  • Exploring abandoned mines sometimes turns into cave exploration. This pre-Civil War abandoned mine is one of those places. We rappel into an old silver mine with origins dating back to 1847 that intersects a cave system that once held elaborate crystal formations that would rival any protected cave system today. It is difficult to tell the difference on what open voids in the mountain are man-made or natural in this one. There are reports from other explorers in the past that this abandoned mine is haunted as well.
Joining us in this adventure is @ZiaMountainAdventures and @OnTheNextEpisode , who will share this experience on their respective channels with their own unique perspective.
This abandoned mine exploring video is shot and presented in 4K and HDR. I recommend for your viewing experience to watch this video with a TV, monitor, or mobile device with a 4K/HDR compatible display. It really does make a difference!
A special thanks to R.W. Eveleth and NMIMT for information and knowledge gained from their respective publications.

@s8j0Iseeyou28hfb I'm glad you recognized it! Please be a bit more discretionary when alluding to location names! Thanks for watching!

Very cool having the cross-section map of the mine overlaid onto the landscape shot at the beginning of the video! Your descent looked very smooth and controlled. There is a mine over here in California that has the same set of circumstances. The huge Kokoweef Mine busted into a crystal cavern of sorts for which tours were given for a short time in the 1960s. Mining still goes on there at the Kokoweef Mine today intermittently as a small time mining outfit tries to find a supposed river of gold deep inside the mountain that a prospector allegedly found in the 1800s. Liked all the detailed history and geology you provided in your video. Very cool! The false-floored stope was unsettling. The time it took to hear the splashes was impressive. Enjoyed the video immensely! 👍

Hey, Frank! I'm glad you liked it! I encountered several technical glitches editing this one, as I was hoping to have this one out several weeks ago. That's interesting the likeness of this mine and the California one. Are there any existing photographs of that crystal cavern in CA? The history of this mine is rather colorful than most. That false floor situation was hair-raising, especially with the amount of weight that probably shock-loaded it. That water down there is reported to be poisonous due to the mineralization. The lead and arsenic levels are high enough to kill cattle when the drainage tunnel was functioning. Even a decade ago, the groundwater in my area was still affected by this mine's mineral deposit, and that's 50 miles away!

So glad I could be a part of this through your amazing field and editing work. I was always curious about this spot whilst in college and all the info I found about it made me want more. Sadly few explorers have documented this site. Glad I found you, I really like your style. I find it easier to follow, understand and digest in a single sitting than other cavers hahaha (no offense to the other amazing exploration channels out there or in this comments section).

Thank you so much! I do my best to make my videos with some extra context to help convey the actual experience. Some of the most time-consuming tasks are the animations with the maps and graphics. I'm not aware that anyone else is doing that in this genre because it's just easier not to, lol. Just trying to differentiate a bit!

Hey thanks, Todd! After scrubbing through the footage making this video, I think we need to get back there... the north end of the "chasm of doom" is our drop point...
