The only reason Melee gets big viewers is for Smash hype, and only a VERY small percentage of them care that it's Melee specifically. The 'lost viewers' won't be lost at all; they'll just be watching Ultimate instead. The only people who genuinely care about this are the 10 people that still play Melee.

@Luca Antinori That's easy. The input lag is 3x as bad in Ultimate as it is in Melee. There are way more broken mechanics despite people complaining about Melee mechanics. Too many characters have counters and they last too damn long. They removed force shielding so zoners are way more irritating to deal with. It doesn't have anywhere near the same fluidity of movement, the buffer system helps a little but it's still not comparable to the level of control you get in Melee.

See I feel for the melee community that their game is no longer at evolution because they had to fight for so long with the rest of the fighting game Community to recognize their game as a competitive game. But nowadays melee gets this bad rap that people seem to Shadow it because of the people who get angry about stuff that happens to smash melee like it was unfair. Smash melee had its time in the Limelight ultimate is here and should take its place I think it is worthy of taking its place as an excellent game with excellent mechanics and amazing ways of entertaining audiences that's all that matters especially to the people who run evolution. The melee Community needs to learn how to grow up and learn that you can't just play one game the rest of your life and expect it to last forever. You look at streamers like nairo and zero and ESAM and realize they've moved on making their streams and content more varied and they play different games and build a community instead of just relying on reputation in smash melee. the smash melee Community is big enough to live on its own now without Evo and can continue to thrive as long as it wants but the competitive world will move on with or without the salty players

I think all of them have grounds for being angry or frustrated, the logic to remove Melee isn't really sound. The game pulls in a massive crowd both live at the stage as well as online and hasn't had a bad decline. I don't see what doesn't qualify it for EVO and I myself don't even play smash or follow the scene that closely. I think it was Hugs that was trying to say something that with less emotion behind it, which was that it'd make more sense if Melee was getting replaced by some other massive game/brand/franchise but those two games don't really cut close at all. To elaborate on this point, the only logic I can see or accept here is that they don't wanna have two Smash games. But again I would only agree with this if EVO's line up was actually so saturated to the point where melee and ultimate would take too much space. The two games in here don't really do justice for that argument. It's fair if EVO wants to try something new, but then imo out of all these games it makes the least sense to pick Melee, if you wanted to introduce a new or bigger audience, why would you cut one of your largest, off. Again I'm mostly speaking from a company type of view, as a company or tourney provider, this is a really fkn weird move from EVO. I personally don't mind their decision, since I don't follow Melee as closely as prob do. You have to remember. This is a game almost two decades old, which requires rare out dated equipment to play optimally, and there's a new entry in the same series. I was extremely excited for it too, but it was a disappointment in the end. We all have our preferences when it comes to fighting games, but a FIGHTING game that holds your hand through and through just isn't worthy of being called a true fighting game.

They just don't deserve to have those missteps highlighted over the only game that really made EVO matter over the past five or so years.
Good thing most SF fans knew how to move on, granted Capcom taught them how by essentially releasing updated versions of the same game as if it were new. The melee community doesn't need to move on. They just have to accept that they were never entitled to have a spot at EVO. It was earned and other games are meant to earn their spot. Melee did a lot for the FGC and EVO can always honor it in ways other than holding tournaments for it. Melee is fortunate enough to have such a consistent run at EVO and they should be grateful people decided to keep holding tournaments for it post Smash 4... and if I remember correctly, Smash 4 almost didn't make it to EVO because of Nintendo. Imagine possibly having zero semblance of a Smash presence at the biggest fighting game tournament of the year.

NetherRealm is in the lineup. So is Smash. SonicFox, an NRS player has played anime fighters, and has also shown interest in smash ultimate. JWong has shown interest in Smash Ultimate. Melee has been in the roster for years. Why can't other games get a chance? Unist being at Evo has brought the game a lot of new fans and exposure that the game really needed since its so underappreciated. Melee is a good game but all good things come to an end, it would be unreasonable to expect melee to be at evo forever. Especially with how well smash ultimate is doing. They no longer need 2 smash games in the roster.

@Goliath Online well i've always been a melee fan, got all into the mythology and events and stuff, but I also really like anime fighters, especially all of french bread's stuff. Its just sad the behavior of big name melee personalities in response to this, especially since french bread games have only got to where they were with a community so similar to melee's in it's close knit and die hard nature. Like, i remember when the first under night trailer came out and french bread literally only had melty blood, a fan game, that was well known to their name at the time. Now it's got a place next to effing street fighter on the mainstage. And the worst part is melee doesnt even suffer from this. The most popular melee tournament was definitely evo, but the community organizes the majority of melee tournaments themselves independent of any leagues, so melee only dies if all the melee players just get sucked into smash ultimate. Melee players didnt even really like the evo tournament rules, and it was always the least satisfactory melee tournament, it was FAR more about the exposure than the tourney it self.
@Goliath Online on top of this, to say that ultimate is challenging melee is an understatement. Literally every high end melee player is playing ultimate casually, at the very least, and in my area melee players havent even touched it since ultimate dropped.

I like Ultimate as well, but damn, people really don't bother to bring setups to locals where I live. A well developed meta =/= boring/bad. All games have tiers, including Ultimate. Characters like Kirby or lil' Mac are actually bad relative to rest of the cast. Just because you apparently think melee is boring to watch, and seem happy to see it kicked out of Evo, doesn't take away from the fact that melee is a very popular title that a lot of people love.

As a melee player I don’t even care that melee is gone. Seeing that it managed to stay in after smash 4 released was amazing enough. Melee had enough time in the spotlight. We can enjoy playing/watching our game at tournaments that aren’t best of 3. Melee not being at evo isn’t going to slow it down.
Damn, I've played melee for 4 years now (along with smash4 and other fighters), but some of these top melee players that I've watched and followed over the years are being pretty ungrateful. The sendoff video was just fine, and it was a bummer for like a minute and then I was over it. How many other fighters get a sendoff from evo? How many that are 18+ years old? Melee has had an amazing run at evo, but the only people who didn't have a childish reaction in this were Leffen and Nairo.
I mean living off a game and playing it are rather different. And it's the previous history that made the moment bitter. At this point the community will still exist and I have a feel although it wont be any time soon in my life time I bet it will be back

The only reason Melee gets big viewers is for Smash hype, and only a VERY small percentage of them care that it's Melee specifically. The 'lost viewers' won't be lost at all; they'll just be watching Ultimate instead. The only people who genuinely care about this are the 10 people that still play Melee.

@Luca Antinori That's easy. The input lag is 3x as bad in Ultimate as it is in Melee. There are way more broken mechanics despite people complaining about Melee mechanics. Too many characters have counters and they last too damn long. They removed force shielding so zoners are way more irritating to deal with. It doesn't have anywhere near the same fluidity of movement, the buffer system helps a little but it's still not comparable to the level of control you get in Melee.

See I feel for the melee community that their game is no longer at evolution because they had to fight for so long with the rest of the fighting game Community to recognize their game as a competitive game. But nowadays melee gets this bad rap that people seem to Shadow it because of the people who get angry about stuff that happens to smash melee like it was unfair. Smash melee had its time in the Limelight ultimate is here and should take its place I think it is worthy of taking its place as an excellent game with excellent mechanics and amazing ways of entertaining audiences that's all that matters especially to the people who run evolution. The melee Community needs to learn how to grow up and learn that you can't just play one game the rest of your life and expect it to last forever. You look at streamers like nairo and zero and ESAM and realize they've moved on making their streams and content more varied and they play different games and build a community instead of just relying on reputation in smash melee. the smash melee Community is big enough to live on its own now without Evo and can continue to thrive as long as it wants but the competitive world will move on with or without the salty players

Many of these reactions are clearly ovrereacting for the sake of entertainment, they're definitely over the top but I don't even find that many of them childish. I think all of them have grounds for being angry or frustrated, the logic to remove Melee isn't really sound. The game pulls in a massive crowd both live at the stage as well as online and hasn't had a bad decline. I don't see what doesn't qualify it for EVO and I myself don't even play smash or follow the scene that closely.
I think it was Hugs that was trying to say something that with less emotion behind it, which was that it'd make more sense if Melee was getting replaced by some other massive game/brand/franchise but those two games don't really cut close at all. To elaborate on this point, the only logic I can see or accept here is that they don't wanna have two Smash games. But again I would only agree with this if EVO's line up was actually so saturated to the point where melee and ultimate would take too much space. The two games in here don't really do justice for that argument. It's fair if EVO wants to try something new, but then imo out of all these games it makes the least sense to pick Melee, if you wanted to introduce a new or bigger audience, why would you cut one of your largest, off.
Again I'm mostly speaking from a company type of view, as a company or tourney provider, this is a really fkn weird move from EVO. I personally don't mind their decision, since I don't follow Melee as closely as prob do. But I think any hardcore fan or player have every reason they need to be upset by this decision as the argument for it is incredibly weak imo.
If we're being honest. Melee was never really even a fighting game. Just a disgusting mess of glitches and exploits. Gotta love how Smash doesn't want Melee anymore, but Melee has no idea why anyone wouldn't want them though.

It'll still be shitty to me, but if you enjoy it, that's fine and I respect that. I played BBTag for a week and I ended up realizing that it just wasn't for me. I was extremely excited for it too, but it was a disappointment in the end. We all have our preferences when it comes to fighting games, but a FIGHTING game that holds your hand through and through just isn't worthy of being called a true fighting game.

i said it was Harder for the Aging, older scene to swap to ultimate because they know they'll get bodied by the new kids. Melee is a bunch of old-guys trying to hold onto what last shred of "Hype" they can. the game is done, we've done all we can do in it, there is fuck all progression, you know what to expect. there is no Dev Support and any 3rd party support is outright banned by Nintendo, even if Project M would breath new life into the Melee scene or even the use of Emulators to get 60fps (Which would dramatically change the frame mechanics of Melee and give it new life)

This is like SF fans pissing their pants to have the original Street Fighter 2 at EVO every year until the end of time.
Good thing most SF fans knew how to move on, granted Capcom taught them how by essentially releasing updated versions of the same game as if it were new.
The melee community doesn't need to move on. They just have to accept that they were never entitled to have a spot at EVO. It was earned and other games are meant to earn their spot. Melee did a lot for the FGC and EVO can always honor it in ways other than holding tournaments for it. Melee is fortunate enough to have such a consistent run at EVO and they should be grateful people decided to keep holding tournaments for it post Smash 4... and if I remember correctly, Smash 4 almost didn't make it to EVO because of Nintendo. Imagine possibly having zero semblance of a Smash presence at the biggest fighting game tournament of the year.

The point Thresh Prince is making isn't that Melee actually needs EVO. We all know Melee will be fine on its own.
The problem is that, while Melee was growing every year it was on EVO, people continued to say shit like that to begin with. Melee elitists chanted over Nairo's win at brawl, as well as Zero's win at Sm4sh. They shit on every other game at EVO. They continued to taunt TOs online about how they'd 'never get cut cause that $$$.'

No. If Ultimate didn't get a spot AND melee lost theirs, that would be equivalent to what happened to Marvel (I don't think infinite SHOULD have had a slot, just saying). Plus MVC3 got dropped WITHOUT it's replacement getting a spot and without it being nearly as old as melee.

Melee has been in the roster for years. Why can't other games get a chance? Unist being at Evo has brought the game a lot of new fans and exposure that the game really needed since its so underappreciated. Melee is a good game but all good things come to an end, it would be unreasonable to expect melee to be at evo forever. Especially with how well smash ultimate is doing. They no longer need 2 smash games in the roster.
it's because it's still one of the largest active fgc scenes on the planet, it hasn't came to an end it's just being excluded so it's not progression it's just a snub
people are allowed to be sad and mad that their game is gone nobody's going to be happy that they're not going to be able to compete in Evo anymore
All sad to see no more Melee, but I dunno why people are dunking on Samurai Shodown. That's one of the granddaddies of fighting games, to see em back is exciting as all hell

@Goliath Online well i've always been a melee fan, got all into the mythology and events and stuff, but I also really like anime fighters, especially all of french bread's stuff.
Its just sad the behavior of big name melee personalities in response to this, especially since french bread games have only got to where they were with a community so similar to melee's in it's close knit and die hard nature.
Like, i remember when the first under night trailer came out and french bread literally only had melty blood, a fan game, that was well known to their name at the time. Now it's got a place next to effing street fighter on the mainstage.
And the worst part is melee doesnt even suffer from this. The most popular melee tournament was definitely evo, but the community organizes the majority of melee tournaments themselves independent of any leagues, so melee only dies if all the melee players just get sucked into smash ultimate. Melee players didnt even really like the evo tournament rules, and it was always the least satisfactory melee tournament, it was FAR more about the exposure than the tourney it self.
@Goliath Online on top of this, to say that ultimate is challenging melee is an understatement. Literally every high end melee player is playing ultimate casually, at the very least, and in my area melee players havent even touched it since ultimate dropped.

Another thing that's been happening is the melee meta just completely stagnating, its horrendous. I am glad no one has to watch jigg, icies and space animal fighter z in 2019
@@capnbarky2682 Sure, the melee community actually love their game so much that they carry heavy crts to play. That's called dedication. I like Ultimate as well, but damn, people really don't bother to bring setups to locals where I live.
A well developed meta =/= boring/bad. All games have tiers, including Ultimate. Characters like Kirby or lil' Mac are actually bad relative to rest of the cast. Just because you apparently think melee is boring to watch, and seem happy to see it kicked out of Evo, doesn't take away from the fact that melee is a very popular title that a lot of people love.

As a melee player I don’t even care that melee is gone. Seeing that it managed to stay in after smash 4 released was amazing enough. Melee had enough time in the spotlight. We can enjoy playing/watching our game at tournaments that aren’t best of 3. Melee not being at evo isn’t going to slow it down.
Damn, I've played melee for 4 years now (along with smash4 and other fighters), but some of these top melee players that I've watched and followed over the years are being pretty ungrateful. The sendoff video was just fine, and it was a bummer for like a minute and then I was over it. How many other fighters get a sendoff from evo? How many that are 18+ years old? Melee has had an amazing run at evo, but the only people who didn't have a childish reaction in this were Leffen and Nairo.
I mean living off a game and playing it are rather different. And it's the previous history that made the moment bitter. At this point the community will still exist and I have a feel although it wont be any time soon in my life time I bet it will be back
