    As cold and calculated as Hailan became, she's definitely one of the best characters in the series. She's indeed ruthless but only to defend herself and the people she loves not really for power like Jia or out of spite like Yanwan. I also love the fact that she learned to play the game like the empress Dowager, not becoming too attached to the Emperor's affection like Shu and Ruyi at the end.

      In this place you have to become attached to someone or something not to absolutely lose your mind. She chose her mistress. Ruyi may not be it anymore but in Hialan's heart she will forever be

      Totally agree. Although I do believe that the reason why Hailan (and also Jia) soared so high was because she wasn’t blinded by affection for the emperor (well, she never had any affection for him, but yeah).

    Hailan has the most interesting story arc. She started out as timid and frightened, but grows into a woman who understands the politics of the harem and plays the game well. I also like how loyal she was to Ruyi.

    Consort Shu's whole life is so sad. These few moments before her pregnancy are like the only moments where she's happy.

  • @alison4398
    @alison4398 ปีที่แล้ว +44

    Another aspect of why the Emperor doesn’t want Shu to get pregnant (which I believed you touched on in a previous recap)- Shu is a direct descendent of the previous imperial dynasty, which the Emperor’s family deposed. Marrying her raised a few eyebrows because it could be seen as giving the old dynasty a foothold into power, but it was more or less brushed aside because she didn’t have a high rank and there wasn’t a problem if she didn’t have a son.
    However, if Shu did have a son, it would raise serious concerns about her family and their supporters trying to put her child on the throne- essentially, restoring the previous dynasty to power. Which was another actually valid reason (in the eyes of the Emperor) to prevent her from conceiving at all.

    • @FeliciaShen
      @FeliciaShen ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This is a very good point, but I also would like to add something. When Shu was first introduced, she said she was from the Yehe Nara Clan. This led the consorts in the episode to talk about the "curse" said by the last prince of the clan, who was later defeated by the emperor of the late Jin dynasty, that the Yehe Nara clan will cause the downfall of the Aisin Gioro clan (the current royal family depicted in the drama) even if there are only daughters left. Even if the people at this time weren't superstitious, it's still something to keep in mind and was probably one of the factors as to why the emperor doesn't want children with her.
      Also fun fact: Empress Dowager Cixi, who was the last empress of the Qing dynasty and practically ending thousands of years of Chinese royal ruling, is from the Yehe Nara clan. Of course, there were many factors and issues involved with this event, but I think this was an interesting coincidence.

    • @alison4398
      @alison4398 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is a very interesting detail! I didn’t think too much about the superstition part, but when you mention that the last Qing empress is from that clan… maybe there was something to be said for them being wary. 😂

      consort shu was descended from a manchu tribe, the yehe, that was warring with the Aisin Gioro. after their defeat, the tribe’s leader cursed that any member of the tribe, male or female, would end the qing dynasty. this is why everyone was shocked when consort shu said she was from the yehenara clan. she wasn’t a descendant of the ming dynasty whose surname was zhu.

    I think Hailan is indifferent towards children that is not Ruyi's, I do remember she said when Ruyi disscussed about Yonghuang's pitiful situation when Suoxin feeds him foods, she just said that Ruyi doesnt need to talk about him anymore because one day Ruyi will give birth to one and her willingness to risk Yongqi's health when she consumed the cinnabar to help Ruyi?
    And she used Yongzhang's doll to stuff the reed flower inside it, what if anyone found out about it, the poor child is going to get hurt after that
    So yeah, Hailan definitely dont care of children that is not Ruyi's 😭

  • @its99pm
    @its99pm ปีที่แล้ว +36

    Despite being perfectly willing to arrange for a baby to die, I'm still 100% team Keliyete HaiLan 💕
    I think it's very easy for us in the modern world to be righteous and judge these women, but the truth is undeniably that living in the harem *necessitates* being at least a little bit ruthless. Wan Daying is an excellent example: she keeps to herself, harms no one, and what does she get? Nothing. The emperor barely remembers she exists and she spends most of her life alone with her maids. While yeah, she manages to stay in the game until the bitter end, bitter is the keyword here. I very much doubt her life is at all happy. In sharp contrast to that, the ones who scheme and plot and cause deaths *benefit* from it in both rank and favor.
    I feel like Hailan is the golden middle ground here. She takes action only when others have acted against her or Ruyi first, and in doing so she defends her position (which is now precarious given that she's lost favor permanently). She has no ambition to rise in the ranks, she just wants to be safe where she's at + protect her son & her bestie. Hailan knows that even though the Empress' son is innocent, he will grow up under his mother's guidance and won't stay that way. Just think of Jingsi and how she helped and protected Yanwan on several occasions because of her hatred for Ruyi that she "inherited" from her mother. And if the Empress ever set her eyes on Yonqi and decided he was in the way of her own son? He'd be dead. The Empress wouldn't hesitate, she'd just arrange it so that Jia or her maid handles matters so her own hands are clean. Hailan knows this with absolute certainty, that's why she's willing. It's self-protection, pure and simple, and I do not blame her one bit. In fact, I cheer her on!
    Sad as it is, Ruyi's moral high-ground (aka inaction) begins here, and it leads her step by step, very slowly, to the absolutely horrendous situation she finds herself in towards the end. In the harem, always doing the right thing will only reward you with suffering. If you're not willing to do bad things *when necessary*, others will keep doing bad things to you.
    There's a quote from a Terry Pratchett Discworld book that I really like. I don't remember it word for word, but it basically says that while the various assassins sent after Sam Vimes only have to get lucky once, *he* has to be lucky every single time. It's a lot like that. If you take no action yourself, you have to somehow manage a lucky escape each and every time you fall into another concubine's trap. Ruyi eventually ran out of that luck.
    Edited to fix Wan's title; she wasn't a Changzai yet at this stage, oops

      This is an incredible write-up! I do think that wanting characters to be "good people" (whatever that means) really is something that's easy to say from the comfort of a tv screen, but not quite as easy when you're living in it. I still don't think actions like killing the 7th price fit under "when necessary" but then... who's to say? Maybe 7th prince would have grown up to be a baby-eating dictator or something. All they can do is act in the way they think is right in the moment 🤷

    从前没有永琪,下什么手做什么事都没有后顾之忧。但如今……”她摇头,“不是为了别人,只为永琪。我从前不懂,只为恨着一个人,便什么事都肯做。如今我和你都算是人母,这件事,不必做了。
    “Before YongQi, I could do anything without a care. But now…” She shook her head. “It’s not about anyone else, it’s about YongQi. I didn’t understand before, I did everything out of hate. Now, we’re both mothers. There’s no need to do this.”
    海兰犹不死心:“姐姐……” 海兰的声音有些尖锐:
    Hailan wouldn’t give up. “Sister…” her voice was sharp and piercing.
    “不只是为了永琪,姐姐也担心地位和尊荣受损,也怕皇上知道吧?从前咱们输得彻底,什么都不怕,如今得到愈多,瞻前顾后也多了。”海兰微微黯然,“姐姐,我真怕有一日,我们的顾虑太多,便只会束手无能了。”
    “It’s not just because of YongQi. Sister, you’re also worried about your position and the damage to your honor and glory. You’re also afraid of the emperor finding out, right? In the past, we had nothing. Now that we have gained so much, we’ve become overly cautious.” HaiLan continued dimly “Sister. Hailan is willing to do anything for Ruyi. No one is safe if she thinks they are a threat to her sister. I personally think though that keeping Yihuan unaware of what the emperor was doing to her only harmed her even more in the long run, given what happens to her in the end for those who have read ahead and knows what happens next. As for the empress, it's all downhill from here after the death of the 7th prince.

    Watching Hailan's character journey throughout the show is quite interesting because it's such a contrast with Ruyi. I consider Hailan to be more of the typical harem drama lead character: someone who was sweet and innocent, but turned cold and calculating in order to survive. On the other hand, Ruyi has maintained her morals throughout the show and barely "punishes" to the point that it's frustrating that she is so passive when other characters would have been punished so much more harsh for less. Take A'rou and Yanwan for example. Ruyi has never doled out any sort of "harsh punishment" towards A'rou even though she deserved to at many times. When Hailan noticed Yanwan's inner motives towards the emperor, she quickly nipped it by convincing Chun to send her to the Flower Department.

    • @dramarecaps4217
      @dramarecaps4217  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ohhhh but the question is did she nip it? Because consider what happened to Yanwan after this, and how sending her to the flower department ended up with her at Jia's palace, becoming a consort, etc. Etc. Not to say that things would have turned out better if Hailan hadn't intervened but I feel like it shows that even aggressive tactics don't always work, and can sometimes even make things worse

    What can we say about the emperor besides the fact he likes his working ladies! Definitely into those girls who can work that 9-5 job 💅. Also, the empress definitely made her own karma. How many babies died on her behalf or for her son to benefit? Jia and Hui and the Empress tag team killed 2 babies, a noble lady, attempted murder against Hailan, straight up killed Ruyi’s dad, and god knows what is to come. That’s why I find them way more vicious than Yanwan ever becomes. This is also a bigger issue of the emperor not managing his favoritism with his children. Women are only human and anyone will get upset if their baby isn’t celebrated as their siblings. It’s not fair, and he doesn’t even hide it. He made an infant the crown prince through no reason than his birth despite his own background.

Not only does that basically make all of the other boys’ progress moot, it would also make Yongcong’s life hell if he somehow managed to survive past 3 or 4 years. Langhua would turn him into a more fragile version of Yonglian.

    I really didn't like Mei's character at the start because of how easily she believed everything that she was told.

Though I heard it from secondary sources so I can't really verify them, but she was one of three women to have a child (and that child surviving) during Qianlong's prince days.
      And as for the head of the harem being so draining, Kangxi Emperor eventually became so disillusioned with his Empresses dying that he functionally left the Empress seat void and let the Huang Guifei run the harem after his second Empress died.

That maybe Moxin May try to go to somebody else to carry up the plan. I think we should’ve cut Moxin going to Hailan and Ruyi all together because why didn’t she tell the Emperor? And then with Shu, I can understand the two of them became friends and then she didn’t want to hurt her by telling her that the emperor is really making her take contraceptives, but I’m still mad. It’s literally the same thing you went through with the empress like come on. This is why after A’Rou’s fall this is my least favorite part of the show. All the powers that’s going to Jia’s head, Ruyi just feels so weird to me now and Hailan becomes hard to watch at times especially since the birth of fifth Prince and the Emperor just becomes so suspicious but never of the right people and he becomes a bad father and an even worse husband.

      Thats the one thing I never understood. Ruyi knows how much Hongli love her and puts her above everyone else, why couldn’t she have told him about Moxin? Did she think Moxin was gonna die soon so there was no point? The books got deleted from 💡📝 so I cant go back and find what she said after leaving. And with Shu, I guess she noticed how in love she was with the emperor. Like, drowning in love. If Shu was my friend, I wouldn’t know how to tell her without smashing her heart to pieces.

      Why didn't she tell the emperor? To me, it seemed like she didn't necessarily NOT want it to happen, she just didn't want to be involved. By not saying anything, it could still happen, she just wouldn't be getting herself in trouble for it. And that's exactly what happened!
      As for not telling Shu... Yeah I feel you. The only thing I will say in defense (compared to the empress situation) is that if someone told RuYi, she could have taken the basil beads out of her bracelet and still gotten pregnant. She then also knows that the empress is her enemy and to watch out of her. But Shu... If she were to stop taking the fertility drugs it would be suspicious. The only way would be to pretend she doesn't know anything, and lie to the emperor about why she doesn't want to take it anymore. Her 'enemy' in this case is the emperor so even if she knows that he doesn't want her to get pregnant... What then? She can't fight against it or scheme against him, and now her love life is ruined. I get why RuYi had that conversation with SuoXin because it's hard to say if telling her would do any good

      I just said it in another comment but my theory is that she wanted Moxin to do it, she just didn't want to be involved. So no reason to tell the emperor😌

    I remember defending Hailan’s killing the Empress son in a previous video, and now I know that sucks. Hailan is definitely no good, although in her defense, I’ve noticed that in the future, she gets concerned about other royal children when something happens to them, other than her son. I guess that being a mother changed her. Still, Hailan is not our heroine 😢
    We have to also take into account Chinese culture back then: if a man committed a serious crime, his children would be punished to. So I’m their logic, children deserve to pay for their parents. Her situation is a bit complex, yet still evil

      Wow, your point about children being (officially) punished for their parents misdeeds is a REALLY good one! It does make sense that growing up with that kind of law system it would naturally extend to everyday life as well 👏👏

    Wan was also a servant or how did she end up in the harem? Like the emperor never notices her

      The drama doesn’t address how she came into the harem but in their first scene together the emperor asks why she won’t talk to him.. she shyly says she doesnt want to annoy him so he says ok stay quiet then.. later on he tells Ruyi Wan has no talent or children.. he dismisses her which is so sad
