My 1st Harley was a 1986 883 I bought used 2 days out of the Army infantry. Rode that bike all over the US, many many states. Have had 9 HDs...just sold off my M8 Limited bagger last year after a 2500 mile trip on it...I got to thinking on that trip I missed a slim, light, agile Sportster! I got an old evo sportster and a wad of cash for my Limited...very, very happy. After 40+ years of riding bigger HDs...the Sportster has returned my joy of pure simple riding. Happy to sub with your obvious love of the Lord! Be Blessed, brother. 👊🙏

Hi .Great to see another Christian walking the walk and witnessing to the Lord and His faithfullness and having fun riding a Harley. God bless and keep cruising!!
Dude I knew this was going to be a great video at 0:44 “I’m gonna trust in the Lord as I always do!” The most excellent statement! We from England and we trusted in the Lord in 2008 and drove across the US, coast to coast, San Fran to NYC. We didn’t know what to expect, but He provided all the way. 🙌🏻🙏🏻😎👍🏻
I am getting my 52 year old, bobbed triumph ready for a big trip. No electronics, kick start only, one carb. Simple tech I have been using since the 1970’s.
Found this searching for people touring on sportys. I have a 2008 with 11k miles I just picked up and I love riding it. I’m in CO and can’t wait to take up the mountains next spring/summer. Pikes Peak here we come! God Bless my friend.
My favorite bike ever made, early sportsters, I had an 883 Hugger and it was my favorite bike I ever owned, lost it during the pandemic because we needed food and winter coats and boots. One day I will be back on a sporty. God bless you and protect you.
I live in Washington State but my heart still lives in Colorado where I was born. Went to school in Gunnison. Every summer i ride to Gunnyville on my Victory. Just for fun i am going to take my 1200 XLC this summer. You have inspired me. God bless!😊
Thanks for sharing that ! Hope you have a great trip on the Sporty. I love Gunnison and the Taylor Park area. God bless you also and thanks for watching !
Just a brief update. I did it! I rode my 2013 1200 XLC from Cheney, WA to Gunnison in 2 days. I loved it. Comfortable, dependable, and turned a lot of heads. Must admit that I put a Russell Day long seat on it with backrest. Neither my butt nor my back hurt for the entire trip. Thanks for the inspiration. Made it home in two days as well. God is good! By the way, did the trip at 77 years young 😊.
Use royal purple .it Nocks out a lot of the top end noise. 20W 50 / 75 80 for the primary. Works better then AMSOL for noise. I've tried them both on my 96 evo sportster. And my 2000 wide glide.
Nice trip report, man! Looks like you had a great time. 1) A word about gas mileage: All of my (3) stock 883's got 55-60 mpg. My '86 883 with the 2.2 tank would go on reserve at about 95 miles. My current 1998 1200 only gets about 50 mpg. Then again, I live in relatively flat Florida. To get the most gas mileage out of a Harley, you must must MUST not "blip" the throttle at traffic lights and such. A lot of Harley riders do that subconsciously, without even knowing they're doing it and without thinking about the consequences. But each "blip" squirts gas right into the carburetor throat. Your 1200 seemed to be giving you about 45 mpg. That might improve as the engine breaks-in. If you're putting 1.8 gallons in, then you still had nearly 1/2 gallon left - enough for 20 miles or so. Harley makes a "king" tank that holds 3.3 gallons. Much nicer for long rides! It will bolt right on with no mods needed other than moving the petcock from the right to the left. 2) I've had that same seat you have on one of my Sportsters - WORST SEAT EVER. I researched and found a flatter seat with less of a scoop, so I could slide back and forth a little on long trips. 3) Loosen the banjo fitting where the brake line attaches to the caliper, and then swivel it so the hose moves away from the fender. My '86 883 did the same thing as yours - pissed me right off. 3) Throttle friction lock: Just use enough friction to keep the throttle from closing so you don't have to hold it open. You don't have to lock the throttle in place. Experiment! I love Sportsters, and I'll own one until the day I die. I think they're great bikes that get a bad rap from people who don't understand them, what they were designed for, and the limitations they have. You just proved that a Sportster **can** make a long-distance trip. Yes, they're a little squirrely on the Interstate because they're so light. But even an 883 will go ALL DAY LONG at 80 mph. I've proved that. If I wanted a big, heavy Interstate cruiser like a Honda Gold Wing, I'd buy an Accord. The Sportster may not be the best long-distance highway flyer on the market. But when I get to my destination, you know what? I want to ride a Sportster, not a Gold Wing.
Thanks for watching and for offering up a great comment! You clearly have a lot of experience with these bikes! After this trip I tuned and re-jetted the carb which resulted in more power and a bit more fuel economy. I also immediately purchased a gel-filled Saddleman solo seat.. what a difference! You are spot on regarding the front brake line, (among other things) - all I needed to do was rotate the banjo bolt and I would have avoided rubbing paint off the fender. I did go ahead and replace the brake line with a braided steel version and all is well now. I do still have some electrical issues I need to sort out. Currently I have no right side turn signals and the small lights below the speedo/ tach, (neutral/ oil pressure/ etc.) lights are not working. All in all, however I am really enjoying this Sporty! They are extremely versatile bikes. People like to poke fun because they are the "little Harley", but they can't wipe the smile off my face after carving some canyon roads ;) Thanks again, ride safe, and God bless you !
I have a1999 883 Sportster.l have had my Sportster for 25 years and 400,000+ miles on the original engine and 37 back tires and 18 front tires and 3 belts in 25 years. I've just about made up my mind to get rid of my 07 103" Street Glide because my spine is very very messed up after a serious injury year's ago that retired me leaving me disabled & one of the problems I've now got is I can't handle a big heavy bike now. Great Video and awesome find. The break and speedo line on those old Sporties had a metal thick wire looking piece they routed through to keep them away from the fender (the bracket u showed later in vid is the one) . I found my 93 Sporty with 243 original miles on it three years ago in Santa Fe New Mexico on consignment at the dealership there. Couldn't resist the buy and was able to negotiate a fair price. I don't trade my vehicles and just keep up the maintenance to keep them running so I still have my first bike I ever bought, which is my 2001 Sporty I purchased brand new. These old Evos run forever when properly taken care of. They are not great performers, but just keep on ticking like a timex watch😎👊🤘
I haven't watched to the end yet but the intake carb to manifold seal is know to dry rot and cause lean issues. Ride it too long and it can cause damage
Manifold gaskets to the engine also. My 98 sporty has rubber ones and after sitting so long before I got it, they were both shot. Difficult to replace also. Have to cut hex wrench and make your own tool to get manifold off. Not fun.
Awesome trip, I have a sportster 48 which has the same size tank as yours and want to make a long trip this coming year could you please share the links for the sissy bar bags and fuel bottles, thanks in advance.
Thanks for the comment! The sissy bar came with the bike and the soft bags came off of my old Buell- I doubt they are still available. Here is a link to the fuel bottle though: Ride safe and God bless you!Motorcycle Emergency Petrol Can a.co/d/eJqTCe5
@davidperezmtb4275 just a cheap dry bag from the "Sportsmans Guide" company. It is there house brand "Guide Gear". It's been used on several X-country trips now and has held up great.
Have you done anything to the bike? Did you sell it? Larger tank and hammer 1275 cylinders with stage one intake/exhaust makes for an excellent motorcycle to ride anywhere.
Next time I suggest zip ties. As for the hail, I'd say start traveling with a tarp. You can always affix it to your surroundings & give yourself some shelter.
Sure thing! It's just a cheap one from Amazon, but worked great and I like that it shows battery voltage. Here is the link: a.co/d/ersi0nk Thanks for watching!
Hi mate I’ve just got me a 2017 sportster classic and it’s done 2300 miles you will find it’s the drive chain making the tap noise mine does it just remember your riding a v twin you will here lots of little noises with standard exhaust pipes on and your bike as only done 400 of miles it’s got to bed in no matter how old the bike is
The little I have read about Sportsters they appear to be sensitive with tune ups. Many reports of having to tweak the engine to find its best sweet spot.
That gelpad will pack down and feel like a board also. If I remember correctly I'm thinking there's a seat called something like "Airdogs" or something like that, maybe. The air cushion will be your best bet for the long rides. Man I'm wanting to go on a long ride now. Hopefully somehow I can do it again someday.

It's the lifters cause it sat with the old oild and got cloged up..and you went to the Stealers'...instead of some cool indepentdent'shop...where they will treat you like a friend instead of a victum
When the bible went on to say that Jesus was God, all that really became nonsensical..... j.s. gotta think about those things if you're gonna think about it.
First of all, I'm terribly sorry to hear this and want to offer condolences. Its a classic question, and a tough one, "If God is real and if He is good, then why is there so much suffering and loss and evil in this world?" The truth is that God has given every one of us free will. He didn't make us as robots, we can all make our own choices. And because so many of us choose sin, this world is full of hardship. Our choices affect us and those around us, probably a lot more than we often realize. Someone chose to drive drunk and the consequences of that were terrible. God allows us to make our own choices during our life on this earth and often times the results are devastating, but we can also choose to follow His ways and the result is a life filled with peace, joy, and love. The Good News is that Jesus came to this earth and lived a sinless life, the only man to ever do that, and He offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for all of our sins, all of our bad choices. If we only believe in His work and accept His forgiveness, we WILL receive eternal life. You can spend all of eternity in a place with no sin, no death, no loss, no suffering. There will still be plenty of pain during our time on this earth, but when you have the hope of heaven, you can take all of these things in stride. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss and I don't mean to downplay the pain it has caused in any way, but I want you to know the truth that God is still on the throne and He will make all things new in the end. God bless you friend.
@@WildFaith...so well put...and true. My best friend got rear ended on his bike and killed also. He was old, so am I, and so was the driver that killed him. Remember, brother, that bike is carbureted. So the higher up you go the more power it’s going to lose unless you change out the jets.
My 1st bike was a 1984 XLX 61. I rode it from ft Walton beach fl to luttrell TN and back.
Great Video and awesome find. The break and speedo line on those old Sporties had a metal thick wire looking piece they routed through to keep them away from the fender (the bracket u showed later in vid is the one)
Thank you!
That's awesome you found such a low miles sporty... and at a dealership no less !! Thanks for sharing and ride safe. God bless !
Rev the bike and put your hand on the gas cap and see if your noise goes away- Lefty (Under the Blood M/M)
Here is a link to the fuel bottle though:
Ride safe and God bless you!Motorcycle Emergency Petrol Can a.co/d/eJqTCe5
Hi@@WildFaith What about the bag you use to carry the fuel bottles
@davidperezmtb4275 just a cheap dry bag from the "Sportsmans Guide" company. It is there house brand "Guide Gear".
It's been used on several X-country trips now and has held up great.
@@WildFaith super, thank you for the information, I liked the fact that you can carry the fuel bottles and tighten them with the strap
amen brother
GODBLESS
Have you done anything to the bike? Did you sell it? Larger tank and hammer 1275 cylinders with stage one intake/exhaust makes for an excellent motorcycle to ride anywhere.
I've just done a 2 into 1 exhaust, re-jet and progressive suspension so far. Thanks for the tips!
Next time I suggest zip ties.
As for the hail, I'd say start traveling with a tarp. You can always affix it to your surroundings & give yourself some shelter.
Are you from jersey I was nice bike good luck
Yep, originally from Jersey, been in CO about 15 years
Dave, could you tell me what phone/usb charger you added to this bike for the ride?
Sure thing! It's just a cheap one from Amazon, but worked great and I like that it shows battery voltage. Here is the link: a.co/d/ersi0nk
Thanks for watching!
@@WildFaith Thank you Dave!
Hi mate I’ve just got me a 2017 sportster classic and it’s done 2300 miles you will find it’s the drive chain making the tap noise mine does it just remember your riding a v twin you will here lots of little noises with standard exhaust pipes on and your bike as only done 400 of miles it’s got to bed in no matter how old the bike is
Amen
The little I have read about Sportsters they appear to be sensitive with tune ups. Many reports of having to tweak the engine to find its best sweet spot.
That gelpad will pack down and feel like a board also. If I remember correctly I'm thinking there's a seat called something like "Airdogs" or something like that, maybe. The air cushion will be your best bet for the long rides. Man I'm wanting to go on a long ride now. Hopefully somehow I can do it again someday.
You're right about the gel pad, I haven't tried the AirHawk thing. Just swapped the stock seat for a Saddleman and it's 1,000% better !!
@@WildFaiththe Airhawk is definitely a Godsend ! You sit alot higher, which is weird at first, but your butt and back will feel NO PAIN....on any trip. Love mine.
How rough was the vibration?
Pretty rough ! ..you do get used to it, either that or your limbs just go numb 🤣 Since then I added a gel filled Saddleman seat and it help a lot
Nice video. May I ask where you get the fuel bottle? Thx
Thanks!
Amazon. They seem to work well, never leaked 👍
Moister in the engine may be,its been sitting a long time. Change oil a few times.
Power band on a 4 stroke lol
Sportsters engines are known to be noisy
Ate you still around?
Make sure the oil cooler is flowing at temp.look inside the resivor and watch the oil flow, should be a oil cooler installed in the front of the motor, get it sreviced
That's a regulator rectifier you see.
@@davidbrown6353 no shit
I thought I would watch a bike video. I didn't know I was expected to spend an hour in your church. Looks like a good Sporty, put some miles on it to break it in and with a few adjustments it should last you a long time. Hope the trip went well. I made it to the 27 minute mark but I can't take anymore praise to a figment of your imagination. Peace.
Relax atheist. Don’t like it move on.
@warrenp2022 why do you care?
John 15:18 (ESV): 18 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.
@@DabsNanime eh, some folks are very verbal about it...I keep my relationship with the Almighty strictly to myself. He did alot of praising, but hell, it seemed to have worked. No crash, no blown tires, no hit deer, no close calls...can't beat that for such a long trip.
@@leamonreynoldshave to remember that. Pretty priceless. Thanks. 😊
Quad cams, plus windshield funnels nois rite to ya. stop listning and tart riding😊
Wear earplugs, when something breaks or falls off then address whatever it is. You can chase phantom Harley noise till it drives you bonkers.
Man I like you. Yes I know you've said PTL many times during this video but as you & a whole lot of us know, It's ALL about The LORD. We thank the Lord when life goes well but when it doesn't go smoothly we often don't understand because His ways are higher than ours but when we've got a handle on our relationship with the Lord & understand there Are NO oops found in GOD we then place ourselves in Daddy's awesome care & simply trust & rest in His loving security. I like you man. You are family.☝️ Oh aw & one of my round trips to the 84th Laconia Ralley from Western Kentucky was 2600+ then more riding around. I hope I can manage one more trip cause there ain't nothing like traveling on 2 wheels. Thanks for the cool video story. By the way, I had to subscribe because anyone that's cup Is Running Over with The Water Of Life that no doubt covers many around you, I had to subscribe. I enjoyed it! 😁 Thanks brother.☝️🇺🇲
Amen!! Thanks for the amazing comment brother!
All Glory to God.
My brothers 89 had a similiar noise. Was a broken ring
That's a normal sound of a sportster up on the top end
It's the lifters cause it sat with the old oild and got cloged up..and you went to the Stealers'...instead of some cool indepentdent'shop...where they will treat you like a friend instead of a victum
Wow came for the motorcycle, left because religion!
Hi it’s me again should of carried on looking at vid sorry
The noise is normal, most 883s and 1200s sound like sewing machines.
Don't praise God unless your Faith is TRUE!
What the heck brought that up??
Sporty motors are noisy. Turn the throttle, u can't hurt it! Lol
Ha! Best advice yet!!
HOPE YOU WERE USING A PREMIUM HIGH OCTAIN GASOLINE, THAT MIGHT BE THE REASON TOUR VALVES ARE CHATTERING,
maybe mouse nest in pipes,,,blew out ,,, had it happen
2k trip but barely saw a mile of it - mostly all of your talking head lol
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🛵
Sorry, but it looks like really old school rigit bike for so soft guy 😅
Wants to feel free and fool - feel vibration always 😂
Check your hair, lol. Buddy just ride. Let's see u drive
When the bible went on to say that Jesus was God, all that really became nonsensical..... j.s. gotta think about those things if you're gonna think about it.
Not much of a video if you don’t even ride it in the video..felt more like an overly religious commercial..
Not everyone can afford a GoPro...I know I can't and just use my phone for video.
A very long video about a motorcycle trip, with no actual motorcycle riding.
Bait n switch religion. Booooo
Where was God when my friend got killed by a drunk driver on his bike
God works in mysterious ways, as the saying goes. I kinda envy him because he made it to Heaven before me, and left me to deal with this goofy world.
Stupid superstitious idiocy
I watched about the first 6 minutes of your video and got really tired of you constantly sticking your religious beliefs in my face. Keep religion out of your videos if you want people to watch them
Cute bike. Tiny bike. Get a bigger bike.
Just have to lean out the fuel at higher elevations
