- How to diagnose and repair engine noise .This is a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe I will show you also how to replace the idler pulley, tensioner and fan belt.

Oh yea start them by hand an you will have no problem with cross threading the bolts.

Mister fantastic. Love to see you doing that. How the hell did you get that camera so close without standing in the shot constantly? Nice job!! Had this one before on a Rover (Honda engine). One of the rotators (pully's) had bad (ball) bearings. And with force on it that souds noisy indeed. I see video was 6 years old but still, hope you are well. Hang on buddy. I am having the same exact sound. I was told it was the serpentine pulley, and the teninsor pulley. I could see from looking in that a pulley was shaking. The car also gets louder when I drive. Then after being told it was the pulleys he said it wasn't and said it was the alternator. I have a service contract. I hate getting a million different answers and I thought he would find it when he took it apart.
What did you come up with ?.
@@WISHBONEL7 It was the engine. I know they did some to it and acted like they didn't. I ended up getting a new car.

on some cars I have just took the bearing out of the pulley and got one at the parts store rather than to buy the whole idler pulley assembly
Your right you can just press in a new bearing if you ca't get the new one.
My pops used to use an old extra long flexible metal funnel to pinpoint noises on a motor.

Jim removing the tensioner appeared as if it was going to be a piece of cake. THEN came, what you called "A LITTLE PIN"
... that you had to maneuver to free-up the tensioner???
Is that something we can all expect to run in to?
To further confuse me, you made no mention of HOW TO or even HAVING TO put that "pin" back into place when reinstalling the tensioner.
I'm wondering if that troublesome "pin" will give a person such me (who's never done this before) trouble?

Literally, I took my Santa Fe in to get my windshield replaced and drove away and it started to sound exactly like it does in the video

Thank you for that video. I would like to ask if you could give me some info. about engine noise when you turn on the AC. I went to an auto repair shop and I agreed on replacing the auto tensioner as advised by them. However, the noise is still there. They said maybe it is the bearing of the alternator and I said, maybe next time. I just want to make sure first. Thanks in advance.

What was the the total cost of repair?
I can't find any films, where the knocking sound from the engine would appear at higher speeds. The car is 2003 Chevy Cavalier. I don't know if it has hydraulic tensioner. If someone has opinion about origin of the knocking sound at speeds (starts ~ @45 mi/h) and find time to share it, I would really appreciate it. I've heard that it can be fm/the some transmission problems, like low on fluid, or it can be engine tensioner belt. I hope on that, but afraid it might be smth more serious. Thank you for a great film.

Sounds good however if it's not acting bad after you flush it it'd be hard to diagnose is it intermittent still?

I just replaced mine about two months ago , and it just started giving me that type of grinding noise . I am going to try that sound test like you did .
Are there any brands of tensioners and pulleys to avoid ? .

In general, is a little vibration in the crank pulley or a little tracking (1/32 inch say) back and forth of the drive belt ok, or cause for concern?

Idk if you would ever see this but my car is kinda sounding like that but only when I idle and not driving. It also does it when I press on the power window button and it gets louder. What is it?
I'm sorry the diagnosis was the tensioner (pulley?) and the idle pulley?
Please advice me on my Maruti Suzuki Baleno 2020 model. I want to change the belts since it uses two belts. It has some noise from the minute I start the in the morning (low temperature) and when the engine it's warm. The sound goes along when I increase the speed of the car

Hi! MY 2016 TOYOTA CAMRY SE 2.5L IS MAKING THE SAME EXACT NOISE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT IT COULD BE THE SAME THANG? I CHANGED TENSION PULLY ALREADY BUT STILL NO CHANGE. I'm not Shure. but odometer is 6 figure broke.. Its a light sound. Hi my car is having the same noise, but the ac sometimes stops working. The car also stops at some points. They have told me it was the ac comppresor but their not sure can you help me?

Hi iv got a zafira 1.7 2012 reg, and around the back of engine iv got a ghostly noise come on and off goes up in pitch then goes then comes back even when car is idling can any one point me to help many thx

What if you only hear a squeaky sound when ac/heat is turned on and accelerated? When idle, no sounds...
Hey Jim my 03 Buick century makes a very similar noise in the same area(pulley system area) but it makes the noise when the car is on and when the ac is turned on it gets much louder and the car becomes sluggish. Help?
@jimthecarguy I have a 2011 Chrysler 200 3.6 Cylinder. Since it started getting cold it makes a noise when I start the car and accelerate until the car warms up and it stops. I then got random red battery codes as well as a check engine light code P06DA. I’m not sure what the cause of this is and would like help trying to figure out the main reason. Is there a way that I can message you so you can hear the noise? Thank you

My cat makes a mono hum noise when hitting 30 mph + it idles normally with no problems so it’s a bit confusing
It kind of sounds like a bad wheel bearing but it’s not I’ve checked all my wheels for wiggle and they’re all fine and the noise is in the engine bay only when acceleration and continues while driving
I got a 06 hyundai tib 2.0 engine i making noise at 35 or 45 rpm what it can be ???
2:10 That is the sound my car was making right before the water pump seized and sheared the pulley clean off.

I own the shop and have a part timer and my wife who is camera shy.You know that guy wanted me to just tie up the exhaust not fix it.
jimthecarguy if he didnt want it fixed properly, well if your roads are any like in Texas then that exhaust will be back on the ground in no time

please answer me. Is it a sound when the sound gets warm? I have the same sound in my car. But there are times when it sounds. sometimes when the engine is cold, the engine is cold when the engine is warm and the car is warm. This sound rarely comes from the idle. Sometimes the noise does not there. What could be my pronblem? injection problem, belt tensioner or alternator? Thanks in advance already. my car astra j 1.6 cdti at 105,000 kilometers. Any mechanics could not find the problem. Because the sound not allready there.
Yes that is the most difficult part of trying to find any noise.Sometime you will just need the noise to become more noticeable.
My 2014 hyundai tucson has that same sound by mine is x10 louder!! Going get it checked by the dealer...

My car Nissan Xtrail T31 has the unusual sound in the engine especially in the morning when I switch on the car and I put on drive and start accelerating it makes unusual sound, just like Subaru sound, and later it subsides after i have traveled about 2 to 3 kilometres, but hen i park for 2 hours and come again to start the car and put on drive and accelerate it do the very same, I have done the following already. 1. Change air cleaner. 2. Cleaned the airmass, 3. Check on air exhaust system, but all of the above to no avail, kindly help with ideas.

Do not use a screwdriver! It will turn in to a spear when you slip and catch it on the moving part! Use a length of thin soft plastic pipe or a green tree branch. Hold your head to the side of it, not the end. You will hear the vibrations just fine!
on the replacement on the idler, it's amazing that the customer didn't ask for a price :/

@@jimthecarguy I will try to find timing because it does occur randomly.. It's almost weird. I suspect it's from the aux fan being not so lubricated because for 7 years I haven't touch that part. The noise appears even if im not moving.. As long as engine is on.. (still observing if it occurs with aircondition is on)

@@jimthecarguy An update: Just went to Good Year and got my car checked. The mechanic was quiet convince that it was the aux fan. Because as he touched it, he says it has loosened and got a lot of free play.
I ask him if how it is possible and he goes explaining that when bearing is broken, a free play is created together with friction inside the motor and proceeds to say that, the source of the sound is the bearing.
I will have my car fixed and replaced the aux fan and I'm going to update you guys about it.. Thank you
My car makes a rattling (not sure) noise that only comes randomly and it sounds like it’s coming from under the car. It doesn’t specifically make a noise when I turn or when I accelerate or stop, it does it very randomly. In fact it makes more noise when I’m driving 50km/h than 90km/h. I’m very worried as I really need it to drive to work and don’t have time to check it. Is it safe to drive?
Can you give me more details about the noise such as where is the noise coming from in the front or back?Is it a raddled noise ?
jimthecarguy thank you for replying, I got it checked! the issue was the suspension spring on right side of the car, it was damaged, luckily I got it checked before it fully broke, that could have caused the car to tilt and be unable to drive it (at least that's what I've been told)
I can see the idler pulley shuddering, so probably its bearing... (only just started watching this video)

Umm my Santa Fe just started making that noise today
He said it’s idler is making noise… spins it I don’t hear nun but imma still change it and charge him 120 for parts and 350 for labor. Like it wasn’t even the issue. Now you probably caused a problem in the long run… smh
