  • Upgrading your Sportster's camshaft allows you to put your power delivery where you ride most. No matter how you ride your bike there is a camshaft out there that will put your max power where you can get the most out of it. Harley-Davidson already puts a very nice cam in the Sportsters but it's mainly for low end and mid range power. Most cams take from the bottom end and give to the top end, but there are a couple that add power everywhere. Is it worth the cost of changing camshafts on your 883 Sportster, how much power can you gain on your 1200 Sportster? We'll look at the numbers and see what a cam swap can do for your motorcycle.

    I appreciate you watching and supporting the channel! What kind of cam would you go for? Would you go for a low to mid range cam or get one for top end?

    • @sinkandrelax

      Low to mid. Much more useful for urban riding.

      It's hard to find to beat the factory W cam for low to mid. Most Sportster cams rob the low and mid for top end. Hammer's 570 is about the only cam l have found that beats the factory cam everywhere.

      Stock cams for reliability. Stage 1 pipes/cleaner/tune. But how about skipping Stage 2 and 3 and adding Stage 4 ported and shaved heads for some more compression and flow?

      Definitely low to midrange. My research made me decide to go with the Hammer 570 cam too when the time comes.

    One thing to remember, If your going to do any kind of Performance Up-Grade that give your H-D Sportster 883 or 1200 enough Power Gain to where your engine RPM can Rev over 6000 RPM, you'll need to Up Grade the Value Springs for those Higher Revving RPM. Other wises you'll float the Stock Valve Springs, which will and can damage if not destroy the Engine.
    I have a 1989 H-D Sportster that was a 883, which the last owner converted to a 1200. After I got the bike, I striped, the Fuel Tank, Fenders, Seat, Exhaust Pipes, and the ignition. I replaced all of those parts with the SXS Kit from Phil Little ( the kits give the Sporty that Flat-Track Racer look) My future plan are to install the Hammer 1275 100 HP kit. In-which should be All the Power (and More) than I'll ever need.
    P.S. I would up-load a photo but You Tube doesn't give us that option, that I know of anyway.

    The big bore XLs (1200) can make good 1/8 to 1/4 mile drag bikes. Good 0 to 60 times to for a pushrod motor. My first Harley was an 04' 1200 Sportster and just with a pair of Bassani pipes, and a Screamin Eagle High Flow Air Cleaner and a Dynojet jet kit it dynoed over 71 hp, and around it was either 77 or 79 ft. pounds of torque. That was with all stock internals. My dad used to work at the local Harley shop, and they did a 1200 carbed Sporty with JE pistons, Zippers cam, and for the exhaust had a Thunderheader got close to 100 hp, and lifted off the front of the ground when got on it in second gear. These bikes put out more hp per cubic inch than the twin cam 88! Riding like I did I noticed that the Sportys sometimes get looked down on by some Big Twin owners, and they arent as comfortable out on the InterState either.

    I have a 97 1200 Sportster. I put N4 cams pistons and SE heads on it. Mikuni HRS42 carb Daugherty air box. Rinehart exhaust SE ignition module SE coil S&S roller rocker arms. I weigh about 260 it would scare a small person. I just got a very low mile 07 low rider that's stock except mufflers. It had 3600 miles on it when I got it. I might take up your advice and increase the cubic inches and put a set of cams in it. What a difference in ride from the sporty. When i bought my Sportster I had to pay $100 get on a waiting list to get the first available bike that came in. I wasn't guaranteed the color either. I had to wait 9 months for my bike. The only bikes that were in the dealership were sold ones. No used ones either. For a big twin the wait was longer. This was in 1996. I was 25 years old riding my new Harley Davidson. King lol. I really like your videos buddy. Shinny side up.

    If you don't do the math, you are just a follower. I just ran 7.05 on the Sturgis eighth mile last Fri night on Metzeler Karoo adventure touring tires on a 1200 conversion. The local fast guy runs 6.9 on a Busa. I could smoke him with a 591 on the rear. Pump gas, all very mild stuff.
    There is no practical value to cams in an 883 as the cams are not the restriction. The small ports and valve sizes are the culprit.

Man I agree 100% about the n4’s, they are so solid on my bike once they kit in they pull hard rite to the red line ! Now I don’t spin my bike up to 7000-7200 rpms like some of the guys with bigger builds do , but I can tell you that the cams pull nice for me rite to the 6300rpm range about . It’s great because the power is all in great spot , they seem to fit well with my riding style .

    stiffer valve springs, and lighter valve gear, actually does make top end power, ( hang with me here ), the further the valve-train is from floating, the more energy is returned to the engine...
    think of riding fast over a hill; and feeling lighter , past the crest, on the way down ... power is lost to valve train inertia that way, so stiffer springs, or lighter valve-train components, make more top end power by returning it more.. ( that's right, those quickie push rods might be convenient, but they are a performance downgrade )
    i am doing an 883 that currently has the old D cam, ( and on a budget ),
    so i am thinking Andrews N2, up the compression a smidgen, port and polish, 2 into1 tuner, high flow intake, jet for 14.7-15 AFR on a gauge.
    " 14.7 -15 AFR " what are you nuts dude ? " Right ? .... no seriously, *liquids do not compress* and i will Not need to increase my compression ratio with wasted fuel,
    and i Do Not plan on revving my engine to the point that the exhaust valves are opening before the charge has finished burning..( i can use up to 6K3rpm, on a 3.811" stroke )
    *It's An MPG Hot Rod, so chill* ; it's not a girls bike for as long as there are still girls who are heavier than me.

    I heard the guys at DK Customs saying something about Sportsters not getting up past 5200 R.P.M.s, unless you're riding really fast, I think. I probably wouldn't want to mess with cams, unless I converted to a 1200 or 1275 kit, because I don't want to be buying cams more than once. I don't even know, if I would get a 1275 kit, unless I could get lower compression pistons, because I've been told that, if I use my bike as a daily rider, it's not good to have a high compression motor. I'd love to get the kit, if that's possible. I'm happy with both of my 883s, though, so I don't know what I'm missing. It would just be nice, for longer trips, to push through the wind, a little easier.

      Check out my videos, I have the Feuling reaper 505/515 cams and am doing a 1250cc kit when the season is over here in Canada (November). Feuling claims 94hp at 6500rpm with an exhaust, intake and tuner on a 1200cc which is AMAZING, and I was skeptical at first but after I got it properly tuned I can believe it! These cams work AMAZING and the sound they create is top notch. They also offer a larger Sportster cams (reaper 580) which requires valve springs, and lifters. I have feuling valve springs and lifters to install with my 1250, but aince the bike is so new I was able to leave the stock lifters for now and they don't have to be upgraded with the cams, it is just a recomendation. The Feuling 505/515 cams really brought the bike to life and I am incredibly happy with them. That being said, you can not go wrong with the Hammer Performance 1275+ supporting components like cams and whatnot! I think you will be happy either way! As for the Hammer 560, gaining a few hp after 5500rpm is basically useless. Most people are shifting between 5500-6500 so unless you ride the bike wide open above 5500rpm all the time there wouldn't be much to notice.

    and, honestly, if i would have had a W cam, i would not have felt the need to swap in aftermarket cams . i had the old D-cams, and single fire ignition; so it cost me $800 to swap into my N2s

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great point about the the single fire ignitions! The W cams are hard to beat since most Sportster cams take from the bottom and give to the top.
      The only Sportster cams l have found that can beat a W cam all around power and give nothing up is the Hammer 570 cams.

      @RulgertGhostalker ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GixxerFoo so you can imagine a single fire ignition given a higher overlap cam ..... i did ahead of time, i am sure the rear cylinder would back-fired to no end.
      i got the Twin Tech ignition, and my N2s put peak torque up around 4K2 with my custom welded pipes...different pipes make any cam different.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have a good cam like the Hammer 560 on a late model injected bike with the good heads and a really good exhaust it is possible. Adding 10.5:1 compression will further solidify that. But if you have a 03 or earlier the stock heads are awful for performance, you'll need some head work there.

      Hammer Performance 1275 Kit and a set of their 560 or 570 cams with a good solid two into one exhaust with a solid dyno tune and that will make it happen.

    There is no camshaft upgrade for a stock 883. Stage II on an 883 is a bore increase.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can add cams to the 883 but it's really not worth it unless you're doing some kind of spec class racing. They will make some power but you're very limited by displacement.
