needed two because I messed up a bit (it was my first time afterall) now i recently got a broken DM gameboy and I still have the pcb of the sp, so I've decided to do this.
Though I would like to ask how you knew where to connect all the cables, do you need to be able to read pcb and if yes, could you tell me where I could learn it?
Hi no you just need to have some experience with soldering. All you are doing is extending the controls using wire.
How much would it cost for you for you to make this
i im not mistaken did you not add l an r buttons? is that what those two yellow knobs were?
Are the L and R buttons the yellow buttons on the side? If so, how are those wired?
What is the volume pin outs of you don't mind me asking
I found it. Thank you!
Question: What points do I solder if I am not using tactical switches?
What size are the wires you used for the game PCB? Mine are way too big
gameboy colour is smaller so probably not as less room but i have not tried it.
andrew mcneil just curious it's not really related to what you made in the video but have you ever made a Raspberry pi installed in the original Gameboy DMG case with retro pi installed?
Awesome!
How did you cut the surcet board
Can you PLEASE do another one where you dont use tactile switches, and you do it step by step????
yeah i need that to lol
i collect video games and have all the parts laying around the only thing i need is to buy the mini yellow momentary push switch which you place in the back can you please direct me as to where i can purchase them ??
YUNVMY COOLNAME go to any electronics supply store or Amazon or Ebay there is nothing special about them you can find them in any place like that easily. anyways I see that your comment is pretty old but I don't see any response so maybe you never did this so here's an answer to your question :-)
Could you make a more in depth video or a step by step guide? (sorry, I'm nervous about putting my sp into my Gameboy and I've never really done anything like this)
John Thomas none of this stuff is expensive at all just buy a second one to use for this mod you can buy them on ebay for next to nothing.
what about left and right buttons?
Can Veroboard not be used for this?
So my sp will not read gbc carts anymore when I was relocating the cartridge slot. But it reads gba games just fine! Any suggestions?
Hi, I’m curious, how do you play GBA games on this.
I say this because, you haven’t done anything with the cartridge switch.

could you make one for me i would pay of course and could you make a tutorial to put a sp in a pocket
why doesnt anyone just literally put the case of the gameboy on the outside of an sp instead of resoldering everything
This man's a fucking genius.
id kill for a gba sp with an og gb color scheme.
You should've done just the backlight modification so then you have the original GameBoy but a better screen
And how would I play advance games on it!
+andrew mcneil or Color for that matter haha
andrew mcneil lol I know right some people just are not getting the point of doing something like this. Anyways great job awesome video :-)
Having a hard time finding it online
What gauge wire
Where can i get this? Im not very handy on the delicate projects like this without help
Sean Flattery Sorry Sean I don't know of anyone who makes them to sell.
andrew mcneil You wouldnt make one to sell? Big $$$!!! Ill pay 250.
I'd happily pay for something like this too. Just something that plays all the games on what seems to be a proper console. I have all the emulators with an external controller on my phone already
+SCK thanks for being a troll. i was looking to see if there was anyone good with electronics out there
+Bradolf Shitler this is actually on my list of projects. are you still wanting one?
You played Tetris on a Game Boy in 1989? ;-) Did you import one or something haha cos it didn't come out until September 1990 in the UK and you sound British so I'm assuming you're in the UK

@@RavenTheLabrador fair point though!
Instead of modding the case to accept a GBA game. Get a flash cart of a GBA game, fit it into an original cart, and play off an SD card.
Sebastian Snyder I realized this is clever BUT, the gba cartridges and the gb/gbc cartidges are shaped differently. There is a switch that turns the SP into GB/GBC mode inside the cartdrige by the slot so you'd have to adjust for that somehow.
Heroicbanter GBC they have different notches :0

Hi I'm an interested buyer but I'm not really a DIY person. How much could I pay you to mod a gameboy for me and ship it? I'm
how much to make me one if i supplied you the consoles?
Yancade hand built games machines just give it a try yourself it's not a difficult mod I'm new to this sort of thing and it all looks simple and not even as difficult as other things I've made. Give it a try you will like the end result more if you make it yourself :-)
Cool i want 1
Needs more wires.
I have been wanting to put a ps3 in a ps2.probley easyer to do it ps4 in ps2 case
why the hell did you used tac switches their the freckin worst
YOU HAVE A GAMEBOY, HOW??????????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
