I saw this when I was little, and spent what seemed a lifetime trying to find it (now and then) but found no reference because I did not know it's title, I looked up Faust movies but that did not work. Suddenly here it is!! Thanks!
Elizabeth Taylor didn't have much to do , though . The story is , naturally , about Faust 📖🦉. " His Nibs" portrayed it as well as anyone could have , imho. 🇬🇧😊🦉📖💙😊🇬🇧
Doctor Faustus (also known as Dr. Faustus and Il Dottor Faustus) is a 1967 British horror film adaptation of the 1588 Christopher Marlowe play The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus directed by Richard Burton and Nevill Coghill. The first theatrical film version of a Marlowe play, it was the only film directed by Burton or Coghill, Burton's Oxford University mentor. It starred Burton as the title character Faustus, with Elizabeth Taylor appearing in a silent role as Helen of Troy.
Taylor is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. You should see photos of her just being herself in the 60's. Also she was a child star, look up Black Beauty.
Have a look at Suddenly, Last Summer. She was absolutely magnificent in that film, as well as The Last Time I Saw Paris, and virtually everything else she was in.
Recommend the mirror cracked one of the best Agatha Christie adaptations again Elizabeth Taylor stars with rock Hudson also Tony Curtis , Edward fox ,kovak to name a few

I first saw this film when I was in a class on 16th c. English theatre way back in 1970. It totally enthralled me, as I was in love with Richard Burton at the time. His portrayal of the tragic antihero is dynamic, witty and even bombastic, but in a good way. Also amusing is the inclusion of scenes from other Marlowe plays, like "The Jew of Malta," "Edward II" and "Tamburlaine." Liz Taylor steals the show with her portrayal of classic beauties and her cackling infernal demon at the end does justice to the fitting end of Faustus. It has been a pleasure to revisit this cinematic curio.
This is the only film they made together, I've never seen. Thank you for sharing this treasure. They were incredible progressive Artists, way before their time.
They also made Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? which was quite intense too. Or did you mean that this is the only Burton/Taylor film you had never seen? Anyway, I read Marlowe's play once, and this was a good adaptation, but it did spare us the sight of the good doctor having his head smashed in before he went down to Hell.
@@thomassnider6691yes it’s abridged- they payed for it as they did it for free with the Oxford students. Burton felt as if he was Faust because of his success , he was so into bringing this classic to audiences and lots of the students got to go back to there hotel for post production parties
I'm focusing on these young and talented actors who are really performing very well, on a "dream team" production with Burton, in spite of his serious underachievement. It's as if he needed other big actors' egos flaring to inspire him to be better, and without (say a Olivier?) any other major actor, we see what little he offers. 😮
WOW!!!! Andreus Teuber, as Mephistopheles is EXCELLENT!!! Thanks for this upload and catch the silent FAUST, German Expressionism, also on TH-cam. Spectacular!!!
A masterpiece. Burton rules. Andreas Teuber is brilliant. The score by Mario Nascimbene is perfect in conveying the inevitable, from the very start. Burton co-directed with Nevill Coghill, the eminent literary scholar.
Amazing Movie 🎥. Only intellectual Occultist will/would appreciate this film. Its up there with "The Devils Bride/the Devil rides Out", and A Dark Song,
Thank you for the upload 2025 new year 🎉I’m sure it won’t be up for long . It’s so relevant are ppl not constantly talking about selling there souls for power and fame money
Events in Marlowe's life were sometimes as extreme as those found in his plays.[d] Differing sensational reports of Marlowe's death in 1593 abounded after the event and are contested by scholars today owing to a lack of good documentation. There have been many conjectures as to the nature and reason for his death, including a vicious bar-room fight, blasphemous libel against the church, homosexual intrigue, betrayal by another playwright, and espionage from the highest level: the Privy Council of Elizabeth I. An official coroner's account of Marlowe's death was discovered only in 1925,[6] and it did little to persuade all scholars that it told the whole story, nor did it eliminate the uncertainties present in his biography.
However, in Doctor Faustus, they are said to a devil posing as Helen, and are a response to the illusion; they may even express disappointment that she is not more beautiful. The German poet and polymath Johann Wolfgang von Goethe re-envisioned the meeting of Faust and Helen. In Faust: The Second Part of the Tragedy, the union of Helen and Faust becomes a complex allegory of the meeting of the classical-ideal and modern worlds.

My two favorite old actors with substantial accomplishments you had to perform no cgi or fake acting

I did this play for A'levels many years ago. The movie adaptation helped us to understand Marlowe's vision.

Listen to the incredible dialogue, no burton didn’t do it for money as he paid for this film . He was a hugely influenced by Marlow

RICHARD BURTON RULED
Anybody know whether Marlowe ever met John Dee? Some of the ritual stuff seems reasonably accurate.
Unsure but Anthony Burgess' a dead man in Deptford gives you a fictional view of the time and this incredible author
This conjecture about them both being spies Maybe why they met
Silly remarks about it being boring , we’ll go and watch something else . It’s a classic novella . It’s about selling your soul and being tricked
Dr Faust signed his name, in BLOOD. I don't see any Avenue for repentance as he made choice of this own free will...😩💀👹
