    You were spot on when you told people not to use alcohol on a wound. Sure, the alcohol will kill germs but it also kills animal cells. The only use for alcohol is disinfect instruments or intact skin.

    Great info, Scott. I’ve been pretty fortunate and haven’t experienced most of these issues. I can, however, speak about good experiences with Benebac. A couple of times now, I’ve found soft or weird looking poop coming from one pig. I was able to figure out which pig it was and then give her a few doses of Benebac. I’m not sure what was wrong but her poop stabilized pretty quickly.

    I had a piggy break his front paw in an altercation with his brother. I called our vet and we concluded that the only treatment possible was painkiller. I had Metacam on hand from another pig’s serious bite wound, so we didn’t have to go in.
    You can also treat lost front teeth at home by hand feeding and julienning the veggies! The teeth grow back really fast,

I had a strange poo smell during lap time with our piggie last night and I knew where to go for help - thanks to your great advice, I ordered benebac and will give that as well as cut down on the greens a tad. Thank you so much! My guinea started showing some symptoms of being sick a few days ago and I don't have enough money for a vet so I had been looking around the web searching his symptoms for help. I thought my guinea pig was going to have to die because I couldn't find anything besides people saying go to the vet. I watched this video and thought, "man, no luck here either". The next day my guinea lost mobility in his legs and I was so bizarrely happy because then I knew it was scurvy. The vitamin C you recommended came in today and I just gave the first dosage for my guinea pig! I'm SUPER EXCITED to see him get better.

    I rescued my pig from a dumpster. He was left in his cage in the hot July sun but his owner, screaming for water. I've loved him for 4 years since, but now he needs help.
    It started with his hind legs being paralyzed, he was dragging them. Now his front legs are barely working. He doesn't eat much, the side of his body he lays on is being matted in poo and the hair all knotted up.
    The bones are almost flattening there too from him favoring that side to lay on.
    I just started giving him vitamin D supplements crushed inside of mandarin oranges (not the best delivery method, I know) and am just hoping that some functionality may return to bring him a bit more comfort.
    His name is Ziggy and he really needs a miracle.

    Every time I rescued a piggy with head tilt, my vet found ear infection. Maybe because it’s cold here and warm in California, it’s different for you. But it’s very cold here and infection is common.
    If you are Saskia or Scotty, they know what mites are compared to fleas or lice. But most folks won’t. (Like me!!) Your vet will know. Better to be safe. If you can get to Saskia, sure go to her first.
    I am fortunate to have four good exotics vets here. If you aren’t close to any, of course try home remedies first. Scotty has excellent information and of course Saskia and skinnypigs1 have helpful videos.

    • @ValeriesZoo
      @ValeriesZoo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve also had head tilt in piggies that wasn’t blindness, I think it’s a good idea to get any head tilt checked out by vet. I had one piggy with an ear infection, cleared up and tilt went away after antibiotics and had 1 piggiy with head tilt caused by neurological issues.

    • @skinnypigs1
      @skinnypigs1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ValeriesZoo I agree. When a head tilt all of a sudden appears, that is serious. Barnaby had the ear infection and within a day he went from just a minor tilt to very bad. He was seen the next day and forever kept a bit of a tilt. So people shouldn't wait or assume what it is. He need a month of antibiotics.

    So. My guinea pig Finn can't walk. On Thursday night I was picking him up and then I put him down for a second and I saw his front paw slightly go in. And then I picked him up again and he squealed very loudly. And then he wobbled over to his hidey when I set him down. He stayed in the same position the whole night and then I picked him up the next morning and he squealed loudly again
    Then I separated him from alex and put everything close to him. He wasn't drinking his water and he stayed in the same spot standing the whole day. Then fast forward to today and him and Alex are being bonded again because they forgot each other. I'm going to put them back together. But he can't walk. When he gets startled he tries to run but instead he falls. He can scooch over a inch or two. I have had to give him water through a syring because he is dehydrated. We called the vet but they did not know what to do. They said going there for a check up is 75 dollars. The only reason we aren't gonna go is because they would probably examine him and say to just give him rest and then they will get 75$ for nothing. Or they will give us medicine that will probably not work. If worst comes to worst we might go. But do you have any advice to improve the way I'm caring for him? Or any medicine I could find somewhere that could help?

    Hey Scotty. Yes. We had a scare when I first got our Max and Peanut. There are now bonded. But when we were trying to get them together , peanut didn’t like max so he bit him right between the eyes. It was a huge chunk. So I cleaned it and kept triple antibiotic meds on it. And it took probably 2 weeks to fully heal. It was a thematic experience. But they are now living happy and healthy. Max still picks on Peanut. But he’s just stays in the igloo. LOL. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You are the best. You also helped me with when I emailed you about play dates with my other piggie that was single. Take care.

      @karaleetrapp 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have also had trouble bonding some of my boys (girls are so much easier to bond, although 1 of my girls decided to torture 1 of her penmates). I had a pen of 3 boys who happily got along until they all hit their teenage stage. Zoomie tore a hole in Zorros' back leg, close to his backend. Both boys are much happier with different penmates, Zorro with Houdini Boy and Zoomie with Roadie. The 3rd boy Squeak is loving life living with 8 girls. Squeak, Zoomie and Zorro were all neutered after that incident. Squeak was seperated at the time due to an illness.

      fly high peanut, rest peacefully. I know that nothing can take away the pain your feeling but please know you’re not alone. My piggie, Squeakers, has lost a lot of weight drastically and we took him to the vet two weeks ago but they didn’t know what was wrong and kept speculating. Later today, we took him to a different vet and we were told he has liver cancer. He’s on meds that will hopefully keep him comfy and help him continue eating but the vet said we only have a few weeks left with him and that when it gets to the point that he no longer seems himself, to go back and get him put down. I’m sure Peanut was beautiful and I hope you are ok

I started feeding them coconut oil and this has seemed to help a bit since it is suppose to be a natural fungal fighter. If you know any other natural remedies for wild animals I would love to hear them. I have 2 guinea pigs and a chinchilla in my home so I try to be mindful of not bringing anything back in the house. When 1 of my gang injures their eye. I use the ointment my vet prescribed and take pigtures and a video(if possible), and send them to my vet and my vet will let me know if I need to take that piggy to the vet. I also have Meloxicam my vet prescribed to help the piggy with any pain they may have from the eye injury. Someone mentioned on 1 of the live feeds that you should design a shirt saying 'Lice, Mites and Internal Parasites'.

    Can you do a video on if Guinea pigs can catch a cold or flu from their owners. I live in pa and the weather change has gave me and my daughter a cold. and we always hold our piggies everyday but I was scared they cold catch our cold and I feel so bad because when we go in the room they are come running to the cage wall and popcorning and when we walk away with out picking them up they look sad.

    I am really scared. Woke up to blood all over the cage today. I grabbed both my piggies (Annie) (Leah) and checked the both for cuts or anything like that. I checked annie first and the looked fine so I checked leah next. I immediately saw the blood was hers and it was coming out of her privates. I'm not sure if she is just on her cycle. I've ready so me at different things online and I'm not sure that to do. Someone help plz!!

    Hi Scott thank you for the amazing job with all of your videos. I’m from Brazil mom of 3 guinea pig I currently live in USA but in Brazil many cities is very hard to find a exotic pet veterinarian and the cost is very high. Some people unfortunately can’t afford and the issues are usually the ones you talking about in the video. I would like to know if you allow me to make a video in Portuguese of everything you mention in your video kind of a translation in my channel to help the Brazilians owners so they don’t need to leave their pigs suffering at home. Hope to hear from you ❤️

    I've been babysitting my granddaughters(Lexi)guinea pig ("lil" bit)&its been months now as they were in the process of moving&I spoiled him so much that when Lexi comes over she is in awe of all I've done&do for him I cant help it I've fallen head over heels in love with him he has me wrapped around his little paw..(every morning@3a.m. he wakes me for a snack lettuce&carrot)now the sad part&I believe the real reason Lexi wanted me to take him is because his friend died our hearts broke but whats worse is now if he(lil bit) doesn't move or make a noise cause hes asleep or something tears roll down her cheeks she wont say a word&she runs away&hides shes not sure but shes terrified he might be gone(she found big papa) I know in time she will health&want to mama another baby as she is exactly like her Grandma(me..Laice pronounced Lacey)we both love to take care of and mama babies of all kinds we love to love... your heart beats like our hearts beat since childhood every stray I brought home to feed&love&if no one wanted or claimed them then I would I always wanted what others didn't... I see beauty that most cant or wont... You see it too...God Bless you&I believe we would be best of friends if given the chance... Just a thought ... If we are ever in the same state we should say Hi or meet ... I watch all your videos now that I have a piggie to love is how I found you...I need to get lil bit a new buddy I will have to find a baby boy in a guinea pig rescue here in Spokane I know of a ferret rescue maybe they can direct me to a guinea pig rescue..."Never Change" you make a huge difference ... Love radiates off you ...I can honestly say your amazing ... Please know Im not someone that's off thier medication ... Im not mentally challenged or deranged in anyway ... in fact I've never commented before& have never wanted too ... but for some reason I just did... Im way out of my comfort zone...Peace...or maybe Good bye its really up to you...

    I need to find the healing process photos for ringworm. How long does it take for the fur to grow back where the ringworm was located by the nose area? I'll look through your videos! Thanks!

    • @ScottysAnimals
      @ScottysAnimals  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I wouldn't necessarily worry too much about how long it takes to grow back I would just follow the steps and have faith. Remember there is a crust usually and the entire layer of skin has been damaged, it probably takes a month for the hair to grow back, maybe longer. And if they've been scratching in that area and causing scabs and cuts there could be some scarring

    Hey scotty. Question. I have two piggies. One is an adult .one is a pup. They seem to get along okay. Although the pup (s'more) can be stubborn and the adult ( bear) can bully a lil bit. Mostly just chasing him around. No biting that I've noticed or fighting. Within the last week I've noticed several bald scaly patches pop up on s'more that bear doesn't seem to exhibit. So my question being does s'more perhaps have ringworm (maybe mites) -but wouldn't bear catch it to possibly- or is he possibly barbering him and I'm not noticing?

    Head tilt can be very serious, it can mean an ear infection which can kill Guinea Pigs and a head tilt could also mean they have previously had an ear infection but always keep an eye out for a head tilt or or other abnormalities

    I found one abandoned in a bird cage by some rural mailboxes.
    I think the owner abandoned it because is sick.
    I took it home and wash it but I noticed that can't stand up on it hind legs and had some diarrhea.

    Thanks for the video, Scott ☺️
    I watched when it first came out, and rewatched a few weeks ago because my 3 piggies have been scratching LIKE CRAZY! They’re skinnies, so no loss of hair to make it obvious it’s mites...
    But one of them has a tinyyyy spot on her nose with hair loss,and all of the have scratches no matter how much I trim and file their nails..
    I gave them the ivermectin (the paste), today I gave them the 3rd dose.. and still the scratching doesn’t stop 😔 Do I need to wait more for the result? Or should I just make an appointment with their vet?
    Does anyone have experience with this that could help us out? 😢

    Hi! I am a veterinary assistant at my local vets and yesterday I re homed a 3 week old baby boy Abyssinian g pig who I’ve named Stevie because he was born without eyes. He was due to be put to sleep if nobody wanted him because the other babies bullied him and wouldn’t let him eat or drink and the owner didn’t want him so i re homed him. He’s fine medical wise he just was born without eyes. I was just wondering as I’ve been following you for a while if you have any suggestions on how to get him used to drinking as he struggles to find the water at the moment. He eats fine though. Just thought I’d ask you:) thanks x

    what if a guinea pig tries to lick or nip at a wound? like try to lick a wound with the ointment on it. Is that really bad? Or you can stop it.
