Absolutely smokeless on startup so cool....As you said earlier someone took care of this before it ended up in the storage yard. The tires even don't look too bad. .The shaft does sound loose but the gear oil might be thick from sitting around. Take Care Jeff
I am amazed at how well it runs... that means it will blow up in spectacular ball of fire as soon as I get it installed...lol. The tires have a LOT of meat on them, but they are branded 2000 as YOM, so I would never run them on the street.

It sound like an exhaust valve sticking or not seating real good it may need more running to clear it up. It sound great other wise after siting so long. Glad it had spark sometime that can be a hard find when there is none.
Thanks Scott... Good ear! I had the same thought about the exhaust valve.. that tell-tale putt putt throgh the exhaust is what made me think... I still need to do a compression check and check the valves.. but you know I will video what I find. I'm glad it had spark too... there is a LOT of wiring/relays to make this project a pain in the neck.
Does that oil have anything in it for the wet clutch .Like motorcycle oil has. If just going slow through town ,and i leave in a higher gear I get the drive shaft slap on mine too. They like their valves adjusted ,and make sure the exhaust is not sticking a bit. Nice tire

Those early Virago all had starter issues, I had two 85 model 700 and they both sounded like yours.....lol....I bought a shim kit for my bobber and it didn't help much. Some people say to update to a newer model case and starter that is the only fix for them.....keep us posted on your progress,,,,
The clunking sound is normal and comes from the clutch assembly...when the driveline is under load you wont hear anything. With that low mileage there cant be anything wrong with those parts. Just change the oil in the final drive ( SAE 80 or 90 ) and you are good to go. Did you check the spark plugs? Maybe your carbs are not adjusted right...sounds like it. THanks for your help/information... At the time of this video, I had not pulled any of the plugs or done any final adjustments on the carbs since the dissassembly/cleaning.
Nah, the flywheel is good. I removed the starter and spun the engine to check. Apparently the starters were a known weak point of this vintage and the bendix spring doesn't kick the start gear out with enough force and it doesn't fully engage (or engage at all).
In case anyone doubt it's really a virago, just hear the starter :D

I used motorcycle oil that the Yamaha dealer recommended. I definately need to check the valves on this engine... putt putt putt putt. lol.

There is a sight glass on the left side of the case with high and lo markings. Check with the Engine cool and the bike upright.
