To answer your question. We need a far greater range on these cars. I know its a massive work in progress, and every year its getting better and better, but until we reach that mythical 500miles in a charge, I don't see it really replacing Gas or Diesel power until then.
That and Starbucks recharging stations. That would be a hit.
Steve Smith Im not advertising Starbucks to be good or bad, but they are plentiful. If you had the choice in what kind of a charging station you'd be stuck in for the next half an hour or more. Id go for the nice coffee shop over GhettoGas any day.
Happy to see more EVs! I swear by my Volt, and am glad there are more people taking advantage of electric efficiency and performance.
Simple: the price. As soon as the prices are going down a bit, I'm making the move for many reasons.
1- I'm a tree hugger and I feel bad every time i'm filling the tank. Yes, that's correct, I assume it.
2- Every single international crisis is related to oil in some way. The cynic will say "hey, we got weapons to sell and if it's not oil, it'll be another ressource". I know.
3- That 100% torque at 0 km/h is kind of fun.
4- Charging stations are getting quicker and quicker so the "i'm afraid to go off battery" reason is not pertinent anymore.
So yeah, I got a year left on my gas car lease and then i'll choose between the Bolt, the E-Golf (if it's coming to Canada one day) and the Leaf.
My smart electric drive is $400 down, $139/month. This is in a state with zero incentives, so a lot of people can lease it for
I agree, the initial cost is the only problem for me. I also don't drive enough miles/year to really save money in the long run. If I had to drive every day about 30 miles/50km or more, or drive a lot around town, then I would seriously consider this car or any other EV.

The space up front under the bonnet they should have placed more batteries. For more range and for better mass distribution.
I got one of these from our sponsor to drive. They are great fun in the city. So cool zipping around almost silently. If range was 500km, I'd buy one personally in a heartbeat.

I wish people wouldn't try to build up other cars by attempting to portray Prius buyers as essentially poseurs. The Prius is actually an amazingly great car for what it's intended to be. With a 4 door hatch design, it is extremely roomy and can swallow surprisingly large objects. It's comfortable, crazy reliable, holds its value, and gets better mileage than anything in its segment (here in the USA). It never would have become the monster sales success it's been without those attributes. I've been a passenger in an e-Golf, and WOW is there torque. I hope it's our next car, but I've gotta give props to Toyota for getting A LOT right about the Prius.
People don't want weird looking cars just cause they're electric. The prius, and leaf look very stupid and lame. That is NOT why people buy those cars. Look at the Tesla, and now the e-golf. Just make the cars look normal, not like a bad chinese toy.

What I need in a EV is to be able to drive cross country at 75 mph for 400 miles. I need a purchase price of less than $35K and a performance and handling of a Tesla S. A medium size SUV would work for me.
I like that someone made an electric car that looks like a normal car. My only issue is cost. Id rather buy the gti. The price difference actually pays for the gas cost still for me. I only put 6,000 miles a year on my car. We use the wife's SUV for all our long range trips anyways. Don't get me wrong i do hope people buy them so the technology will move forward faster and become more cost effective. But at this point i can't justify the cost just to go green.
no exhaust system, transmission, oil, spark plugs, fuel pumps, etc. the cost of a Nissan Leaf is far cheaper than any other car on the market. I guess no one really cares if they pass their expenses of pollution onto their children's generation. I'm sure the visible smog in los angeles and everywhere else has no real affect on people. Global warming is a myth too. idiots.

I would need a 120 - 150 mile range to be 100% comfortable. Normal commute is 40 miles, however 1 or 2 days a week I'll do it twice in a day and would like a bit of extra wiggle room for additional errands or detours. The price is still a little high.
You can buy brand new eGolf SE for $30K, including fast DC charger installed. This is prior to any state or federal incentives. I have booked my tesla model 3 but I'm kind of leaning towards this car. I am familiar with VW cars and have been driving Passat 2003 for 4 years now. This car looks really beautiful

It comes with the 1.4TSi engine and an Electric Motor under the bonnet !!!
It comes with a DSG gearbox which has D for Drive and B for Battery mode etc !!!
What it would take for me to get an EV? (Yes, me. I'm answering for myself only.)
Three things.
1 - Lower the prohibiting price. They way to expensive.
2 - Get better range. I would want to drive it. Not look at it recharge from the window.
2 - Faster recharges. I don't want to stop for long periods of time, as I said, I would like to use it. Not look at it recharge.
(Yes there are two 2s. Number one is the real big issue. Numbers two, even if they are very important, are not as much of a wall as the price.)

Batteries in the leaf are entirely under the car - between the frame. the hump in the back is electronics.. more of which moved to the engine compartment in the newer models. The plus for the VW is handling.. simplicity of the display ( pro or con your choice), better fit and finish which is much better than American made nissans.. and perhaps a 10% range increase ..but then again...the leaf plus is the sheer number of cars on the road.. so more spares and cheaper new or used...plus a lot of well developed apps for techies. VW.. just nicer, and better if they reach good production numbers and availability.
I also don't agree with the opinion on Prius owners. I've considered one solely for the MPGs, but in fact the Prius "stigma" really keeps me away. Instead, I now think my ideal garage would be an eGolf for local driving, a Golf Diesel for longer trips, and my old 911 for fun. :)
Great review. 1st video in the USA, no? As far as electric: the i3 (& i8!!) is a nice balance plus it has the optional gas generator. A loaded GTI Autobahn = $34K. (R expected base $37K). My GF just got a Mk7 GTI S w/DSG, the cool LED/Xenons & plaid seats. That I'd take over the eGolf. It was ~$27K.

EVs, like PHEVs, will always be niche things until charging takes as much as filling the tank in an ICE vehicle. The focus shouldn't be on range, it should be on battery technology that makes it possible to fully charge in 10 or 15 minutes. Only then will these vehicles become more than city cars.

+João Soares Agree! Do you know there's now a system called CSS that can charge the e-Golf (and the e-UP) to 80% in 30 minutes? That's clearly the future, and it will make it possible for these cars to leave the city. But although I agree the focus should be on speed of charge, 70-90 miles of range is pretty pathetic...
Well I don't know the name of the Japanese company. 6 Minute charge 200 mile battery. Can't wait to get my hands on One battery.
The range still isn't quite enough. My commute is 40 miles each way - 150 mile range would make it more appealing. Going to buy a TDI instead!
VWoA is supposedly releasing the updated battery for 2017. Real world range could possibly be 125 mi or better. It just seems unclear whether the car will make an appearance in the fall of 2016 or spring of 17 and be an 2018 model.
Okay, this reviewer talked me out of the VW. I'll wait another year for the Tesla III, which is purpose built to be an electric. My brother owns a Model S and it is a truly amazing car.
Big issue with EV is range. Get the range up to where a comparable fossil fuel vehicle is, and you got me. The price range is too expensive for what you get right now. Great technology, though.
Until they reach at least 250 miles of range, can be purchased for less than $25,000 and perform decently in twisty roads, I will be sticking with a smaller turbocharged manual (which nowadays get pretty close to 40mpg).

I hated all ev cars. I bought an EV golf 3 days watching this. They don't even sell them in my state. I'm so excited!
The only way to answer that final question honestly is to add up the amount of gas you have purchased last year. The total amount of car payments last year and insurance and pit that annual total against you new proposed EV total. The EV will win but based on the average persons rate of travel. 90 miles is not a safe bet to take. I recommend at least 150 to 200 miles capability to satisfy the average car buyer.
The term for torque measurement is foot-pounds I believe, not the reverse. Also, you listed a few EV's but you left out a bunch. The only ones you recognized where the Leaf, Golf and Tesla. However, there are also the RAV4 Toyota, the Fit from Honda, the tiny Fiat 500, the Smart EV, the BMW i3, Chevy Spark, Renault Zoe, Mitsubishi "i", and others. Now, to answer your question about whether we're really ready to make the leap, I have had a Prius since 2004 which is still running strong. However, I wanted to get out of the gasoline business. I'm tired of being a pawn to the petroleum companies and playing my part in endless tensions in the middle east. So I recently purchased a used 2011 Nissan Leaf and couldn't be happier. It only has 28,000 miles on it and has almost full battery capacity. I am zipping around the hills of Berkeley California and the Bay Area, happy as a lark. The Leaf is way more fun to drive than the Prius and I'm slowly getting used to range anxiety. I just have to begin thinking about my car the same way I do my cell phone. Did I remember to plug it in at night? How long will I be away from a charger tomorrow? Stuff like that. So far, it's worth it. Then again, I did not sell the Prius. I'm keeping that around for the longer trips. So yes, I do have an extra insurance policy and annual registration to pay on the second car. Insurance is an extra $65 per month. In a couple of years I will probably sell them both and get a longer range electric. But I couldn't wait any longer to own a pure electric. At just under $13,000 an almost new Leaf was too irresistible.
I'm two years late but nothing has changed:
The way I look at the EV/hybrid market today is you have two boxes. You have amazingly cool, sexy, but prohibitively costly (tesla,bmw i8). Or you have boring, ugly, econobox that drives like a dump truck, and very often looks like something that landed in Roswell (everything else). I need a middle ground there and I'd jump. Make it cool looking, that is super fun to drive, for not much more cost than traditional options, and I'd buy one in a heartbeat. Pop 1/4 or 1/2 of Tesla's skateboard under a something like a Mini Cooper S, GTI, low end Porsche, ScionFRS, and I'm game; after somebody turned in their 2-3 year old lease car.

thanks Motoman for the review! I've been eagerly awaiting real reviews of the US spec car(was this US spec?). I drive an R32 mk4 and a mk5 GTI. My plan is to drop the mk5 gti for this car. Mainly as a commuter car for me. I can't part with the R32, but in comparison the GTi is meh… and I hate having to put oil into the 2.0 T every week. So here's the reason's I would get the E Golf: Saving milage on my R32, saving loads of $ on gas, saving loads of money on service! (no oil, no coolant, not even brakes from what I've read) My commute is 15 miles from South SF to the Presidio( 30-40min), so it's a brief freeway run, and then lots of stop and go city street traffic, I can plug it in at work (or not) and still have plenty range to run errands after work if needed. I also have 2 kids, so 4 doors and all the storage of a regular golf is a plus( not like the Focus EV). I also like the LED headlights, (was hoping for LED tails) the paddle shifters control the re-gen, so you can use them like down shifting instead of the brake pedal. and lets face it, electric cars are the future.. And this will bridge the gap until the Tesla model III comes out in a few years. Oh and it doesn't look like butt, (Prius, Leaf, Rav4, Versa etc..)

ILM actually :) , hey did the E golf have electric folding mirrors? And did they mention anything about optional wheel/tire packages? The euro spec one has larger (better looking wheels as an option) and the euro spec one has LED tail lights ($1000 aftermarket conversion) sheesh..
Sadly . . . No on both . . . I agree - don't love the look of the wheels.

JAEGERTECH For your commute, you would not have a problem however, my guess is that you will not be getting air on Gough or Franklin . . .
For me to buy an EV, it would just have to come down to price. I wouldn't mind a 60 mile range car, if it was 12k. Because then it would be a great city car, and if I needed a highway cruiser, I would get a cheap gas car. I could spend ~25k for two cars, and use the EV primarily, and the other car for fun or road trips.
At 30K+ it is hard to justify the range anxiety of 100 miles.
only caring about price is why walmart exists and most of you are broke, and your children can't find decent paying jobs when they graduate from college. the price of greed and selfishness is higher than you can imagine. your children will pay the price. good luck with that.
Smart electric drive is just under 70 combined on range. I'm leasing mine for $400 down, $139 a month. The future is already here, people just need to look for what's already out there between the smart EV and the Leaf.
We should all make an extra effort to get an EV vehicle for its benefit to the environment, this way we are being socially responsible and that is what should be our priority! ;-)

Motoman asks "What would it take you to buy an e-Golf?" Only one thing: availability. Our local Colorado dealers do not know when they will be available here. At first they sent offers for "clean" diesel versions but stopped that campaign (for obvious reasons) and gone silent. After 3 years of driving my Leaf (my son calls it the Ugleaf), I'm ready to look mainstream but enjoy the MANY benefits of EV.
There's an e-Golf listed on Denver.Craigslist for $20k with super low miles. I'd get it if I were an adult, had a good job and stuff....I'm just a kid though lol: denver.craigslist.org/ctd/5578439950.html

Hearing rumors of the US Govt motivating VW to go beyond compliance car approach. I'm going to wait and few months and look at Bolt, new Leaf and hope the e-Golf goes nationwide.
I love golf's..gti, TDI, R, vr6, E-, you name it. I love the design, how useful and spacious they are, and the drive quality. ... ... and, that would be cool if the American govt could enforce VW to go beyond compliance.
Can you run the AC or Heater while charging? Can you run the AC or Heater while parked unplugged with lights off overnight? Does VW ever plan to offer the e-Golf in Florida?
I would go for the gti, and economy is an issue convert it to LPG gas for £2000 or $3000.
Ev's are good, but the price for what you get is tooooooo expensive. Just think how long it will take to recoup the extra price on gas.
For me to buy an e-golf, I would want to get 250 mphe, a price under $25000 and a charge time of 10minutes max ( silmilar to how long it take to diesel up. I also want to be able to tow up to 990 lbs with it.
The electric car must be just a little bit more expensive than a diesel for it to make sense and be attractive to buyers. Further more there has to be a proper charger infrastructure. With the current batteries excluding the Tesla electric cars go on a full charge around 100 miles/ 140Km so that's just well and dandy for 80% of the time when you just loft around the city, but you don't really want to be stuck at that range forever. Supercharging is interesting but let's face it you don't want to stop every 100 miles to charge you car when you are doing long trips. So you need the extra range so that it inspires confidence. To sum up: More range, supercharging mode, less price difference.
More range and lower price will sell EVs, pretty simple. Oh and less odd ugly box designs as well.

I do wish the would've brought over the GTE or even the GTD for a more sporty eco car though….. but then you have both drive trains to service and you don't get the service savings of a full EV.
I do not agree with your speculations about the motivations of Prius buyers. Prius buyers are motivated by hi MPG numbers. Inadequate headroom kept me from considering a Prius. I was not crazy about Prius's poor handling. But I considered a Prius because of high MPG expectations. (By the way, the Prius is a hybrid, not an EV.)

Many people (probably most) buy the Prius for the combination of MPG, passenger space and price in spite of the looks not because of the looks.
There is not another car that has the same amount of passenger space and fuel economy and hatchback cargo room for this price.

I was gonna warn you about Virginia state troopers, but you beat me to it lol ... I got a relative there , I heard the stories.
What it takes me to consider an EV? Mmmm
- The Flexibility & Range of an ICE car ... 2 days ago I pulled up to a Gas Station, gained 245 miles of range in less than a minute ... 130 miles later ... i still have about half of tank ... if an EV can charge that quick, then i might get interested.
- The price factor, they are too expensive for what they are ... i mean 35k (Euro btw) for a Non-Luxury-Brand compact car is a lot ! I'd add 2k USD & get a loaded ATS V6 or the new C ... or a 392 SRT (Jeep not included)
- The Heat factor, the hot weather can damage the battery & powertrain ... this part worries me a lot.
- Then, there's the expenses issue (we kinda talked about this in Grand Cherokee Diesel & Pathfinder Hybrid videos) ... here, the Fuel is cheap & the electricity is more expensive in comparison ...
And frankly, I hate charging stuff up ... I'm charging both my Surface & my phone & I'm after I'm done, if have to charge my laptop & ipod lol
Will I buy an EV ? No, Not In their current form ... maybe in 4~5 generations when the technology gets significantly better & all my concerns are addressed, only then I might reconsider.

wow. I find it astonishing that people really only care about themselves and the immediate expense to their wallets. What about the long-term costs for buying ICE vehicles? And, I'm not referring to maintenance, mechanical, etc. The adverse affects of ICE vehicles to the environment is self-evident. Your children and their children will pay the highest price. Auto manufacturers have to charge more for the vehicle upfront, because they will make far less down the road from parts sales. I ask everyone what is clean air worth to you? apparently not much.

At this point pure EVs, with few exceptions, are not a suited to be your sole car. Not even the Tesla with its extended range and relatively short charging times. (I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area and there are at least a dozen Teslas in my immediate neighborhood and I don't believe that any are a sole car for the owners).
Remember that when gas automobiles first hit the roads a little over a 100 years ago people just didn't abandon their horses. They had a car and a horse. Get an EV for its dramatically lower fuel, maintenance, and insurance costs and keep your gas machine for those two hundred mile trips. Chances are you will use the EV for most occasions.
$25,000 (after Federal and state tax incentives) is not a bad deal.
I wound up buying the 2015 TDI SE. @ 26,300. Price was right and I'm getting 40 City and 52 Hwy so the question is why get the EV with very limited range unless you really want to be as close to Green as possible. Power plants pollute so and EV is not 100% Green. I decide to go with the mileage aspect and flexibility of not being tied to a wire.
They don't pollute if you have solar panels on your roof to charge them or if the power plant is a windmill or solar farm
I commute 120 miles a day into Manhattan. My Prius was getting me 46 mpg. I loved the mileage but horrible ride and the tranny blows. I traded prius for VW Jetta hybrid. Im doing 39-41 mpg. Its a little less but i knew that. I now am interested in this all electric but i would like more mpg per charge. Guess i need to wait a few years for improvements on battery life. Its a great start tho.

You have the patience of the Amish . . . and if I am doing my math correct, probably live close to them:)

I think that the ultimate goal is to have them be able to drive all day and be able to charge in minutes. That's what we want!
It would take quite a bit to get me to drive an EV.
200+ horsepower and a lower price tag would be a good place to start.
When (not if) I'll buy me a EV, it for sure will be Tesla. That's the only (still) car that can go all the kilometers (or miles) I want to drive on a single charge.
But I'm sure all the others, like e-Golf, e-Focus and Nissan LEAF are very good cars.

Just lol of that 80 mile distance. I love EV's but Tesla can do with their design 300miles which is like 500km which is mileage that makes me want to buy it. For 80miles and 10 grands expensive than 300mile gasoline variant is no deal for EV version.

What would it take for me to buy an EV ? The hope that fewer moving parts translates into fewer visits to the dealership. The hope that, if and when I do have to go to the dealership, that it is much easier and cheaper to repair.

Electric Golf should at least cost less than the normal Golf. That is the main reason.

+damien Gagne Bang on man. I would have bought an ev years ago if they were designed properly and basically did not look like shiate! Thankfully Tesla started making beautiful evs and finally we have some (small) improvements from the others. My next vehicle is a Tesla.
All EVs except Tesla and Nissan are over-priced so manufacturers can say "there is no demand for EVs" and carry on making ICE cars forever.

I'm in a new 2015 e-golf for $15,400 after all the tax credits and state rebates, before taxes. How is that overpriced? Want to guess what I'll save on fuel in this E-golf ? I am averaging 5.5 miles per KWH. I pay $0.158 per KWH. 100 kwh costs me $15.80. 100 Kwh sends me down the road 550 miles. And that's when I have to pay for the electricity to recharge, which being retired, I rarely do. 15.80 / 550 miles is $0.02873 per mile. Go check what your fuel expenses are now with gas in your car.
What would make me buy an EV? .... Well i bought a BMW i3 BEV which should be delivered in May :).
VW is blowing out 2015's to make room for the 2016's. With my VW Owner Loyalty $2000 credit, and $2500 CA rebate, and $7500 Federal tax credit (if you have enough income tax to get the full $7500), I bought in at $15,400 before taxes and registration fees (varies from state to state), in Early October 2015. Deals are out there to be had, VW wants your business right now. E-Golf SEL, MSRP $36,300 VW is NOT losing money on these, there are far, far far less moving parts on it, far less to wear out, one speed gear box, versus complex 6 speed DSG, electric motors are dirt cheap to make compared to Internal combustion motors, and there is ZERO additional smog equipment on it also. Assembly time is far less too. VW will probably get a 3 to 4 year run out of this model for full R&D payback on this model. Open your eyes and look at the big picture.
70 to 90 miles a joke; normal drivers in California need a range around 250 to 300. Once manufacturer make it available, I believe ev vehicles will be more popular.
You could get me into an electric car easily. I love the Model S, Spark EV (400lbft of torque) and the volt. I'd never buy a VW because their long term reliability is so hit or miss.
i'd buy an ev if i could fully recharge the battery in 5 minutes and would give me at least 150 miles range per charge
What would it take for me to buy an EV?
1. Most importantly, IT MUST BE REAR WHEEL DRIVE!!
2. Less than $20,000. Maximum $25k.
3. Lexus like reliability.
4. Weight of less than 1000 kgs.
5. The 5-door hatchback body of the e-Golf would be a perfect bonus.

irrespective of the make/model of an EV, I'm going to wait until the range is high enough to reduce the charging frequency to once every 3/4 days.
If you want to buy one forever, that's a good idea. But for now, leasing is also smart too if you just need something around a city and have some form of charging at home.

As with all things electric, there is a premium to pay. Now we all know that running costs of an EV when compared to an ICE are very low, and the distance/time required to break even varies from model to model., but the thing we have to take into consideration is the fossil fuels are from a finite resource while there are many ways to generate electricity. So what I'm saying is this: If you care more for your pocket and your convenience buy a ICE car, but if you care about the environment and what sort of world you're going to bequeath to your children and grandchildren, you pay the extra and buy an EV. Your grandchildren may have no choice, so it's down to today's car driver/owner to make sure that the inevitable is relatively painless.

They make this car just to show they can , but dont want to sell too much because they know this car will not come back in service too much and they will not earn money .... for this money isn't worth ...
Only way I could see myself buying a New EV such as this is if they offered incentives simular to Home Solar, 80% tax credit (Fed. &St. Combined) otherwise why buy a new vehicle to save a few bucks on gas, I'll just keep driving my old paid for Civic and Accord, and continue to pay myself towards retirement!
Is the $35K price before the $7500 federal tax incentive? If so $27500 is much more palatable and depending on what state you live in there are other EV tax breaks that can bring the price down further. Clearly performance wise this does not compare to the GTi, but cost wise after tax incentives and lower maintenance cost the EV would be cheaper and better for the environment. I wouldn't compare it to the GTi though, more the Leaf, and being a car guy, I would rather drive the eGolf than a Leaf. I would still need to change the wheels and tires though, I would give up some range to improve the style. This current batch of EVs is great, but I am going to wait for the 2016 cars which are supposed to have double the range and increased performance (plus a redesigned Leaf body). The Tesla Model S is amazing but too much money, I am hoping the Model 3 is worth waiting for.
The US$35,000 is before the tax credit.

The auto industry will fight the transition to all electric for another 100 years. just like concept cars that never see mass production, no car manufacturer is actually interested in selling all electric cars unless they can charge enough to justify the loss in long-term parts sales.People should expect to pay double for a car now, but get to keep it for twice as long at a fraction of the expense to maintain it. Getting to drive for two pennies per mile is not half bad, either.
