Wow! I can’t believe that there is a few of us (for months of years to come and it eventually gets too much comments)
Ahh thanks! Glad you enjoy the content :)
In fact I adore your content, it’s so much nuance then most other writers in this platform! You give a very educational understanding writing in storytelling in any piece of media that really should not go under appreciated 👍
@@glencleland5849 Well if there are any topics you want me to explore just let me know! Next video is cooking but is taking a while because my wife and I accidentally bought a house lol
Great video, one small thing tho: In at least some versions of the story, there is no indication that he didn't get any help because of being from a impoverished background. In fact this was more the result of his father being a "respected" police officer who, even if Harvey's mother would muster up the courage to report him, would simply have his colleagues cover it up. Another thing I forgot to mention is that this of course sadly contributed to his later nihilistic breakdown as Two-Face, and having in general a very poor opinion of cops when he was still a prosecutor, having suffered first-hand the corrupt hypocrisy of the GCPD. I think this even went so far that, before he started working with him more closely to bring down the mafia, he initially dismissed Gordon as just another hypocrite that the corrupt brass would parade around before the media as a "hero cop". His father, while being no detective or high-hanked pencil pusher, was apparently a well-connected beat cop with lots of influence, who was celebrated by the public as a "hero"...while being at home a sadist beating his family for little to no provocation. In some twisted way he indeed ended up becoming something similar like his old man, just without hiding his dark impulses.
I don’t think superman, the one who thinks all life is precious, would be pro-abortion.
I wonder what the most severe and egregious character assassination in fiction is: Superman in the Snyderverse, Superman in The Dark Knight Strikes Again and All-Star Batman & Robin, Batman in All-Star Batman & Robin, Batman in The Dark Knight Rises, Batman in the Snyderverse, Batman in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Peter Parker in One More Day, Mary Jane Watson in One Moment In Time and Dan Slott and Zeb Wells' Spider-Man series, Eddie Brock in Spider-Man 3, Eddie Brock in the Sonyverse, Dr. Henry Pym/Ant-Man/Giant-Man in the Ultimate Universe, Iron Man in Civil War in the comics and the MCU, Iron Man in Secret Invasion, Bruce Banner in the MCU (Infinity War onward), Thor in the MCU (Endgame onward), Wanda Maximoff in WandaVision, Cyclops in the Fox X-Men films, James Bond in the Daniel Craig films, Optimus Prime in the Bayverse, Dexter Morgan in Season 7 onward, Rocky Balboa in the Creed trilogy, Han Solo in the Sequel Trilogy, Luke Skywalker in the Sequel Trilogy, Finn in The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, Daenerys Targaryen, Tyrion Lannister, Jamie Lannister, Joel Miller in The Last of Us: Part II, or Indiana Jones in The Dial of Destiny.
The recent Arkham Shadow game solidifies this statement.
I've frequently noticed this trope, and it likely originates in fanfiction. Fan-made stories tend to assassinate and undermine existing characters, often to elevate the author's preferred character or an original one. I find it frustrating, especially now that I see it in professionally made stories. Every character is vital and none should be written poorly to prop up another.
Good take.
When I think of character assassinations I think of Spider-man. The damage Marvel writers have done to Peter Parker is just shameful. As far as the Zuko heel turn, you need to understand that there is still a small part of Zuko that wants the approval and love of his dad. Despite everything Azula has done there is a small part of him that still wants to make his dad proud and the point of his heel turn was that he still needed to sort himself out. The beach episode was made to finally force Zuko to confront his problems and it leads to him finally joining Team Avatar Was the idea executed well? Perhaps not but the intention was good. I would probably call it a slight writing misfire but not completely bad. I can understand why you would dislike it but keep.mind not everyone takes writing as seriously as you. That does not make them ignorant.
Thanks for the comment, in response to what you've said: So I absolutely understand that there is still a small part of him that wants his father's approval, however I would argue that by the end of Book 2 it is just that: a small part of him. Every other part of him, however, was firmly put on this redemptive arc as shown by his actions with freeing Appa, going on that date with the Ba Sing Se chick, having that heart-to-heart with Katara in the cave, and also fighting alongside team Avatar previously in the season to take down Azula. I think my two biggest gripes with his heel turn is firstly his complete betrayal of Uncle Iroh - the man who by all accounts has replaced his Father figure and who has shown him nothing but love and hope. The second being that the person who got him to betray everyone was Azula - the person in his life who he hates the most and has lied to him repeatedly throughout the season. These gripes could've been fixed or at least made a lot better if maybe Zuko was tricked into betraying Iroh by anyone other than Azula. Or perhaps Azula could've hypnotized him using the Ba Sing Se conditioning shenanigans? Regardless, thanks again for the view and comment!
ITS SUPIN' TIME
The radioactive goo then got into the sewer and landed on 4 adolescent turtles and a Weeb rat that was super into Ninjas
This was excellent! Very insightful!
Harvey Kent should have had his own movie, done in the style of Joker. Bruce Wayne could be his childhood friend who as an adult shares his goal of ridding Gotham of the Maroni crime family
0:45 Superman vs The Elite is a great example of a great Superman story. It is one of my top three or so, probably my very favorite not written by Alan Moore.
i wanna watch this video but im paranoid and have to ask if there are any spoilers in this video for dd season 3 i should know about first
It is 10 October 2024 and I just discovered your channel. Subscribed 🧿🧿
my number one fave show and you summed it up beautifully :)
Thanks! Hoping to do more Buffy content in the future!
Great !!
Great analysis!
Daredevil and silver surfer will always be my favorite heroes. The conflict inside of them and moral battles makes them much more interesting. The idea that they serve a higher power bur still are their own characters while also being badass is exactly why i love them.
What if I told you 70s-90s Joker AND Two-Face share the gold medal far as I am concerned ?
This was a great video
I hope you see this. Your content is superb. Its well thought out with interesting subject matter, well written and so much research is put in. Stick to it. Your videos will pop off and subscriber count will increase. Much thanks
I have indeed seen this! Thank you for your kind words, glad you enjoy my (very) small corner of YT :)
I’m a devout Catholic, and one time while studying my religion I came across a story about gargoyles. Gargoyles are interesting, because why would the Catholic church use demonic-looking figures to decorate their places of worship. I found the reason was to ward off demons. The demons would look at the gargoyles as mirrors, or reminders of their appearance, which would remind them of their eternal damnation, thus cause them so much pain and anguish that they would flee, not being able to bear their reality. I believe Daredevil dresses as a devil for the same reason. He makes himself appear as a demon to scare demons(criminals).
What these stories need to do is take what Star Wars under George Lucas did and after the Prequels were made, make stuff like The Clone Wars, the Comic Books and Graphic Novels, let people make adaptations of their Superheroes. Just chill out and relax in between the big fights, not everything needs to be this great big important life or death moment in a person's life, sometimes some people just gotta shovel snow off of their car after fighting a Snow Themed villain with their family and friends. Sometimes, after a major city has been attacked, heroes just want to go back and check in with the people who were hurt in the aftermath. Sometimes, it doesn't even have to be all about the big major superheroes. Sometimes, little people can have stories to tell and have a right to have them told the same as the heavy hitters and recognizable names. People don't like superhero stories because of any formula or because they appeal to a wide audience or some other superficial aspect, or at least, those aren't the people who stick around and keep paying your bills the most and let you have your rich cars and fancy get-aways for the rich CEOs and for the working class folk who are busting their butts off just trying to keep bread on the table. The thing that gets in the money are the stories that were made and the fact we get to see the characters on screen do things on screen that we came to see. We came to see Tony Stark be the anti weapons dealer, smart-ass cynic with a heart of gold (well, technically Vibramium, but details). We came to see the Guardians of the Galaxy BE the Guardians of the Galaxy James Gunn made us respect. We came to see Scott Lang be committing heists as Ant-Man and have silly, funny banter with the rest of the cast. Hell, I even liked the funny 3 guys be the Funny 3 Guys. We came to see Captain America and his platonic bro relationship with Bucky, we came to see Bruce Banner and Hulk be the Bruce Banner and Hulk we wanted to see, the ones that we were told we were GOING to see. And sometimes, when you've seen these characters at their most tense moments, you kind of want to unwind with something that isn't so tense and serious. Sometimes, you just want to calm down with some down to Earth things mixed with a Superhero filter layered over it. Now, if Marvel had done everything perfectly and not done everything they did, particularly at the deadlines and Budget Cuts of the House of Mouse and their greediest leaders, we wouldn't be having Super Hero fatigue, but we do, and now Marvel is going to have to pay the price for every single failure they've ever committed. Not even Robbie Downie Jr is enough to get me on the same boat with this new phase, not unless core company policies and franchise redirections are taken will I personally come back to the mainstream stuff and instead I'll stick to the fanworks I know and trust.
Agreed. I miss those little moments when the hero has to deal with real life, such as his girlfriend dying from an incurable disease and the irony is that even with his super science, it could kill her and make it worse. The key is to avoid melodrama, and just make drama, but always the key is balance and character moments. Its the person in the suit that makes them super. Not the powers, its character. My rule is character is key!
Round of applause my good man 👏👏👏👏
Marvel had two massive flops out of 30+ movies and that now means that super hero movies barely make a profit? 😂😂😂 Trash blockbusters are barely making a profit, its not just super hero movies and it's not really Marvel outside of Quantumania and the Marvels.
Paste Pot Pete is Marvel's most adhesive character.
i hated daredevil as a kid and found him boring, as an adult i love him for exactly the same reasons i didn't like him: he's comic's most mature, well written character, as opposed to spider-man whos is marvel's most shallow character once you grow up and realise what hes for.
man I love your videos
Great video man I will definitely watch more and you earned a subscriber out of me
Great video. Nothing but love for Matt, but Scott Summers.
I think saying Daredevil is lesser talked about is a stretch bro is borderline A tier in terms of popularity, promption, sales and importance 😭
Sad this flopped man hope you get the recognition you deserve
Thanks, I think I need to do a better thumbnail to be honest...
Im super happy with the Nolan trilogy, but this cohesion video has me thinking about how interesting it would have been to see Joseph Gordon Levitt carry on the series as his full time job was already a police officer. To see the conflict and internal struggles between the justice he serves as a police officer and as (Nightwing/Robin) while having his orphanage background could make for a similar cohesion to Dare Devils.
Well presented, I agree with your points 100%, I believe that The Punisher, another of my favorite characters is also very cohesive as well. I would love you to do a video on him as well.
Pretty late, but I think My Adventures with Superman bas a pretty good Lex.
The problem with Buffy is that ALL the girls are “girlie” girls - except for Faith, who is evil, and even she is “sexy, bad girl” girlie. There are girls and women who have different aesthetic tastes that are just as valid. That said, I loved the show and have watched every episode.
Yes, I would agree with you - there are non-girlie girls but they are unfortunately side characters. I think Angel (the TV show) did this a lot better where Kate and Fred, thanks for the comment :)
I like it sounds perfect but there is one thing lex luthor is a scientist and would like to kill superman so he can use his dna to get richer like curing illnesses and advancing the human race.
OBJECTION! You failed to mention that he always looks cool as fuck.
I’ve been on a Superman kick. I’m 45 and haven’t been into superheroes since I was in early high school. I’ve been exhausted with humanity for about 8ish years now. During my Superman binge, I found your essay on Superman and started watching some of your other videos. Great stuff. I’m surprised you’re not more popular. When I write my book, I’m going to have to credit you for helping.
That is incredibly kind of you to say, glad I could be of assistance! Good luck with your book, look forward to reading it someday :)
This video was great, one more point of cohesion for his character is that his super-hearing allows him to sometimes hear the under-their-breath prayers of victims or their screams to God in final moments. And so he considers his affliction a gift from God so that he may carry out his will on Earth. In that he can answer their prayers immediately with direct action. This is kind of similar to "with great power comes great responsibility" but elevated to "with a powers from God you must carry out his will", so while Spider-Man feels he must fight crime because "it's the right thing to do" Daredevil must never quit because it is a command from heaven.

The tittle is a fucking lie.
How tf you gonna claim something like this while also saying that you haven't involved yourself in a lot of Daredevil's stories? LOL I ain't watching this nonsense
I think magneto deserves a tie here in terms of cohesion
Bro you need to increase the volume of your audio. I'm listening with headphones and can barely hear you (as I'm hearing impaired)
Captain America connected with his setting America at first😂
We really out here reading religious superhero books fuck me
