Mirror heating is turned ON if its below 5'C degrees automatically, and also you can activate it with heating back glass heating so no need to leave the knob on heating.

I have the US version of the e-Golf. Regarding your 12 (actually 13) list of issues:
    1) Get OBDEleven and program the auto-lock customization.
    2) Yes, ECO tires are the main culprit.
    3) As you've pointed out, the car was designed for the complexity of an engine + transmission and hence the extra space.
    4) In the US, only the top of the line version has the heat pump.
    5) I thought it was fine. You can also use OBDEleven to program your keyless remote to raise/lower all the windows from outside the vehicle, so you don't have to hear the noise.
    6) All US versions come with smart key, so no turn of a physical key.
    7) It's to preserve range and battery draw when the voltage is lower (and you do the most battery damage).
    8) Never experimented. I'm not in freezing weather, so the seat heaters (standard in US) do fine.
    9) We do have CarNet in the US, but no annoying message on the screen.
    10) Maybe affix a battery LED tap light onto the fuel door?
    11) Agreed, although I'd accept the front only and get rid of the rear.
    12) At least you have mirror dip and folding mirrors. US models don't get that option on any trim.
    13) Parking brake?

You can actually program the mirror dip in OBD as well

Hi, I had a Golf GTE before swapping to my E-Golf last November. The thing that gets me is the number of clicks, on both sides of the steering wheel, it takes to select/switch to the Speed Limiter. I'm sure it was a lot simpler (and therefore safer) in the GTE. Otherwise I agree with most of your comments. Thanks for the great channel.

Must add that your videos are vastly more helpful than the dealer who only gave us 80 miles of range for the 110 mile trip home over the Cascades range in Oregon. We limped up the pass with 2 charging stops then sailed the last 30 miles off of regen taking until 4:00 am to reach home.

I've never had the 'Carnet' message and my car doesn't go forward 3 inches when I release the foot brake. It's as solid as a rock every time.
One thing I absolutely love is the quiet. Low volume music / audiobook or a quiet conversation are both lovely.
My driving is normally done in Eco+ with Regen on B. The best range I've ever had (twice) is 175 miles (Summer) and the worst about 120 (Winter). Miles per KWh varying between sub-3 and 6. I blame my son, for putting on the heating when a coat would suffice.
I've never noticed the electric window noise being loud but my previous car was a Punto. As regards the dipping mirror, I usually have it heated well before parking up. Heated front and rear screens is wonderful in addition to heating the interior when it's at zero outside.
The one thing that grates my cheese is the tyre valve placement. Many pressure gauges won't fit between the spokes and a screw-on inflator is a nightmare. I have one with a lever clamp which works well for me and an accutire pressure gauge manages the gap nicely. I have 5 gauges now and only two work in the space (one is an analogue stick).
I like the 'WeConnect' app but I would love a remote lock / unlock functionality.
With two passengers and luggage and all energy saving off, she really flies along roads - hugging the tarmac beautifully. She takes off like a scalded cat.
    Love my e-Golf.

Another great EV video Steve. All valid points about the eGolf. Somethings I have picked up:
    2. I have the 17’’ wheels with Dunlop tyres which seem to handle the road a bit better
    4. Heat Pump is a must in an EV. I won’t have bought the Golf without one given the battery capacity
    7. Key turn is shocking. The first car I’ve had in 10 years where start button wasn’t on standard model
    9. Carnet message - Cracks me up every time but made me laugh when you brought it up
    11. Agree that the charging port location is not ideal. I have went to use on street parking a few times but couldn’t due to port on the wrong side for UK vehicles
Other point: Auto dipping headlights would be ideal as standard as is in a number of other EVs at similar price point
Stay safe and keep making great videos - Chris

Got my eGolf today, first electric car. To share my 1-day experiences:
    First impression: Love it.
Then i got home, started charging. Later that day i went out in the garage trying to set up all kinds of personalization, map updates and whatnot. Tried to turn on the heating but it just got colder (8C outside). Was fearing that the heat pump thing was not working. Unplugging the charger and "starting up the engine" was the trick.
The information system should have told me that "you are trying to put on heat, but nooo - you need to start the engine. Aaaand you need to disconnect the charger to start the engine". Anyway, not big deal, just a peculiarity for new users. Also - this is my first electric car, i struggled with how to disconnect the charger, lol. Ok, so just press unlock on the key and it will come out easilly.
From my experience, these are the two advices (so far) i have to give :)

We own a e golf when you go on about the wheels spinning I agree with you,And since we changed the alloy wheels we don’t get that spinning wheels at low speed,
Also the heat pump does make a difference ,The keyless entry is brilliant so no more having to put the key in egnition,I have never had the car jilting forward when we park up,I would say get the car looked at mate because our 19 plate has never done that,Also when battery is at 31 miles remaining it runs normally but it will then go to slow mode at 10 miles of battery remaining anything over 10 miles battery it runs without restrictions,

So here in America, I own a Ford Crown Victoria police interceptor which is rear-wheel drive by the way and the Goodyear Egle RSA police pursuit tires that came with the car were absolutely horrible in the rain they were hard and worn the right rear tire which was worn the most would always spin in the rain even with like the tiniest bit of gas. I replaced the horrible police pursuit tires in the rear with some normal Goodyear all-season tires. The problem went away instantly you actually have to try to get the wheels to spin on the wet pavement now. Also, these type of incidents makes me really triggered and makes me want to scream OPEN DIFFERENTIALS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL ON ANY AND ALL CARS AND TRUCKS!!! DIFFERENTIALS ARE THE BIGGEST PAIN IN THE ASS WHEN IT COMES TO TRACTION!!! Id honestly rather have an RWD car with a solid axle with no differential and have the tires chirp and skip around a turn and have to replace them more often than be stuck in the snow, revving my engine cooking my transmission trying to get unstuck because some stupid idiot designed this stupid thing that makes a 2wd car technically 1wd!!! Then again there would more stress and strain on the drivetrain and transmission with a solid axle. Well, that's an easy fix just make the parts stronger. As in your case though why doesn't Volkswagen even tesla for that matter make their EVs with a separate motor for each wheel? No stupid differential needed! At least Tesla's have a viscous limited-slip differential in their newer models. Still, the Volkswagen e-golf doesn't necessarily need AWD but it could have 2 separate motors for 2 of either the front or rear wheels, whichever axle has more weight for the best traction. I think the e-golf is rear heavy because of the big battery and the front is light or lighter so that's why you get so many wheelspins. Which is funny considering how FWD cars are known for being better in wet conditions then RWD cars but that only applies to gas cars which have the engine in the front in the e-golf there is no engine in the front except the electric motor and all the electronics under the hood which are far lighter than the big battery in the rear.

I have a Canada-spec 2018 eGolf. Heat pump is standard! Car-Net? Volkswagen can't even be bothered to provide that here. As gripes I would add: - no heated steering wheel. VW has it in the parts bin and they did fit a heated windshield. Steering wheel? Not so much. Auto folding mirrors (in the Golf parts bin) - not even an eGolf option. - no visual charge status indicator that can be seen from the outside. I have to wake the eGolf up to see what the range is or how much charging time is left. That's poor.
I particularly agree with you pointing out the lack of a charging port light (ridiculous) and the placement of the charging port. Front would be more practical.

    Hi there,
I also use an e-Golf. I got a 2020 model and I have been using it for 6 months now.
1-) Auto lock feature: I never had this feature but I do think its a MUST have. I forgot to lock my car a few times. You can lock it via de app but its super slow and sometimes fails. It takes me like up to 10 minutes to lock the door via de app because I need to refresh alot and it takes alot of time eventough I got the newest phone and best 4G connection. I did hear that they will release a faster app soon (because of the ID.3). I am talking about WeConnect.
2-) Wheel slipping: I am used to it now. If its rainy or snowy I dont press the pedal like a maniac. I just build up speed slowly by pressing my foot slowly. I didnt have any slips since then. I did almost had a car crash tough when I slipped once. It was in the beginning. I slipped at a red light and the car went 20meters further while my light was red. Terrifying expierence!
3-) Engine roam: Its because they copied and pasted it from the normal Golf. There was no enginering involved into make e-Golf really. Thats why they created the ID.3. A real EV. But I dont really mind this because the back has plenty of roam for a hatchback.
4-) Heat pomp: I didnt get this option. It costs alot of money. Too bad its not standard
5-) Eletric Window noise: I dont mind the Window noise
6-) Key turning: I dont have any problem with this lol
7-) Eco Mode: I dont have any issue with it either.
8-) Lying Temp: I never had airconditining before. I never use it though. So I think ur point is very valid. Because when I turn it on for example 22 degrees its still blows cool air like crazy.
9-) Carnet message: This is annoying yes!
10-) Charge port light: I dont seem to have this issue really. I can see it perfectly fine.
11-) Charge port location: Its on a very wierd location for EV indeed!
12-) Mirror: I never even used the dip

Brilliant 🙏..I’ve owned my 2017 since Feb 2018 (brand new ) yes I hate no auto lock ..I also hate the wheel spin. There is a routine trip I take each week amd just before the stop sign is this sewer grate ..and you guessed it , if I touch the brakes I slide and almost go through the stop sign into the middle of the street . I’ve driven cars since 1979 and never had this happen .

Valid points there Steve. I had a Golf GTD so that dislocated wrist thing is familiar to me. Those heated mirrors that don't work like they should also baffled me. I assume that when the mirrors fold in when the car's locked you can't see the 'alarm set' led on that model either. Who came up with that idea? Looks like your Golf uses the same engine coolant header tank as my new Skoda Superb given that I have as much coolant all over my engine as you appear to have 😆 At least things in the VW group are consistent

Our '19 e-Golf has the Bridgestones as well and they chirp some on dry pavement. We use this car less in winter and back off some in the rain so can't complain much about traction. If we used it in the snow would probably go with a taller, slightly narrower tire. We did this on our Civic Hybrid and it help clearance and reduced torque slightly - of course it didn't have over 200 ft/lbs like the Golf.

Thank you EV Steve for the informative videos. I loved your eGolf v Tesla comparison. We also own a Tesla and almost purchased a used 2019 eGolf on Carvana (in 2021), but changed our mind after seeing where the charge port was located. I also wish that VW had a charge port in the front because having the charge port on the passenger side (in the USA) was not going to work in our small garage. Ugh.

Yes yes and bloody yes. I’ve got a heat pump and to be honest the range is similar to what you stated. The Welcome User message is more annoying as I typically use car-play and it blacks out the car-play screen rather than displaying over it. My other two would be: why does the boot not shut cleanly every time (I’ve come from an Audi) and why isn’t there a tray under the boot floor to help with aerodynamics?! As it is the rear bumper just acts like a big parachute.

  • @jgnmtz

My biggest beef with the egolf is starting it. Here in USA we have the fob and keyless start . But you must press hard on the brake and then press the start key .. well, what a lovely and grand idea .. IT only works 40% of the time on the first try. You have to do it again 60% of the time. Plus there are about 10% of those when you have to do all the steps a third time because hitting the start sometimes will set the car in EPC mode on the dial ..hit the start again turns car off. Then you hit it a third time amd the charge dial turns all the way up to on and lights are functioning..

If you have keyless entry auto lock can be coded using e.g. OBD11. In denmark heatpump is standard. :-)
My worst is the noice from steering in cold weather. (And really my only real complaint). A 2nd front charge port would be nice, and 60kwh battery. But I love it as is.
(And due to no tax on electric cars in denmark the e-golf is the cheapest Golf you can buy in denmark ~ e-golf 31000 eur, cheapest fossilfuel ~37500 eur).

Some of the points are probably a bit picky, but my experience is:
No WTF moment occurs when putting it into park and letting foot off the brake. Not heard of that one before.
Gesture control is a bit pointless.
My CarNet works fine, and I have two stored settings paired to my phone, and my house wi-fi when I'm parked. I have the larger screen and Discover Navigation Pro though. Don't know if this is different on other models.
My auto lock works fine (I have keyless entry).
Agree about the temp feeling as though it is about 3 or 4 degrees out, indicating warmer than it is.
No issue with eco-mode coming on. It's 'self-protection', and if you haven't got Sat-Nav on, it isn't going to know you are 15 miles from home. Dead easy to change modes back to normal.
Charging point light. Absolutely. I've used my phone light a number of times, even on my own drive(!)
Heat pump. Yes, they should all have them on for efficiency, but, horses for courses. My commute (was) of 60 miles, but got to charge for free at work, so never an issue with range etc. This is a car originally launched back in 2016, so I guess it's that year's tech.
Frunk - you wouldn't get much of a frunk in there, and unless they rearranged the gear under the bonnet, it would be an odd shape. It is a converted standard vehicle after all, rather than a from the ground built EV. I would therefore not expect this.
I don't really have any gripes with mine - I actually love this car. You can get a lower cost introduction on the 2nd hand market to EVC driving (as I did), and it is a joy to drive (even with the odd wheel spin!)
Despite it's limited range, I've used it as my everyday commuter, and have embarked on long trips with very few issues. It's dead reliable, you don't have to do anything to maintain it (other than consumables like tyres, brakes, brake fluid and screen wash!)

Steve, Hope you and your family is well and remains well! 1. Autolock - My e-Golf has keyless entry and it does auto lock if you only open the hatch with the key in your pocket. I remember is auto locking after removing the charge plug after it sat overnight (but my memory is a bit fuzzy on that - I need to look in the manual). 2. Wheelspin - yes, but I'm willing to live with the low rolling resistance Bridgestone Ecopia (e-Golf bespoke model) tires for good fuel economy. I agree software could be better. ID.3 will be rear wheel drive and should be much better. 3. Yes, no frunk though there should be. 4. I purchased the very rare 2017 e-Golf LE to get the heat pump (I was told 3 of this trim were imported into the US before VW killed off the trim). Heat pump should be standard, I agree. 5. Yes, my windows make noise, too. I don't mind it. :-) 6. No key turn for me since VW made keyless start standard in US. 7. I am ok with ECO mode at 31 miles, since I usually drive in ECO mode anyway, which helps to reduce wheelspin since ECO mode cuts about 20 hp from motor. 7. I agree with temp but I just adjust as necessary. 9. I don't get carnet messages. Didn't get it with my 2015 e-Golf either. Must be an EU thing. 10. I agree there should be a charge port light. 11. Agree not best position of charge port. Should be in front of driver door, IMO, like a Bolt EV or I-PACE. I think two ports would increase costs but would be nice. 12. My mirrors don't dip yet - I need to enable this through OBDEleven. 13. I always put parking brake on after putting car in park and before I remove my foot from the brake pedal. Other things I don't like: a. Locking plug in charge port when charging is done. VW should have provided an option to unlock when charging is done. b. Software issue that makes average economy calculation wrong since it does not include first stint after charging (doesn't always happen). c. Don't like that climate control always resets to 72 F (VW changed this for free in my 2015 but said it can't be done for my 2017). d. Why can't it remember driving mode? I always drive in ECO mode and every time I get in the car I need to select ECO mode. But, overall, a great car. I love it. Cheers!

Hi Steve, like your videos, greetings from Germany!
My thoughts about your negative points about the e-Golf (I drive a 2020 e-Golf and really like it. 60 kWh battery would be great. Apart from that a great car! Love it!)
Auto lock when you leave the car: I have never been used to it, so I don‘t miss it
Wheel spin: The Bridgestone tires I got on the 16 Inch standard wheels could be more sticky, yes, but I guess they have also a low rolling resistance. Conflict of goals. I‘m looking forward to compare them with the handling and energy consumption on winter tires (Goodyear Ultra GRIP)
Frunk: Would be nice to have for stowing the charging equipment
Nose charging: Would be nice, I guess inLHD cars the charging plug on the right side is not that issue...
Temp gauge: I always, really always and in all Cars I drive, have set the climate control on 22 degrees celsius in Auto mode and A/C on. Think I never changed it since I picked up the car... I always feel comfortable. Fun fact: Maybe the 22 should not mean degrees Celsius. It’s just a value. You only guess it is. I cannot find „Celsius“ on the panel or in the display... yeah, hair-splitting, I know
WTF parking: You don‘t drive with auto hold ON, do you? When it‘s activated the parking brake closes when the ignition is switched off.
Turning the ignition key: That is why I ordered Keyless in all Golf 7 without exception. I hate that turning move using this new standard vw key since the launch of the Golf MK7.
Keep it up, Steve! Waitng for new videos :-)

I have two primary issues with my EGolf in the first world. 1: Lockdown as the weathers warmed up so I’ve not seen the range benefits yet as most I chanced was 80 miles (from a 95 range). 2: Car net and Apple don’t auto connect. So I have to manually go in and connect to my phone each time if I want to use the data features. Even if it’s plugged in by cable... I find that incredibly frustrating and I just don’t do it. I’m not sure if that’s a car issue or if it is Apple that don’t allow it to auto connect to hotspot wifi networks. If anyone has a solution that would be ace!
Another slight bug issue for me is the charge point locations not being built into the mapping data. Though petrol stations are 🤦🏻‍♂️. Admittedly I wouldnt use them anyway as I like to use Zap-Map so I can find the most cost effective one to use on my route and I navigate direct to that point rather than waypoint it. I am envious of the Tesla navigation (amongst other things). I just can’t afford that car 😕

I hate the fact that the fuel door locks and freezes shut in the winter. No need to lock the door if the cable gets locked into place when charging (and that solenoid freezes up too!) - Canada problems. We get a std heat pump though.
My other beef - sometimes I go to switch modes and turn the car off while it's moving down the road because I hit the wrong button...that's nuts!

I never understood why Volkswagens have a special position for mirror heating. All other cars that I've had turn the mirror heat on when rear window heat is turned on. I think that makes a lot of sense and that also allows you to use the mirror dip function when heating the mirrors. My last car (not latest, last since I'll never buy a car again) had the mirror dip on both mirrors. The selected one would dip when transmission was set to reverse.

Brilliant about the heat pump.. don’t get me started about the short range haha.. mine is ‘rated ‘ at 125 miles in USA . But freeway miles that’s about 85-95. We drive 75 mph here in CA. I’ve gone to weddings 90 miles away and had to play ‘slow down ‘ and ‘get behind the slowest truck’ in order to regenerate miles to get home on. There is nobody who is going to come out and ‘recharge’ a dead ev here. Most EV’s are over 200 miles now and I can’t get the ID4 because the price jumped to $60,000 in the pandemic . My egolf costs $32,000 ..I leased with $0 down $1500 for license and registration..$360/month. The federal govt paid $7,500 and my state paid $2,500 .. so I paid net $22,000 . Insane to pay $60k for just 140 more miles IMO

Got mine today! Love it :D ....i was in my garage charging and at the same time trying to set up all kinds of personalization, map updates and whatnot.
Good luck!
From my experience, these are the two advices i have to give :)

    I have a 2017 e-Golf SE US version and love the car. Here is how your list compares;
Auto lock - I too come from a car that would auto lock, but with the e-Golf I just touch the handle and it locks or unlocks (with fob in pocket) so not a concern.
Wheel spin - I have spun the tires a total of three times so far. Just a gentler press will solve the problem.
Frunk - I think VW doesn't want you in the engine compartment. I think it impressive how small the propulsion system is.
Heat pump - Totally agree, VW cheaped out on that. My Canadian friends get one, but in the US you have to get the SEL model. Still it does make the car toasty.
Electric Window Noise - usually the car is moving when opening or closing windows so the wind noise mask the sound of the motors. Not a concern.
Excessive Key Turn - Okay VW really cheaped out or is it some type of regulation in UK? In the states we are keyless to lock, unlock and start the motor.
Poor Eco Mode Choices - The few times I have gotten that low on charge I was appreciative of the system trying to squeeze all the range. I never trust the range indicator and living in mtn country the numbers can vary wildly.
Lying Temp Gauge - Auto mode works remarkably well, although I have no idea how accurate the setting is to the number. I just know that 71 F seems to be idea setting for year round use. It more life my Fujitsu mini split where the temp numbers don't actually represent what the room temperature will be.
Car-net Message - Full version included for a limited time then it dumbs down to a few basic options, unless you subscribe. The app has gone from being useful to not worth using. I suspect one day it will stop working altogether.
No Charge Port Light - That was a big miss for VW. A simple LED lamp would have been wonderful. A bigger indicator light would have been nice too.
Dual Charge Port - While I don't have an issue with the current port position, placing it upfront would have meant shorter cable harness thus saving VW some money. Dual port would be nice but then you'd have the issue of interlocks to prevent some fool from trying to use both ports at the same time. More software and hardware requirements probably why you don't see dual port in EV.
Hot Mirror Don't Dip - On the SE I don't get any dip, but we do have rear-view camera and my neck swivels.
WTF Parking - Manual states to apply brake, set e-brake, then shift to park.
    Thanks for sharing your experience.

    • @brettbaffa8652
      @brettbaffa8652 3 ปีที่แล้ว

So in using your e brake first, you are using your brakes to put the car in park. If you shift the car to park first, your using your transmission to park the car. and it will put pressure on your cars trany. For example, have you ever parked on a hill and you put the car into reverse or into drive and you hear and feel the car go THUNK, and it shifts into gear reallllly hard. it is because in putting the car in park before setting the e brake, you made the car park with the transmission instead of the brakes so all that load gets put onto the clutch inside the transmission instead of using your brakes. using your brakes to park the car will save you money (ALOT) and the potential problem of having transmission problems. To give some more reference. In a manual car there is no "Park". You essentially use the parking brake as your mode for park. I have seen some people set the break and then put it back into first. But its could potentially ruin the trans if you turn on the car with your car in first. Hope that clears up alot!!!

    • @cfldriven
      @cfldriven 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@brettbaffa8652 When parking manual the procedure is set parking, shift to reverse, shut off engine, release cluck, and finally remove foot off brake. Reverse ratio better then 1st gear.

My only gripes with the car are 1) When auto hand brake is engaged and you come to a standstill in traffic and take your foot off the foot brake it leaves the brake lights on blinding the car behind. This is contrary to best practice in the Highway Code. 2) The remote app is flaky and in some respects doesn't work at all. 3) Remote Tyre pressures only show a warning when there is a significant drop in pressure, would like to know what the tyre pressures are whenever I want to. Other than those its a fabulous car. I don't care it doesn't have a frunk, got a big enough boot. Optioned the key less entry so touch the door handle to lock the car and no putting the key into the ignition to start. Optioned the heat exchanger (£800) so virtually no loss of mileage with heating. I tend to drive to the road conditions so no flooring in wet / icy weather, yes there is occasionally a modicum of wheel spin but the traction control quickly recovers it. Rocking forward when in park, I use the auto hand brake / put the handbrake on before releasing the foot brake, any Automatic car would do this. Tilting mirror; I use the mirror heater when its needed and switch it off or back to L (Tilt in reverse) when the ice has cleared. The chance of mirrors still being frosty by the time I first parallel park has never happened. Drop in power under 31 miles and then Eco+ at 15(?) is probably a battery preserving measure so I would rather that than quicker battery degradation. For me Heat Exchanger, Keyless Entry, Driver Assist, Matrix Headlights (hit a deer and had to replace one @£1,300 + labour!), LCD dashboard / instruments are must have options but I do realize they add significant cost to the vehicle.

Personally, I do like the frunk on the e-golf because I just like to see all the mechanical stuff under the hood and all the boxes, the traction motor, and all the orange high voltage cables and high voltage warning signs. It just gives me a rush of dopamine almost as if there was an engine there. The tesla just has too much innovation for my taste especially on the square steering wheel in the new redesign and with their self-driving cars, I hate them even more. Well, first of all, I'm not into electric cars I like engines but I just like simple normal-looking electric cars (like the e-golf and leaf) not some crazy futuristic-looking prototype with a joystick I hate that it's just to much for me. I don't even think self-driving cars, as well as those futuristic-looking show-off prototypes with joysticks and square steering wheels, will ever be legal or for at least the next 30 years. There need to be drastic changes in laws to allow them on roads. As a matter of a fact, Tesla is now in trouble with federal motor vehicle safety agencies for their square steering wheel prototype.

      No.
And unfortunately, even with the clear images I was able to get, the police couldn’t identify them.
They tried about 20-30 cars and another neighbour actually got the Reg of the car they came in but that was inconclusive too.

All of those reasons were not fair and not very important for all people the most important thing is the range of KM but don't forget that Tesla is much more expensive than e Golf PLUS VW doesn't make every option in one model cus they will lose their sells in another models like GTE petrol and diesel cars but Tesla has only electic cars
