definitely something I should get, I've been shooting fire staff spinning in a cave. Pretty epic on the 90D with 17-55 f/2.8, but adding the lens flare from fire would rival JJ's 2009 Trek.
While I definitely try to get the look of my shot as close to what I’m looking for in camera, I decided that if I’m going for a lens flare, there are tons of plug-ins that emulate it with dozens of ways to adjust the look. The only thing I can’t fake in post production is out of focus points of light being oval. Therefore I chose the Cinemorph WITHOUT The lens flare thread in the center. I will get the oval bokeh in Camera and then can create and fine-tune my own lens flares. The benefit for me is I now have control over how intense I want the lens flare to be. Maybe I framed a shot exactly the way I want with a practical light exactly where I want it to be for the composition of the image. With the lens flare string there may be more flare than I’d like, perhaps covering actors face. I’m out of luck if I want to keep camera angle and props as-is. Doing it MY way however, there won’t be any lens flare on the raw footage and I can make my own; maybe the flare needs to be not as wide, or not as long or not as bright - all adjustable in post. And I can alter the color of the flare in anyway I want. The Cinemorph can be bought in several colors but then you’re stuck with that. Granted the fake way of doing lens flares doesn’t look PERFECTLY authentic but it’s damn close and more importantly I can adjust it however I want.
I am interested in this filter, but have a question, if anyone can answer, please: - when taking photos or making videos, with this filter on the lens, will I have to de-squeeze the image in post or crop the image, like towards the end of the video?
I assume that there will be some big vignetting left and right, in the image, as I have seen in the video, or? Thanks so much!
Hello! This filter only affects bokeh (and adds vignetting if you're using a wider lens), so there's no de-squeezing requirements (unlike other anamorphic lenses). Vignetting depends on the kind of lens/camera you're using. In general, you can avoid vignetting using lower f-stop values and longer focal lengths. Hope that helps!
why did u use s35mm mode? how about full frame 35mm mode? does it work if i want full frame mode to be wide angle and s35mm mode to be zoom angle....which means 1 lens 2 angle....?
When I said "super35", I was really talking about aps-c crop, as I currently only own a crop sensor camera and the two sizes are very similar. If you use your camera in s35 mode, you'll get similar results to what I've shown here. If you use it in regular full-frame mode, you might get vignetting at 35mm focal lengths and wider.
Super appreciate the introduction to cinemorph. It's clear you are very knowledgeable and experienced. So it doesn't work on zooms correct? Primes above 50mm for best results?
Hey Jon. Thanks! I haven't tried it on a ton of zooms, but in my experience I haven't found a single zoom it works well on. So yeah my recommendation is primes above 50mm, and you'll want to keep their apertures relatively open.
The one you'd be buying is a smaller filter, but in general pretty much the same. I got the blue colour rather than the neutral colour, so flares on the one you mentioned will be the colour of their light source rather than blue.
Great. Just ordered one of these. Do you find it tricky to use one of these with a variable ND filter? Two filters that both rotate. Any tips? Many thanks.
Just to answer my own question, Tito Ferradans reckons he puts the anamorfake filter on first and tapes it so that it doesn't rotate. Then the ND goes on top. Hope that's helpful to someone 😁
@@ninefourvisuals Indeed it does. Quite deep ones too. I do anamorphic & fake on my Sony FX30 and/or A6700 depending on conditions. So, decent APS-C cameras. But I am video only, so I have only one auto-focus lens for run and gun, filming acrobats, etc. I don't try to anamorfake that. But in general I found my copy of this filter produces disappointing results. I would probably persevere with it if it were all I had, but I now have a couple of real anamorphic lenses (Laowa Nanomorph) which I supplement with streak filters if I want a really bold flare.
@@ninefourvisuals I found it difficult to get bold enough flare and oval bokeh to make it worth the bother. But that is a very personal experience. I just found I got on better with lenses with internal modifications, or just using a streak filter. Whereabouts are you based? I could send you mine if you like. I am not using it.
yo i love this review, it's concise ! but i'm so new at filters & whatnot so i'm just wondering if i have a 49mm filter thread (on Sony FE 50mm F1.8) will the 77mm CineMorph filter kit suffice or will i need to buy a step up ring or will it just not work with a 49mm filter diameter altogether? thank you!!
nichosal hey there! Yep if you get a step-up ring, I imagine it should suffice! I’ve used this filter on a lens with a 52mm filter diameter and it’s worked great!
Definitely on my to-do list. Unfortunately I don't have access to all of the lenses I had when I filmed this video, so I won't have as many to test on, but I'll definitely get around to it eventually. I can however tell you right off the bat that I don't think it would be a practical combo. Cinemorph works best at tighter focal lengths with wider apertures, whereas the LA7200 works best at wider focal lengths and smaller apertures, so I imaging the useable overlap would be minimal. Regardless, I'm sure it would make a fun test.
Hey Dilan, I actually have that lens and I can say that it won't work well with this filter. When you go that wide you run into a ton of vignetting and the streak flares become really short and only occupy the very middle of the field of view. My guess is you could mayyyyybe get away with it on a micro-four-thirds sensor like on the GH5, but it's definitely a no-go for aps-c sensors and full-frame.
@@JonyRoy I guess this is the reason becaouse I don´t see wide anamorphic lenses. Thanks a lot for telling me I did´t know it at all. Actually mi camera is a MFT, the BMPCC 4K, but acording with you said I don´t know if try it. By the way, great review !!
@@dilan3483 Thanks. Yeah, in your case I'm really not sure how well it would work. I've typically used the panasonic LA7200 anamorphic adapter for wider focal lengths instead of my cinemorph. I've found they both complement eachother really nicely.
I just stupidly bought this for my 12-35mm f2.8 lens and it looked horrible lol, so i bought a Kamlan 50mm prime lens f1.1. Will this new lens i just got work?
That's too bad! Zoom lenses (especially wide ones) don't tend to play well with the cinemorph. I'm guessing the Kamlan 50mm f1.1 should work fine with it though!
What's the maximum aperture on that Canon lens? I know on my Rokinon 85mm T1.5 (basically f/1.4), the cinemorph works really well, so my guess is it will work pretty well on your Canon.
Ashvin Bhadjoe I used the “blue” one for everything. Though a very long time ago I had the streak-only filter with the “natural” one, which was used in the shot at 1:35
Love your video man. Really informative. I'm looking for some information about still photo with this lens. Do you have any sample? Is it good for that?
Nopphalux Kosakorn sorry for the late reply! I have not used it for still photography. In theory, it works just fine for the lenses that it would work for in video, but isn’t a look that’s commonly used in photography. It’s good if you want to be artsy though!
would be fine with my gh5/speedbooster xl/walimex 50mm ? and what kind of color do u recommend? what does the neutral one? does it just flare the light source?
Hey! That's a bitt of a tricky one since with that speedbooster you're effectively widening you frame to somewhere between aps-c and full-frame. I think it should work with that 50mm, but you'll want to keep your aperture pretty open when shooting with it, otherwise you'll run into vignetting. I recommend either the neutral one which will just flare in the colour of the light source, or the blue one for a more classic anamorphic look. I use the blue one on mine and like it a bit more.
It's up to you depending on how much you like horizontal lens flare. The wire only shows up in bokeh sometimes in my experience. I feel that the wire doesn't take away from the look enough to make the lens flare not worth it for me.
Stop-Motion Studio HD thanks man! If you are shooting with a crop sensor, the cinemorph should definitely work with the 50mm f/1.8 when wide open no problem. You might get a little bit of vignetting on a 44 f/2. That said, they’ve recently changed the filter to work a tiny bit better at wider focal lengths so I imagine you should be fine unless you’re shooting full-frame.
DeMarco Hernández either version should work fine with you Samyang 85, but the cinemorph filters in general won’t work well with your 35mm (you’ll get a lot of vignetting).
Would not recommend for the 24mm if you're on APS-C or Full-Frame. The vignetting is extreme. 35mm is the widest I'd go on APS-C and even then, the vignetting is pretty bad.
