    little bit of context: the video released the very same day as the Genesis 7 concluded, timed to release after Grand Finals ended. That year's grand finals was Zain vs Hungrybox. While Zain won, I still have mad respect to release the video betting on the coinflip HBox might have won.

    I actually saw this doc when I knew nothing about competitive Smash so I can say that it is a good intro to the competitive scene for anyone who is new to Smash. It presents many of the storylines in an easily digestible and interesting way that is very hard to replicate.
    Granted, looking back, the Mango downplaying is downright criminal lmao. It's especially ironic since Hbox hadn't won any majors in both 2013 and 2014, aka the peak of the god era, yet Mango doesn't get a pass when he goes just one year without winning any majors. Like I get that it was to build narrative, but it just feels a bit too much imo.

    • @faisala2911
      @faisala2911 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I don't think the documentary claimed that hbox had god status in 2013/2014. The documentary claimed that mang0 had a slump during this time which is a true statement, albeit a bit editorialized for the sake of the narrative, but it doesn't bring the doc down imo

    • @heartnet40
      @heartnet40 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Mango also sort of does it to himself. He has a history of slumps and talking about now wanting to compete. Hell, he's coming out of a slump right now. I think to people who aren't always in the Melee storylines it gets really easy to count him out because Mango himself sets the stage for people to doubt him.
      Not that anyone should. Mango isnt a favorite of mine, but the dude is a genuine demon when he's activated. One of the best to ever do it for SURE.

    I've shown this vid to family and friends who knew nothing about Smash and all of them loved it. The Smash Doc is kinda hard to recommend to people with no investment since it takes more than 4 hours. You can get away with putting a 90 minute film on for a movie night, but it's a lot harder to get people to sit through a miniseries.

    I’m from South America and grew up with nintendo games my entire childhood, Smash being my favorite including Brawl. I always dreamed of smash tournaments here when I was little but this is not the US or Japan in my case, and eventually I grew up and kinda forgot about it.
    2019 I moved to the US and my hommies there loved playing Ultimate, which I got hooked really fast; this documentary popped up on my youtube some day, and I absolutely loved it. I found out about the entire smash scene and its history, started watching majors and streams durong the pandemic and finally migrated to Melee. In fact, I loved watching Melee tourneys even when I only played Ult, then I eventually picked up the game and I regularly play both to this day.. one funny part about this story is that I didn’t even know Smash 4 even existed even after I was playing Ultimate for a while lol (that’s how successful nintendo and the wii U were down here).
    Hbox is a huge inspiration and I always cheer for him to this day no matter what, and that’s because of this video; picking up Melee during the pandemic was also an extremely fun and deep experience. I attended some tournaments including Genesis 8 in the beautiful San Jose, CA, and it was literally a childhood dream come true for me where I witnessed the Jmook arc, the n0ne stomp, the Fizzwiggle upset and much more all in person, so thank you EmpLemon!!

    On the bit where he sidelines Mango's god status:
    This video was published basically at the lowest point of Mango's career where his results were on a decline, and he was saying on stream how he wasn't enjoying tournaments and losing interest in competing. Of course after his re-engagement during the pandemic and rise to rivalry with Zain et al it seems presumptive in hindsight; but if you were just drawing a straight line trend of his recent results at that point in time it wasn't as crazy a statement.

    • @festeelerfan
      @festeelerfan ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm sure most of the work was probably done long before this, but the video was released just a couple of months after Mango won BH9. Hbox himself had worse (and longer) periods of bad form during the era of the 5 gods, and there was only a very brief time during which his place among them was questioned.
      It's intentional misrepresentation of reality for the sake of fitting a narrative. The documentary also ignores some of the other problems people had with Hbox outside of the game. It's certainly not some cardinal sin or anything, but it's pretty irresponsible in my opinion.

    • @diodora2381
      @diodora2381 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@festeelerfan This documentary was made of the course of 6 months to almost a year I think Emplemon said. Documentaries never can be perfect representations. I think a lot of people criticize the doc for bias, but the point is telling Hbox’s side of the story not the entire picture. Hbox had never been understood by the community and was perennially hated, but just showing everyone exactly what happened in a different light changed a lot of perspectives on the guy for the better. The reality y’all remember isnt the reality Hbox experienced and that was the entire point of the doc; hes no antagonist, hes just one of us we all decided to hate.

      I kind of hate how many in the community only got this from the doc when Slippi came around after mang0 came back from a slump in 2018 while the video was made. Portraying Hbox as mostly a victim was for me the biggest misconception to come around when i entered the scene and sort of established this Hbox fans vs Melee fans relationship that made it miserable to watch Melee until Summit 11 as an Hbox fan with all the toxicity coming from older spectators who got a kick out of bullying us and giving us confirmation with our bias from the video with this.
      But the part of the relentless harassment was very much true and we still see this degenrate amount of hate directed at players till this day be it at Cody, Leffen or even still Hbox

    I'm definitely an hdoc kid. I was slowly getting more into smash and melee, but this vid brought me in completely. It may be biased, but the doc was not the only thing that was saying mang0 was falling off (11th rank) I really like this vid because it's probably one of the best pieces of smash media to show to someone who has never seen melee. I'm not really as much of an hbox fan anymore from when i saw the video for the first time, and nowadays I definitely understand why some people don't like this video, but it can't be denied that this was a very good and influential video for smash.

    • @Celia_Dawn
      @Celia_Dawn 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      11th rank only happened like 3 years after the doc, in a period where Mango was genuinely slumping.
      Immediately after the doc was the online era, aka Mango Zain Tier era, immediatley followed by Mango being the undisputed number 1 in 2021, and then his slump was genuinely only for first half of 2022 before winning like 5 tournaments in the second half.
      Fuck, Mango won literally the two biggest tournaments immediately before the doc released (Big House 9 and Birthday Bash) and ended the year ranked 3rd. Mango was absolutely not falling off when it was released.

    Okay so I didnt watch the video because I wanted to watch the whole uncut thing so I watched the vod on twitch instead. I think what's important to note with the "last of the gods" thing is that while the phrasing does make it sound like Mango stopped being good entirely, I think Emp means to say that Hbox was the only one still dominating the rest of the competition like the gods did in their time. Mango stopped dominating that hard, at least until after the video was out. So Hbox was "the last of the gods" in that he was the only one still dominating over everyone else, not that he was the only one still good at the game.

  • @samkilby7411
    @samkilby7411 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I totally agree that Hbox was really good for the game, but only in hindsight. When his reign was happening, a lot of the community seemed to be divisive and toxic, but his dominance allowed other players to push through and figure out how to make it a good fight. Hbox was absolutely critical in getting to where we are now, which is undoubtedly the best melee has ever been. A Pikachu won a major, a Yoshi has won a few. These are things that were previously considered impossible.

      If Armada stuck around he'd prob still be up there, but he didnt. The meta has changed quite a bit. Modern Amsa for example would probably clap peak Armada. Not to say Armada couldnt get back on the grind and learn how to win, but the competition today is much harder than it was during Armada's time.

    • @eragon78
      @eragon78 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@austinuhr8459 Maybe, but Amsa also leveled up MASSIVELY from when armada was good. Amsa is legit a contender for #1 in the world right now, and he was barely top 10 when Armada was #1.
      I mean, Amsa has Zain's number, and I think Zain would probably give Armada a hard time even if Armada decided to stick with the game.
      This means Amsa only needs a run where Zain beats Armada, or Mango, or HBox, or Jmook and then he could win a major. And he's won THREE already, so its pretty likely that something like that wouldve happened, even with Armada still around.
      The only person who beats Amsa in modern times consistently is Cody. (and to a lesser extent moky, but he doesnt usually get far enough to fight amsa in winners so its less of an issue).
      Axe maybe wouldnt have won, but I definitely think Amsa still wouldve won a major even if Armada stuck around.

      @@eragon78 Perhaps. Thing is though, for the majority of Armada's career (I forget the exact %), whoever won the tournament either was him or had to go through him. aMSa struggles against top peaches now; if Armada had continued, he'd be borderline unbeatable for a Yoshi. aMSa would have needed quite a bit of bracket luck to win it. Neither Plup nor Leffen won their first majors without beating Armada first.

The thing is that, you, may not like the narrative that is being presented, which is ok, but not presenting every angle is part of documentaries. The exact same thing happened when the Metagame doc dropped. People with biases watch docs that have different biases, and it is difficult to meet at the middle in those cases.

    EmpLemon was a fairly small youtuber prior to the first season of Never Ever, which this video is part of. He literally gained over half of his current subscriber count that year alone.
    Armada was pretty annoyed with the documentary as well. In his reaction video to it, he described as the reason for him quitting as not wanting to deal with toxicity he was receiving as being a peach main that was the best in the world because it was a "floaty, campy, uncool character." However since the worst of this was buried either a lot deeper on the forums that were stateside or on twitter posts of chronic posters from over 3 years ago it got missed. Which doesn't surprise me considering the production schedule he had for type of content Emp was pushing on what was a small YT budget at production time.
    Despite having watched this a couple times I didn't put together your spoof in this video until the karma struck. The visible shame at 40:00 was worth a good chuckle though you were ultimately right for why this is ultimately good for the community. It got a LOT of people interested and that interest generated a bunch of new blood that either stuck with it or rode it along to ultimate.

After this, I had begun practicing more, Re-purchased Melee since my childhood copy was long gone, became a lot more aware of the figures in the community, and now I’m a lot more active in Ultimate tournaments in Central and Northeastern Pennsylvania, along with trying some Melee brackets when they’re available. Think this doc has a great start and middle, but largely falls apart discussing Armada (who disputes that hungry box was a major cause of his departure), Mang0 who was still really good in 2019, and the broader fgc. Great narrative but it bends reality to support a point that doesn’t quite work.

      I still think those are 2 misconceptions in an 1 hour video and that mang0 thing wasn't such a bad thing to say if Emp didn't follow Melee after Pound 2019 tbh because mang0 only came back after Goml and was still giving some not that great performances inbetween that him THAT guy with Zain online.

    The sole reason why I first tuned into a smash tournament, Smash Summit 12, was because of EmpLemon. I don't think there was any bias in this documentary that increased exposure & interest in Melee couldn't shake off. Weird statements aside, a 1-player hero's journey was always gonna be biased to some degree lol

    Admittedly i feel both of you are wrong with the Mang0 results because you cant judge a video that came out 3 years ago with results that couldn't have been available at the time, thats silly.
    However the results at the time were not as bad as Emp made them sound, they arent like his peaks and Admittedly some of them look bad but one was a forfeited so he probably had something on his mind, his rankings and results were atill good.
    In addition, he whole title of being a god, whilst a bit cringe, was more of an at the time prediction of who would benon top as opposed to truth, tbf to an outsider it probably looksnthat way but its not fully like that.

    ngl i feel weird that when emplemon talked about how hbox fell off and claimed that people said he doesnt deserve god status for not winning a tournament warrants no reaction, but when mango doesnt win anything (because in melee it doesnt matter if you get 2nd 3rd whatever) everyone says this video is insanely biased. I agree the video is biased but like you have to see it from the other perspective where emplemon is simply looking at the numbers.

    His documentary was honestly my introduction to whole Melee scene. I saw it when it came out and had under 50k views as I followed Emp for his old YTP content at the beginning.
    Its in general a good introduction THO the Mang0 comment was a bit outdated in the end and it kinda sucks that that comment especially invalidates the whole doc for many people.
    I guess its because Emp himself admitted later that he really has no experience on Melee comp and just found the Hbox thing interesting, so I don't blame him too much on it. Also I guess because fuckton of other Gods were dropping out at the same time and Mang0 performing pretty bad at the same time, it might have looked like he was dropping off at the same time. ESPECIALLY if you didn't know who the kid was or hadn't looked into Mang0 more(especially when you don't know his history etc.)
    Still, taking that thing off, the doc is great even in retrospect. The Mang0 comment just hurts it so much and is very dated.
    I also recommend Bronol's docs if YOU(who is reading this) haven't seen them. Good stuff as well.

  • @Landmasters
    @Landmasters ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding Mango look at it this way. Lemon's talking more about that dominant aura players like PP, Armada, Hbox, Ken, and Mango showed in the past. He goes 2018 winless, not great. He gets to 2019 and scores three wins which is great on paper, but these wins were less dominance and more scrapping or being the benefactor. GOML was a dream bracket and he was a sour spot off from losing to Swedish in Winners Quarters. Big House he was the underdog against Zain. Birthday Bash he dodged Plup and Hbox in Winners
    They looked like GOML 2022 where Hbox narrowly beat iBDW and was the benefactor of fighting Jmook twice for Winners/GF and him double eliminating Zain. Certainly not given to him, but hardly a run where he looked like 2016-2020 Hbox and felt inevitable.
    Anyway I don't agree on "questioning his God status" given M2K didn't win a Supermajor until 2018 and Hbox was shaky until 2015. I do agree that Mango seemed like more of a contender than a favorite up until he started keeping up with Prime Zain in 2020/2021 and got on a hot streak in the 2nd half of 2022. Look I'm happy to be proven wrong that he had a lot left in the tank, I'll hold that L with pleasure.

Ofcouse because of this I don’t really understand why people hate on hbox so much, but perhaps theres something im missing so if anyone could explain why he gets so much hate please do. (And ik he gets hate for playing puff but it goes beyond that, some people seriously hate him as at a personal level, as if he smashed their mom or smth)

    • @somsnosa.
      @somsnosa. 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      i mean its obviously complicated, and there were times when people went too far, but overall, combined with the way hbox played, some of it also had to do with the way he presented himself. he always wants attention, he'll steal spotlights, and he always has something he wants to say, although he has gotten better with that recently. the other part of that is the stuff he said always came across as not being very genuine and theatrical/dramatic, like hugs mentions in the video. he also never really did a good job of defending his reputation, and he'd lash out at his haters from time to time, which to be fair is totally reasonable. i wouldnt expect someone to always protect their image or defend themselves, its unfair and doesnt really justify any additional hate that would come from it. there are times where it got bad but i cant speak for his experiences so i couldnt tell u how it affected him. its also always worth checking someones bias when they're recounting things, this documentary certainly had some decently strong bias. there's also just group hate, people will hate something because others do as well. its a complex topic that you cant really fully understand unless u also understand the history and culture of the scene as a whole to some degree as well.

    I like a good amount of this doc but the implication that Armada retired due to not being able to keep up?? He was up on Hbox in that year and still looked great while playing up to the end when he decided to retire.
    And I say this as a Mango fan but let's not act like if Armada kept pace he wouldn't have been number 1 again and kept the field of play far more grounded than it is now.
    The absence of more gods across time has allowed for those that remain to further cement legacies
    Edit 1: also saying Armada of all people never faced the hate Hbox faced when he had to go up and be faced with a crowd who suddenly had national chants specifically against him or Leffen? For ten years? Biased

    • @rannynihilius8481
      @rannynihilius8481 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Armada more so got the anti european cheers and against his dominance but never to this insane hateful point like Hbox. The players and commentators all showed respect to Armada while there was a very clear tone on the mic when he played that badically encouraged others to belittle him.
      The only time Armada got comperable hate was after he retired and mang0's trashtalk about him was taken seriously by some weirdos.
