That's how Animorphs gets ya: one minute you're looking at a cool cover where some kid turns into a hawk, the next you're reading some Kafkaesque existential dread with a dash of body horror and intergalactic war crimes. Loved the series as a kid! :D
Animorphs stories start out like: "Quick Jake! We need to animorph into birds to sneak into the oatmeal factory!" And suddenly you read something like: "Jake fell into the oatmeal, while he was still changing. His exposed nerve endings were scraped and bruised as his skin grew over the oatmeal. He would scream, but his vocal cords had been sliced in two"
I actually still own every Animorphs book that was published, all the original series, the mega-morphs, choose your own adventures and all of the Chronicles. I am definitely making sure my kids read the series because its a good way to sneak in lessons about war not being pretty.

I used to play monster legends so much when I was younger, never spent any money on it though. I stopped playing because of 3 reasons: the waiting times were ridiculous, taking multiple days for anything to happen; the PvE became absurdly difficult because every fight was pretty much a boss battle; and everyone starting using cheats to hack in the strongest monsters and items because nobody wanted to grind or give them money, so PvP became nearly impossible for a kid who didn't know how to do any of that.

Thank you so much for featuring Grimmlins Tale, Lockstin! Your kind words especially for all of the design mean a lot coming from a creative designer like yourself! For anyone who doesn't know, Grimmlins Tale is a mostly solo developed project so far. I've been at it for almost 2 years now working myself as hard as I possibly can. But it's truly awesome and rewarding to see my game played by a big, creative, fun youtuber like Austin, even if it's just in its humble demo state for now. I definitely got a few laughs out of some of the stuff from the other games too. And supporting Coromon is always good for the genre. Great work, man!
For a mostly solo project I'd say it looks freaking awesome, it takes 2 years to make something decent to others with a team, best of luck and I hope to see other people playing the full version in the future! (Or maybe me too, I hope so at least)
Very reminiscent of IronPineapple's series on Souls-like Steam dumpster diving, and I'm totally here for the Pokemon version of the idea. I'd definitely watch this as a regular series!
The intro is pretty much directly ripped from Iron Pineapple's series, so yeah the inspiration is very much so worn on the sleeve. I don't mind that though, I love the souls-like series and this is a solid start to the creature collector series.
Grimmlins is the most interesting for me. I'm a big fan of fairy tales, myths, and legends so this is right up my alley. I'll probably look into it more in the future once it's complete.
Coromons main goal is to quite literally follow the old Pokemon style. Every since Gamefreak turned to the open world rpg style, they decided to return to the pixel style and make something that's amazing. Really good game.
Coromon and Monster Sanctuary are probably the only 2 pokemon-likes that i actually think are legit good game. One is a bit simple but the presentation is great, the other is a bit basic in the visuals but the combat system is very good
Grimmlins Tale looks interesting with their idea, I like the fact of the "monster" being able to talk and stuff like in Digimon, even tho that can lead with weird stuff if not careful because would be weird to treat them like animals like in other monster collecting games... Plus depeding on the way that is handle can be weird having multiple of the same monster, I mean I would personally feel weird because I do care about worldbuilding XD
It seems to take some inspiration from Yo-Kai Watch with how the monsters act and how the gameplay works, but instead of just Japanese folklore creatures, it's primarily European. I think Yo-Kai Watch handles it fine with them more just tagging along with you because you're friends, not monsters you "own", and I figure Grimmlins Tale takes a similar direction.
As someone who watches a lot of Gym Leader Ed, I can't help but wanna call these games Monster Taming games help to give them a bit of separation from Pokemon, but it genuinely makes me happy to see you exploring them and I'd love to see more of this series.
I remember that back then I saw this game in magazines and it looked so awesome to me and I really would have wanted it but unfortunately I didn't have a DS back then. But then years later when I got a DS I had already completely forgotten about that game. I only just now remembered it.
I still hope for the day that it will be revived, but alas. It has some of the most badass creatures I have ever seen. One of them is literally a pair of shoes and yet they still managed managed to make them look sick.
Haven't played Monster legends for years. Damn this game changed a lot... And not necessarily for the better. I definitely remember it's artworks being more interesting.
Oh it's actually still good, plus it has upgraded a lot lately, the reason the other guy here is losing might be because lack of level or you are facing with the Mythical, which are very powerful and i do agree they keep adding generation and it's annoying, cuz you waste your time leveling one from the current season up and then they drop the other one with even more powerful monsters
I just find it kind of “rotting”, and by that I mean it feels great and addicting to begin with, but slowly devolves into avoiding the game and eventually stuffing it in a folder to glance at while looking for something else. It always ends with a somewhat empty-feeling deletion.
+Phantasmal Flight Well, my monsters were definitely powercrept. @@drakonghost6967 Not easy to get Legendaries past 99 though. Of course, after losing to teams in the 70s, I do not think levels are my issue.
At first, I thought Grimmlins Tale would just feel like an awkward fusion of SMT and Pokemon, but no that actually seems pretty cool While it definitely seems a bit hollow for now, it's a Kickstarter demo, I'm not gonna complain on that
Grimmlins is the definite highlight for me. I like that it has a more defined theme for its character and monster design, and the fighting system sounds rad. I hope it gets a full release.
I played monster legends competitively for a while and I can tell you it’s the opposite. The gameplay has MANY features Pokémon doesn’t have and is missing some it has. It is only similar to Pokémon for the first month because you don’t have gimmicky monsters yet. Also, the monster legends story is deep, but dry. It’s only references to other monsters in the game
Grimmlins tale looks amazing especially when you consider the fact that this is pre alpha demo!! I really hope they get more funding since the concept is very cool and I’m looking forward to playing the full version in the future
I remember Animorphs. Read a few of the books as a kid. The one I remember the most is the girl turning into a Dolphin. I always thought it would be so cool to be one myself sense I love swimming a lot. ^_^
@@jimbothetimbo6790 yeah, I started playing it even before Vanoss and such I believe. Pretty sure I started playing it because I watched a lot of PopularMMOS as a kid and he got added into it-
Coromon gets points because it looks like they're putting effort into it. The Animorphs one was just a cash grab. Gremlintale: Aww look, it's also breath of the wild. Lol.
I played Monster Legends for like 5 years, the monster designs are really really great, and the game became super complex with all the new monsters they keep realeasing, buuuut its a ultra heavy pay to win, and even play to have the chance to use this super meta-breaking monster, i miss playing it, but it was for the best
How were you able to that? When I was playing for a month half of the time I upgraded them, died and waiting a day to get random garbage. Half of the game is waiting and trying to do something while I wanted to not wait again.
To be fair the more complex fighting system made the game better. There was a point where there were enough abilities added to be able to strategize, set up and make proper battle plans, but not too many to where you had to keep track of a thousand things at once wich is exactly how it became.

Sadly, the other games aren't available here, because they really improve on the formula (We have Joker 2 that added Size and X/XY version for some monsters, but not even the Pro version). The DQM2 3D remake is just everything you could hope for, and DQMJ3 has a reduced roster, but tons of interesting additions (every monsters can be rode, with subtle variations between monsters).
Oh my god DQMJ was one of my absolute favorite games on the DS. I remember spending so many hours playing it in the 4th grade, and grinding levels so that I could finally beat Dr. Snapped, Black and Gold Dragons, and Demon-at-arms!
Animorphs: you tried Coromon: Pretty good, but could use a bit more fleshing out Grimmlin's Tale: Looking good so far, but a lot of work still needs to be done Ultramon Fight: Cease and Desist Monster Legends: -Just garbage- Apparently it was good back when it first launched, but now it's typical P2W garbage.
The Coromon devs have actively been listening to feedback and updating the game accordingly, which I really respect (Hell, throughout development they've even completely changed Coromon designs after receiving feedback for them (The final Water starter is a great example)).
Ml is good it is just that now most of the good content is locked behind a paywall and the final bosses are too overpowered even against the monsters made to counter them
Omg please do a grimmlins tale video explaining the meaning of each of the fairy tale guys. Im OBSESSED with fairy tales and fairy tale parodies so I would love to see all the references
I use to actually love playing monster legends a couple years back I got fairly addicted but then they introduced like them mythics and it just got more and more pay to win where I couldn’t keep up and I didn’t really feel like it so I ended up just deleting it
Tbh Monster Legends DOES have some really stupid designs for the first couple hundred monsters in the monstagram and it's kinda funny. If you want to play a game of 'spot the difference', then compare Thunder Eagle (really good name btw) with Zapdos. Rope your friends in too if you want. It's definitely gotta do something with how the game was original on Facebook since like the early 2010's. Fortunately, the designs are a lot more creative now (most of the time) and are pretty dope. As for the names though.... Uhh... Not as much. *cough* Slab *cough* I'm definitely interested in a couple of the games, mostly Coromon and Grimmlins Tale, and I honestly never heard about them until now. They seem pretty damn cool. Thanks Mr.Pokétuber for the video.
Wdym "couple hundreds" lol Literally only monsters up to rare and epic rarity are reskins of old monsters, from legendary to mythical (90% of monsters) it's all original designs everytime with like 2 monster exceptions
Oh my god. That's one of the few reasons I uninstalled the game in a matter of hours or even minutes. The designs literally border on copyright infringement.
There’s also Monsters of Etheria which was based on an old pokemon roleplay/ combat game called “Pokemon Fighters EX” It’s kinda different from other roblox games which try to be like pokemon, but it’s still really good and I recommend giving it a shot
@@Allé_Hoopa_Ring Man I wish someone gave the same treatment to pokemon universe after the purge. I miss being a trainer with player controlled pokemon or being someone else's pokemon. Most players were baconhairs that abused the pokeball mechanics but every now and then you could get some real good rp and fights.
Grimmlins Tale reminds me a lot of the way the manga does pokemon battles, where it's more like a chess match, with the trainers being the King. You can win by slowly taking out the enemy pokemon OR you could knock out the trainer/force them to concede
This was fun. I’m legitimately interested in trying coromon, and I plan on following grimmlins tale to see how it goes because it has a lot of potential. If you do another one of these you should try nexomon or its sequel nexomon: extinction. The former is a mobile game with a lot of the shortcomings of a mobile game but it’s still fun with a full story. The latter is a full game and it’s a little simple but I enjoyed it a lot when I played it, it’s on the switch so it still has the benefit of being mobile
Would actually love a full series of this. I've been wanting to find a GOOD Pokemon-like and if you play them so I don't have to, even better. Full support on this one 👍
A good monster catcher series I would recommend is Shin Megami Tensei. It wouldn't work for this series because the shortest games are still over 20 hours but I thought I'd mention it anyway.
You should check out Monster Sanctuary, it's one of my favorite monster collectors. It has a so much variety and the battles are tough! Wish it had a mobile port. :D
10:40 so true! I used to play it in middle school but I quit when timers for things like breeding started lasting 2-3 days. My adhd brain can not handle that lol
Grimmlins Tale really scratches that itch left on my heart by Kameo years ago! Down to the fairy tale aesthetic, just punching enemies as a human and summoning monsters to help you (reminiscent of the unreleased game cube version), also did you say a riding mechanic?! I'm so hyped for it!
Actually, the kids turning into animals thing is tertiary in Animorphs. The alien invasion is secondary. Animorphs' primary topic is the abject horror of war and how easily average people (particularly those who become soldiers) turn into monsters because of war (there's literally a point in the later books where the main characters argue over whether they should not-alive a massive number of the slug aliens on a transport ship by flushing them into space when said aliens were completely incapacitated and helpless at the time).
@@MegaMilesprower 54 main series books, and 10 companion books. Admittedly, only 8 of the 10 companion books are canon to the main continuity. Individually, each main series book is a quick read, but the whole series is quite girthy.
Yeah, I actually own all the animorph books that were printed and will definitely show it to my kids, but yeah they will be young teens or so because of how dark it gets later.
Animorphs starts with an alien dying and his dying screams scarring them and giving them trauma for life. And then most of get sliced in half, see their friends die, and become disabled for life. @@chaoscrow27 that hurts the game a little. Last time I played the game(lite) I pulled mon that learned dig and thus I could get way past the demo end trigger
Honestly, my favorite Pokemon Like game right now is Monster Hunter Stories 2. Since it is a Monster Collector, super free in how you build your Monstie because you can literally give any Monstie any attack but doesn't mean they'll be best with said attack. The Kinship Attacks are like the Z Moves but better. Game does get really challenging as well which is very satisfying when you get past those parts.
I love the concept of "workemon" where you catch employees for your company and treat them horribly for profit, but it gets unplayable a few hours in because of the micro transactions.
12:06 that's just Zapdos. 12:07 that's just Lapras. 12:16 that's just a fricking panda! Also the Grimmlins game seems pretty good, reminds me of Legends Arceus
I mean, Monster Legends were actually pretty fun on the Facebook days, and if I remember well, most timed building wait times were actually lower on the early game (despite increasing drastically over time), and quite a few mons are actually rather cool (but also rare af and often the good looking monsters aren't that strong, so there's that)
I've had this growing frustration with the VERY long-running trend of calling anything in the Monster Collection genre a 'Pokemon-like/clone' The majority of the time, this is an extremely surface-level look at the game and calling it a clone for DARING to be in the same genre as another game. You know what games had Monster Collection before Pokemon? Shin Megami Tensei and Dragon Quest V. So is Pokemon a clone of those? Apparently not because people still compare SMT and the Dragon Quest Monsters spin-off to Pokemon. It's important to recognize what a game is actually like. Some games are very obviously trying to capture the very specific feel and ideas of Pokemon. While others share absolutely NOTHING with Pokemon beyond using monsters as party members. It's usually very easy to tell when a game is heavily influenced by Pokemon. 1: A major focus on types and type advantages, to the point where it becomes the main component of battle, is typically the major way a game feels like Pokemon. Of course most Monster Collection games have types, but it's how the types are used that change the feel. 2: Another way games feel like Pokemon is simply due to the angle. Pokemon has kept this 'over the shoulder, health/stats to the side' style for it's entire lifespan, only ever changing in the 3D games. Obviously other games often have this angle, even non-Monster RPGs. But you can very clearly tell when the positioning of monsters and the menu is meant to replicate Pokemon. 3: Games trying to be like Pokemon also commonly have a 'be the best, beat these totally-not-gym-leaders' structure. Even if becoming the best is a common theme in Monster Collection, Pokemon does it in a very specifically structured way. 4: Evolution is also done in a specific way in Pokemon. Most commonly through levels, but sometimes items, trade, or a couple other specific ways. And they never, EVER, go above 2 evolutions in a linear path, even if it might have branching evolutions. Also worth saying that just because a game is mimicking Pokemon, doesn't make it bad. But they have a much harder time standing out from it and all the other games that try to do the same. And that they don't represent the genre as a whole. If I were to place the games in this video on whether or not they are actively TRYING to be Pokemon, it'd be like this; Animorphs: No. The structure is simply entirely different, along with no types. The formula of Animorphs just lends itself well to collecting animals. Coromon: Yes. Obviously. Types camera position, front and back sprites, evolutions. It's all very blatant in it's inspirations. Grimmline Tale: Of what little there is, no. Pokemon has never had non-turn based combat in it's mainline games. Even Legends Arceus is still ultimately turn-based. I'd compare it more to Ni No Kuni. Ultramon Fight: Well yeah. It's a literal bootleg game. And I've played my fair share of bootleg mobile games. For the likes of both Pokemon and Digimon actually. Monster Legends: Well, no. It's just a generic stock-standard mobile game using monsters instead of whatever else this exact same mobile game format uses, nothing overtly Pokemon about it. As if my long comment wasn't evidence enough, I'm very passionate about this genre. It's my favorite. And I can't help but take videos like these as an opportunity to try and at least explain that, JUST because a game involves collecting monsters, does not make it a Pokemon Clone. I know it's just a standard clickbait title to get people attention on this Pokemon channel, I just wanted to express my thoughts on why I find the mentality that some people genuinely have towards this genre. And if Lockstin ever did do more videos like this, thought I'm sure he'd still title it 'Pokemon-likes,' I'll give my thoughts on the games and whether or not they are actual Pokemon-likes, rather than just games in the Monster Collection genre.
I re-read animorphs this year and I CANNOT BELIEVE that it was written for kids. That was a book series with the moral "there are no winners in war". Literally most of its main characters die gruesomely by the end. It's my favorite book series of all time its so good
See that coromon is in this video. Been curious because it's hitting Switch soon. Also curious of nexomon. They're currently on switch but waiting for the 2 pak physical copy 👀
Monster Hunter Stories is also a semi Pokémon like and is freaking amazing. Definitely should check it out if you haven't already. The first one is for 3DS only but the second is on both switch and steam (both with demos available). You don't exactly need to have played the first for the second but it helps you understand the story just a slight bit better.
Ohhh man, I remember the Animorphs game... but for all the wrong reasons. It was the first time I ever played a game as a kid and said to myself, "You know what? This game is _not_ good." Truly the root of my modern gaming cynicism.
a long time ago there was a fame called mighty monsters(bland name i know) and it was what got me into pokemon, because it went away after a good few tears and i was searching desperately for a replacement. i still remember the joy i had playing that game
We're working on a Pokémon-inspired monster catching game as well, called Enigmon. Blending aspects of Pokémon with other monster catching games to create something fresh but familiar is the goal.
Didn't Monster Legends make a bunch of TH-camr Monsters? I would've loved to have seen your reaction to that. Also some of those were Zapdos and Lapras ripoffs weren't they...
I absolutely LOVE monster legends, and i totally agree with your opinions on it. It's very pay-to-win, and those aspects have just become worse over time. However, it has a lot of upside you can see after you get your first mythical monster. It has a surprisingly deep and thought-out story (at least for the kind of game it is), and once you get past the early days, the designs and battles are really good and fun! there's a huge amount of strategy in it, and while you usually need to have the best monsters to win (anything with "pierce" is almost an auto-win) i still think it's at least a decent game with a lot of pros compared to its cons (and it's definitely better than almost all the other "monster collection" games on the appstore). the designs, animations and overall art quality for the mythic monsters are absolutely incredible, almost all of the monsters you saw were from 2016 and only some of them (like pandalf and firesaur) got a graphical update in like 2019. my point is, i feel like it's at least a *little* more worthwhile than your average appstore garbage.
As a Pokemon like game i literally like evo creo a lot its great way of monster environment show case with mosters and the way how the attacks are saved so that we can use them again + no pp system but a recharge system
Oh my gosh, another Evo Creo fan. It was really fun for me, but I think I found a glitch when I was surfing in lava and I got stuck and can't mount out from the lave pit, and I think I saved to fight a boss, so I got stuck. And I was really at the end game and was too lazy to do it all over again. Also in the demo version, there's like a boss at the cliff we started, since I can't get the full version yet, i just kept grinding and beat that boss around the starting areas
I liked monster legends as a kid. Though yeah there’s a lot of waiting involved. It has some neat monster designs. I really like Drop Elemental. I think it’s a neat spin on a water elemental.
I do actually kinda like playing Monster Legends and I gotta say that its actually super fun, from meeting new monsters to fighting others, its actually pretty good
I started playing monster legends when it released and since then I have played almost every day, with some weeks without the game for personal reasons It's one if not the game I have put the most time into, i just love the battle system so much, it's so much more interesting than pokemon 99% of monsters have unique designs that are not recolors
Yeah, Animorphs starts out fairly typical, but then starts delving into the horrors that war can cause. It's one of my favorite series, and I actually own every book printed.

For a mostly solo project I'd say it looks freaking awesome, it takes 2 years to make something decent to others with a team, best of luck and I hope to see other people playing the full version in the future! (Or maybe me too, I hope so at least)
Best of luck. Your project look very promising.
Very reminiscent of IronPineapple's series on Souls-like Steam dumpster diving, and I'm totally here for the Pokemon version of the idea. I'd definitely watch this as a regular series!
this, for a second i got confused and thought this was a spinoff on his channel lol
In the description he mentions getting the inspiration for this from Iron Pinapple.
The intro is pretty much directly ripped from Iron Pineapple's series, so yeah the inspiration is very much so worn on the sleeve.
I don't mind that though, I love the souls-like series and this is a solid start to the creature collector series.
@@webbowser8834 Yeah pretty much

Wow, Coromon looks pretty legit. I hope this becomes a series, because I've love to see Nexomon on here!
nexomon needs more love
great game
I like the simplistic designs of coromon it brings me back to the early days of pokemon with gens 1-3. More detailed doesn't always mean better.
Coromons main goal is to quite literally follow the old Pokemon style. Every since Gamefreak turned to the open world rpg style, they decided to return to the pixel style and make something that's amazing. Really good game.
Coromon is pretty good. It's pretty much Pokemon with Zelda like dungeons. Definitely a game you SHOULD play.
He already did a video going over each Nexomon in Extinction if I recall correctly.
Coromon and Monster Sanctuary are probably the only 2 pokemon-likes that i actually think are legit good game. One is a bit simple but the presentation is great, the other is a bit basic in the visuals but the combat system is very good
I would add Temtem to that list. And Yokai Watch :D
try evocreo its actually pretty good and u could say the devs are passionate on it
@@Arkernret Hell yeah, Evocreo. The dialogue can be pretty freaking funny at times
You should try Nexomon it has one of the stories for a Pokemon-like
I'd say Grimmlins Tale looks dope
Grimmlins Tale looks interesting with their idea, I like the fact of the "monster" being able to talk and stuff like in Digimon, even tho that can lead with weird stuff if not careful because would be weird to treat them like animals like in other monster collecting games... Plus depeding on the way that is handle can be weird having multiple of the same monster, I mean I would personally feel weird because I do care about worldbuilding XD
Great point, but consider a full party of gingerbread boys.
You should try out the demo! It’s chaos and I love it!!!
It seems to take some inspiration from Yo-Kai Watch with how the monsters act and how the gameplay works, but instead of just Japanese folklore creatures, it's primarily European. I think Yo-Kai Watch handles it fine with them more just tagging along with you because you're friends, not monsters you "own", and I figure Grimmlins Tale takes a similar direction.
it's similar to Yokai-Watch
and i like it, it's pretty great

Spectrobes looks really fascinating tbh.

I also had not played for years, and I am rather lost on the Generations thing.
Also, I keep losing in PvP, even with way lower leveled enemies.
@@Bezaliel13 I played it a while ago, and the "generations thing" was a way to reset the ,eta and reduce powercreep

While it definitely seems a bit hollow for now, it's a Kickstarter demo, I'm not gonna complain on that
It also sounds like something Japan would love
Grimmlins is the definite highlight for me. I like that it has a more defined theme for its character and monster design, and the fighting system sounds rad. I hope it gets a full release.

I played monster legends competitively for a while and I can tell you it’s the opposite. The gameplay has MANY features Pokémon doesn’t have and is missing some it has. It is only similar to Pokémon for the first month because you don’t have gimmicky monsters yet. Also, the monster legends story is deep, but dry. It’s only references to other monsters in the game

It is!! I hope it’s gets as much funding as possible so the dev can make it a great game in the future

If I were to place the games in this video on whether or not they are actively TRYING to be Pokemon, it'd be like this;
Animorphs: No.
Please make a series out of this, i REALLY wanna watch you play Loomian Legacy

I'd love to see more videos like this one.
I liked monster legends as a kid. Though yeah there’s a lot of waiting involved.
It has some neat monster designs. I really like Drop Elemental. I think it’s a neat spin on a water elemental.
I do actually kinda like playing Monster Legends and I gotta say that its actually super fun, from meeting new monsters to fighting others, its actually pretty good
Amazing! So excited for Grimmlins
Same! Really hoping it hits its stretch goals!
I started playing monster legends when it released and since then I have played almost every day, with some weeks without the game for personal reasons
It's one if not the game I have put the most time into, i just love the battle system so much, it's so much more interesting than pokemon
99% of monsters have unique designs that are not recolors
Nexomon 2 us really good
Animorphs is also allegedly about the horrors of child soldiers, complete with:
-High levels of trauma
-Child deaths
Yeah, Animorphs starts out fairly typical, but then starts delving into the horrors that war can cause. It's one of my favorite series, and I actually own every book printed.
Coromon actually does have an exp share! You get it from the knowledge quiz in the library iirc
Grimmlins looks sick. Finally a bit more live action game play 🤩
Oh hell yeah
