Yashica SCOPE 1.5x Anamorphic Lens - 8mm look

  • Another great, yet small 8mm lens.
    This is the Yashica Scope Anamorphic lens 8mm 1.5x ratio. Originally used on the Yashica 8T2 for filming and projecting 8mm anamorphically, this lens performs nicely on modern crop sensors DSLRs.
    Here it is mounted on the Helios 44-2 58mm f2.0 on a Canon 550d.
    Lens gets quite sharp for apertures above f=4-5.6 and has a useable horizontal squeeze factor of 1.5x (same as the Iscorama).
    Another interesting feature of this lens, is that since the focusing ring is in the front and the lens barrel is slim, it can be mounted on a clamp so that the rear element protrudes and gets closer to the front element of the taking lens. By doing so, I have been able to focus very close (around 50mm, even though the minimum distance on the focusing ring of the Yashica is about 1m), without using any diopters. This is really great and not common with anamorphic lenses.
    Again, random subjects for this test, but gives an idea of what this lens can do.
    Filmed with the Technicolor Cinestyle picture profile, LUT curve applied in Final Cut Pro, and did slight color fine tuning with 3-way color corrector, then graded with Magic Bullet Looks and applied grain from super 8 film and added flicker.

    awesome flares man. really great stuff.

    @randytate Thanks! I like the unique look of the Helios and it flares a lot, that is why this is usually my taking lens with anamorphics. Apart from the swirly bokeh, image quality is very similar with a more neutral lens.

    The footage has an amazing look. But a Helios lens alone has a sort of quirky look. It would be cool to see test shots with a more neutral taking lens, like a Nikon or Canon 50mm f/1.8. But you've certainly achieved a really cool vintage film look here.

    I really dig the flares and grading you got. Great test, i'm ordering the vistascope 1.5X anamorphic, I believe it's similar to this. But can you tell me the basis of the grading technique you did to achieve this 8MM look, i have been trying to achieve it for a bit.

    Should I get this lens for my A7S? Also, what focal lengths can I use with this without getting any vignetting?

      Hello.
      Depends on what you are looking for.
      Generally speaking there are better anamorphic lenses out there. In my opinion the highlight of this one is the epic flare (that you can see in the video). Sharpness wise, it was not stellar, especially at wider apertures.
      I have used this lens with 58mm on crop frame. Maybe 50mm will also work if the lens has a recessed front element and you can put the rear part of the anamorphic close to the front part of the spherical lens (this is because the lens is small, and by doing so you avoid vignetting).
      The 2x projection lenses like Kowa, Moller, Singer, Sankor, Proskar etc. are sharper. But, that said, it is one of the most inexpensive options to get into 1.5x cinemascope, whereas 2x is a bit too wide for general use.
      Hope this helps

    Hey, I have a couple of questions, does the front element rotate on the lens and what are the front and rear thread diameter?

    • @kpetsas
      @kpetsas  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, I no longer have this lens so I cannot help with diameter measurings.
      From what I remember the front element does rotate

    Hello master Kostas!
    Sold my Old Delft Vista Scope 16mm and just got one of those.
    I still need to buy some rings to adapt it but i'd really appreciate some tips about how to nail focusing with the Yashica Scope and how to proper fit nd filters in front of it.
    Thank you very much!

      Dual focusing is a little tricky, you first need to focus your taking lens, then your anamorphot, then fine tune with both till sharp focus is achieved.
      For diopters and other filters you need to get a front filter clamp from redstan.com that suits your lens.
      If you need to purchase diopters I have some +0.5 spare ones.
      Good luck.

      Why did you sell the Vista Scope, mate?

    • @kpetsas
      @kpetsas  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because I have many lenses and not much time :)
      I have settled on the Iscorama for when I need to shoot anamorphic.

    Hi, I bought Sankyoscope Anamorphic lens adapter 1.5x.
    1. Is there any custom made clamp to this adapter?
    2. Have you used this anamorphic adapter? if yes,
    3. What is your feedback on this adapter?
    4. Whether this adapter goes well with GH4?
    Pl advise
    regards
    Vidya

      Hello Vidya
      There are no custom clamps, but smaller clamps by Redstan.com will do th job.
      For the Sankyoscope check my other video here: th-cam.com/video/ncFZN-_JzzA/w-d-xo.html
      In a few words, the Sankyoscope is decent when used with a diopter to focus closer, but, as all focus through anamorphics, it can never get as good as a lens with a proper focusing ring.
      It will work with the GH4, as with all crop cameras, provided that you use a taking lens that does not vignette.
      Happy shooting!

    Hey I just bought magic bullet looks, do you know the name of the preset and can I get the link to the stock 8MM Grain you used. Thanks dude

  • @kpetsas
    @kpetsas  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The grading has been performed using magic bullet looks, starting off from a preset that looks like an old photograph or something like that.
    On top of this, a loop of actual 8mm grain footage has been overlaid.
    Cheers.

    Are you able to do rack focus with just moving the anamorphic ring?

    • @kpetsas
      @kpetsas  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, this is a dual focus lens, you need to focus both the anamorphic and the taking lens to adjust focus

    ΓΕΙΑ σου φίλε πολύ ωραία δουλειά! Ψάχνομαι πολύ για αναμορφικους φακούς και είμαι λίγο μπερδεμένος. Έχεις κατά νου μηπος θα μπορούσα να βρω στην Ελλάδα?

    • @kpetsas
      @kpetsas  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Καλημέρα. Δεν γνωρίζω αν μπορείς να βρεις κάτι στην Ελλάδα, καθώς οι αναμορφικοί adapters είναι κυρίως παλαιοί μεταχειρισμένοι φακοί.
      Υπάρχει όμως δραστήρια αγορά στο εξωτερικό. Εάν καταλήξεις στο τι ακριβώς θέλεις μπορείς κυρίως μέσω eBay να κινηθείς για την αγορά σου.

    Do you know how this lens works with a full frame sensor or a super 35?

    • @kpetsas
      @kpetsas  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Super 35 is definitely ok, with a 50mm-60mm taking lens. It would vignette heavily on a full frame sensor though
