Your joystick saga punched me right in the feels. I know that frustrating feeling of buyer’s remorse all too well. Also, the look on your face when you shared how much the part cost was priceless. Hoping this video gets enough views to pay your JD bill. 😅
I can identify with your journey. On most projects, I find myself fixing something that doesn't work or building something to make the job easier. You just have to keep the end in sight. Patience is a virtue.
Thanks for the video Neil ! I appreciate your review of the skid loader question: "Did the seller know or was it just the result of unfortunate timing?" I liked that you didn't assume bad faith in others when there was no evidence. I respect a guy that isn't quick to blame someone else for their problems. I believe that our appraisal of others is often a reflection of our own character. I don't know whether the seller understood he was selling you a broken machine but I am pretty sure that Neil Koch is a guy with integrity and honor. Keep on truckin with a smile buddy !
Your honesty and openness about your journey are truly refreshing. It's incredible to see how you've overcome challenges and continued to push forward. This video will undoubtedly resonate with many and encourage others to keep striving for their dreams. Keep up the fantastic work and thank you for sharing this part of your life with us🙂
I can just feel the frustration through the screen 😅 troubleshooting equipment like that and having it fail over and over is REALLY putting patience to the test. And the best feeling ever when you have it working again. I like that you are giving people the benefit of the doubt. Good man 👍
Hi Neil on electrical connections you can use silicone spray that will prevent moisture and corrosion I have been using it on my boat for the past 20 years
Hate you had the anxiety of newly purchased equipment with issues. Glad you got it resolved quickly and easily compared to chasing your tail on end. Trading work is the way to go!
Your videos are my first watch Sunday morning with my coffee, and Derek's videos from ViceGripGarage are my first watch Friday afternoon after getting home from work and winding down. So I was actually surprised when you said bleep bloop it on the web, what a great reference! Keep up the awesome videos and thanks for sharing them with us!
Neil… I hate using balky equipment. Chainsaws that won’t restart, weedeaters that don’t unspool, a tiller that shears pins constantly, a tractor that shuts off in the middle of a task… nothing turns a job into torture, quicker. For me, it isn’t the annoyance of having to fix it… or even the cost. It is the loss of time and the rescheduling of everything around the task that chafes me the most. Hopefully you have this problem debugged. This is a good sized project. Having bartered your way into it I hope you come out on the long side of the stick!!!
You're so right! I hated losing time to work more than anything really. And then the time to diagnose and fix the problem too. Fingers crossed that we have some smooth sailing now! This is a huge project. I'm hoping everything falls into place and it turns out to be mutually beneficial. Worst part is that it's a good ways from home, but I'm committed now. Wish me luck!
Man, I feel for you when it comes to dealing with John Deere. You are certainly not alone with the sticker shock when dealing with that company. I've read nightmare stories of farmers paying outrageous prices to get their broken-down equipment back running. They are left helpless in the fields as the equipment has become so electronic intensive it's nearly impossible to repair it without their trained service technicians. You are very lucky you managed to take care of it yourself. It could have been much worse. Nothing brings the negativity out of me like a visit to a John Deere dealer. I've always admired your skills and ambition but I think in this case it may have been easier and less time-consuming to paint the truck yourself. Or at least just pay somebody to do it. One of those life lesson things, I guess. Been there done (a lot of) that too. But there is no doubt in my mind you will hold up your end of the bargain. Keep your chin up.
Glad the fix worked. I'm a used equipment guy myself, only smaller scale. Lawn and garden tractors. I love fixin them and working on them but I hate when I need them and they aren't willing to cooperate. Shhhhh don't tell anyone, I recently upgraded to brand new Green. Gotta repower the busted 345 for rototiller/snow blower/lawn cart work. Good luck, hope the fix stays. Thanks for your time and looking forward to seeing this field of green!
Man what a dream house with that huge shop and barely any houses around !!!! If he could put in a bass pond he would would really have something there!
I had a tool box like yours in my Avalanche, which leaked a bit. After cleaning the tools of rust, I put a handful of pill bottle descant packs in it, never rusted again. Now I collect them and use them everywhere. Ammo cans, tools, tool drawers, closets...
I must've read something like this years ago and have saved a lot of those descant packs, but I live in a dry climate so don't really need them. They come in everyone of my monthly prescriptions along with a little aluminum (?) dish and I save it all. Thought the little dishes might come in handy for something someday, too.
Another great video. Glad you solved the skid loader problem. I’m like you with buying used. And sometimes it may cost a bit to get fixed up but in the end you have learned how to work and diagnose the new machine. Great job
Looking like you are on the high side and moving forward ❤ it was a little more then a broken shovel handle 😅 sad to see it happen to you but you are not alone. 😇 thank you for sharing 😊
Well that is unfortunate about the joystick Sir. But you are correct about when you buy use equipment. I hope that was the only issue you find with your machine for some time. You take care of your equipment and it shows. Have fun in the pond. You earned a dip. Stay safe and keep moving forward.
Oh deere, you found the hole in your pocket having bought a Deere. If you really want a scare, go to C&C equipments youTube channel. They repair and sell on all sorts of equipment and Clinton is one of the nicest guys you could wish to meet. He deals in dozers and other stuff and when you hear how much Deere want from him for some parts, you'll be thankful it only cost you $1500. As always love what you do and indeed do it. Neil, sorry that you've had problems, hopefully repaired now. Can't wait for next episode, best of luck, from UK.
Boy, that skid loader sure got hit by the 'bad joojoo stick'!!!! Not sure if anyone else suggested it,(haven't had time to scan all the comments) but maybe give Tim a call over at Tractor Time With Tim. He's not too far from you and he seems to have a lot of connections that could be beneficial in finding a Harley Rake to borrow/ rent (reasonably). Those things are magical when it comes to lumpy dirt. Good Luck Neil & Happy Trails!
JD is a great machine, my son runs one every day doing septic work. They are really strong and as reliable as most other manufacturers. When I bought a new machine 4 years ago, there were 2 reasons that I didn't buy a JD, #1 I knew from talking to my son's boss how expensive they were for parts, and #2, that bleeping swinging door. You are correct about using a power rake on that yard, that's the best tool I have ever used for landscaping yards. I make a pass to clean the trash off the surface, and then I make 2 more passes to dress it up. I go north/south, east/west, then diagonal. That yard will be smooth as glass. I hate you had that issue, but I still believe you have a good machine. Thanks for sharing your trials and tribulations.
So my father passed away in April, and he had a Kubota, a small one, and he wasn't well and in his normal state of mind, and he left it sit outside even though, he could have made room in his shop. It cost over 6K to fix the 3 point among a bunch of other things. Those machines are expensive. Glad you got it fixed. So frustrating.
One thing about the DEF system, once you open a jug of DEF use it all and if you can’t don’t save it it will start to crystallize and if you put that into your tank later it can mess up your DEF system and that’s a costly expense as well!!
Amazing that one man being the producer, director, lead character, film crew, and editor can beat big name network programming. But it dawned on me why I watch channels like this and ditched network cable TV 15 years ago. This channel reminds me of pure 1950's - 80's Americana. No blue haired, tattooed, tackle box sportin' woke DEI land whales to be seen anywhere. When there's a segment about town folk in Harlan getting together to fix up the ball field it almost makes me want to stand up and recite the pledge of Allegiance. Rock solid fly over country right there baby!!!
hello little tip for your tools, in every plastic box with tools, i made a little hole, and put every little sica gel bags that I get in it. This Avoid humidity and therefore rust ;)
You can also soak parchment paper in 3in1 oil and place it over the tools before closing the tool box. My grandfather was a tool and die maker.... his tools look almost factory fresh!
Man oh man Neil, those skid loader issues had my blood pressure going up just watching! Problems like that make me mental! Hope your repair is the final fix. Great progress on that huge project. Look forward to the rest...
Neil I’m a rental equipment mechanic and with newer machines always keep contact cleaner for connections but I would say your joystick isn’t centering and whenever you put def in it buy a new jug save you a def header or two
I know he is just getting used to it but I cringed when he said that it was a second hand jug of def ....even if it is from your brother buy new and if it doesn't all fit throw it out don't save it !!!
Yea I’ve done a lot of def repairs from people using an old jug or even the cheap stuff that they keep in the back of their truck. Will throw it into limp and usually have to hook up with a laptop to reset but usually ruins the def header
I hope the 750 and the Bronco are on the list. That’s a lot of work. Maybe not all at once, but coming home to a nice lawn will put a smile on his and most importantly his wife’s face. 😊
Have your painter friend hold off on seeding until the fall….unless he’s got some way to water all that acreage! Simply get the finish grade done & seed & mat any sloped areas leaving the rest for cooler temps. They’ll have to keep after the weeds, though! Once they pop ( & they will! ) let them grow just a tad to give you some leaves…hit them with some herbicide in a tank sprayer to keep them at bay. Late August still might be too soon…September for sure will get that grass seed germinating nicely!
Quick tip, Dont try to plant until last week in Aug. It makes an incredible difference. a lawn rake for seed prep is paramount on multi acre project, a harley rake might help loosen the bed up first.
We call them Harley rakes. Spinning drum with hardened knobs. Gets the large rocks out and leaves a smooth, level surface behind. You have that nice tractor setup for final lawn prep.
On a small area you can keep the rake straight and they will roll the small debris along in forward or reverse. In something like Neil is working on he’d angle the rake and flail them off to the side of each progressive row. Use a bucket when you’re done or need to pick the row of rocks up. Sounds like Neil is trying to rent one and we’ll probably see it in action.
Neil check the sensor in under the seat..unplug it and make a pigtail and bypass it. Kubota same issue if your not sitting perfect in seat it doesn't read your in it.
Thanks Mike! I should have done a better job of showing my diagnostic efforts. I was so hopeful it was a seat switch or a door sensor or something simple. I checked everything I could but all signs kept pointing me to the spendy parts of course! Glad to see you in here. Hope you're doing well!
I just don't see Neil being the type to bypass safety devices. And, as it turned out, that apparently wasn't the issue. Once an owner starts doing those things, (jumping switches out) it never seems to stop and you end up with a jury-rigged machine that is even more troublesome. That's when guys like me buy them at pennies on the dollar and refurbish them.
Great content…some will be asking if it’s worth the trade…it’s definitely worth seeing a yard of that size get graded and levelled and the footage of you driving through the town to pick up the dirt…fantastic! Great episode!
How incredibly frustrating! Good on you for toughing it out and being patient with the machine and yourself. I cringed at 1500 too but still dark less than what you would have paid for a newer machine. But that is the DIY part of your channel…figure it out and do the install. Nice work on the property. It’s looking good!
Good morning Neil, Wow I agree with many of your comments in this one; “ shop envy “ , frustrating when you think someone may have sold you something that they knew had an issue, and the most applicable “ the story of my life” no time…. Hopefully this little barter you have going on works out as well for you as I know it will for him. Take care my friend.
Morning Neil! Been watching just haven’t been chatty. Love the videos and super happy for the success of your channel! Pond and landscape looks great! I sympathize with repairs like that. Something tells me you’ve been able to hold back serious frustration.
Neil, When you were greasing your machine. I thought about ours at work. We have a 324G. There is a grease zerk that is extremely hard to see right at the pivot by cab. You have to stand on a stool to even see it. Just wanted you to know about it.
Ow! That sudden stop that pretty much made you do an endo. That had to be a heck of a surprise and hurt hitting that lap bar. Glad to see you are ok. Fingers crossed that it's fixed.
I've been catching up on your videos. You had the blocked drain video a month ago, and put the metal snake down the drain looking for the blockage. A little hint I use, is to attach the cable locator to the snake, so you can follow it, you can even just use a length of fence wire down the pipe. My cable locator is a cheap one, it doesn't tell the depth. The only problem is, that if the wire crosses close another conductive cable, the signal can be running through both. I hope it helps in the future.
Another great video Neil. Im sorry to hear about your misfortune with the new to you, skid steer. Reach out to CMP attachments and see if they will lend you a hydro-bucket to do a demo/review on. God bless you my brother from another mother.
Good morning Neil, that's funny I use to haul mofits in there all the time for repaints. Awesome people in there. I bought a new fuel tank at j.d for my 1025 and your right they are extremely proud of their parts. Holy smokes $1k for a fuel tank.
Great video. Get some evapo rust and soak them all. Great video. On the farm all of our equipment is used so the first repair is always tough, but I look at it like me investing in my used equipment to keep it running correctly.
That's great you were able to work out a swap for paint and land work. Glad you got your skid loader fixed, but that's the life of any piece of equipment you use. Seems like all brand dealers are proud of their parts these days, it's getting totally out of hand but what can you do....
Boy, you're lucky Niel. Imagine if you had a bucket full of material lifted above your head when that thing locked up! You could have been injured AND trapped in the machine.
Use a King Kutter on a tractor PTO will do easy work with of that clay balls. Work smarter not harder. It can make powder out of crap dirt. Easy for planting anything.
It is unfortunate you had that problem with the skid steer, the big thing I have found is, get the issue repaired/ replaced, move on so it’s one less thing you have to deal with, makes life oh so much nicer. Sounds like you dealt with some stand up people and that has its rewards in the end. Drill a hole in that plastic tool case and throw some kind of descant in the box also, the box can’t breathe,( so to speak) and that causes condensation, we all know what condensation and metal do together. Thanks for the video, enjoyed watching and I felt the frustration with the skid steer.
You are always going to get people who think that they know better than others that can be true in certain circumstances but above all if you don’t try you will never know and without trying there is never going to be success every time you finish a little more a little bit better it’s all in aid of the bigger picture and the chance to live and learn and succeed in all things that you do props to you good luck in all your future endeavours be it ponds? Or anything who knows you could even try solar energy to heat the water and have tropical fish in your pond? Not saying you have to but the sky’s the limit to your imagination 👍😊👍
Loved the shout out to VVG, I don't watch a lot of channels on TH-cam but yours and Derek's are 2 of them and to hear a connection was cool. I assume you watch it too?❤
@@steveconrad9134 Correct - DEF is 67.5% deionized water and 32.5% urea. However, its shelf life is affected by fluctuating temperatures and exposure to direct sunlight and ambient air. Storage temperatures should not exceed 86°F or go lower than 12°F, tank caps should be closed tightly to avoid evaporation, re-ionization and crystallization. Since DI water has had all metals removed from it, it is commonly known as “hungry water” because of its tendency to attract minerals and metals from ambient air.
This was an awesome video, part of owning used equipment. Everyone sees the big hourly wage but doesn’t always think about a 1600$ simple joystick needing to be replaced.
Easy way to stop your tools from rusting is to throw some of those silica packets that come in shoes and what not. The moisture will go to the packet and not the metal. I have them everywhere.
I know the best way to clean that tool kit would be individually tool by tool. But just spray them all down with WD-40, then wipe them down as you need them. They’ll stay protected, and the WD-40 will do most of your cleaning as they sit in the tray waiting for you. Slightly messy, but ready to go. Thanks for your great videos. God bless you and your family.
Good day Neil, I welcome you to the John Deere high priced parts family.. lol Iam not a hater of Deere equipment, Deere equipment is good it’s the repair cost are staggering!!!! I’am retired from Deere, I’ve been involved in all aspects of manufacturing, so the best advice I can give you from years of experience, don’t buy used unless it comes with a warranty.. (As you found out), Buy new , use the equipment until the Deere warranty expires then sell /trade it In. In all my 64 years I have learned buying in the easy part maintaining the equipment is outrageously expensive. If it’s green / yellow it’s overpriced, Deere has a reputation and can price higher than most, Were taught this in marketing strategies, Anyway good luck and keep you checking account full Doug..
Many of my hand tools rust sitting in the garage with the humidity here in the Houston area. I soak them in Evaporust then spray a light oil on them after cleaning. The rust spots will look darker when done but rust will be gone.
Had the same identical problem with a Komatsu excavator. It was the pilot oil supply that was being interrupted. The pilot oil supply has a solenoid controlled valve and the solenoid was faulty. Komatsu wanted $1300 + for the part. Amazon had the part for $50. Ebay had the part from China, also $50. I ordered both as I was in a hurry. Problem fixed and two years later still works. It was somewhat difficult to diagnose because Solenoids are typically not intermittent when they fail. Good luck. (pilot oil operates everything hydraulic)
Don't know what the quote on the paint job is, but be careful not to end up with the short end of the stick. That dirt job seems to be increasing in size. Calculate what the value of every load of dirt moved, and hours on each piece of equipment.
I had a john deere skid steer 333g it is a weight seat sensor and just a little quick tip. Always run that machine on full throttle. That way, it doesn't clog your def filter
It's always frustrating when something doesn't work like it should. Then paying that kind of money for the joystick is just a punch in the gut, but at least it's working now. As for the rusty tools, I think I would have just poured oil in both sides to cover all the tools for about a week, then sent the kids out to scrub them. Use your resources! 🤣
It takes the right tool to do the job most efficiently. That's what my high school wood shop teacher taught me back in the 80's. That is a very nice machine and from what I see you are a very talented operator. Just smile and have a better day tomorrow. "That which does not kill us makes us stronger . " author unknown.
For any skid steer operators out there, is the joystick something that is a common problem? Given the cost, I’d be curious to take a broken one apart and see if there’s a way to rebuild them.
When in doubt buy a hand and foot control skid loader if you’re looking for a intro reliable skid steer with minimal electronics. Hope you continue to enjoy the John Deere skid steer hopefully you won’t have anymore trouble for a while.
No rush but I want to see the 318 you call old timer up and running soon. They are great machines and take little to get running after sitting for a long time.
At that price, I'll wager that there's a business in reconditioning those controllers. It's just circuits at the end of the day and circuit components themselves are cheap
I had to sell my JD 4440 because they wanted as much for a hydraulic as I paid for the entire machine, so I feel ya! With those old rusty tools, you can get a parts washer at Harbor Freight for a 150 bucks that'll take the rust clean off those old tools!
John seems like a good friend to have. It’s always cool when you and another person can mutually help each other.

I'll bet Wes would be impressed with your diagnosis and repair work. Another job well done!
Ha! I doubt that Wes is too impressed with my mechanic skills! 😁

+1 on Neil's desire to use a power rake aka harley rake, ruckus rake, etc It'd be helpful to wind row some of the debris in your top soil out too.

Good tip!
We call them Harley rakes.
Spinning drum with hardened knobs. Gets the large rocks out and leaves a smooth, level surface behind.
You have that nice tractor setup for final lawn prep.
@@dmwi1549 So where do the rocks go? Does the machine collect them?
On a small area you can keep the rake straight and they will roll the small debris along in forward or reverse.
In something like Neil is working on he’d angle the rake and flail them off to the side of each progressive row.
Use a bucket when you’re done or need to pick the row of rocks up.
Sounds like Neil is trying to rent one and we’ll probably see it in action.
A box take is a different tool that takes into the box.
Let’s see what he finds.
Neil check the sensor in under the seat..unplug it and make a pigtail and bypass it. Kubota same issue if your not sitting perfect in seat it doesn't read your in it.
Glad you figured it out! Now where's the tilt bucket 💪
Thanks Mike! I should have done a better job of showing my diagnostic efforts. I was so hopeful it was a seat switch or a door sensor or something simple. I checked everything I could but all signs kept pointing me to the spendy parts of course!
Glad to see you in here. Hope you're doing well!
That tilt is definitely at the top of my wishlist! One of these days!
Some machines try your patience . It's aggravating to say the least
Great job Neil!
Good morning Neil,
Wow I agree with many of your comments in this one; “ shop envy “ , frustrating when you think someone may have sold you something that they knew had an issue, and the most applicable “ the story of my life” no time…. Hopefully this little barter you have going on works out as well for you as I know it will for him. Take care my friend.
Thanks so much Mike! I hope it works out for both of us too!
Morning Neil! Been watching just haven’t been chatty. Love the videos and super happy for the success of your channel! Pond and landscape looks great!
I sympathize with repairs like that. Something tells me you’ve been able to hold back serious frustration.
Great to hear from you Troy! Thanks as always.
Neil, When you were greasing your machine. I thought about ours at work. We have a 324G. There is a grease zerk that is extremely hard to see right at the pivot by cab. You have to stand on a stool to even see it. Just wanted you to know about it.
A soil pulverizer works great on backfill dirt. It will loosen up the dirt and the rollers will break up the lumps. I have a 6 foot land pride.
I'll bet it is the safety switches.
Mine locks up when the door opens or safety bar is lifted.
Might have to override the safety stuff.
Joystick
Ow! That sudden stop that pretty much made you do an endo. That had to be a heck of a surprise and hurt hitting that lap bar. Glad to see you are ok. Fingers crossed that it's fixed.
Rough job to tackle when your equipment kills your time. But its lookin good and I'm enjoying this video. Well neighbor see you on the next one.
John Deere has been fighting the right to repair with the farmers over their equipment. I would sell that paper weight and get another machine.
Good morning Neil, that's funny I use to haul mofits in there all the time for repaints. Awesome people in there. I bought a new fuel tank at j.d for my 1025 and your right they are extremely proud of their parts. Holy smokes $1k for a fuel tank.
They have been great to work with!
Great video. Get some evapo rust and soak them all. Great video. On the farm all of our equipment is used so the first repair is always tough, but I look at it like me investing in my used equipment to keep it running correctly.
This was a cool video. Well thought out and planned.
Thanks!
That's great you were able to work out a swap for paint and land work. Glad you got your skid loader fixed, but that's the life of any piece of equipment you use. Seems like all brand dealers are proud of their parts these days, it's getting totally out of hand but what can you do....
You got that right!
LOL I thought VGG as soon as you said bleep bloop it. One of my favorite channels.
nice job and sure the party and you will be happy when there both completed
A grading job like that a Harley rack is the way to go. You can rent one, there amazing
I’ll take 94 any day during the summer. Was 117 in Arizona this past week. 100+ more days to go. Love the channel. Hate the heat.
Thank you for another great video. I hope you were able to fix your problem with John deer
While the machine was acting up the beeps would be covering my swearing
I’m with you can’t stand when equipment fails. Big job in front of you but got the right man for the job, you have a great work ethic.
Viring makes a 90” Harley rake I love mine !
There's nothing more frustrating than trying to get a job done without the proper tools or when your tools don't work!😵💫😵🥴
Congratulations on the fix. Another great video.
Man I enjoy your videos man.
Not saying you have to but the sky’s the limit to your imagination
👍😊👍
Loved the shout out to VVG, I don't watch a lot of channels on TH-cam but yours and Derek's are 2 of them and to hear a connection was cool. I assume you watch it too?❤
Great video as usual. Thanks from Montreal 🇨🇦✨👋🏼
Careful on the def fluid that you put in your machine! It is extremely hydroscopic, so only use fresh def fluid that you know the history of!
It’s 67.5% water to start with!
I very much enjoyed today's video. I hope your "fix" solves the joystick problem
We had a machine a couple years ago looks like it was very similar to yours it was doing the same thing ours turned out to be wheel speed sensors
Great tip!
Good day Neil,
I welcome you to the John
Deere high priced parts family.. lol
Iam not a hater of Deere equipment, Deere equipment is good it’s the repair cost are staggering!!!!
I’am retired from Deere, I’ve been involved in all aspects of manufacturing, so the best advice I can give you from years of experience, don’t buy used unless it comes with a warranty..
(As you found out),
Buy new , use the equipment until the Deere warranty expires then sell /trade it
In. In all my 64 years I have learned buying in the easy part maintaining the equipment is outrageously expensive. If it’s green / yellow it’s overpriced,
Deere has a reputation and can price higher than most,
Were taught this in marketing strategies,
Anyway good luck and keep you checking account full
Doug..
I'm keeping track. I'm not too worried about it yet cause I have plenty of things to paint! 😉
That extra $1000 was probably for the zip ties.
Yeah, no joke! 🤣
It takes the right tool to do the job most efficiently. That's what my high school wood shop teacher taught me back in the 80's. That is a very nice machine and from what I see you are a very talented operator. Just smile and have a better day tomorrow. "That which does not kill us makes us stronger . " author unknown.
Good practice and you get paintwork in return and another good contact & friend in the bargain. Win-Win-Win.
For any skid steer operators out there, is the joystick something that is a common problem?
Given the cost, I’d be curious to take a broken one apart and see if there’s a way to rebuild them.
It is a known issue to happen.
I am the same! I want to see ol timer get going!
Me too!
Good Morning Neil! Have a great start to your week.
Thanks, you too!
Fall seeding will be great for that yard.
Neil well hopefully 🤞 things are better on your skid steer 😮😊❤
Bleep-bloopin’….haha…VGG was the first thing that popped into my mind.
