    Howdy
So, I’m reading the novels now (took a few days to catch up to where I am in the videos, sorry for the delay!)
So far, most of it is word for word, but there are some omitted scenes
Like a scene where Jia strokes her nail guards across HaiLan’s face threateningly and RuYi flicks her hand aside and puts Hailan behind her back to confront her. Like where is that RuYi? I would have loved to see that!
Another thing that was conveniently omitted from Mei’s miscarriage scene is the baby was STILL ALIVE and they decide to strangle it! I translated that scene and will put it in another comment if you’re interested, because it is wild.
And then there are some scenes that COMPLETELY change the characters/story. Like this whole Hailan arc. There are some serious differences in how it goes down in the book, it’s not nearly this gray. We know exactly who what when and where. Both RuYi and Hailan were made much nicer people in the drama lol. @sea has also pointed out a few pivotal book scenes that add to the drama.
All that to say, I would like to know if you guys are interested in that kind of stuff and if so, how best to implement it. Add a book review section at the end of the video? Add it as a comment when I post the video? I’m up for whatever, what do you guys think?

I absolutely love the scene where Hailan dolls herself up with all the ornaments and hairpins. Her gaze looks to have lost the small gleam she had, now replaced by the characteristic coldness of a concubine.
It makes me feel so powerful and capable of doing anything 😭.

Honestly the Empress kinda mistreated her son to the point where any simple scheme will knock him out lol. Poor kid. Hailan definitely did it tho. I love her but after this she's absolutely stepped into morally gray bordering evil instead of good. Doesn't make me love her any less tho

Hailan did it 100% (some fans say that in the book is more specific about hailan and the second prince) also no one in this drama is good, even Ruyi is not 100% an angel. But I like that, it’s kinda realistic that they can act evil because of confusion, sadness or anger.
Hailan shows through all the series that she only cares about her and Ruyi and that she would do anything that is needed to live in peace. Like flirting with the emperor lol or ruining other consorts and princes’ reputation or sacrificing others but I accept it because she does it for Ruyi lol
Also I always found weird how Hailan was more obsessed with the idea of Ruyi becoming the step empress than Ruyi herself , I have always thought that Hailan believed that she was gonna have secure and peaceful life because she was close to Ruyi (not about status but more like that she would not have to be afraid of schemes and stuff)

I think HaiLan just wanted her friend to be the Empress because who wouldn’t be happy for their friends? Yet, she probably thought of the other benefits. You can see her happy face when Ruyi ascends the throne, and it does seem like genuine happiness.

I thought it was obvious that Hailan and Lianxin killed the prince.
I mean Ruyi has A'Ruo's nails broken and thrown into a bag full of angry ass cats. Hailan has Ling Yunche killed. Nobody is entirely good or bad. That's what I love about the writing of these characters

In the novel, Hailan did it. She made a blanket that looks exactly like the second prince’s blanket, but instead of cotton it’s infill is made of Reed. She then convinced Chun to swap the blankets as reed blankets are not very warm, claiming that it’s only a “minute punishment” to the empress.

My most favorite thing about this whole drama is the evolution of Hailan’s character; she went from being a meek pushover to a Bad B**ch!!!!
And also I’d never really considered that Hailan may have potentially played a part in the 2nd princes death... but if she did, I’d still love her. In the palace, it’s either play the game or get played.

Haha I’m also in denial, yet Hailan did it. But think of this like this: she was driven by two emotions: anger of how she’s been treated, and revenge for what she thought the Empress did. Who hasn’t done anything driven by emotion to later regret it? Moreover, this is 18th Century China. Your life could be harvested by the Emperor easily for just a small mistake. In this context, human life is worthless. There are no morals like we have today. It’s understandable that, for Hailan, the child prince’s life isn’t as valuable as it is a child’s life today

    • @dramarecaps4217

I think also infant mortallity was much more common too so if a child didnt make it at that time they dont bat an eye especially if the child was in poor health. Hailan is just morales grey like aby other on the harem she is in surviving Mode and only cares about her survival, her son and ruyi.

First can I just fan girl over how good this drama looks. like it's so beautiful and cinematic.
ok. now hailan. a girl has got to do what a girl has got to do. she's the bad side of Ruyi. about her state of morality, it's hard to remain pure in the harem. Ruyi tried but we know how that ends
jia's self satisfied face is so easy to hate. I love the actress so much.

"she's the bad side of Ruyi"
I like the way you said that. It's been on my mind too. Like it's nice of RuYi to be able to say she never gets her hands dirty, but the reality is she can only afford to live like that because Hailan got her hands dirty for her!

  • @LittleClarinetPlayer
    @LittleClarinetPlayer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

4:38, I read a comment that Hailan purposefully fixed a doll with reeds to trigger an asthma attack. I think Hailan tipped the first prince over the edge, but didn’t cause his death directly, more like a combined effort. The person to blame entirely is the empress and Hailan tipped the scales. I think this because even Jai said he was sick and going to die anyways. Given Jai’s maid grew up in a medical household and had medical knowledge, I think she knew. This does make her very ambiguous though and I love it. Hailan does get her karma though later on when she nearly dies.
I cannot imagine how Hailan doesn’t want to beat the ever living life out of the emperor. He raped her, was going to ruin her life without Ruyi, gets stuck in the forbidden city until death now, puts up with his petty bullshit, and then he sends the only person Hailan gives a damn about away to protect his image. My god. I also love the speech Ruyi gave to Hailan. It is scary when you are a victim, but Ruyi pointed out when you are pushed to the edge of a cliff it’s either get the courage to fight or be pushed off. It is also the beginning of the emperor either breaking all the women who truly love him (Ruyi) or fostering such an environment they begin evil (Hailan).
Then the temple scene, I never realized how superstitious Hai is. She really is superstitious and only believes she is in the “right” cause she is supporting the empress. What happens when the empress decides to drop her like a hot potato? This is soemthing I did miss and makes more sense later on.

"even Jai said he was sick and going to die anyways"
Oooh I didn't catch that! In a way though, I feel like that would just be bailing Hailan out. In the end, even if it was just a final push, she is still responsible for her actions. After all, if he was 100% going to die, she could have just waited, right?
Yes YES to everything you said though. What hell it must be living with this man after what he did to you. And i understand why she loves RuYi so much because in the middle of all this, RuYi gives her the strength to fight.

    Very long comment sorry
    Part 1
    1. lol those aren't just "few measly drops of blood"... *Langhua is transcribing a Buddhist sutra with ink imbibed with her own blood*
    2. the "temple" is *Anhuadian Hall* , and I repeat unfortunately didn't exist in the Forbidden City
(same situation with "Zhen Huan"'s Baohuadian Hall which had the same function as the Inner Court (內廷)'s prayer hall)
    3. lol that tired old *cliché trope of the villain basically declaring all his/her misdeeds to the hero* never gets old...and one even wonders why the villain always gets shocked when s/he gets foiled/defeated...
    4. you skipped some important parts:
4.1. *After Hailan glamors herself, she meets Su Lüyun in a pavilion in the Imperial Garden* . It's revealed *Lüyun was the only one who even bothered to check on Hailan's illness* , visiting her at Yanxigong Palace. *She is the first to notice her prettification upgrade* , but also sadly notes that with Ruyi gone, both of them have no one to confide with. *Hailan then offers herself as Lüyun's confidante as gratitude* .
4.2. *In waddles Jin Yuyan and her pointed heavy belly* , who after her "You're pretty (So you think you're pretty)" spiel to Hailan, then *begins her usual modus operandi exposition* about how Langhua and her son 2nd prince Yong'lian are the current trending topic in the Forbidden City (being the legitimate lot), and that *without them they can probably enjoy some happy days* (to which Lüyun voices disapproval at such blasphemy).
4.3. *Lüyun & Hailan then move to Xiefangdian Hall* (Imperial nursery, child daycare, & kindergarten; where 3rd prince Yongzhang is now delegated) and *discuss the trending topic* : how Langhua mistreated him to illness, even sneered at Langhua's blood sutra attempts ("If they worked, why would we need the Imperial physicians for.") and that the Imperial physicians said that they could only hope Yong'lian could make it past the next summer.
4.4. *Hailan then offers to fix Yongzhang's broken cloth doll* , and even sees -her ŕąþîșț- Qianlong outside, who not only notes her prettification, but also inquires as to her living arrangements in Yanxigong Palace. Though he visibly sours when Ruyi was inferred, *Hailan notes to Lüyun that surprisingly Qianlong doesn't look insulted/annoyed.*
4.5. The reed flowers scene is due to another time skip, and when Hailan inquires about winter clothing, her maidservant Yexin notes that the *Interior Department is currently preoccupied with Zhen Huan's longevity (萬壽) blanket* with a Double Ninth Festival (重陽節) deadline, and a further scene with Qin'li (Interior Department eunuch in charge) reveals that the *Embroidery Department's main concern atm is with regards to color schemes* : Zhen Huan rejected a prior submission, *complaining that the phoenix plumage looked tacky* whichever way she saw it (spread out, lying down, in the candlelight).
4.6. During Hailan's "invigorating" embroidery Ted Talk (mainly in relation as to how her proposed color scheme would match Zhen Huan's Buddhist aspirations), *Qianlong then refers to Hailan on first-name basis* , remembering her time as a Prince Manor embroiderer -and not the actual assault he did to her-
4.7. While Hailan underwent the šəҳ burrito treatment, *A'ruo is mistreating a gift of East Sea pearls and ruefully remarks that she feels so beneath Hailan* (and not just in relation to titles alone) despite the many times she "served" Qianlong in the dragon bed
4.8. In a separte scene (immediately after Qi Ru reminds Langhua to keep Yong'lian away from allergens), Qianlong comes by Yanxigong Palace again, and obviously after copulating, *Hailan describes the fragrant herbs she put in the pillow ("As Taught By Ruyi"©)* , which not only turns off Qianlong again (though Hailan notes in voiceover that she does notice he never actually forgot Ruyi at all despite his showy attempts to change subject), but is *a clear indicator of Hailan's complicity in the murder of Yong'lian* (if you base it from the original novel "Ruyi _zhuan_ ", more info in a separate comment)
4.9. 2nd prince Yong'lian was posthumously conferred the title of *Crown Prince Duanhui
4.10. *Jiang Yubin was caught by an elderly eunuch loitering outside Cold Palace* , hence he can no longer go by himself
4.11. By order of Gao Xiyue, *Moxin has bribed the eunuch in charge of the Cold Palace meals to tinker with Ruyi & Suoxin's food* to "let them eat pain"
4.12. Gao Xiyue didn't actually find the unburned joss paper figure, it was actually *Jingse who found it and showed it to Xiyue* (and tbf when the camera lingered too long at the pile of ashes and a sudden wind gust, drama tropes decree that something does not bode well in relation to said scene)
4.13. *Wei Yan'wan succesfully "lobbied" her way out of Hard Labor Department* (though either Chunchan or Lancui was left behind) and is now working at Zhongcuigong Palace under Su Lüyun, specifically as 1st prince Yonghuang's maidservant. During their "business transaction" *Ling Yunche actually asks Ruyi if Su Lüyun is a "decent" mistress"* , and Ruyi allays his fears, vouchsafing Wei Yan'wan's safety.
4.14. When Qianlong visits Zhongcuigong Palace with the children playing, *Qianlong actually notices Wei Yan'wan and even asks for her name, and commends her for aiding Yonghuang's growth.*

1: I stand by what I said! Those measly drops of blood aren’t doing anyone any good! As Chun says later, if that were useful what would we need doctors for? It’s such a superficial show of love, when she could instead actually do things that would help him like decrease his work load or put less pressure on him.
      3: They never learn…

I see Hailan as a good girl turned bad. Kind of a token evil teammate of Ruyi’s but not at all unwavering in her devotion. She does all the dirty work for Ruyi, and not because she was asked more so out of her own loyalty and autonomy. I love characters like her sm and this is why she’s still my favorite despite her problematic nature.
I do think she killed 2nd prince technically, as she unfortunately does end up hurting innocents at time much to Ruyi’s disapproval. But I think that he was going to die anyway because of how terrible a parent Fucka is… she just simply sped up the process or put him our of his misery. As unforgivable her crime is she shows clear remorse over it.

That's the whole point! They didn't want the protagonist to be clearly evil. It's vague enough that you kind of have to put the pieces together. I think an easier way to see it is if the character was Jia, and you saw her make that expression and have that reaction after the 2nd prince died, you would immediately put together that something fishy happened. But with Hailan it's harder because we just don't see her that way.

    Drama Recaps,
I do believe Hailan had a hand in killing the prince, but I don't think that was her intention. Maybe to get him sick for a long period of time until the Emperor forgets about the 2nd prince. The empress did love her son and I mourn for her, however... that's all I feel.
And even if he is dead; with a mother like the empress and life in the palace with all the people after the title of 'Emperor' he might have been safer in the afterlife with the playmates Hailan burned. He would have been used for power his entire life. He was used for power his entire life.

That said, I don't know if I can say I'm on board with Hailan killing him. Even though, like you said, his future was looking dour, that to me just seems like an easy way to justify killing a child. Perhaps he is safer in the afterlife, but at the end of the day, Hailan did what she did to get revenge on his mother. It wasn't out of kindness, or to save him from a life of scheming. I think the real question you should be asking is would the Empress have helped Hailan and took her under her wing like Ruyi did, when she was just a measly embroidery maid assaulted by Hongli.
The answer is a firm no.
It's one of the stark differences between Langua and Ruyi.
Langua surrounds herself / befriends people who already have power or rising to power. Case in point: Gao (due to her father rising through ranks in court), Jia (Yu clan, unafraid to act on behalf of Empress), Wang qin ( senior eunuch) etc.
Also, Ruyi has a spine. She stands up to the Emperor when she sees something is unfair. Langua / Gao only falter the emperor.
Hailan would definitely have been loyal to the Empress had she been the one to help her, but Langua would definitely never do that. Because Hailan up until Ruyi's confinement in cold palace is just a timid First class attendant.
That's probably why Hailan is so loyal to Ruyi. Ruyi took Hailan under her wing when she was the most vulnerable, with no status, no reputed family and nothing that could benefit Ruyi in the present or forseeable future.
Although Ruyi is equally calculative as the Empress, her most royal friends are those she helped when they were at their lowest point. ( Hailan, Suoxin, Rong pei, eunuch Li Yi, Jiang Yubin, Ling Yuche, even Chun)

    Part 2
    Notes:
    1. Referencing "Yanxi Palace":
1.1. The Treatise on the Great Prajñāpāramitā (大智度論 _Dà zhìdù lùn_ "Commentary on the Great Perfection of Wisdom/The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment"), vol. 16: *If you love the Dhārma, use your own skin as paper, your own bones as writing brush, your own blood as ink.* (若實愛法,當以汝皮為紙,以身骨為筆,以血書之,當以與汝!)
Considering these words were from a Brahmin, it's unlikely Langhua even has good karma to begin with since her actions from the start are very un-Dhārmic
1.2 So that the ink quality won't suffer, *cinnabar is gradually added* so that the blood won't coagulate quickly
    2. Regarding the embroidery part, in East Asian iconography *phoenixes are always depicted using five colors (五方色)* , either in contrasting shades or complementary palettes
    3. For confused Westerners, Qingming Festival is basically the *East Asian equivalent of All Saints Day (November 1) and All Souls Day (November 2)*
(and I know because where I live, a predominantly Christian country, the main Chinese Cemetery in the capital usually sees activity spikes during Qingming Festival, similar to (mainly Christian) cemeteries during end October-early November)
    3. "Ruyi _zhuan_ " references (sorry @Drama Recaps for "usurping"):
    3.1. From the original novel + correlation about Hailan's pillow: guz huan ghea ven • -ⱦ ū м 6 ļ ŕ- • com /slash/ post /slash/ 177844337490
    3.2. From the drama novelization, mainly regarding 3rd prince Yongzhang's doll but also additional insight after Hailan's glowup: guzhu ang heaven • -т ụ m̃ β ł ṛ- • com /slash/ post /slash/ 617019955664257024
(context: Liulianzi was ordered to write a "Ruyi _zhuan_ " 2.0 to match the inconsistencies of the drama and her original novel)
    4. This is late, but related to the other previous recap (start of the Cold Palace arc): *Yanxigong & Jing'ren'gong Palaces are actually neighbors in RL* , so the scene where Ruyi & Suoxin were doing the walk of shame and the flashback scene with Yixiu actually took a short while, even given with the massive scale of the Forbidden City

"If the Empress had been the one to save Hailan and show her kindness, would she now be on the side of the bad guys?"
Thinking about it, I don't think that's possible. The whole Ruyi vs. Empress feud started because of the Empress's insecurity over not being the Emperor's first pick as his primary consort. My theory is that the same insecurity would have prompted her to ignore Hailan after the Emperor (back then still the 4th Prince) violated her so as to not have more (official) competition for his favour. Ruyi, on the other hand, is secure enough in the Emperor's love to be more concerned about Hailan's reputation, so she has no problem suggesting that the Emperor officially make Hailan his mistress. This sets off a chain reaction: Hailan becomes loyal to Ruyi, the Empress and Hui (with a little help from Jia) start mistreating Hailan to put pressure on Ruyi, Hailan gets traumatised and wants revenge. Because of this, I struggle to see Hailan as a bad person; she's just another poor, traumatised soul doing what she thinks she must to protect herself and the one she loves most (i.e., Ruyi).
Even if the Empress was more secure, I don't see her doing anything to save Hailan. Let's bear in mind that she's marrying him only for the good of the Fuca clan, who would no doubt tell her to bring glory to the clan by being a good wife (i.e. keeping her mouth shut and doing as she's told while making subtle nudges to advance her family through the ranks in the palace). With such pressure, even if Ruyi wasn't a threat, I doubt the Empress would have time to pay attention to poor Hailan. Ruyi, however, has that luxury because she doesn't give two hoots about the Ula-Nara clan after what happened with her aunt.

The reason why, spoiler alert, after the Empress's death the maid committed suicide almost right after by jumping into the river after doing her bows and prayers. Also even if Hailan DID do it, she would've continued to harm children just like the Empresses in the Palace series. That's just me. Any thoughts?
Edit: And even if it was none of them, it's still the Empress's fault given she studied the boy poor to death. Talk about Tiger Mom.

"Also even if Hailan DID do it, she would've continued to harm children just like the Empresses in the Palace series."
Trueeee. The only thing I will say to the contrary is: the scene where the maid wants to infect 7th prince. Hailan is 100% on board, it's only RuYi's direct order that stops her, right? That does point to her being already OK with killing children. But you're right, she never actually does kill another child so perhaps she wouldn't actually have gone through with it...

The infant’s limbs were thin, but its stomach was as big as a bucket. Its abdomen was a strange, cyan blue color. More terrifying still, the child had the parts of both a man and a woman.
The Emperor’s hands shook with fright, pushing the child away instinctively. Fortunately, WangQin held it firmly. He was terrified as well, his hands shaking uncontrollably. He had no idea what to do with the child in his hands. The Empress caught a clear glimpse of it, and was so shocked that she let out a low cry. The color drained from her face. She held tightly on to the Emperor’s sleeve, terrified. RuYi didn’t know if her face mirrored the horrid expression on the Empress’, but she felt her heart beating out of her chest, as if she couldn’t bear to see what was right in front of her eyes. As a part of the royal family, she knew how difficult it was to carry a baby to term. So many children had died prematurely. But since the start of the Qing Dynasty a century ago, there had never been such a thing as this!
The child’s face was the same as any other, small and flushed, with a little satisfied smile on its face. It wriggled in its swaddling clothes, no different from any other child. But it was clearly intersex, to the shock of them all.
From inside, came the faint voice of a tired woman slowly regaining consciousness. “My child… where’s my child?” the Emperor shook violently as if he were under an unbearable weight. Frightened, grieving eyes peered from his ashen face. But as his eyes fell on the child’s face, the grief was washed away in an instant, leaving only horror and disgust. The woman’s voice came again from the room, tinged with hope and anticipation “Bring the child over so I can take a look…”
It was silent for a moment, no one dared say a word. Then, the Empress acted quickly with cold determination. She turned her head, and the tassels on a silver phoenix ornament in her hair flashed like stars in the night sky, streaking through the dark blue to the dark horizon, disappearing in an instant. There was no hesitation in her voice as she said, decisively “Your majesty, this is an evil omen, an inauspicious monster, it can’t be allowed to live!” The Emperor was lost for words, and nodded vacantly. The Empress immediately turned to WangQin, spitting out her words “Tell everyone that Noble Lady Mei gave birth to a stillborn. A stillbirth is inauspicious, so it was buried immediately!” When she said the word “it”, her voice was cold and unfeeling, as if the child were an insignificant beast whose life could be snuffed out without a care. RuYi couldn’t bear it and said quietly, “Your majesty, the child doesn’t have any other problems. There are just too many…. Why don’t we have the doctor take a look and see if it’s possible to get rid of the extra…”
The Emperor looked at the child’s pink, innocent face and seemed to waver. The Empress turned immediately and slapped RuYi across the face. It was so fast that there was almost no time to react. It seemed to skip past the pain and RuYi only felt a stinging on her face. The Empress looked at her coldly, her eyes like black pebbles in a cold, clear stream, chilling to the bone. “Consort Xian, normally I wouldn’t punish you for making a mistake. But you had better take this slap to heart. This child is an inauspicious demon. If this gets out, it will tarnish the reputation and name of the Qing dynasty. Even your life wouldn’t be enough to make up for that.”
The pain on her cheek slowly sank deeper into the skin. There was a strange coldness on the side of her face that hadn’t been hit. As if there were icicles dripping as they slowly melted into water and slid down her check. It was a piercing cold that made the fine hairs on her body stand up. She realized that the child could not be saved. She didn’t dare put her hand to her face. Bending her knees and bowing slightly, she said “I spoke without thinking, please forgive me.” The Empress raised her head slightly, indicating that she could stand.
The Emperor seemed to regain his composure. Doing his best to stay calm, he asked “In that case, Empress, you mean to…”. The Empress bowed slightly. Her voice was calm and steady. “Noble Lady Mei was unlucky and gave birth to a stillborn. She was not fortunate enough to help your majesty continue your lineage. My condolences to your majesty. I hope that Noble Lady Mei will be lucky enough to provide descendants for the royal family one day.”
The Empress glanced at the child in WangQin’s arms. “Since it was a stillbirth, we should take care of it properly. WangQin, don’t let anyone else know about this. Other than myself, the Emperor, and Consort Xian, you are the only other person here.” WangQin trembled with fear and responded immediately “Yes, your servant understands.” As RuYi watched him turn to leave, she also understood that the child would not survive.

Honestly the empress is a horrible mother, she was so blinded by her insecurity and ambition she couldn't see that she was killing her son. Second Prince is so adorable and I just can't see anyone pushing him like the Empress did. I love the scene when Hailan finds her strength and prepares for war. The scene when she's dolling herself up seems like a woman reborn and sis is not here to take prisoners she's serving death. I could be wrong, since I've been following this drama through the reviews. But from what I've been reading in the comments, is Hailan going to do all the hard work so Ruyi doesn't get her hands dirty? I don't know, this attempt to keep herself pure bothers me and seems very hypocritical to me. Correct me if I'm wrong!

    • @devchekhov7512
      @devchekhov7512 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Ruyi never asks or does a "wink and a nod" to Hailan to carry out underhanded tactics in regards to going on the offensive. Ruyi exercises restraint and tries to stick to a moral compass (as in, don't go after kids). For Hailan, Ruyi is her compass, which means she'll go to any length to protect Ruyi or give her an advantage. There was absolutely no reason for Hailan to go after that prince--to her (and probably most concubines), the prince is an extension of the mother, an asset, not a human being unrelated to the sins of his overbearing mother.

@@devchekhov7512 Thank you very much for the clarification🙂🙂. It makes a lot of feeling looking at yourself that way. It seems that Ruyi have their own moral compass with maxims like the other's life matters, killing is wrong. Hailan seems to be more practical and relative depending on the situation. Put that way, will Ruyi remain true to her moral compass throughout the series? I'm looking forward to seeing this plot. I could be wrong, but from what I've seen so far, having an unshakable moral in this story seems to be a weak point because it puts you at a disadvantage in relation to others willing to do anything. But if you're immoral... you don't win public sympathy. PS: if the text is strange, sorry. English is not my native language😅

The idea of RuYi being a hypocrite is such an important thread going forward. Even if she doesn't tell/approve of Hailan doing evil, she benefits from it. So is she really so "pure" when she relies on someone else getting their hands dirty? Not to mention, when being good means allowing others to get hurt, is it still being good?

@@LittleClarinetPlayer I got a little obsessed with finding stuff out about this time period after watching too many dramas. So the quickest version to explain what I mean is the manchu people were an ethnic minority that took power. If I remember incorrectly they were afraid of Han Chinese people taking control back from them. People who counted as Han Manchu were people who decided to join sides with the Manchu people but were ethnically Han.
There were rules made to keep Manchu in power. These included who could have the highest titles. You had to be Manchu to gain the title of Empress.
If you were anything else you could be noble consort but that was as high as you could ever go. The eight banners were the only people that were considered pure Manchu. If you were ethnically Manchu but you were not eight banners you couldn't even make it into the court.
Women of other groups could be brought in as tribute and become someone belonging to the emperor but they could never be granted the title of Empress while they were alive.
Most crown princes whose mothers died gave them a death title of Empress Dowager but they could not be Empress.
The Han Manchu had their own eight banners but they were not considered I guess you could say canon by the Manchu rulers. With her being of Korean descent she was either in farther down the possibility of succession line than a woman who was Han Manchu.

@@LittleClarinetPlayer their version of a maid isn't what we're thinking of when we think of a maid. All the maids were women who were between the ages of 13 and at most 17 who were part of the eight banners and the emperor selected them as being pretty enough to work in the forbidden city. They had to work for multiple years and by time they left they were considered too old to get married. 😬 At any point the emperor could decide well that one's pretty enough for me to sleep with and they get a title but they are considered just a maid. They're still part of the eight banners but nothing special.
Also all the eunuchs were Han Chinese. The only way a non-manchu man could have any sort of power was to be castrated.

the problem with Sukjong was that partisan factionalism completely dominated the politics of mid-Joseon, in particularly the issue of the royal succession, hence why there were 2 political purges
and tbf, beneath the girl drama, Queen Inhyeon, Jang Ok-jeong (Royal Concubine Hee), & Lady Choi (Royal Concubine Suk) were merely the proxies of the much larger factional rivalry of the Westerners (Queen Inhyeon & Lady Choi) & the Southerners (Jang Ok-jeong)
(and also, it was Sukjong's fault when he decreed that concubines can never ascend to the rank of Queen Consort, which further imperiled the royal succession as most of his successors were borne from concubines)
