I have not experienced Peter Lorries acting I have learned now his mastery of expressing his feelings in real beauty 😮 Thankyou for sharing the knowledge.
Being an old movie buff, I've seen this gem before but not in awhile. Peter Lorre was an acting genius, as well as Edward Arnold. Seeing Mr. Arnold makes me think of The Devil & Daniel Webster, another old gem. Thanks for uploading this. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.
Always a pleasure to watch a Peter Lorre performance. A good film, although it in no way captures the brilliance of Fyodor Dostoyevsky's novel. It's a superb novel, indeed all five of the Dostoyevsky novels I've read were outstanding. The translations flow along in a chatty style at times, at others weighty moral issues are discussed amongst the characters. "Crime And Punishment", "Notes From The Underground", "Demons", "The Idiot" and "The Brothers Karamazov" are great novels, and not difficult to read in the English translations.
Certainly not "by the book", yet oddly true to its (twisted) spirit. Whatever : it's wonderful to watch the young and dramatic Peter Lorre, so different from his post-war comedies.
Thank you for sharing this absolute gem. Sad in some senses that Peter Lorre would be typecast in these rolls throughout his career, but this one gave him center stage, and deservedly so. I was, like so many here thoroughly entertained. Chapeau
A truly stupendous performance. The best I’ve ever seen Peter Lorre do. Normally, I pass on movies that have been monetized; but I watched this one from beginning to end, and I’m glad I did! Truly great stuff! ❤
The best pillow is a clean conscious. This movie highlights the torture one endures as a result of having your conscious haunting you every second. It delves deep inside until you must free it for the sake of your sanity, your survival.
From Crime & Punishment to Mr. Moto, I enjoy this man's work immensely. P.S. The way Mr. Lorre throws himself around in Mr. Moto is something to behold.
What an interesting take on this classic novel. Superb acting all round. I highly recommend this movie, and I also highly recommend reading the novel as it was written.
Well the original two writers of Colombo said that they built the character of Colombo on the basis of the detective in the book (Crime and Punishment). When I was reading the book I could clearly see it but I have to say the detective in this movie is nothing like that.
Peter Lorre amongst the best . Saw Napolian picture at the off . Did he play him in other movies ?. Morals coming out of the woodwork . They certainly dont make these any more . Fabulous !! . Thanks all . Ðave
I think it must have been challenging to translate Dostoyevsky's great novel for the Hollywood screen. The realization of this is largely due to the director von Sternberg's lucky hand in focusing on the tension between the detective and the criminal (Peter Lorre) - whose performance as the guilt tormented murderer here reaches unimaginable heights. Rarely have I seen a face express such diverse emotions, an ability almost only a Peter Lorre can master. This film cannot help but make you think.
Fairly faithful to the novel and the mixture of guilt and anxiety felt by Raskolnikov is very well rendered by Peter Lore who plays a part very close to his part in Fritz Lang M.
Watching this movie after reading the book is a bit like -- having the chance to see the movie version of Spiderman, after reading years of the comic book, only to find that, in the movie, the main character drives a Batmobile, has a young assistant named Robin, and gets a bat-signal from the police commissioner whenever there's a threat to public order. 😃
The book is different but I think the movie is also very good. If you like Peter Lorre as a criminal watch "M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder" a German film from 1931 by Fritz Lang.
Peter Lorre always plays creepy, whiny Peter Lorre, which is actually a good thing. I keep expecting him to say: "Rick, you must hide me!" But, wait, this isn't Casbalanca 😉
Peter Lorre had just arrived in America. Fresh off the five-Oscar-winning "It Happened Last Night", Columbia boss Harry Cohn was going whole-hog to get his studio out of the "Poverty Row" category. This was one of the 'prestige' films designed to do that, with Josef von Sternberg directing and Paramount's BP Schulberg producing. One of the last to use that old Columbia logo. Maybe not the best film at only 88 minutes, but it showcased Lorre and co-star Marian Marsh.
I had not seen this classic before. I read the book in the 70s. I don't know how I missed this. Simply gut-wrenching. Edward Arnold is superb in this role, as is the cast. Peter Lorre gives a powerful performance. Thank you.
Not the way I understood the book but different constructions are feasible. Crime and Punishment ought to be read. It cannot be captured in a movie 41:3341:33
Dostoevsky's insightful take on the human condition painful as it may be always tempered with wit. Peter Lorre was perfect for this role. As he was for the part of Mr.Cairo and the pediphile muderer In M. May he rest in peace a true screen legend.
Peter Lorrie scared the heck out of me as a little kid when he stood looking up from the bottom of the stairs doing his freaky creepy Renfield "laugh" in Dracula. That particular scene was part of the intro to The Plenty Scary Movie every weekend at midnight, which the four of us watched religiously. And since it freaked me out so much since I first had heard it, every weekend at midnight during the intro I'd hide in the bathroom with my hands over my ears, so of course my siblings and cousins went out of their way to crank up the volume. lol
Peter lorre didn't play in Dracula....itbink you might be thinking of Dwight Frye but Peter did play many terrifying roles in his lifetime. I recommend seeing him in Beast With Five Fingers. Most people would recommend M but with Beast With Five Fingers, you don't quite know what his character is up to but you know something is off from the very beginning. It gets even scarier once he descends into madness
You're not the first person to confuse Dwight Frye and Peter Lorre. In Frankenstein Dwight Frye played the hunchback Fritz, who stole the brain and helped Frankenstein build his monster. In Son of Frankenstein a new character was introduced named Ygor, played by Bela Lugosi. To this day people popularly associate Peter Lorre with a hunchback named Igor, despite Lorre not having been in the films, and Ygor not being a hunchback. Dwight Frye also became typecast as kooks. He was finally given a large dramatic role in a film that would have been a big break for him, when he sadly died of a sudden heart attack.
Not a bad version, but some significant differences from the book. Peter Lorre does not have the emotional range of e.g. John Hurt, but Sonia is very well cast in this film. The censors of the day do not reveal how a girl desperate for even 1 rouble made money to feed her family. Yes, she visits Rodion in prison and the book has far more emotion than the movie. Get the unabridged version if you can. 😢 In video versions, I like Ian McDiarmid as Porfiry. Enjoy.
Peter Lorrie reprising his 1931 film by Austrian director Fritz Lang ‘M’. Interesting Lorrie seems to play a better role when he adds a touch of comedy, such as in the 1953 Bogart movie,’Beat the Devil’.
The story deviates significantly from the novel. Peter Lorre as always is great, but the director couldn't find the right period clothing. Sheesh. The dialog is good and the suspense is palpable.
It became a bit too repetitive. The inspector finds a clue/ a lead. Roderick has a tantrum. The inspector changes his mind and asks for an apology. Roderick feels guilty. It was a very Hollywood rendition of Dostojewski's work.
Aussi, Peter L'ordre gives me the creeps. My keyboard turned Lorre to L'ordre. What would Fyodor say? I don't have epilepsy. I have PTSD migraine seizures. Never had a migraine headache. I rarely have headaches. They are caused by tension. But they sont disparu.
Definitely not the best Stenberg film but.. It's still very well crafted. Peter Lorre is completely wrong - casted. He was a good an peculiar actor.. But he is definitely far away from Dostoevsky's realm🌟🌟🌟
Hollywood buys the rights so they can have the famous title but this is not any reflection of the novel, it's another plot entirely. The motivations are different, the crime is different, Peter Lorre is not the tall thin vain young man of the book, he would be better playing the investigator.
I find "gaudeamus igitur" at the beginning quite disconcerting. We had to learn this student song at school and now I'm searching my memory for the words instead of watching.
Good shot! Rather funny funny interpretation. But the actors are good. The ambience of America's well to do middle class of 50's is shown rather well. Like it. Thanks a lot! 😅 "...The circle of these revolutionaries (cinematographists) is narrow. They are terribly far from the people. But their cause is not lost..." Vladimir Lenin (from his article ‘In Memory of Herzen’)
Johnny Arthur. I loved seeing him and Lorre together. He was a fine comedic actor in his own right. Before The Hays Code he played very effeminite characters, but had to tone it down once the censors were in charge.
I cannot watch this. I know only the French version & the Japanese version. I loved "The Idiot" : Dostoyevsky's best work. Prince Mishkin. I have a Russian keyboard. This is French & English, Japanese and a few others.
This is an amazing film! A "must watch" for all old film buffs. Peter Lorre at his finest! Thanks for the video.
you said it young man! whether yer old and gray haired like me, or just a vintage film buff, its well worth the watch 🎬🎥🥂🧓
Super hooked on old flicks, so much so that I see myself incorporating some of the styles they wore back in the day. I love these movies!
An excellent movie! True acting, had many emotions tugging at one's heart and soul. Peter Lorre was amazing! Thank you!
Are you 😂joking?
What a great actor Peter Lorre was!
He was but for this one is miscast. He does not look the part.
A great film with a great cast. Peter Lorre so underrated as an actor. Marian Marsh never got the roles she deserved and what a beautiful woman.

Lorre and Arnold really made magic in this.
Peter Lorre, one of the finest actors of his time

Edward Arnold as the policeman was excellent in this movie. Kind of a Columbo character.
Columbo was partly based on him actually. On the character of the detective in the book.
This is like watching an episode of Colombo. Masterful!
It’s like the episode with Jose Ferrer where he accuses Jose’s son of the murder Jose committed and Jose ends up confessing because he loves his son.
