Why The USWNT Pay Dispute Is More Complicated Than You Think

  • Spearheaded by star players like Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, the United States Women's National Soccer Team (USWNT) have been at loggerheads with the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) over a dispute regarding equal pay with the USMNT for some time.
Last week, a US judge rejected the USWNT players' claims that they were underpaid in comparison to the men, in a decision that have divided opinion. Once again, HITC Sevens attempts to sort the fact from the fiction and lays out what we do and don't know about the pay and revenue of the four-time FIFA Women's World Cup winners.

Missed the important piece of the judgement that disclosed that the women where offered the same deal as the men but rejected it in favour of there current deal.

You also have to take into account that the women claimed they would’ve been paid more on the men’s deal. Which, while true, doesn’t mean anything really. The women were offered the same deal as the men and chose to negotiate their own deal instead. That, to be blunt, is their fault.

Hitc has gone all the way round the houses and deliberately made a simple dispute unnecessarily complex . The dispute is about the women’s Pay that resulted from the contract that was voluntarily agreed upon by the women’s team ,despite the availability of the contract that was available to both the men and women’s team , that was accepted by the men .

The US women’s team is already the most funded women’s team in the world. They’re just annoying brats at this point

This is a completely insane video. The fact they lost all claims relative to pay in a summary judgment suggests it's not really that complicated - they signed a CBA, then tried to use the courts to change it in their favor.

Bruh this case got thrown out because these women forgot that the terms they are currenty complaining about are terms the negotiated by them. They chose to opt out of the same deal that the men have which was more performance based rather appearance based. Breaking it down further you have to look at economics of football and well anything else governed by supply and demand and that's where they fall short. What I see more than anything else is femenism being pushed in football with this case and I feel like we should be careful how we approach this situation without getting too emotionally involved without understanding the dynamics involved in this case. In all honesty sounds like buyers remorse because they weren't brave enough to back their abilities with a performance based style of pay and besides even rapinoe who seems to be leading the charge is being disingenuous knowing full well that filling up stadiums increases revenue but hey equal pay right.

I don’t see why it should be a dispute in the first place. Much less fans, much poorer quality, much less sponsorship deals. The woman’s game would fall apart

They got the contract that they asked for. They negotiated one that carried less risk than the men's. But that also means that it carried less potential for reward. Now they want none of the risk and all of the reward, but you can't have it both ways.

Why don’t both of them just donate all their wages to charity like the English men. Then there’d be no argument

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but they're the one that negociated to get this deal and accepted it. You can't just go to court to get a deal you don't like anymore to be cancelled, you have to wait the end of the contract. Though I have to say, I'm pretty sad to see so many "HURR DURR WOMEN SUCK AT FOOTBALL, NOBODY WATCHES" comments from people who couldn't be bothered to watch the video, or simply refuse to admit that people other than them might be interested in playing or watching football

"Complicated" is when someone who knows something is wrong tries to rationalize it the otherway. The issue is simple. Women's should be paid equally; therefore, their pay should be reduced as right now they are paid way more than men as a percentage of revenue. Also, "separate but equal" gender segregation can never be equal and must be done away with; therefore, no more men's soccer, no more women's soccer - just soccer. Everyone will compete and the top players who make the teams male or female will be paid whatever top players get paid.

This pretty much misses the point of the ruling. Revenue generated doesn't really matter. We are only talking about earnings and pay structure. If the WNT players earn more money per game, regardless of how much more or less money they generate then there can be no illegal discrimination because factually they are not paid less. Differences is pay are a result of the differences in the collective bargaining agreements struck between USSF and the men's and women's respective player associations and upon which the players agreed. Instead of filing a lawsuit the WNT could have tried to restructure their CBA to be identical to the men's except that the WNT's players preferred, quite naturally, a different compensation package ( encompassing various guarantees). Basically the judge said that the WNT cannot agree to a contract with a high guarantees/ low bonus mix, perform really well, realize they would have made more money with high bonuses, and then insist that they should still keep the high guarantees AND be paid high bonuses anyway. That's not to say that maybe the WNT shouldn't be paid more money. Maybe they should. But they would be better served trying to get a new CBA rather than alleging discrimination where none exists. The grass is always greener on the other side of the pitch it seems.

Speaking of the US, can you make a video on the SaveTheCrew movement, and how the entire MLS pitched in to prevent the Columbus Crew from moving to Austin? A good story on how football and passion won against greed.
