I do prefer the faster tempo and a little more “season” in Steven’s voice as he got older. Aerosmith was my first concert at age 13 (yes, 32 years ago). Skid Row opened. Had no idea what I was getting into but I loved it! Ears rang for a couple days after. LOL.

      My first concert was Aerosmith!!
      Joan Jett opened for them..
I was 12, it was 33 yrs ago..
      I Love Skid Row..
I saw them open for GNR the next summer...
I miss the good ole' days of good music...
      LOL...

Steven Tyler wrote this song when he was like 12 or 13 years old. It was also one of the first songs that Aerosmith released where Steven is singing in his natural octave range. Before this, he would sing in a lower register as that was more mainstream.

Boston Strong is a matured and tempered rendition of Dream On. Very personalized to Steven Tyler's age and sobriety.

  • @tdrexel1

I loved this version because it’s so early, and Steven sounds so young, but overall it’s just less refined and loose, almost messy at times, and that includes the whole band. Again, super interesting and fun, but not his best performance by any means. I searched and found a 74 and 94 (Woodstock 94) version that I far preferred. The 74 he’s still young and the performance is much tighter. 94 it’s like they got better with age - the voice is more mature and not as high but at that point the young man had become a legend.

They were drunk during this performance. They talked about it in the book, where they had a bottle of JD in the limo on the way to the studio in order to be able to shake off the jitters and perform.

I believe whatever version people hear the first will remain their favorite. The man doesn't give bad performances. (Except once or twice when he forgot lyrics at a huge show and it was funny.) I like the slow for variety, but I love the MTV 10 year birthday performance with the orchestra the most. Maaaybe because that's the version I heard the first blinking yonkers ago.

I have to agree with you they were babies in this one here. And the other one they were more advanced musically and vocally. Steven Tyler no one can sing like him to this day he can still hit those high notes.

If their performance didn't improve over the next 20 years, that was 20 years they wasted. I liked the studio version, I liked this version, I liked the versions that came after. This is a timeless song. Although I do think their later live performances were better I still respect this one.

  • @harvenkarr
    @harvenkarr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

This is a younger Steven singing the purest form of the song, later versions show a maturation of the band both in performance and as the reasons for singing the song change.

I'm with you, MrLboyd. Maybe it's because I'm a 72-year-old woman, but I've gotta say, I prefer the more mature Steven Tyler (as heard, for instance, in the Boston-Marathon-themed version, with the children's choir, that you reacted to last July). So much more character!

That he wrote this so young speaks to him having an understanding of things well beyond his years. Wisdom; something earned, often through pain and suffering, though it can be shared to spare others the original cost. And he found a powerful piece of wisdom and put it to song. I don't know the inspiration, but for him to have learned the lesson the song tries to impart at so young and age, I hope it was imparted wisdom, but it feels like earned wisdom.

Aerosmith is the band I've seen the most times in concert. I have some memories of them :) They are a band that sounds the same in concert as on a record....or at least use to, its been awhile. Yeah. I would for sure not have picked this version. As for what song to do next of theirs? Depends. Live or video?
    Video:
    Love in an Elevator
    Seasons of Wither
    Pink :)
Have you done "Janie's got a Gun" yet?

that was partial live and as a lot of bands do they were playing it slow to keep from racing to try to get the dynamic build of the song right which they didn't. listen to it on the first album which is often referred to as dream on but it is Aerosmith album titled Aerosmith its unbelievable but they all are good

Is this like the first ever recording they ever did? This so so old! Soooo funny, these guys have been playing for far too long. We grew up with the album version, and a later (but not as late as the other one you wateched) vesion. He isn't even finsihing his phrases in this one. He has better range the 80's. Sorry this is such a moving target to find a version that is classic that we all are accustomed to.

This one is more like the original vinyl recording. Playing live. I think the one you are referring to may be the one with the white piano. If so, it is that performance which is overproduced and probably took about a thousand takes and voice overs. I only wish you had been around this music was fresh--you would have freakin loved it.

His youthful voice allows for sustained notes and pitch but the "hard rock and roll" lifestyle has made his voice more gravelly and less able to sustain long notes like he did and quite get to the highs as well. imo

The first thing that caught my attention was that he's not sustaining the notes in many places, and in combination with the slower tempo really kind of throws it off. Maybe I'm wrong, but there seems to be a missing instrument or two as well. I guess the saying holds true, practice makes perfect! I've seen a video of him singing this song just a few years back and he was amazing!
