    Another option should've been to take him with you and see the "civilized" world as your companion so he can learn with someone who can be trusted and knows the ways of the "civilized" world. This way Follows-chalk can better decide what he would like to do later.

    I think Follows-Chalk is better off in Zion. If there was an option to take him with us so we could show him the ropes it'd be different. But just him all alone, his chances aren't great. The fact that the epilogue says his tribe never saw him again seems to indicate he died, otherwise I can't see him not returning eventually.

    • @teheqlles9036
      @teheqlles9036 6 ปีที่แล้ว +75

      It's also possible that he found the outside world so fascinating that he couldn't go back. Example: some people could totally play Fallout 4 as a farming sim using the settlement building. Heck, think of the Never Leave Sanctuary challenge. Then there are others who would rather explore the world, dangerous or no. For Follows-Chalk it may be that living his whole life at Dead Horse point would be like never leaving Sanctuary- you just get used to living there, don't end up with a reason to leave. Some people can't stand settlements, on the other hand, and perhaps Follows-Chalk is like that person, and can't imagine spending another minute at home (or a useless hub, which as best I can tell is what Sanctuary is if you don't build anything there).
      If my information is off, sorry, never played 4 or watched much to do with settlements. I hope the analogy holds.

      Thinking about it, one should not see Follows-Chalk's wish to expolore from our own modern perspective, but rather take a look at this kind of society, how deadly the world is and the fact that it's only YOUR character that is somehow able to cleave death to all across the Mojave Area. Just about anyone else are fragile like glass in comparison... Just look at how you can destroy a whole Vault full of Fiends. Or how you can wander through the whole Big MT. with killer robots, brainmuddled dudes.
      Follows-Chalk would very much DIE and never be heard from again should he just go wandering. Sure the Wasteland itself isn't as lethally savage as it was back during, like, Fallout 1. Just look at the NCR - a damn nation-in-growth, civilized and set upon the principles of Presidential Elections, those weak of body but strong of mind could manage to survive in such a civil place and be of use for scientific work, the passing on of knowledge in a more strong-minded way, etc.

    Just because Follows-Chalk was never seen again doesn't necessarily mean he met an unfortunate fate.
    Perhaps he just continued to wander and adventure. Perhaps he met a nice girl and settled down somewhere. Maybe he found a community that needed him and decided to remain to protect it.

    Hey Oxhorn, remember the thing Joshua said about the .45 autos being designed by a member of his tribe 400 years ago? Well he was referring to the pistols, which are some model of Colt 1911, probably the 1911A1, being designed by the great John Moses Browning, who was an LDS member from Utah, specifically Ogden. The pistol was designed in 1907, adopted by the US military in 1911 (hence the name), and was only replaced in 1992 by the Beretta M9. It is still in production in our timeline and is one of the most prolific semiauto pistols in the world. In the Fallout timeline, it was produced for civilians until the bombs fell. It is a fairly fitting choice as it fires the powerful .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) cartridge and is know for it's durability and reliability. It is also fitting because Saint Browning (as he is known in the firearms community) was a Mormon Gunsmith from Ogden. I think that Obsidian's choice of weapon was a very nice touch. This isn't the pistol's first outing in a Fallout game as it was in Fallout 1 & 2 if my memory is correct, and I know for a fact that it was in both Fallout:Tactics and Fallout Brotherhood of Steel. Browning's work can be found else in New Vegas, as the 9mm pistol in the main part of the game is modeled on the Browing Hi-Power, another JMB design, this one from 1935, though it was his last, as he died while working on it and work continued on it by his assistant, Dedonie Saive (I almost certainly spelled that wrong), as Browning moved to Belgium between WW1 & WW2. I thought you might like a little bit of info about the history behind Graham's remark and just wanted to fill you in on some background info.

      @davidmiller9485 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      i know this post is a year old but... the 1911 is still used by both military and police forces. they get to choose which side arm they want. Too many soldiers were complaining that the M9 didn't have the stopping power of the 1911, whether it's real or perceived is moot. It was decided to give the choose to maintain combat morale. Very much like applique armor on tanks during WWII.

      2311-2281=30
      So Joshua rounded up 30 years and implied that the firearm design was from about 400 years ago, which would be true. Slightly different semantics but I understand your point.
      If you calculate the fact that Browning started designing the 1911 as early as 1907, then we’re really saying that Joshua rounded up only 26 years. So he wasn’t being precise obviously, but I think Joshua was speaking in a more general sense. 🤷‍♂️

      Follow-Chalk fanfiction "Best Ending": The Courier words of generosity convinced Follow-Chalk to join alongside him/her and teach him everything about the "civilized" world by traveling together in the Mojave Wasteland and NCR territory.
      After several months of experiencing everything through the eyes of the Courier. Follow-Chalk and the Courier eventually went their separate ways.
      Follow-Chalk decided to join the Happy Trails Caravan, being known for being a fearless and strong mercenary for hire. Making a infamous name for himself in the Mojave Wasteland and cities in the wild west.
      After obtaining a large sum of caps, high quality supplies and honest- heart allies. Follow-Chalk and friends created their very own settlement that welcomed morally righteous tribes and travelers alike.
      Leaving the traveling life behind him in order to raise his new family and naming one his first born son after Joshua Graham and named other son/daughter after the Courier.

Of the two options given, convincing him to stay with his tribe may disappoint, but it is the best for his long term happiness and likely survival. We should have had an option to bring him back with us to the Mohave after the end of Honest Hearts and act as a mentor to him. I influenced Follows Chalk to stay in Zion.
    For my first playthrough, I played on Hard Core mode and the difficulty really had a good effect on me. Which basically turned the game into a real life organism thing where I had to manage multiple resources and be strict about how I play (I rarely engaged in combat because of how expensive bullets were. So I preferred to talk about my problems and peacefully resolve them where I could.)
    So basically the reason I told him to stay, was out of the fear of how easy it was for anyone to get killed in Fallout. So Follows Chalk would probably die prematurely before finding anything of value out in his travels.

    One option I would have liked for Follows-Chalk's ending would be for the Courier to act as his guide through the Mojave. It's fitting, since he is your guide for a good while in Zion, and the Courier could teach him anything he needs to know about the Mojave- how money works, how to avoid swindlers, what to do about radiation poisoning, even all about Ghouls and Super Mutants. Then perhaps he could return to his tribe a wiser & more worldly man, instead of simply vanishing...

      The Courier should've had the option to take Follow-Chalk as a companion so he can understand the "civilized" world and survive within a apocalyptic wasteland. I think the Courier and Follow-Chalk relationship would be like a mentor and student. Until they finally went their own separate ways. When Follow-Chalk learns almost everything from the Courier lessons and morals.

I know that would require the game to allow you to bring back companions, and his perk would need to change. But I feel that would be the one choice that'd make the most sense.
    Plus, it open the door to bringing back Christine and Ulysses. Both of which would have very interesting impacts on the game world.

      Courier of The Wastes Arcade and Raul were actually my favorite companions even though they seem to be the least popular vanilla F:NV companions. Raul's repair abilities and adeptness with revolvers are super useful and Arcade's companion quest gives my absolute favorite power armor in the game since I'm all about the energy weapons. Plus I like having the choice to be able to make Arcade Caesar's slave with my evil Legionaire character. Lastly, both of their back stories are pretty cool. • @anderseckstrand7033
      @anderseckstrand7033 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Naw man, he got HIMSELF killed!
      .......look
      ...All the courier did was suggest to Follows-Chalk that he see the civilized lands outside of Zion Canyon for himself, to learn from it.
      I don’t remember the courier encouraging Follows-Chalk to abandon his family and tribe, nor did the courier suggest Follows-Chalk try to bring the ways of the civilized world back to the tribals of Zion Canyon..........those are both choices Follows-Chalk made on his own volition.
      I don’t need or want a lecture about, every action has consequences, or, yeah but by telling Follows-Chalk to explore the outside civilized lands, you set him on the path that would lead to those later decisions blah blah blah blah.....
      When I told Follows-Chalk it would be best for him to see the civilized lands for himself, I didn’t even know he had a family! I mean it’s not like you get to meet or see them, and do we even know how big his family is? Is he married? How many children does he have? How vital is Follows-Chalk to the rest of the Dead Horses?
      And finally, it’s fair for the courier to assume that Follows-Chalk is mature and smart enough to know the consequences of giving into your personal wanderlust over the responsibilities you have to your family and tribe. It’s not fair to assume that the player should have known that Follows-Chalk would simply abandon his family and tribe to go fulfill some selfish wanderlust desire. Because if we, the player, had foresight that this would be what Follows-Chalk eventually does, we might have suggested something else to him.
      Honestly Follows-Chalk’s ending is one that doesn’t make much sense to me. We never truly learn what Follows-Chalk’s drive is, what his intentions are for his tribe after he returns from the civilized lands, and what ultimately compels Follows-Chalk to leave a second time and never return. 🤷‍♂️
      Kinda frustrating if you ask me.

  • @silentsnake31
    @silentsnake31 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think its best if you tell follows-chalk to travel out and see the world. My reason being is that he feels similar to how we (the players) felt when we took control of both the vault dwellers of fallout 1 and 3, set out on a journey into a world that we/they have never experienced before. It helped shaped the main characters into who they are today.

    • @kingnamor7777
      @kingnamor7777 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I also agree with your statement. That his desire for adventure and traveling. Is no different than the heroes of Fallout 1-3 and the Courier. Follow-Chalk should also be free to decide his own destiny. Whether it will bring him happiness or sorrow.

    Fun fact: The head writer's favorite NV DLCs were Big Mountain & Honest Hearts. He said HH was his favorite story to write & Big Mountain was the most fun to write. He also wrote & is writing the DLCs for HORIZON:Zero Dawn. Lots of influence from Honest Hearts, most notably the Sorrows & The Father in the Cave.
    IMO: Lonesome Road> Honest Hearts> The Pitt > Far Harbor> Big Mountain> Point Lookout> Mothership Zeta> Dead Money> Operation: Anchorage> Broken Steel> Nuka World> Automotron> .
    If I could add DLCs these would be my pitches:
    Vehicles. Tribals on Dirt Bikes. Zion Valley. Being invaded by NCR pioneers & ghoul survivors of the Lonesome Road. Determine their fate & the fate of Zion Valley. Then it's attacked by super mutants & BoS who eventually blow up the valley if you don't stop both sides. Pick who wins.
    Return to Far Harbor. New map, deeper inland. VERY swampy. There is a cult of Super Mutant Atoms that is raising a monster from another dimension (Titan / C'Thulhu). You need to sabotage the ritual. New settlements include Super Mutants & Synth settlers.
    Fallout with Zeta aliens. This is more vague. More-or-less Fallout 3's Zeta Invasion but I imagine there being Noble aliens & 'Killer' aliens. Settlements getting attacked, you help, you get captured. Gives us a reason to park a giant ship on the moon & for there to be an option to explore the whole damn moon in 360* & set up settlements on the moon, in bio-spheres. After the liberation of the ship. This is for laughs.
    Nuka World is being attacked by the Elite Gunners. Imagine a warfare of gunners vs minuteman, vs raiders, vs super mutants, vs new comers Tunnelers from Lonesome Road. Decide who wins, or abandon Nuka World to the endless horde of Tunnelers. Some as big as Behemoths.
    Robot Invasion. Skynet 3.0. It's a Terminator who is like IAM the A.I. from I Have no Mouth & I Must Scream. It's the size of liberty prime & an archetype like The Master & IAM.
    Return to the Sierria Madre. Christine needs help defending the Sierria Madre & keeping it supplied & the cloud in check. Similar to how Far Harbor air-filters get attack & destroyed. Just a whole damn mess of Fallout NPCs show up. Go crazy with it.

    Even knowing how both ending slides play out, I still think convincing Follows-Chalk to explore the wasteland is the better option.
    While he does quarrel with his family, and does not return, it also does something good for the tribe as a whole. Other members, hearing of Follows-Chalk, will then know that, if they too have the same desire that he did, they too could explore the wastes.
    Convincing Follows-Chalk not only allows him to pursue his dreams, but it shows the rest of his tribe that they have options, choices to make about their future. Wasteland life may not be perfect, but then again neither is tribal life.

    I consider that having Follows-Chalk stay with his family is a small risk big reward decision but exploring the wastes and civilized lands is an entirely new situation which is rewarding in itself. Also Follows-Chalk would have the same chances that almost all the player characters through all of the fallout games would have. I mean the Lone Wanderer came out of the vault with very little experience in general and learned as he/she went on (and I know you are the player character so you pretty much have an advantage over every npc but I think you get what I mean)

    Ahhhh dammit...I didn't wanna think about all the bad things that could've happened to follows-chalk, in my mind I thought he was gonna spend a long life exploring the wonders of the wastes, but it is more likely he would've gotten killed somehow in New Vegas. I like to think that his tattoos made him look more intimidating, so people didn't really mess with him, but who knows? Goddamn I love this game!

    I think honest hearts is very sad, at the end, the tribals change for ever, specialy the sorrows; mirror of the native american's lives changing forever with the arrival of the white(legs) men....

    I really enjoyed my time with Follows-Chalk, and seeing him get all starry-eyed about civilization and wanting to see the sights, I wanted him to experience that for himself. My first playthrough of Honest Hearts, I encouraged him to go, hoping at the end, he might have an option to leave with me, become a permanent follower and I could be a guide for him - help him understand the Mojave. Really, a missed opportunity by the devs, I think.

      The Courier should've had the option take Follow-Chalk as companion so he can understand the "civilized" world and survive within a apocalyptic wasteland. I think the Courier and Follow-Chalk relationship would like a mentor and student. Until they finally went their own separate ways. When Follow-Chalk learns almost everything from the Courier lessons and morals.

      Follow-Chalk decided to became a trader and fearless mercenary for hire.

    Each DLC should have had a permanent Companion afterwards.
    Honest Hearts gives you Follows-Chalk (or Joshua Graham?), Dead Money gives you Dean Domino or God/Dog, Old World Blues gives you Roxie (and potentially have the sentient Stealth Suit take control of a Lobotomite?) and of course Lonesome Road should give you Ulysses (and potentially the 2nd ED-E?)
    Each Faction should also have a Companion.
    The Followers of the Apocalypse, The Brotherhood of Steel and The NCR are clear due to Arcade, Veronica and Boone
    The Kings gives us Pacer (though Rex already technically covers them), The Legion gives us Vulpes Inculta, Mr. House gives us Victor/Yes Man, etc.

    Lightning stick is a stun baton like the ones used by NCR MPs on the Strip ya goof. They can sometimes be found in random loot crates in Zion's ranger stations.

    I encouraged Follows-Chalk to explore the world. I like to think his time with the courier taught him enough to survive wandering the "civilized lands." I also like to think he saw the world and eventually went back to his family after satisfying his wanderlust.

    I always wished you could take Follows-Chalk with you after you're finished with the story in Zion. I agree wholeheartedly that he is far too naive to survive on his own in the Mojave or anywhere else besides Zion, really, but I always felt like the Courier could have guided him in that respect; shown him that the world is rough and that people while almost always try to take advantage of you, but that there is good to be found if you look hard enough. Maybe that's too complicated a mechanic for a DLC character, but I think it would have been worth it...You'd really just have to give him a few unique lines when you show up at different, iconic places in the Mojave for it to feel authentic enough.

    I talked him into leaving to follow his dreams cause what else does that world have but one's dreams. To me when he lost his wanderlust it just meant his dreams died and his spirit was broken.

    Follows-Chalk was talking about a cattle prod. It's a non-lethal weapon found in some of the ranger stations that dot Zion. Just some info you might want to know.
