      Actually I think he was in the books in two separate sections. @@Fingered22 Yeah his intention was to soberingly discourage people from joining up. The Federation and its military only want people that are 100 percent willing and so they try to discourage continuation and make quitting federal service very easy with the only penalty being that you can not apply again. This ensures that those who remain and graduate are highly motivated individuals. If memory serves the book states that the federation purposefully put maimed and disfigured citizens on the main desks for this very reason to show that federal service is a hard and great personal sacrifice.

    Best thing about all the modern screeching and mania around this franchise is that the book is from 1959. Less than 14 years after the end of World War 2 and 43 years after “the war to end all wars”
    In that sense Heinlein literally lived through and took first hand influence from those events and the direct social and monetary costs that were required to fight them. (hell, his experiences in themselves make for quite interesting reading).
    Then 60 years later a bunch of privileged weirdos point and call forth Godwin because a director used a certain style of clothing.

  • @evensgrey
    @evensgrey 4 ปีที่แล้ว +211

    The Canine Corp has one very unpleasant consequence of the nature of the relationship between the handler and dog. It's mentioned in the book that if the handler is killed, they simply shoot the dog, and that it would be much easier if they could just shoot the handler if the dog is killed. The recruiting officer Rico goes through (who's missing both legs, one arm, and a large part of his FACE) explains he was a handler.
    In the MI, not only does everyone fit to drop drop in every drop their unit is involved in, the drops go in rank order from top to bottom. And yes, this does result in a disproportionately high casualty rate among the officers, particularly the senior officers. This results in both a high rate of promotion in the MI officer ranks, and most officers having to juggle multiple duty positions, because there are never enough officers in any formation after it begins to engage in any serious combat.
    The various formations also have a very British flavor to them. Like the traditional British Regiments, each formation has traditions, ranks, and even decorations unique to it. One formation Rico is in for a while (until it is retired from use for a while because it lost too many people at once, and the survivors are distributed as veteran replacements to other formations) has a tradition of wearing a gold skull earring, with a short chain dangling from it with a bundle of gold bones on the end, one for each drop the wearer has survived in the formation. Rico is rather proud of his when he gets it, and it marks his full acceptance by the other members of the formation, because he's now actually gone into combat and come out the other side alive.
    Combat is also not seen as honorable or noble. It is viewed as a grim necessity if humanity is to survive in a hostile universe. There's a reason that recruiting officer was so extensively maimed. They don't blow any sunshine up your skirt when you're recruited. They want you to be fully aware that you may very well get crippled or killed and they want to be very in your face about it. There's also no compunction about doing what is viewed as expedient. The book opens with Rico in a terror drop against the Skinnies, a humanoid race with some kind of alliance with the Arachnids that the Federation is trying to break. By hurting them for having it. The MI (who in the books wear power armor festooned with weapon systems of many kinds) drop into a Skinny city for the express purpose of causing as much mayhem and suffering as they possibly can, which is a LOT. Yes, they are INTENTIONALLY attacking civilians, and they're doing it because they believe (correctly, as it happens) that it will work. (By the end of the book, the Federation has concluded that cleaning Arachnids out of any world they've seriously infested isn't worth the effort, and are building an immense weapons platform to simply destroy such worlds, Death Star style. They've long since concluded that this is a war of extermination, and it doesn't bother them in the least to win such a war.)

    • @evensgrey
      @evensgrey 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @Zack Ceasar The flying is a significant part of why they take so many casualties. Flying means not being in any sort of cover and being exposed to anti-air defense systems that are pretty much irrelevant to infantry on the ground. This is why real-world jet packs were never developed beyond early test models. (The lack of endurance could have been improved a huge amount, but there's no feasible way to armor a soldier against the kind of fire they would be expected to attract flying above a battlefield.)

    It's also based on something most civilians don't realize about military and law enforcement personnel. Yes, their are individuals that join for a sense of power and the opportunity to kill, they are not the majority and never have been. Most that enlist though do so out of a sense of duty to serve and protect, to not just country but also community. While I, as a former High School Teacher agree to a certain extent, the actual situation is, as it almost always is in the real world, far more nuanced. I taught for several years in a School in a less well off area. Many of the parents there were working multiple jobs simply to make ends meet. They could not afford child care, o the school was literally their only option if they wanted to keep a roof above their heads and food on the table.
      The point here is really that you need to look at things in both a more nuanced manner, and on a case by case basis rather than with blanket statements. The latter generally pushes many of the actually real problems under the carpet and ignores them. Those problems however are central to the main issue and need to be addressed. While there most certainly are parents who believe as you have indicated (I have met my fair share of them), they are not, in my experience, in the majority.

I know most people don't like the idea of reserving franchise to a certain type of person, and literally banning the majority of individuals from political power, they don't understand that citizens deserve the franchise because they have been willing and are willing to put everything they have in the line to serve and protect their society, their family and loved ones. If that scenario occurs the federation has a hard choice between adhering to its principles and going down on them or violating its principles and forcing unwilling civilians into service which could save it from takeover but would spawn a massive moral crisis in the aftermath

Yeah, of course, there are the all-unifying "ENEMY" the bugs, but you can call some nationality the all-unifying "ENEMY" and it would be basically the same. Ergo, we have the same system, where the deprivation of people's rights is mandated by the wealthy (see US military complex) by creating yet another barrier for people, allowing to throw people into the grinder. We're talking a 30ies dystopian society, excused by the "bugs" basically.
      Note, any government that tries to take away your rights and milk you for taxes is a fascist dystopian government that should be repelled with the force of free citizens as per US 2 amendment.
      And regarding "semper fidelis". The mere Idea of some uneducated low-class jarhead thrown to murder children for the sake of corporations 9000 miles away being more entitled to vote is ridiculous at its best. Their "faithfullness" is to the ruling class, they murder innocents, occupy other countries, bring misery to others so just that the fat cats can get more oil. As modern assault rifles are gas operated for the recoil system they need some sort of attachment in the barrel to block the easy discharge of gas and force it through the recoil system. If the Terran Federation rifles are anything like that then that 1 live round among 500 blank would blow the attachment off the end of the rifle and bugger it up. It also says that they don't load their own ammo into magazines as blank and live ammo look different and are easy to distinguish at a glance or feel.
    The only way I can think of is if the Terran Federation's rifle uses something like a Metal Storm system with electricly fired rounds that come in a block, load into the weapon all at once.

    I find your timing on this subject fortuitous on my part. I just finished listening to the audio book and watched all five movies(2nd and 3rd being the hardest to watch). I am very intrigued by Robert's vision of the Federation and why and how it is successful. I did find it interesting that that Robert thought up that they had a branch of mathematics that allowed for proving some concepts. It reminded me a bit of Asimov's Foundation series (Psychohistory). I wait eagerly for your next installment that covers the pros and cons of Robert's system of governance.
    One thing that is either visionary on his part or just applicable to our age is the concept of is the use of corporal punishment. I remembered getting spanked as a child by either my parents or school administration (for something bad I did in second grade) and now see the lack of it in early education or parenting. In today's American society (I do not know of other culture's view of this), we are afraid to discipline our children this way because it now viewed negatively and people tend to think of it as abusive rather than thinking of it as a tool).

      About that time was when "scientific" government...not quite on the socialist model, but the idea that it was possible to create a "science of government" in one form or another was VERY popular about the time that Henlein wrote this book. And if the blm riots where "mostly peaceful arsons" and "mostly peaceful looting" occurred during a time of *minor* civil unrest, I understand why Heinlein wrote that the veterans thought hanging "looters" was fine.

    If I recall, Though I could be wrong, Isn't the privileges' of voting in the Federation obtainable though more then just Military Service? I seem to remember that just doing something for the public wellbeing of the Federation was enough to also gain the ability to vote, Like being Law Enforcement, Sanitation, or Firefighters. I mean, These are all essential services that would still be needed, even in the Federation, Which is why I recall these also being paths to citizenship; And that the only reason the books focused on the Military Service was because it was a book about the war itself.
