Some great find, once again! Thank you, CCC! Theres no vanity in this movie at all! Richard Burton is perfect as Richard Wagner, just perfect! Vittorio Storaro´s cinematography captures the 19th century splendidly with its efficiency and it never fails to connect with the viewer! After all, Vittorio is still well known and critically acclaimed for photographing Francis Ford Coppola´s APOCALYPSE NOW, THE COTTON CLUB and other heartgripping pictures that they did together! Also Bernardo Bertolucci´s immensely riveting and almighty saga, 1900 (1976) plus his Academy Award-winning masterpiece from 1987, THE LAST EMPEROR and their 1993 collaboration, LITTLE BUDDHA, three of them are my personal favorites! The latter two (from 1987/1993) were composed by YMO frontman and brilliant musical impresario, Ryuichi Sakamoto (who equally in turn plays the Japanese imperial officer Masahiko Amakasu in THE LAST EMPEROR, what a fantastic and excellent casting choice it was on Bertolucci´s part). Ryuichi had played a closeted gay captain in an early 80s film that i still love and will never deny my true admiration to it, Nagisa Oshima´s MERRY CHRISTMAS MR LAWRENCE! And there is a interesting but altogether grim trivia for you: This and other seminal projects Richard Burton appeared in (including an adaptation of George Orwell´s dystopic piece of nightmare, "Guess which year?") that followed were the last ones being completed before he died on August 25th 1984. And i think especially the movie itself directed by Michael Radford with John Hurt, Rupert Baderman, Cyril Cusack, Gregor Fisher, James Walker and Suzanna Hamilton is a great testament to his career! Bar none, no contest, it is really beautiful!

What an impossible man to get along with. It's understandable but he really knew how to use people while even being up front about it. This movie shows him as a man who wants unconditonal love but tends to dispise the people that try to help him because of the conditions they may attach to the support. I understand Beethoven was a lot like that too. He was a brilliant egoist. He stuck to his guns even if most were borrowed. He had to be very brave. This movie was a great effort I didn't even know existed.
At least there’s plenty of Wagner’s music in this ambitious film, but the script doesn’t do the composer any favours. The problem is that the incredible creativity in the music stands on its own merits, while Wagner the man seems to have been a burden on those who knew him. Confusing the two together diminishes his achievements. In my view one can truly love the music, while ignoring the man. The negative superficialities that were later associated with Wagner’s literary sources are irrelevant in any case. The music is full of love and humanity, and of course any music drama needs its libretto. That’s where the misunderstandings arise. The text was already there, so to speak, but music to illuminate it was needed.
I don't feel that the script suffers at all from pairing the music with the man's personality and can't imagine what you think the movie should be if it's not going to be about the man, warts and all. "..negative superficialities.." What are you referring to?
A strange time in European history, much upheaval and unrest….particularly in the Balkans, while the minor German states were torn between supporting and allying with either the Austro-Hungarian Empire or the rising power of Prussia ,Wagner was the representative of the “New Germany “that came into fruition with the Franko/Prussian war and the coronation of Kaiser Wilhelm I..

@@BurkhartBerthold-m8d Indeed he did. Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung) is a cycle of four German-language epic music dramas composed by Richard Wagner. The composer termed the cycle a "Bühnenfestspiel" (stage festival play), structured in three days preceded by a Vorabend ("preliminary evening"). 1849 SAXONY REVOLUTION & WAGNER Before the events of May 1849, Dresden was already known as a cultural centre for liberals and democrats; the anarchist Dresdner Zeitung newspaper was partly edited by the music director August Röckel and contained articles by Mikhail Bakunin, who came to Dresden in March 1849. The Saxon government later accused Bakunin of being the revolutionaries' ringleader, although this is unlikely to have been the case. Röckel also published the popular democratic newspaper Volksblätter. Richard Wagner the composer, at the time Royal Saxon Court Conductor, had been inspired by the revolutionary spirit since 1848 and was befriended by Röckel and Bakunin. He wrote passionate articles in the Volksblätter inciting people to revolt, and when fighting broke out he took a very active part in it, making hand grenades and standing as a look out at the top of the Kreuzkirche. The architect Gottfried Semper was until 1849 less politically active, but had made known his democratic beliefs and felt compelled to stand up for them, also taking a lead role on the barricades. The Saxon government arrested Bakunin and Röckel in Chemnitz, but Tzschirner, Heubner and Todt escaped. Todt died early in his Swiss exile at Rießbach in 1852. Semper and Wagner were on the government's wanted list, but also escaped, to Zürich, where Wagner remained. From 1849 the German states saw a sharp rise in emigration as thousands deserted their homeland for political reasons, many of them artists, writers and other well-educated, prominent members of society. The revolution had a slight effect on the political system, in that the nobility lost some of its power in the lower house, but otherwise was a complete failure.

I think it's a rather heroic undertaking for Burton at this point in his career. I wonder if we can find any statement by the actor about what attracted him to the project. Just, btw, as "conducting" by an actor in a movie goes, this doesn't look so terrible. Bradley Cooper's impression of Bernstein on the podium made me avert my eyes.
3 questions: (1) Is this really complete? Did the mini series run out of money or is there a really complete version out there somewhere? (2) Why did they ruin the sound track by playing popular snippets from the music dramas over and over again until you're sick of them? (3) Where's the young Nietzsche?
@@sabine4759 Burton, after a while, was hired to be Burton, saying lines in that magnificent voice and using face muscles to convey some emotion. Why do you think we used to rule the world? Then our “leaders” acted like effing fools and gave it all away, instead of building a great wall around Europe, which is what they should have done.
Unfortunately.. With all my love to Richard Burton and recognition of his talent.. I can't agree with his performance of R. Wagner in many aspects. No...Not satisfying. Too old, bad looking for 35 yo Wagner in 1848. Not persuasive as character itself.. And general casting isn't good, but Minni.
I cannot believe (though I must) that this was the only film of which Laszlo Galffi (Swan prince of Bavaria) took part. Hw was exquisitely beautiful. What a waste.
I saw my first Ring aged 19 at the Royal Opera in London. My second aged 25 at Bayreuth. I adore Wagner's works and had long looked forward to seeing this series (although the final - and possibly the more interesting part is missing - it's elsewhere on youtube). But I Ifind the series overly slow moving. Time has not been good to the riot scenes in Dresden which seem incredibly un-revolutionary! Richard Burton has his moments, but his Wagner is all bluster and therefore also somewhat boring. He also is the same age throughout, so when he is called in Dresden "Young Wagner" it is hardly believable. I also cannot understand why the musical excerpts are not linked to the dialogue. Why have part of the Parsifal Transformation scene when the characters are talking about Lohengrin? Similarly, it is difficult to understand why short excerpts from the Ring are played throughout with no specific references in the dialogue. Wonderful to see some of the cream of British acting in many of the roles, though, and Andrew Cruickshank is splendid as the Narrator.

Amazing! Thanks for pointing it out. He's not half-bad, too!
I had no idea Wagner was such a flawed man. So dimensional!!
@CCC - Have you ever seen Ken Russell's Listomania, or his film on Gustave Mahler?
Yup, it was utter tripe then with Roger Daltry & a huge phallus! Not Roger's that is!
I wonder whether the almost 4 hours of the movie is a reverberation of the Eugene Oneguin Lensky aria.
I think in 1983 Richard, Burton, not Wagner, needed at least two bottles of scotch to stay sober.
Könnte durchaus sein -
Vodka
Are you planning to upload all ten episodes?
A gainfully employed musical genius, relaxing in his enormous room full of beautiful paintings, complaining to his charming and erudite wife about how monarchy sucks
!Què serie-pelìcula!!!!! estupenda , ..- Actores buenìsimos , ambientaciònes de època , LA MÙSICA .
la historia de este extraordinario mùsico . Disfrute total!! gracias por compartirlo. desdes argentina.-
Where is the other half of the video?
I have this on dvd for many years.
Is it the full series?
The original is a 10-part series, roughly 8 hours.
Two or three seconds in, something is pixelated = censored.
That’s sad and also untrue to the original movie.
The millennium is a very censorious time sadly & due to Millennials who can't think for themselves & go into shock horror at the slightest things. Witch-hunts aplenty as well. It's more 1984.
Just shows how ridiculous the censor snowflakes have been allowed to thrive.
Yes....its a nude Wagnerian blacksmith hammering. TH-cam....cannot stand any nudity. But they are happy to show any violence no matter how bad.
😪😪
❤@@robertwilson123not true .You have to prove you're age before watching pornographic movies any young children with a smart phone can watch violent movies on you tube. Sometime they ask for proof of age such as credit cared details birth certificate passport drivers licence photo id
Episode three please!
A great role maybe his best for Richard burton for namesake Richard Wagner one year before Burton's death
For a second in the very beginning I thought I was watching Excalibur.
3 questions: (1) Is this really complete? Did the mini series run out of money or is there a really complete version out there somewhere? (2) Why did they ruin the sound track by playing popular snippets from the music dramas over and over again until you're sick of them? (3) Where's the young Nietzsche?
When does Bruckner appear? Thank you.
Where is the third part? 😢
Richard Burton playing Richard Burton. But look at the other star actors
You have no clue about acting!
@@sabine4759 Burton, after a while, was hired to be Burton, saying lines in that magnificent voice and using face muscles to convey some emotion.
One could almost say that in this we have Wagner doing a Burton impression.
I'm amazed and grateful that he took on this project at this stage of his life. A very detailed script and in so many elaborate settings - I wonder what attracted him to it.
Donde esta el resto!!!! When you upload the last part?!!!!
The movie is as long as his operas!
It is good to see Bakunin appear before he has yet to become an anarchist.
Great in every respect except for the horrific pixelation of the nudes (why? is that Mr Algorithm or...?). Thank you for uploading a classic!
Nu e complet filmul! Lipsesc ultimile episoade!
Film classic subtitle Persian very very good ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤thanks ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
A musical genius doth not make the man i am glad Bob Dylan has a bust of Mozart on stage when he plays live.
Bob would laugh about someone comparing him to Wagner or Mozart
Im only half Caucasian but isnt anglo-european culture sublime? Incomparable overall. Theres some big hitters here too. Redgrave, burton. Oh dear, i thought id sleep early tonight. And the opening dialogue was eloquent and mesmerizing
Dear friend, you are welcome to encounter both the work of Wagner and the performance done by the cast of this movie! Take time, have a seat and enjoy.
Why do you think we used to rule the world? Then our “leaders” acted like effing fools and gave it all away, instead of building a great wall around Europe, which is what they should have done.
Yes sir, yes it is!
Masz rację. Ta gra jest zbyt ciężka, manierystyczna. Zbyt mnie to męczy. Przerywam oglądanie
Please film story Giuseppe Verdi
Wagner GRAN COMPOSITOR....DE LOS MEJORES PERO DETRÁS SIN DUDA DE BAG Y MOZART
Immortal!!! ❤️♥️🌏🌍🌎🌐
I cannot believe (though I must) that this was the only film of which Laszlo Galffi (Swan prince of Bavaria) took part. Hw was exquisitely beautiful. What a waste.
En español por favor!!
no ending ?
👍.
Long long ago in NYC I had a former Juliard Master Musician who made a choice to not continue (brilliant pianist) and later taught "Sacred Sciences or Sacred Geomentry"
He used music much. (Art, Music ect)
Wagner of course.
If you look closely at 2:03:29 You can see the “proud boyz”.
