Hi Mand, just wanted to say I love your videos, its great to finally find a TH-cam channel that cooks good hearty meals and puddings like my mum used to make. You're giving me some wonderful ideas. Could you possibly make a treacle tart? or something similar x.
OMG, As soon as I saw Jam Rolly Poly, I knew what it is, I can almost taste it and havent had one in as long as I can remember and I am now 62 and left the UK to come to Aus when I was 3. Suet pastry comming out very soon!
I live in Australia and am 73 years old. I haven't had jam roly poly since the 1960s. First my Grandmother used to make it when I was young in the 1950s and my Mum used to make it too but when I became a teenager somehow our diet changed and Mum no longer made the very yummy jam roly poly and the delicious custard that goes with it. Brings back happy memories.
Just out of curiosity, did your family originate from here as this is such an old classic British pudding and in some countries you can’t even buy suet?
you have just made a pensioner cry, took me right back to school days, the recipe is strait forward to follow and re-awakened my love for cooking keep up the great work
I've been cooking your panacklty and this jam rolly polly with homemade custard. I can't wait for my tea and me mother in laws can't wait for me to go over tomorrow with some of each for her 😂😂❤ tyvm Dinner Lady. Xx
@@stephenleader-s9x Very simple to make, evaporated milk and brown sugar whisked until thick and ribbons, poured into a pastry case and baked untill set.....
I am so delighted to have found your channel, everything you cook looks and am sure tastes delicious, all my favourite food and happy memories, I can actually toast it on screen. Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful recipes. ❤️

Dinner Lady you rock! I’m so glad I stumbled upon your videos. I’m hooked! My grandfather was born in Southampton in 1901 and emigrated to Canada then NY in 1917. He was just a young lad. He ended up becoming a chef. I miss all his recipes. I made your Toad in the Hole and Pigs in a Blanket last night. It was great. My neighbors from Columbia really thought it was frog meat! Their faces were pure shock when I named the dish. We laughed after I clarified. Anyway you are the best and so is your husband. Love his T-shirt. You call the cling wrap, plastic wrap, Saran wrap or film anything you want! Ignore the busybodies. Now tell me, what is suet? Does anyone know if there is an equivalent of it in America? I want to make this! Thanks again, you are the best!!!!
Just watched this after watching your Manchester tart and my mouth is watering!! This looks just lovely, absolutely delish! Brings back memories! And your lovely hubby doing the tasting!! He’s got a great job there!! 😄 So comforting watching your recipes, you are a breath of fresh air. Thank you.

Ian is such a lucky bloke. Oh goodness this looks lovely. Ive not made it for years but it was a great treat for my children as they were growing up as it was for me when mum made it. I even used my mums table spoons when cooking even now after my children have grown up.
Made this the other day and it came out really nice. I used 50g caster sugar instead of a tbsp. Good recipe to use up the last of the jam from several jars. The bairn loved it.

I miss my grandmother's puddings she always made sure we watched and learned how to make them. Nothing tasted quite like grandmothers cooking, but it's brilliant to see you doing the cooking old school style, so much more satisfying. Love it❤❤❤
My two favourite things from childhood were Manchester tart and Russian slice (I think that was its name-I've not seen it for 40 years). Manchester tart was sweet pastry filled with custard with a layer of jam at the bottom and sprinkled with dessicated coconut. Russian slice was something to use up stale sponge-I think it was sponge crumbled up, mixed with jam and melted butter with rum or rum flavouring. I think the base was either a thin layer of sponge or pastry-my gran had loads of Be-Ro recipe books and I think the Russian slice was in that.
I loved school custard and discovered their secret taste when I was making pudding for my kids. I'd run out of milk so used evaporated milk ( used pasturised in rice) and it was awesome!
Haven't had jam rolypoly in 65 years. In fact I know no one who cooks with suet these days. My mum and dad were both of English descent, and I see this as a traditional English recipe. Mum made this often when I was little and it was a family favorite. Modestly priced, went a long way, and filled our tummys. You fill me with nostalgia......
Just love your no nonsense way of doing things and the slip ups not often shown ,remind me of my mother s cooking a gem of a cook still. Make most of my food .Next one the rolls polly pud .
Thankyou, I have been trying to find a recipe for Granny’s roly poly she used to make us. The only thing differently she did was sprinkle sugar over the roly poly before she cooked it. She also made an orange roly poly with marmalade and orange slices inside .
I've got to say Ian is the best fed husband in Wallsend 👍😄 Thanks again that jam roly poly just took me back. Love to you both. Enjoy the rest of the weekend 💗xx

Hi Mandy and Ian, I made the jam roll poly and custard today, first time ever making custard from scratch. The jam roll poly looked a bit big just for the two of us so I reduced everything by a third and I wanted to try out the HySapientia. I put a sandwich tin full of boiling water in the mesh basket on the lowest shelf and the roly poly directly on the middle shelf. I cooked on the bake setting and checked it after 25 minutes but it was nowhere near done, I put it back in on airfry at 160° for another 20 minutes and it was probably a wee bit overdone, but trial and error.
