That is a double neck eight string steel guitar. My father played steel guitar in a western swing band after he returned from Germany at the end of WWll. He bought a Rickenbacker double neck eight string steel guitar in 1947. My father passed away in 2008, but I still have his 1947 Rickenbacker double neck steel guitar with its original case, metal finger picks, and slide. This instrument is used in a wide variety of music, including Hawaiian.

Mentioning the Hollywood STAR of the THREE. Linda, Emmylou and Dolly. There is a video from THE DOLLY SHOW in the 70s with the three to react too...... It is from 76/77 video on TH-cam with Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris. Song - The Sweetest Gift. It does seem like a Gospel song as they harmonize in Country/Gospel fashion.
Dolly, Linda and Emmylou also had a top 20 hit with the cover of - "To Know Him is to Love him" in the 80s they released a Album. The 70s teaming up on the Dolly show probably inspired it.
ON THE LATE SHOW in 1999 The TRIO teamed up again for a LIVE performance. It had also played and featured a GLASS HARMONICA that Benjamin Franklin invented..... video posted in low def song - After the Gold Rush from a new CD they put out together.
The Trio also got together in 1977 and a LIVE video is on TH-cam of them doing the song - AppleJack. .... the song was on one of Dolly's albums.
EMMYLOU HARRIS found a home in Country from her original California Folk start to Country/Bluegrass. She is in the Country Hall of Fame and her rendition of - SWEET DREAMS is also awesome with a different tone to her voice than Patsy Cline. Also TOPOP here Live performance of - TOGETHER AGAIN is HD a ballad of course in traditional Country fashion.

Linda Ronstadt had the most incredible voice - a huge range and put so much FEELING and EMOTION into her lyrics and singing. She will be one of my favorites for as long as I live. I'm 72, so I sort of "grew up" with Linda Ronstadt's music starting in the 1960s until her retirement due to her loss of voice from an incurable illness. So fricking sad, she is incredible.

She's more known for her covers of other people's songs than for her own compositions. She was such a powerful singer, and a perfectionist.

All her solo releases are pure gold, and then she teamed up with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris in a group call Trio. That group is what got the star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Harmony just doesn't get better than that.

She had one of the most gorgeous voices ever. Her vocals were amazing! Loved her ❤ The instrument is typically used in country music. Roy Orbison was a country singer. I think of Linda as multi-genre with rock being the one I think of as primary for Linda. She has Mexican roots and did do a Latin album later in her career. She might have been the top selling female vocalist of the 1970’s, along with Barbra Streisand. I would recommend “You’re No Good”, a rock song and shows a different side of Linda.

Linda has been a favorite of mine for years! Her Latin album is amazing. Her cover of Desperado is really good. I was fortunate enough to see her in concert in the early ‘80’s and she sounds as perfect in person as on her albums. She made two cd’s with Dolly Parton and EmmyLou Harris called “Trio” and “Trio II” heavenly harmonies 💙👵🏼✌🏼

Both Don Henley and Glen Frey from the Eagles got their start singing backup for Linda. That instrument was a steel guitar. They were used a lot in the 1970s. There was a huge "Country Western" influence in pop music back then. I enjoyed seeing your reaction to one of my favorite ballads from that era. Thanks 🙂

Mike Nesmith of The Monkees wrote "Different Drum" and wanted to put it on their TV show but the producers didn't think it sounded like a Monkees' song. Nesmith told them, "but I'm a Monkee". They said no, so he gave the song to Linda.

Welcome to another wonderful and deep rabbit hole. You are in for a ride. I don’t think Linda wrote but sang up a storm. One of my favorites is “Alison” a cover of an Elvis Costello song (rabbit hole). I don’t think there’s a video but the album cover picture of her tying her roller skates will just have to do. ❤

In the 1970s, she was the queen of rock as an interpretive artist. Members of the Eagles were in her band in the early 1970s. The song snippet at the end was "Get Closer."
The instrument is a pedal steel guitar.
You need to listen to Roy Orbison, who originally sang this song. He had an amazing voice.

Linda was my first album cover crush, then hearing her voice just made me fall in love with her even more. Her first big hit was when she was with Stone Pony's singing "Different Drum", a song written by Mike Nesmith of the Monkees. She went out on her own doing hits like "You're No Good" and "Blue Bayou". No matter what genre of music she did, she was amazing.

True. The producers of the Monkees TV show didn't think it sounded like a Monkees song and wouldn't let them record it for the show. So, Nesmith gave it to Linda.

That's a slide guitar. You play it laid out on your lap, with a metal sleeve (slide) on your left index finger, and a pick in your right. Instead of chords formed by fingertips, you press the slide up and down on the neck, modulating the notes that way. That what gives the notes that elastic, wah-wah sound. :)
Linda released a beautiful album of Mexican songs. My favorite is "Guadalupe." Lovely song.

That high pitch is the steel guitar (uses a slide). It's used in Classic Country music a lot from the 40's-70's. Probably a Pedal Steel guitar, with foot pedals for pitch shifting.
