People complained that the Bears didn’t do a thorough job when hiring coaches in the past. Now that they’ve decided to leave no stone unturned, the same folks are complaining that they’re interviewing too many or don’t know what they’re doing. I agree with you…pick the brains on as many NFL experts as you can. Also, they might find their diamond (“Tomlin”) in the rough and find their guy. As Poles said, going into this process with an open mind lets them make a decision that makes sense for the Bears and allows them to not fixate on one or two guys. I’m good with this process and love how you laid it out.
Who complained it wasn't thorough enough last time? Not sure about Eberflus, but there were at least 13 candidates for GM when they hired Poles. This is how the Bears always do it - throw a wide net. And they always miss. It's a crap organization. This choice is a no-brainer. it was a no-brainer that Harbaugh was the top choice last year, and Ben Johnson is the clear cut top choice this year. They're inviting guys nobody wants and wasting time. They will intellectualize themselves right out of the right pick yet again, because as always, the Bears front office and ownership think they're smarter than everyone else. All while continuing to put a garbage product on the field.
Thanks for the common sense and excellent perspective on the coach interview parade. You are 100%. Also 100% on Polien & Flus. He wasn’t Poles’s choice
I completely agree with you swifty, Imo this a great way 2 go about it. Interviewing many candidates. Great work swifty, I always look forward to ur videos
The bears aren’t the only team looking for a coach, by the time we are able to interview all these candidates some will get hired by the other 5 teams looking for a coach
They will do what they do and I find following the Bears for 63 years is interesting, Very Interesting. I dont get upset about things I cant control. Bwaaaah.
And Bill Polian had no accountability because he was an outside consultant and not employed by the bears facing potential firing if he screwed up. Was never fond of that idea
I agree with the hiring process I saw a couple videos today on it crazy . I wouldn’t have any problem with interviewing as many as it takes to find out about them or otherwise. Come people why be so obsessive . When to little it’s talked about negatively and when it’s to many , no one is happy, right? Thanks Plank for mentioning and Swifty thanks for covering it . BearDown
Matt Campbell was an awesome coach for the Toledo Rockets when he was here . He was 35 and 15 and got us to be nationally rank at 19. He is like a qb guru but the odd thing that scrares me is that Flus played at university of toledo so is that where the name came from or did it come from Nick saban who also use to coach at the university of toledo but anyway. Matt Campbell is an awesome coach and I think he would be a good fit but I think the bears need someone that worked in the NFL already
Also, I’m pretty sure Flus and Poles have the same agent too, so them both and Polian all had ties in some way, seemed like a buddy buddy hiring process
I've read that the Chargers interviewed 15 candidates before hiring Harbaugh. As long as they get it right (Very Skeptical) the number of interviews don't matter.
I believe these interviews are not only for head coach. You best believe some of these head coach candidates are gonna be on staff in other roles. It happens all the time..
This is totally ridiculous. Doing a thorough search doesn’t mean you just send a bunch invitations out to whoever. All that is required is to identify 8 to 10 good prospects, research their history, and prepare questions to see what their vision for this team would be. Articulate their plans. Watch, more than likely the 🐻s will hire someone that nobody is even talking about nor even knows. Hell I wouldn’t be surprised if they hire somebody that they didn’t even interview because they wasted all their time interviewing people that had no business being interviewed.
Someone needs to explain to me why the bears have 5 or 6 guys involved with the hiring of our new coach. Shouldn’t this be left up to Warren and poles our top two football guys? Hard for me believe with so many interviewers involved in this search that they will all agree on one candidate
Just think about how many mock drafts the Bears ran and how many scenarios they considered before each draft. This exhaustive search will give them a chance to reinvent their coaching itself from all directions. Maybe they will see their blind spots or at least take off their blinders.
Agreed. It's not impressive interviewing 15 candidates. Some are offensive, some defensive, some old, some young, some with HC experience, some without. No it doesn't "hurt," unless it completely turns off your top candidate (*cough cough Ben Johnson). Just shows a total lack of direction and focus. Why do we need to ask everyone in the world how'd they develop Caleb?? Why even listen to their opinion? Like listening to the plan Matt Eberflus had really helped in Caleb's development. The only opinion that matters is from a smart head coach.
Idk; Poles is a young GM. It only helps him casting a wide net and conducting many interviews. The more interviews he does, the better feel he will get for what he wants in a HC candidate. He will get a better feel for how to conduct an interview, what questions to ask, and how to spot a shoe salesman. It's just savvy on his part.
@cbrindle91 just like he did with the #1 pick by interviewing the top QB candidates...oh wait, that's right he didn't. He interviewed ONE candidate because he had his mind already made up. Poles is awful. Did you listen to his recent interview? A reporter asked him about the turbulent season and stresses that Caleb went through this year. Poles had the audacity to ask the reported to clarify what he meant by turbulent season. Really? Like this season was so smooth and well run. Total lack of awareness and lack of taking accountability for putting together this mess of a team.
@ if you want to catch a big ass fish you need to use a big ass net, right? And when you toss that net out, a lot of little fish are going to slip through it. Some of these interviews are those little-medium size fish.
Listening to poles talk about “learning from my mistakes”, makes me feel like Poles is making sure nobody can say “poles didn’t even bring him in for an interview”, just like we’ve been hearing when it’s comes to Jim Harbaugh and O’Connell.
In the startup process, you are required to interview a minimum of 25 company's to validate their need and your solutions benefits. 15 interviews is the right strategy to get the right feedback and insight on your football's team process and what is the right solution. They are doing it right. Also, people who are reporting have never hired people. They all sound good with wonderful resume, but you only find out if they can do the job when they start to perform. This is standard business reality. A football hire as a HC is no different.
The net is too wide imo. Are they going to fall in love with one of these guys because of what they say in an interview? It is like a GM falling in love with a guy because of the combine. Just look at the damn tape or go off what they have actually done, not what they say they will do. I hate being pessimistic but I have been a Bear fan for so long and I just feel like they are gonna "Bear" this thing up. How many guys would you really want to be the next Bear head coach? It aint 15 or 20 or how ever many guys (or girls) they are bringing in. Last thing, why does George or someone from HR need to be a part of it??? I don't want George or someone else who knows nothing about football being a voice in the room. Sorry for rambling. 🐻⬇️✌️✝️
I'm going to be honest. There's like eight or nine guys on this list that I hope the Bears do not hire. But I'll support the new coach. But I do not want to go down the Uberflus trail again. Meaning hiring some of these smaller name people that I have never heard of coaches. Bears need to get this right this time! And they have a better chance of getting it right with some of the bigger names.
Hey, Swifty! When I do hiring, I usually take in as many candidates as possible and trim the list down to 2 or 3 viable prospects. In accordance with what you said, I have found actual GEMS by casting a wider net than required. This is so typical in hiring throughout many industries that I am actually confused on what all this noise is about. I also read that Poles was only given two (2) days, after being hired, to pick from three (3) Polian-selected choices for HC, of which Eberflus was one. So, not being part of the interview process, Poles chose the "best available". Thankfully, that scenario isn't happening this time. Poles will make a good choice because his own career with Da Bears is dependent of this HC hire. Thanks for this video 🐻🐻🐻🐻⬇⬇⬇⬇
Exactly! I don't understand the takes I'm seeing/hearing online lately. Have these media people never been on job hunts/interviews before? If they start off with only 2 or 3 candidates then the candidates can bid against each other and drive up their price. By casting a wider net the Bears give themselves more room to negotiate. They can also get opinions and perspectives on their team that they've never even considered. No way could Poles have been deeply involved in hiring Flus. He was just hired and then 2 days later they have a coach. Hopefully he gets to run things with as little interference from above as possible.
@@xar3244 ummm that's not how hiring works. The 2-3 candidates don't bid against each other driving up the price. The job has an expected salary range. Good candidates will receive a salary at the upper end while lesser candidate will receive the lower end. The candidate has no idea how many people the company is interviewing. Stop giving Poles praise...he's done an awful job as the GM and has shown no personal accountability.
@@jimbody Once you are offered a job, that is the time to ask for the moon. Before accepting the position you are at your most valuable. If they say no, you've lost nothing. If you walk away the company it will cost a company more money to start the process over again. You should always consider yourself a sought after free agent,
@@xar3244 so what does that have to do with 2-3 candidates "bidding against each other" to drive up the price? They tell you what they intend to pay you for the position, then you decide if you want the job. Companies don't just fawn over a candidate and say, "the job is yours, just name your price!" LOL. You get a bump in pay when you already work for the company, then find a better job opportunity that pays more. You then go to your current employer and say, "hey I just accepted a job offer from your competitor that pays much more." Then if your current employer values your services, they will match or exceed their competitors offer. That's how leverage works.
More is not necessarily better though I'm more concerned about the people doing the interviews than the people being interviewed. Way too many interviews and way too many people on the Zoom calls. When has a committee ever looked at over a dozen alternatives and made the right decision? The committee loudmouth will get his/her way. They're often wrong. I'd much rather see a smaller group of candidates and only a few people on the selection committee.
Sound advice, and not listening to Pete Carroll would be stupid. If ya think crazy then wonder why Brady may lure Belichick to Raiders. I like Carroll's attitude and energy. Get it right and feel good about it and then hold to the plan.

I got 2 names for you. Do some homework. Kellen, Moore. Tell me who's Moore impressive. Kellen Moore was 50-2 in college. What was Caleb or Ben Johnson. Then look at NFL playing experience then I'll take Moore over Johnson and Williams come in 3rd because he's a rookie. Then you go years as an NFL offensive play caller. Moore then Johnson and Caleb doesn't call NFL offensive plays so he's 3rd.
I prefer hiring a head coach with previous head coaching experience especially after hiring Matt Nagy & Matt Eberflus both clearly weren't ready to be a head coach in the NFL That being said an opportunity to hire Ben Johnson or Aaron Glenn away from the Lions is very enticing
