    Absolutely LOVE this shell, just wish compatibility with accessories could have been maintained. I'm also a bit disappointed that the shoulder buttons were not replaced-- they're probably my least favorite part of the standard SP. Some larger, metal shoulder buttons would be really nice!

      Probably not because they go on the bandwagon "making it metal = premium".
      BTW metal housings are not more expensive as plastic in production, it's just markup because companies know that metal is associated with higher Quality (which it isn't) so they charge you more.

    Great video man, definitely was excited to check this one out.
    I got my hands on this myself and I gotta say I have a few issues with it myself. Most you already addressed, but a big one for me were the L/R buttons, the loss of the springs makes the buttons feel stiff and not having that slight kickback from them just doesn't feel right. They still work just fine, but in terms of comfortability, I'd say it just doesn't feel too good pushing those buttons, especially when they're so close to the upper back of the shell now. It's almost a deal breaker for me if I'm going to be perfectly honest.
    The light pipe not fitting properly was also pretty disappointing. But, seeing what you did gave me an idea of what I can do instead.
    The other issue I had, it's not too bad, but I have to point it out. I ordered the 3D printed parts to fit over the optional USB-C and headphone jack openings and temporarily installed them, but I ran into an issue where the parts just don't stay in place. Maybe I'm missing something? But it looked as though the GBA SP motherboard is supposed to hold them in place, but I found that nothing worked to keep those parts there, and I really didn't want to use hot glue.
    Overall, I think this shell is amazing aside from those issues I ran into. The big one for me is mostly the L/R feel.

    The issue with the GameCube adapter identified at 15:18 in the video is a physical issue caused by those clips. You can remove the clips from the adapter without breaking them and that would solve the issue. You would of course have to be a bit more careful in how you handle the GBA. This should also apply to the Infrared and Wireless Adapters, which have similar clips. The e-reader may be tricky due to the way its link port extender is placed, (see its wiki for details)

    Unhinged V2 tomorrow green with black buttons. Plus i designed a file to engrave rayquaza on the battery cover. Got the V2 Unhinged and its sweet! 1 thing about the tutorial is the usb c wires need to be either really thin or put the black wire towards the bottom most part of the ground shielding and rout them hard turned right and down into the hole. Putting them over the chip like you have or soldering the ground to the middle of the side caused the shell not able to close. 1 thing i wish was in the same video was that headphone jack because idk where im going to route those wires even after seeing your jack and blu tooth video

    The hinges are a stress point, sure, but that the new narrow space behind the screen doesn't look much better. If you sit wrong with that in your pocket, I can't imagine that won't bend in a bad way.

    2 questions: do you have a video showing how to wire up the LED light pipe?
    Does the speaker need to be wired to anything?
    Great video! Absolutely loved it

    Reminds me of the gameboy pocket, which was my favourite design, however the og advance was the most comfortable.

  • @THATCANADIANDUDE682

    I feel like they could have made the body a bit thicker to have the OG gameboy astetic. Then again you need space for the shoulder buttons.
    Maybe for a V2 they could make it thicker witb an indent for comfortable shoulder buttons?

  • @Cherokie89
    @Cherokie89 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I know the metal is supposd to feel premium but in a handheld game system it somehow feels... cheaper? I don't really know why. I guess my brain is just saying "Hey, this isn't a real game boy" the whole time I'm holding it or something. It's really cool and I'm glad someone is making it but my brain wants plastic lol. Now, one thing I would be super interested in is a more modern, squared-off shell for the game boy micro. Maybe they'll do something for it in the future. The swoop shape hasn't aged well.

    Best mod is GBA SP screen + GBA case/button layout really. Shoulder buttons need the old GBA case for easy access.

    Wonderful video! this my first time on your channel, and it's safe to say I have a new favorite person to watch!
    This thing is really elegant, and I thought before about how a game boy advance SP win fully open is similar to an original game boy in shape and layout... To see it in this package is beautiful!
    I'm not very good at soldering yet... But I did just find my AGS 001 from a long time ago... This would be sick!

    the biggest con for me (not mentioned in the video) is that the GBA -> Gamecube cable wont fit anymore since it latches into 2 hole's that arnt cnc'ed into this case. They could ahve made the case even a little bit thicker, moved the gba connectors a bit and added a slot where you can put the games into, like you would on a Gameboy Pocket.

    I have brass buttons on my boxypixle build for GBA I recommend putting brass lacquer on them to stop them from tarnishing. They get quite dirty looking quicker than I would like.

    thinking I might just do this, wondering how far we can take this, blue-tooth audio, stereo sound (as memory serves the audio jack supports it) mod the link cable, wireless transfer pack, and maybe add in cartage-free rubble-pack... maybe a switch to change the lighting levels on the fly (if it doesn't already have one) mod the planet

    Nice mod, through & through ... Although, i would have gone with Jtagging the battery - socket & connector - in case U would need to take it apart again to perform whatever future mods or repairs more easy than desoldering the terminals everytime .. Otherwise, great work & looks a high quality mod .. Cheers

    looks great, but i wonder how the adhesive keeping the usb-c board in place is going to hold up (and i guess the headphone jack would be attached this way too). maybe it's fitted snugly enough that it won't be an issue?

    • @MachoNachoProductions
      @MachoNachoProductions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The tape helps but it also has walls around it to keep it secure also. Agree it would be nice to have it secured by screws. Cheers!
