Oliveto’s Emblematic Wolfish Theology

  • Karen Oliveto has been given the status of bishop in The United Methodist Church, even though, by the denomination’s standards, she is not eligible even for ordained ministry, much less the episcopacy. Since her ‘consecration’ as a bishop, she has revealed herself to be aligned against all forms of traditional Christianity, compromising the integrity of the UMC from within. Her continued standing in the denomination delegitimates among the episcopacy who continue to suffer the lawlessness of her administration. In this segment, I go through a recent piece she did and connect it some other work that I have done, as well as some previous reporting on her claiming to be a Muslim and railing against the ‘basket of deplorables’ culture found within some parts of the UMC. This isn’t meant to preach to the choir (although I’m sure many choir members will appreciate this) so much as educate those outside of the Western Jurisdiction who may not know very much about her.

I constantly hear clergy such as Bishop Oliveto proclaiming that what the world needs is for the oppressed to have justice. I can't recall any of them proclaiming that what the world needs is for those who are dead in their sins to have justification through Christ.

Thanks for helping us understand details impacting the crazy direction our church has taken. It’s is hard to leave all the relationships we’ve had for over 35 years but we’re not willing to jeopardize our salvation by conforming to UMC’s devilish new doctrine. God is in control and will provide direction for our faith journey.

It iccurred to me to wonder how much Oliveto's salary+benefits are compared to the people she's standing next to in Mexico? It seems like it would be better for her to exemplify equality instead of just pontificating about it.

Thank you, Jeff, for clearly pulling back the curtain on the wizard behind the rhetoric. I am a retired UM pastor now a senior Global Methodist pastor who longed for an exit ramp for the last decade but felt called to lead the particular church I served in the direction of their own exit from the UMC. So thankful for all who are leading the way in the GMC church.

I'm glad my efforts have been helpful and/or illuminating for folks. Oliveto is unfortunately just one of many voices that have intentionally worked to upend any notion of traditional biblical theology or practice. When one learns how to see this stuff, it can be found everywhere...

Jeffrey, I appreciate your stance here. You’re comments towards Oliveto is more than fair. But I think you don’t go near far enough (correction: you later did) in calling out this person’s false gospel. False religion she has brought into the UMC and corrupted the denomination. She may “act” very nice, but she’s leading people down the wrong path, away from Jesus. This needs to be made crystal clear.

Well now, the real problem is that Methodism disobeyed Paul's dictum "I do not allow a woman to have authority over a man" way back when and the cancer keeps spreading. And Karen has to go to an Aztec shrine!!! Karen needs to face the fact of sin as scripture calls it, not just social injustice. I rest my case.

I have never understood how Karen Oliveto could be a bishop over the conference I formerly was in, but tried to give her and the UMC the benefit of the doubt. After serving as a delegate to one of the Annual Conferences over which she presided , I can confirm she is indeed deceptively engaging. She seemed approachable and friendly and I was struck by her seemingly heartfelt prayers just before the disaffiliation votes. It is my understanding she is retiring in 2024. I pray for that to happen and for the Lord to intervene and put in place someone truly worthy.

Good teaching. Evil imitates good. Look to 1 John 4. Test every spirit. Oliveto is of the world and speaks of the world in this clip. She does not speak of the true Jesus, as she preached heresy by calling him a bigot. By scriptural standards, she is a false prophet.

I just preached on Romans 16:18, "For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive."
The word "smooth talk" deals specifically with putting on a front of "kind and gentle" speech, or going out of their way to be inoffensive. I could not help but think of the multitude of Stay UMC videos I've watched over the past year or so and people like this false bishop.

Many retired UMC ministers came into the ministry to avoid the draft during the Vietnam conflict and professed pacificism while their intention was to avoid the possibility of their death or personal destruction in the conflict. They came in not so much because they were called by God or they were committed to Biblical standards. Rather than be committed to Biblical exegesis, they would use eisogesis to support their often selfish motives. So, the came in with incomplete theology and they tended to carry their belief system through their ministry. It is not surprising that some of them hold to their original theology rather than letting the Bible or the UMC Discipline challenge their theology.

Let her (them) be. God has given her up to the desires of her heart. Them who separated from the UMC don't live there anymore. No need to intervene nor pay attention. The UMC will come to pass towards its self destruction. No need to intervene. When the angel of death was passing over Egypt, Moses, Aaron, their mother, who were enclosed in their house locked by the blood of lamb spread at their door had no need to come out crying for social justice as the angel of death indiscriminately killed 28:44 all first borns child young and old whether Egyptian or Hebrew who were not protected by the blood of the lamb. Whatever is happening now in the upcoming UMC gencon, God's own divine Agenda is now at work.

@@plainspokenpod I remember in the 70s when there was a turning from plain biblical teachings and a fear that Liberation Theology was seeping in. Back then, many believed, the UMC had adopted the “social gospel.” There remained good ministers and good lay people but the leadership was changing away from orthodoxy. Now I fear it is too little too late for rescuing (although God can do anything). If the UMC Leadership can tolerate this woman to begin with then they have given tacit approval for Scripture to be held in low view.

I think "We are all Muslim" is too emotional and too easy to misunderstand - including by Muslims. But I also think your critiscism of it wrongly focused on the literal meaning. I think of the story of the King of Denmark wearing a Star of David during WWII when Jews there were told to wear one in public. In a major way he was saying "I am a Jew". Oliveto's phrase, which we see used regarding various groups, turns this idea into didactic words by telling the world what "we" are. It's use was too quick and too easily tied to her politics. Not likely that it was a gesture focused on protecting people in her district.
