You mention Assyria; it’s interesting where there’s football clubs who effectively serve as national teams in nations without their own official nation state. How about 7 clubs that effectively exist as unofficial national teams? Barcelona being one famous example for Catalonia, also several Soviet era clubs from the smaller republics, like Ararat Yerevan effectively serving as the Armenian national team when officially there was no such team, same for Georgia, Lithuania, Ukraine etc

Sweden has a few of these. we have Dalkurd (kurds) and a whole lot of Syrianska and Syrianska-Arameiska. the biggest Syrianska club is also based in Södertälje so they are big rivals with Assyriska. they probably don't like how Alfie used a pic of syrianska in this video

@@jimothypersson8306 Yeah the Assyrsika Syrianska rivalry is insane, since they're both Assyrian identified. That was worth a mention imo. This video was really interesting, but could be expanded upon a lot in another video, hopefully.

Super video! I work in Södertälje and a couple of your pictures are actually from Assyriska's rivals Syrianska whom claim to be the SYRIAN national team. Being called a Syrian or an Assyrian is a pretty big deal in Södertälje but as I understand it, they come from the same part of the world.

Is it really surprising that football clubs were founded by religious institutions? Certainly in the UK when most clubs were founded the only forms of socialising were the church (of various denominations), workers institutions and work itself. These were the areas where people socialised and part of socialising often involves physical activity. You could do a similar video on rugby, boxing and many other sports.

Fun Fact: If you heard correctly, important events relating to Papacy is somewhat linked to the football club's success at the same year. Karol Wojtyla was also a die hard fan of the Liverpool Football Club. In 1978, the club won the second European Cup in a row several months before Karol Wojtyla was sworn as Pope John Paul II. Then, just only 53 days after his passing, Liverpool won the historic Champions League Final at Istanbul, with Jerzy Dudek claimed that the victory, especially the crucial saves against Andriy Shevchenko, was dedicated to Pope given that he was also played for Cracovia, the same club Wojtyla played.
Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI) was Bayern Munich fans. When he left the position as Pope in 2013, Bayern Munich won the historic Treble with Jupp Heynckes 3 months later. A year after he became the Pope, Germany hosted the World Cup, despite not being the World Champions.

I played for a church team in the mid 2000's in youth football, early FC United fans might remember Castleton Gabriels FC, used to be when founded the players had to attend church every sunday in order to be allowed to play in that week and continue going after the season ended, became Rochdale Town FC then dissolved. Miss that club, they scrapped the need to be Catholic in the 80s and was fun to play for.

7:39 This is so on on so many level. Catholic Church never had problem with Galileo Galilei's astronomical studies. Further more Catholic Church was PAYING him for his work as physicists. Problem was with Galileo's theological arguments. He was asked by bishop and future pope to stick with Copernicus approach and DO NOT write his own theology. In the first trial Church stated that Galileo's theories my be true, they won't be proclaimed as heretical, but Galileo cannot talk about them as a fact, but only a hypothesis, until it will be confirmed.
What did Galileo? He wrote a paper where he considered this theory a fact, he call Pope an idiot and made theological arguments. I want remind you Galileo was on a Church payroll and current Pope actively promoting Galileo work when he was still cardinal. And he was sentenced for house arrest (but after 3 years of house arrest he was allowed to leave his villa), not for this theory but for disobeying and insulting the Church.
Galileo was asked to focus on physics and maths, was payed by the Church, and do not make theological arguments until his theory was confirmed to be true (which was not, because he put Sun in the centre of Universe, while we know now that Universe has not centre, and Sun is orbiting a black hole; but he had the part that Earth orbits the Sun right). What he did? He insulted the Pope and got a slap on the wrist...

Alfie, as a Palace fan, would love to see you do a video upon the claim that Cystal Palace is actually the oldest football club still going... 1861 founding of the amature team and 1905 when the club became the club we know today

    • @pjkerrigan20
      @pjkerrigan20 ปีที่แล้ว

Would love to see a video on this! From my research, it looks like the 1861 Palace team stopped playing for a couple decades before the 1905 team was founded. Both were founded at the same location and with the same name tho lol, the original FA Cup co-founding Palace is definitely our club’s heritage.
The problem comes, I think, in the claim that we’re the oldest club or oldest continuously running club. I don’t think we can claim that just bc of that big gap in the late 19th century. In my opinion our crest should include 1861 and 1905 on it tho.
In any case I think Alfie could make a great video on this. It’s been ages since he’s done a Palace-specific video. COYP

Is right. Formed by the St. Domingo church on Netherfield Road. Changed name to Everton. Played originally on Priory Road, then Stanley Park, then Anfield. Was the first team to bring a major trophy back to Anfield (the Football League Trophy in 1891 in the third year of the league). The split came in 1892 when the Chairman, who was also the landlord, hiked the rent up considerably. Half the Board did not agree to pay, so found land on Mere Green and built Goodison Park and retained the name Everton, the others on the Board who stayed at Anfield founded that other club.

One thing to point out, that you didn't, is that the 5 petaled rose often found a club football badges is a christian symbol that is usually associated with protestantism. @geordiewishart1683 ปีที่แล้ว

Do you mean the Luther rose?
The Luther seal or Luther rose is a widely recognized symbol for Lutheranism. It was the seal that was designed for Martin Luther at the behest of John Frederick of Saxony in 1530, while Luther was staying at the Coburg Fortress during the Diet of Augsburg. Lazarus Spengler, to whom Luther wrote his interpretation below, sent Luther a drawing of this seal. Luther saw it as a compendium or expression of his theology and faith, which he used to authorize his correspondence. Luther informed Philipp Melanchthon on 15 September 1530, that the Prince had personally visited him in the Coburg fortress and presented him with a signet ring, presumably displaying the seal.[2]

They were formed by the local priest to give Irish immigrants a chance to play football as they were not allowed to play for any other city club. @@andrewccochrane8052 Missing my point by miles. The club was born from the need of Glasgow’s Irish Catholic community so naturally its fan and player base would originate from that same pocket of society. However, the fact the club was born within one community didn’t mean it was closed to people from other backgrounds and despite early internal pressure to be an “all Catholic” Club, from its earliest days Celtic recruited players and attracted support from all walks of life. My point is that Celtic are wrongly known as a Catholic club, they are not.
In contrast to this, Rangers’ links with Protestantism and unionism were developed through choice. Indeed some might argue that Rangers did not become a Protestant club but rather an anti-Catholic one. To address your comment though, Celtic's first non-Catholic signing was in fact 1890

So a quick look through our history shows in undeniable fact that our club has signed Catholics and that any myth or lies that our club is built on a ‘sectarian signing policy’ is exactly that, a lie and is very easily dismissed
      Those players include -
Pat Lafferty 1886, Tom Dunbar 1891, Jay Tutty 1899, Archie Kyle 1904, Willie Kivlichan 1906, Colin Mainds 1906, Tom Murray 1907, William Brown 1912, Joe Donnachie 1914, John Jackson 1917.
These are players only known openly in history, as religion was not as openly discussed as it is now, as being of the Catholic faith. However even at a glance quite a few players who were openly practicing Catholic and easily dispels the myth peddled by those with an agenda
Moving on there is many more examples of players who starred for our club prior to the arrival of Maurice and these included -
Laurie Blyth 1951, Don Kitchenbrand 1955, Hugh O’Neil 1976, John Spencer 1985 (Just three years before Johnstone’s arrival!)
Of course since Johnston’s signing and the scrutiny of the media, introduction of social media the knowledge of players faiths is more open and discussed. In many ways the only issues and problems caused, seem to be by media and supporters of clubs outwith our own
Players openly practice their faith in a Rangers jersey and it has not an issue inside Ibrox, the only people making it that way have nothing to do with the club. The recent coverage players such as Jon Daly has received only go to prove that
The truth is always available and next time someone spouts rubbish about our club you can tell them how wrong they are
This isn’t an apology for our culture or an attempt to distort history, it simply answers the question
The history of our club is a beautiful and wonderful thing, four young lads founding one of the biggest clubs in the world for the love of football only
They had a dream and now we are living it
