I like the backstory you gave Luthor although I think you could add another reason for Lex to hate Superman: Instead of just the basic stuff (he's jealous and sees the Man of Steel as potential threat) I would prefer something more close to "Birthright". Instead of hating Superman at first sight, Luthor could be initially interest in finally meeting an alien. As a man who loves science and discovery, he would always want to meet something from another world, someone who Luthor could see as an ally and understand him unlike his father or the people of Smallville (obs: besides his father's abuse, I think Luthor should grow very lonely and with no friends, except for Clark). But what happens when the two finally meet? Superman stops Luthor crime operations, takes the public attention from him and even calls Luthor out on his crimes, saying that "Luthor's control over the city is over" and that "for now on he will keep an eye on Luthor". All the expectations that Luthor had are gone and all left is jealousy and hate for Superman for make him feel small. with Lex seeking to just ruin Superman's life and make him feel alone and insignificant, just like he felt all his childhood. This would give a personal struggle for Superman, having to deal with the fact that someone he knew from his hometown became such corrupt CEO. Clark could even feel a bit guilty, wondering what he could have done back to prevent Lex from becoming this ruthless criminal.
Winslow Schott AKA the Toyman certainly needs to be fixed. He is a toymaker who makes weaponized toys, and he is a friend to all children. He should never be bastardized into a child murderer or worse, a child predator.
You're videos are super great! Truly! May i give a suggestion? Please, talk about aquaman, he is so powerful! He could stop global warming, he could destroy coast cities (where most of the population live) he could control all of seafood, he has an entire gang of scientists, soldiers, and Atlantis could be as powerful if not more than the U.S, and he is a lifetime monarc!!! Please, make him justice! Sometimes i imagine a comedy that aquaman makes a documentary, showing people how smart and powerful he in fact is LOL, maybe i should write it
Authors Anvil, that is… AMAZING! For another “compelling” version version of Lex Luthor (that DOES utilise his economic & political leverage you mentioned at 12:35) please watch “Superman/Batman: Public Enemies”. In that movie, Luthor is elected PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES! 🇺🇸 He takes advantage of a severe economic recession to get elected into the White House, secretly causing the stock market to crash to begin with. Luthor could have a loyal puppet (rather than any family) run his conglomerate company while he’s in office at the White House & another puppet run “Legion” as an Illuminati-type organisation. During Luthor’s presidency, the United States government would discover a Kryptonite asteroid heading towards Earth which would be gut enough to wipe out much of life on the planet, with maybe 6 months left before the impact. Luthor would be against Superman stopping the asteroid, not because he cares about his wellbeing, but because he wants to use nuclear missiles so that Luthor will get ALL the credit for stopping the asteroid & discredit Superman as a force for good. In that movie, President Luthor also works with Metallo to get Superman framed for murder, allowing America’s corrupt Commander-In-Chief to put a $1 billion bounty on the Man of Tomorrow (even distributing Kryptonite-based weaponry to people of the USA to catch him). When the missiles detonate prematurely, Luthor then goes to his backup plan; let the asteroid strike Earth to wipe out much of planet & exterminate most of human life on the “overpopulated” planet (especially those in poverty). In Luthor’s mind, this would be the most efficient way to take care of the population crisis & wipe of poverty at the same time. Superman would battle Luthor in his Kryptonite-based war suit, while the world turns towards anarchy as the asteroid inches closer to the planet. Luthor would attempt to use this to DESTROY Superman’s faith in humanity, claiming people show their true colours in a global disaster. After barely surving the battle, Superman would have a tearful goodbye & embrace with Lois Lane, before he (by his own choice) fly towards the asteroid & crash into it, sacrificing his own life in the process to save humanity, whom he deems worth saving. In the aftermath, Luthor is impeached & a funeral would be held in Superman’s honour in Metropolis, & Lois could write her own eulogy to Superman. It would end on a bittersweet note, with Superman being remembered as “The Man Who Saved The Planet”. WHAT DO YOU THINK?! 😊
We are currently in Season 3 of rewatching Smallville. The complexity of Lex's relationship with the Kent's is something I have found particularly compelling in the show - even though as an audience we generally know how things will turn out, I can't help but yearn for a better outcome and relationship every time Johnathan challenges Lex to be a better man.
awesome video, I agree with every point. Here's a bit of constructive criticism if you don't mind: the sound should be a little bit louder. I had to put the volume at max level for it to be coherent. Can't wait for the next one!
Lex for me is the main villain of dc. He leads the injustice league and legion of doom he also double crosses people like the joker and darkseid even times when he’s working with superman or the league he always finds away to stay on top. Also the reason why I think he is the lead villain is because I like him better than darkseid his is incredibly boring
Thank you, Jon. I really enjoyed this video, especially Lex's backstory, Lex's current activities, motivation, and his capabilities. I liked the fact that Lex's father made Lex who he is, teaching him to be hard and ruthless, and that Lex does what he does, including create inventions that benefit humanity, and constantly push himself to make himself better, because he desperately wants to be loved by the people of Metropolis because he was never able to win the love and respect of his father. Given this Lex Luthor's backstory and desire to be loved, it would make more sense for him to start out as an anti-villain who distrusts Superman because of Superman's great power, and then permanently become Superman's friend and potentially greatest ally. I disliked the climate change story idea because I am bored to death of climate change activists who claim that they know everything about the environment telling us that we should stop using fossil fuels, or gas-powered cars, or that we should switch to solar and wind. I would prefer a story about a different topic, like Second Amendment rights, meaning the right of the people to keep and bear arms. This story idea also ties in to Lex's idea that Superman constantly helping and saving people will make them dependent on Superman to live, which is similar to governments who seek to be tyrannical taking away people's guns to make the people weak and docile and compliant and dependent on the government to survive or even live so they can be more easily controlled. Here is my idea for an alternate story idea featuring your new-and-improved Lex Luthor: if Lex is a progressionist who wants people to be individually stronger and more independent instead of being complacent and docile, he should use his deep connections to buy or bribe politicians into repealing gun control laws that make buying guns more difficult for law-abiding citizens ("When guns are outlawed, only the Government will have guns. The Government - and a few outlaws. If that happens, you can count me among the outlaws." - Edward Abbey), laws that tell people what types of guns they can buy and what guns they cannot buy (including gun laws that limit clip or magazine capacities, gun laws that ban pistol grips, gun laws that ban suppressors, and gun laws that force people to register their guns to the ATF and the government), while still enforcing standard background checks (not universal background checks, which would require a national gun registration to enforce, which is always subsequently used to confiscate guns from the people, which would violate the Second Amendment: "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed"). Lex's next step should be to research firearm science, and then invent new rifles that are good for home defense, competition shooting, and war (a modular 5.56x45mm select-fire bullpup rifle with a 20" barrel, a 60-round magazine capacity, an adjustable stock, and an ambidextrous select-fire and paddle magazine release, and a modular select-fire 7.62x51mm bullpup rifle with a 24" barrel, a 40- or 60-round magazine capacity, an adjustable stock, and an ambidextrous select-fire and paddle magazine release, so not laser guns), and then have people who buy his new bullpup rifles trained in firearm safety and marksmanship. In this story, Lex distributing advanced firearms will have both positive effects and negative effects: criminals will be able to acquire Lex's guns to commit crimes, but law-abiding citizens will also be able to buy Lex's guns, but for competition shooting, and to protect themselves, and their homes, and their families and loved ones, from dangerous criminals and corrupt politicians. By the way, fun fact: Lex Luthor had red hair in his early appearances, until one illustrator confused Lex's bald henchman for Lex himself, which is the reason why Lex Luthor is frequently depicted as being bald. Lex Luthor also had red hair in Superman: The Man of Steel (1986) written and illustrated by John Byrne, and Superman For All Seasons written by Jeph Loeb and illustrated by Tim Sale. For a sympathetic, heroic Lex Luthor, I would recommend Action Comics #510-512. In this story, Lex becomes obsessed with a woman who Superman saves during one of their battles, he tracks her down, he finds out that her name is Angela Blake, he finds out that she is dying as the result of a terminal illness, he uses his brilliant mind to search for a cure for her illness, he finds a cure and cures her illness, Lex and Angela fall in love, Lex relinquishes his hatred for Superman and leaves his life of crime behind him and reform, then Lex uses his scientific genius for the betterment of mankind, including repairing the ozone layer and disarming the world of nuclear weapons, and Lex and Superman become best friends again, and Superman is even the best man at Lex and Angela's wedding. For a more terrifying, ruthless Lex Luthor, I would recommend reading Lex Luthor: The Unauthorized Biography (1989) written by James Hudnall. I would be happy to see more videos like this in the future, including more character analysis videos and "how to properly create and write" videos for other characters, including Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Winslow Schott AKA the Toyman, the Parasite, Darkseid, Mr. Mxyzptlk (mix-yez-pit-lick), Batman, Catwoman, the Penguin, the Riddler, the Scarecrow, Black Mask, Clayface (Basil Karlo), Killer Croc, Ra's al Ghul, Talia al Ghul, Lady Shiva, Deadshot, Deathstroke, Plastic Man, Aquaman, Mera, Black Manta, Ocean Master, Wonder Woman, Ares, the Cheetah, Billy Batson/Captain Marvel, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, Mr. Mind, Black Adam, Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, Star Sapphire, Sinestro, the Martian Manhunter, Captain America, the Red Skull, Baron Zemo, Taskmaster, the Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom, Bruce Banner/the Hulk, the Abomination, the Leader, Doctor Octopus, Mysterio, Dr. Curtis Connors/the Lizard, Norman Osborn/the Green Goblin, Kraven the Hunter, Michael Morbius, Eddie Brock/Venom, Cletus Kasady/Carnage, Thor Odinson, Lady Sif, the Warriors Three, Jane Foster, Loki, Amora the Enchantress, Malekith the Accursed, Doctor Strange, Baron Karl Mordo, Dormammu, Hank Pym/Ant-Man, Ultron, Iron Man, Black Panther, Thanos, Charles Xavier/Professor X, Magneto, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Dr. Henry McCoy/Beast, Wolverine, Sabretooth, Nathan Summers/Cable, Deadpool, the Punisher, the Ghost Rider, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Judge Dredd, Hellboy, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Shredder, Optimus Prime, and Megatron. I think character analysis videos and "how to create and write properly" videos for villains are the most interesting ideas because most villains are written and portrayed as flat, shallow, one-dimensional, purely evil enemies for the hero to defeat to make the hero look cool, instead of making the villains compelling characters in their own right. In short, I enjoyed this video because it explains how to make Lex Luthor not only a compelling antagonist for Superman, but also a compelling character on his own, which is exactly what I asked for.
If it wasn’t for the conservative bigotry - anti climate change concerns and pro firearm agenda - your comment would be perfect! However, I give you this: You are the first conservative that has shown an ounce of intelligence and eloquence that I ever seen online. And for that, I congratulate you.
@@marceloyoneshima I think Lex Luthor would benefit as a character by being pro-2A, because it might further tie into his belief that Superman constantly saving people will make the human race complacent and dependent on him to save them, and therefore weaker, so in response, he designs and develops advanced firearms and makes the manufacturing and distributing of these firearms legal so the people of Metropolis can have them so they will not need to constantly depend on Superman to save them. What do you think, Marcelo?
@@friedrodent112 I think it would be very much in character for Lex to do something like designing, developing, and distributing advanced super weapons to the general population in order to neutralize the power gap between civilians and superpowered beings like Superman. On other hand, Lex would most likely prefer to concentrate power on his own hands, rather than democratize it, since he views himself as pinnacle of humanity, the Übermensch as described by Nietzsche. So there is also that. (While Lex does see Superman as a catalyst for humanity’s complacency and dependency, he is not above positioning himself as humanity’s savior which probably makes his whole anti-superbeing rhetoric a bit hypocritical, and I say this as a fan of the character) Ultimately, I think there is a lot of potential in exploring the firearm dilemma and I would interested to see what would be both Lex’s and Superman’s stance in regards to it.
Although I profoundly agree that one of the greatest tragedies of characterizing Lex Luthor’s upbringing as one of a privileged boy is that you lose the self-made man narrative that would make him compelling mirror to Superman. - Lex as a man who had to build himself from the ground while Superman was handled his good looks, superpowers, and the admiration of the Metropolitans on a silver platter - and I do agree that the over lasting impact of the Smallville version of the overbearing, demanding and emotionally distant father trope, in the figure of Lionel Luthor - who like in the cases or Tywin Lannister, Rowan Pope, and Logan Roy contribute to amazing drama - is too good to be completely ignored, I feel that by combining both narratives - the self made man and the overbearing demanding father - you tried to eat your cake and have it too. Your background narrative contains too many holes. Is it realistic that a billionaire like Lionel Luthor would lose his entire fortune overnight? And due to gambling addiction? Or being screwed by some other billionaire like Morgan Edge? This is not how most fortunes work. It takes generations for billionaire families to destroy their legacies. Also, why would Lionel focus on preparing his son to become a ruthless businessman in order to regain the family’s fortune instead of himself working tirelessly- even sacrificing his time with Young Lex as it would be characteristic of him - to recover his fortune? Also, if he lost his fortune due to gambling or being overplayed by someone else, Lionel is no longer the magnificent bastard whose larger-than-life presence Lex always tries to live-up to as shown in Smallville and as shown with Tywin, Rowan, and Logan. Why would Young Lex even listen to a loser who lost his entire fortune overnight due to gambling or being overmatched by someone else? It makes no sense. Personally, I would rather take one version of the narrative - Lex being groomed to be a worthy successor of his father’s empire - over the other - Lex born out of poverty and having to rise to power with nothing else than his wits and his determination. And I have only one reason for it: Smallville Lex was forced by Lionel to become the man that he is. He was given philosophical literature - mainly Sun Tzu, Niccolo Machiavelli, and Friedrich Nietzsche - from very early age and that would inform his character in a more realistic way. Rich Kid Lex also makes him proficient in many areas beyond business acumen, since he now he can play piano like a orchestral member and play fencing like a professional fencer, all of which would be somewhat unrealistic if he was born poor. And if the price for that is to lose the self-made man narrative, so be it.
