I feel very strongly about her response that the cat looked fine. My mum was in an abusive relationship for nearly 15 years and nearly always "looked fine". Is Rachel condoning this "type" of abuse as long as someone "looks fine"??
Yep. I grew up in a very abusive household. Never once had a bruise from being punched in the face. I LOOKED fine so people ignored the abuse I was going through.
I don't think she is condoning it, I can understand where she is coming from, she just didn't articulate it well - I have a friend who made a stupid mistake when he was 18, got a criminal record and now 20 years later after training to be a teacher, he still fails checks and so finds it extremely difficult to get a job. His whole life is effected from this mistake. Point being, even though he did not treat the animal with compassion, if we react in the same way to him (using zero compassion) - take away his career and then he ends up depressed and commits suicide or something, are we really any better? It is a very nuanced issue and I think the ideal solution would be to make him earn redemption, maybe by helping in an animal home for a long time alongside his job. Or a meaningful punishment, but one which does not just destroy his only career path.
Emotional intelligence is very underrated in our society unfortunately. It's all IQ here IQ there while people with high IQs can be jerks just like everyone else. Jobs that require empathy like nurses are often paid less although they're some of the most important.
Well, didn't he imply that if you mistreat an animal you should get fired from your job? No law states that any crime has the punishment of losing ones job, that's a good thing. He should of course be charged for the crime he committed though. I'm a bit confused, he didn't get charged, but he got fined? Isn't the fine then the punishment for the crime..?
Drudley, when you have an much as this Dickhead a fine means absolutely nothing to you. He tried to say that the law should be held up no matter the status of the individual and the law shouldn’t contradict itself where it’s an exception for one or the other.
@@TDrudley Getting a fine does not necessarily mean you've been charged for a crime. And I don't really know how the law works over there, but in Sweden job contracts usually states that they have the right and probably will fire an employee who makes them guilty of a crime. (Sorry if my English is bad.)
@@TDrudley no, he didn't. But he pointed out that he should be tried in a court of law, something that hasn't currently happened. If it did, a criminal conviction could lead to a prison sentence, which, would obviously impact his career. As would a prison sentence impact someone that, in her example, worked in McDonald's.

"One misguided kick"???? A person doesn't simply kick or smack a cat once just because of the lols. It's something that they are comfortable doing, which suggests that they have done it pretty often. It just happens that this time it was recorded and shared on the Internet. It didn't mean it's a solitary occurrence.
At around 9 minutes Rachel Johnson thought she'd got a slam dunk against Ed and was completely blindsided by his excellent question. She didn't like it when the shoe was one the other foot and she suddenly stopped being so smug. Nice one Ed for being so calm and level headed.
@@sebfox2194 being prosecuted for a crime isn't canceling somones career though, they simply can't be a part of the career anymore because they're serving the punishment. I think people (especially media and online) need to stop referring to it as cancel culture straight away.

What Kurt did is unacceptable and should be punished! You see very clearly it’s normal behavior for him to slap a cat around. It was not “one silly mistake”, dear Rachel. And Rachel (I’m very shocked about some of your arguments - they seem like a little bit (VERY) oldschool): what people do in their private life should have CONSEQUENCES in all areas! What about: “Oh, I abused my child only in my private life and I slapped my wife only at home! And I murdered a neighbor’s child in my living room.” MOST abusive cases take place behind closed doors in private life! They have to take the consequences and apologize and should go through a psychotherapy program to ensure they don’t repeat their behavior! In this case from my point of view: Kurt Should Not represent any Team in Public. This is not a role model as a sportsman! He has clear tendencies of aggression and should be banned from fair game. A real sportsman has also discipline and ethic rules at home - not only when he’s playing on a field. I hate it when people talk down abuse and do as if it wasn’t that bad. “I only abused a bit. I only raped a bit. It wasn’t that bad. The victim should be fiiiiiine.” Come on, in which world are we living? Abuse is Abuse! Take the consequences!!!
I think he should be allowed to come back after he did all the things you mentioned. Cancel culture is able to cause more pain to the cancelled person than the person ever caused. The goal should be rehabilitation and education. The best prisons in the world with the lowest relapse rate are the ones which focus on rehabilitation over punishment.
Where is your compassion? What he did was horrible and wrong, but the focus should be on allowing him (and others) to understand the severity of his actions and change. Not to take revenge and take away what is clearly his only career path and passion in life - by doing that you are putting him through years and years of pain, and i imagine that won't even help, possibly make things worse, as he will forever hate animal activists like yourself.
So I think everyone would benefit from reviewing the ethical theories that govern the laws we find ourselves subject to anywhere we live. In general, there are 3 types of ethical theories, according to Brown University of Providence, Rhode Island, USA: 1) Consequentialist theories The consequence or outcome of an action acts as the basis for judgement and punishment 2) Non-consequentialist theories The intent from which the action arises acts as the basis for the judgement and punishment 3) Agent-based theories The moral status of an individual, as defined as the integrated sum of one's moral or immoral actions committed *over time* ( _not of a single action_ ), acts as the basis for the judgement and punishment It would appear that Ed's interviewer converses while holding more agent-based theories, meaning that the French football player should not be punished as severely because there is a high probability that the player hasn't committed as many immoral actions like this one as compared to the moral ones. (I should note that we cannot know the probability of the football player's moral status just by looking at a single piece of evidence: it seems like Ed's interviewer is jumping this uncertainty gap and assuming so anyways.) Ed seems to be conversing with more consequentialist theories, meaning that regardless of how an action came to be, the receiver of the offense (i.e. the cat) still underwent an impulse and later moments of suffering. If we were to harmonize these two theory types, then it could very well be the case that: 1) The football player historically might never have shown such levels of physical suffering on other animals close to him as he did in the video 2) The cat historically might never have induced the level of suffering communicated in the video If the event truly was highly infrequent: once in a lifetime, then I suppose we can weigh the judgement and punishment directed towards the player differently than if these events were more frequent or if the suffering of said events took on greater levels of harm. But that's highly improbable too, of course. Just thought I'd offer this information for others trying to formulate their opinions.
Did she really just say “his silly brother posted the video” “it was clearly a mistake”. I’m just curious if a person was getting abused would she call that a mistake too? How can you kick a cat repeatedly by mistake? His brother was silly, not for recording the video, but for allowing the abuse to happen.

I'm glad you got the chance to ask a question back at her because she seemed to want to wrap up the interview once she felt confident she could clearly put the right words in your mouth. You weren't saying yes or no to the question of whether he should be cancelled, but she kinda just tried to squeeze it out of you and once she got something close to that she was content to end there. Thanks so much for pointing out the hypocrisy here! It's tricky because I'm sure she would have agreed about the severity of the act if instead of a cat, it was a human child or baby, but that's crossing into a whole new territory where people then try to say we care about animals more than humans and they get defensive and are afraid to see the similarities between human and non-human animals. Also, surprisingly, there are some people who actually look the other way if someone kicks or slaps their child in the privacy of their own home. I hope her listeners heard the point you were making and not the one she desperately wanted you to make.
Great conversation especially towards the end. It was "funny" how she put the words "so Ed says he should be cancelled and loose his job" in your mouth, even though you never said that! He should go to court for starters, like anyone who does anything like this, at home or not, should.

i like to order in a restraunt a steak medium raw to get the taste of blood, i usually order two steaks and i try to have one made from (baby cow) and the other steak would be its mother, it's really unlikely but i keep hoping, after i eat the steaks i use leftover blood to cover potatoes and salad so I can enjoy the vegetables to taste like blood 😋🥩

This is where an appeal to law is valid and effective. Laws protecting domestic animals are justified and rational. And those laws should extend to protect “farm” animals. This may be the straightest path to our goal.
Until you legally establish the sentience of animals, you'll only see the same useless welfarist laws with loopholes and no oversight that just keep the operations going. And until then, the animals that humans financially exploit, like on farms and research labs, will never have any such protective laws. The money made by humans is deemed more important than an animal's suffering.
@@harveyplantharvester1502 The use of the term 'suffering' in law already implies sentience. Experience requires sentience. The Animal Welfare Act 2006 contains provisions against 'unnecessary suffering', and I believe it would apply to farm animals too, were there not separate acts for farming, which take priority. My point is that although I agree with the sentiment, I'm not sure what you're saying is true exactly, because it seems to me like it's already legally established that vertebrates (and a few others) are sentient. Interestingly, 'duty of care' requiring the basic needs of animals to be met, was law for farm animals long before it was law for pets. I think the Animal Welfare Act 2006 is very good and quite comprehensive. We just need to put an end the false idea that animal agriculture is necessary and worthy of its own protections.

I remember there being a woman who worked for a bank who randomly picked up a cat and put him/her in a bin, she lost her job. Just because he is a footballer doesn't mean he deserves leniency when it comes to animal abuse, I guarantee no one was saying that woman losing her job was too much and she was being cancelled for putting a cat in a bin.
Because nobody likes people working in banks as much as they like footballers, so there's a double standard.. some just want Zouma to keep playing football and don't want their entertainment to suffer.. He shouldn't get away with what he's done just because he's a football player

Well done Son. You did really well. I just wanted to point out, that when she said that the cat didn't look any worse for wear, she's missing the point. She's underestimating animal psychology and emotions. Perhaps she should look into all the latest information available on it. The cat could very well be living in fear with this kind of behaviour. Living in the fight or flight response is terrible for the mind and the body, and there's enough evidence that non-human mammals can live in this state. The other areas to consider are as you will know, that most complaints about animal cruelty are not even investigated by the Police. When charges are brought, then most of the charged are not brought to trial by the prosecutor fiscal, and on the off chance that they are, they're usually admonished for good behaviour or receive a temporary ban that can't be enforced. If he's doing that when he's on video, then what could he be doing for a joke when he's not on video?
Right. The cat and many animals may have high levels of flight or fight to deal with without this kind of bullshit put on top. I know my cat was never the same after a traumatic event and practicly flinched at everything.

Rachel's final "argument" reminds me of those people who sue you for performing CPR on them in a lifesaving situaion because you bruised a rib in the process. Apparently this can happen in the U.S.
It's possible to sue but you almost certainly wouldn't be successful even if the ribs were broken. You definitely wouldn't be if they were only bruised.

Exactly. I don't know much about law, but I do know that when precedents are set it can be hard to undo in the future, and the same goes for cultural standards we set, right now we might think mob justice is a good idea because it benefits us or our case (as long as you're on the far left), but this all depends on the sociopolitical climate, what if a wave of anti-veganism kicks in and you're in next for feeding your cat plants?
Thats actually the fault of US medical systems. If you have an insurance and go to the hospital with a broken rib the insurance company, in order to not pay the hospital fees, will sue the "assailant", ie the person who broke your ribs.

Yes, the problem is the eyes that see's, what will the police's take be on this, what's the laws' take on this, and what will be the jury's take on this. Feeding your cat vegan food might be perfectly healthy for them considering it has supplemented taurine etc, but will the law agree or will it deem you an animal abuser next? That's the problem with politics, you create laws and attitudes in people on day that will benefit good people, that will in the next moment be used against good people, so you've always gotta think a little ahead and not just at the immediate benefits to you or your cause when it can have a huge backslash on you later on if i.e. the political mood changes.
In contrast to how much we denigrate the emotional intelligence of non-human animals, cats and other animals alike can create trust barriers, develop paranoia and PTSD-much like humans do when life events stimulate such phenomena. People forget the mentality it takes to have complete disregard for not just another individual, but an individual much smaller than he and one that had done nothing to him, to then proceed to do such things. And we brush it off as 'a mistake,' but what would have happened if the kick was 50% harder, breaking bones and rupturing vital organs? Or if the cat was older or unknowingly pregnant (if female and not spayed). Death and serious injury and complication: what would the response be then? And if it's different-why? If you don't want to risk losing your career or face backlash, have some humility and show some basic kindness before you abuse other individuals, regardless of their species; they're here with us, not for us.
@@Collabcreatemarketing Morally, it's a moot point if one were to eat the cat afterwards-the cat would be dead; in essence, suffering would have lead to death, and thus suffering ended. The reason it's irrelevant though, is that the ethical dilemma is harming the cat in the first place and taking away their autonomy to decide what happens to their own bodies. Which, in collective agreement, we all know the cat would lean preferably to not suffering; in this case being kicked or slapped (which sounds more light-hearted than it actually appeared). Finding reason to kill an individual doesn't make the act of taking an individual's life any more moral. In some circumstance, it may be justified (say you lived in a deserted tundra or in a developed nation and had little to no choice in your food options). But there's admittedly a large difference to truly needing to kill to survive, and killing because you wonder what cat tastes like. This is an individual's life in question, and I'd bet that if you're able to leave a comment here on TH-cam, you most likely have the option not to seek out such curiosity.

A footballer is an entertainer in the end, and how the public feels about them is a response to their behaviour. No one individually can decide how unpopular someone will become when ugly actions are exposed, and how much that will effect their career as a public figure. I can't imagine anyone better than Ed to deliver the view I believe in. His approach was friendly but precise. I felt that Rachel was stubborn but the best thing that Ed has done is darted some views which will be reflected upon away from this interview. I don't believe we should be hard on Rachel.

Completely agree that it's logical to argue that Zouma should be accountable for his actions, prosecuted under animal cruelty laws, and punished by a judge. But given the fact that the "animal-loving" British public calling for his head supports the industrial cruelty inflicted on billions of other animals, I'm inclined to think that Zouma should be given a break. Why should Zouma be held to higher ethical standards than Joe Bloggs?
Just a thought: teachers in the UK, and certainly in some other countries too, get cancelled very easily, if they do something in their private life that is deemed to damage school reputation. They do lose their jobs, sometimes over minor things. Why not a footballer?

I don't think she is condoning it, I can understand where she is coming from, she just didn't articulate it well - I have a friend who made a stupid mistake when he was 18, got a criminal record and now 20 years later after training to be a teacher, he still fails checks and so finds it extremely difficult to get a job. His whole life is effected from this mistake.
Point being, even though he did not treat the animal with compassion, if we react in the same way to him (using zero compassion) - take away his career and then he ends up depressed and commits suicide or something, are we really any better?
It is a very nuanced issue and I think the ideal solution would be to make him earn redemption, maybe by helping in an animal home for a long time alongside his job. Or a meaningful punishment, but one which does not just destroy his only career path.
Ed’s gifted with empathy intelligence and a sharp mind. Animals around the world are thankful to have you as their friend.
Emotional intelligence is very underrated in our society unfortunately. It's all IQ here IQ there while people with high IQs can be jerks just like everyone else. Jobs that require empathy like nurses are often paid less although they're some of the most important.

Well, didn't he imply that if you mistreat an animal you should get fired from your job? No law states that any crime has the punishment of losing ones job, that's a good thing. He tried to say that the law should be held up no matter the status of the individual and the law shouldn’t contradict itself where it’s an exception for one or the other.

And I don't really know how the law works over there, but in Sweden job contracts usually states that they have the right and probably will fire an employee who makes them guilty of a crime. (Sorry if my English is bad.)

If it did, a criminal conviction could lead to a prison sentence, which, would obviously impact his career. As would a prison sentence impact someone that, in her example, worked in McDonald's.

What about: “Oh, I abused my child only in my private life and I slapped my wife only at home! I think he should be allowed to come back after he did all the things you mentioned. Cancel culture is able to cause more pain to the cancelled person than the person ever caused. The goal should be rehabilitation and education. The best prisons in the world with the lowest relapse rate are the ones which focus on rehabilitation over punishment.
Where is your compassion? What he did was horrible and wrong, but the focus should be on allowing him (and others) to understand the severity of his actions and change. Not to take revenge and take away what is clearly his only career path and passion in life - by doing that you are putting him through years and years of pain, and i imagine that won't even help, possibly make things worse, as he will forever hate animal activists like yourself.

So I think everyone would benefit from reviewing the ethical theories that govern the laws we find ourselves subject to anywhere we live.
In general, there are 3 types of ethical theories, according to Brown University of Providence, Rhode Island, USA:
1) Consequentialist theories
The consequence or outcome of an action acts as the basis for judgement and punishment
2) Non-consequentialist theories
The intent from which the action arises acts as the basis for the judgement and punishment
3) Agent-based theories
The moral status of an individual, as defined as the integrated sum of one's moral or immoral actions committed *over time* ( _not of a single action_ ), acts as the basis for the judgement and punishment
It would appear that Ed's interviewer converses while holding more agent-based theories, meaning that the French football player should not be punished as severely because there is a high probability that the player hasn't committed as many immoral actions like this one as compared to the moral ones. (I should note that we cannot know the probability of the football player's moral status just by looking at a single piece of evidence: it seems like Ed's interviewer is jumping this uncertainty gap and assuming so anyways.)
Ed seems to be conversing with more consequentialist theories, meaning that regardless of how an action came to be, the receiver of the offense (i.e. the cat) still underwent an impulse and later moments of suffering.
If we were to harmonize these two theory types, then it could very well be the case that:
1) The football player historically might never have shown such levels of physical suffering on other animals close to him as he did in the video
2) The cat historically might never have induced the level of suffering communicated in the video
If the event truly was highly infrequent: once in a lifetime, then I suppose we can weigh the judgement and punishment directed towards the player differently than if these events were more frequent or if the suffering of said events took on greater levels of harm.
But that's highly improbable too, of course.
Just thought I'd offer this information for others trying to formulate their opinions.
Did she really just say “his silly brother posted the video” “it was clearly a mistake”. I’m just curious if a person was getting abused would she call that a mistake too? How can you kick a cat repeatedly by mistake? His brother was silly, not for recording the video, but for allowing the abuse to happen.

You weren't saying yes or no to the question of whether he should be cancelled, but she kinda just tried to squeeze it out of you and once she got something close to that she was content to end there. Thanks so much for pointing out the hypocrisy here! It's tricky because I'm sure she would have agreed about the severity of the act if instead of a cat, it was a human child or baby, but that's crossing into a whole new territory where people then try to say we care about animals more than humans and they get defensive and are afraid to see the similarities between human and non-human animals. Also, surprisingly, there are some people who actually look the other way if someone kicks or slaps their child in the privacy of their own home. I hope her listeners heard the point you were making and not the one she desperately wanted you to make.

This is where an appeal to law is valid and effective. Laws protecting domestic animals are justified and rational. And those laws should extend to protect “farm” animals. This may be the straightest path to our goal.
Until you legally establish the sentience of animals, you'll only see the same useless welfarist laws with loopholes and no oversight that just keep the operations going. And until then, the animals that humans financially exploit, like on farms and research labs, will never have any such protective laws. The money made by humans is deemed more important than an animal's suffering.

The Animal Welfare Act 2006 contains provisions against 'unnecessary suffering', and I believe it would apply to farm animals too, were there not separate acts for farming, which take priority. My point is that although I agree with the sentiment, I'm not sure what you're saying is true exactly, because it seems to me like it's already legally established that vertebrates (and a few others) are sentient.
Interestingly, 'duty of care' requiring the basic needs of animals to be met, was law for farm animals long before it was law for pets. I think the Animal Welfare Act 2006 is very good and quite comprehensive. We just need to put an end the false idea that animal agriculture is necessary and worthy of its own protections.

I remember there being a woman who worked for a bank who randomly picked up a cat and put him/her in a bin, she lost her job. Just because he is a footballer doesn't mean he deserves leniency when it comes to animal abuse, I guarantee no one was saying that woman losing her job was too much and she was being cancelled for putting a cat in a bin.

Well done Son. You did really well. I just wanted to point out, that when she said that the cat didn't look any worse for wear, she's missing the point. She's underestimating animal psychology and emotions. Perhaps she should look into all the latest information available on it. The cat could very well be living in fear with this kind of behaviour. Living in the fight or flight response is terrible for the mind and the body, and there's enough evidence that non-human mammals can live in this state. The other areas to consider are as you will know, that most complaints about animal cruelty are not even investigated by the Police. When charges are brought, then most of the charged are not brought to trial by the prosecutor fiscal, and on the off chance that they are, they're usually admonished for good behaviour or receive a temporary ban that can't be enforced. If he's doing that when he's on video, then what could he be doing for a joke when he's not on video?
Right. The cat and many animals may have high levels of flight or fight to deal with without this kind of bullshit put on top. I know my cat was never the same after a traumatic event and practicly flinched at everything.

Rachel's final "argument" reminds me of those people who sue you for performing CPR on them in a lifesaving situaion because you bruised a rib in the process. Apparently this can happen in the U.S.
It's possible to sue but you almost certainly wouldn't be successful even if the ribs were broken. You definitely wouldn't be if they were only bruised.

I don't know much about law, but I do know that when precedents are set it can be hard to undo in the future, and the same goes for cultural standards we set, right now we might think mob justice is a good idea because it benefits us or our case (as long as you're on the far left), but this all depends on the sociopolitical climate, what if a wave of anti-veganism kicks in and you're in next for feeding your cat plants?
Thats actually the fault of US medical systems. If you have an insurance and go to the hospital with a broken rib the insurance company, in order to not pay the hospital fees, will sue the "assailant", ie the person who broke your ribs.

Yes, the problem is the eyes that see's, what will the police's take be on this, what's the laws' take on this, and what will be the jury's take on this.
Feeding your cat vegan food might be perfectly healthy for them considering it has supplemented taurine etc, but will the law agree or will it deem you an animal abuser next?
That's the problem with politics, you create laws and attitudes in people on day that will benefit good people, that will in the next moment be used against good people, so you've always gotta think a little ahead and not just at the immediate benefits to you or your cause when it can have a huge backslash on you later on if i.e. the political mood changes.
In contrast to how much we denigrate the emotional intelligence of non-human animals, cats and other animals alike can create trust barriers, develop paranoia and PTSD-much like humans do when life events stimulate such phenomena. People forget the mentality it takes to have complete disregard for not just another individual, but an individual much smaller than he and one that had done nothing to him, to then proceed to do such things. And we brush it off as 'a mistake,' but what would have happened if the kick was 50% harder, breaking bones and rupturing vital organs? Or if the cat was older or unknowingly pregnant (if female and not spayed). Death and serious injury and complication: what would the response be then? And if it's different-why? If you don't want to risk losing your career or face backlash, have some humility and show some basic kindness before you abuse other individuals, regardless of their species; they're here with us, not for us.

@@Collabcreatemarketing Morally, it's a moot point if one were to eat the cat afterwards-the cat would be dead; in essence, suffering would have lead to death, and thus suffering ended. The reason it's irrelevant though, is that the ethical dilemma is harming the cat in the first place and taking away their autonomy to decide what happens to their own bodies. Which, in collective agreement, we all know the cat would lean preferably to not suffering; in this case being kicked or slapped (which sounds more light-hearted than it actually appeared). Finding reason to kill an individual doesn't make the act of taking an individual's life any more moral. In some circumstance, it may be justified (say you lived in a deserted tundra or in a developed nation and had little to no choice in your food options). But there's admittedly a large difference to truly needing to kill to survive, and killing because you wonder what cat tastes like. This is an individual's life in question, and I'd bet that if you're able to leave a comment here on TH-cam, you most likely have the option not to seek out such curiosity.

Completely agree that it's logical to argue that Zouma should be accountable for his actions, prosecuted under animal cruelty laws, and punished by a judge.
But given the fact that the "animal-loving" British public calling for his head supports the industrial cruelty inflicted on billions of other animals, I'm inclined to think that Zouma should be given a break. Why should Zouma be held to higher ethical standards than Joe Bloggs?
Just a thought: teachers in the UK, and certainly in some other countries too, get cancelled very easily, if they do something in their private life that is deemed to damage school reputation. They do lose their jobs, sometimes over minor things. Why not a footballer?
