  • Bunjie the Third, the newest addition to the Death by Bunjie Family of Crossbows, suffers its first (and hopefully only) dry fire.
This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt exclusively with the crossbow. I love it and I aim to help you love it, too!

Bunjie (The O.B.) is a 2010 Excalibur Axiom Crossbow. After more than a decade of killing deer, hogs, squirrels, woodchucks, and even a bear, Bunjie is now semi-retired. Enter Bunjie III (or Bunjie '21, Bunjie 3.0, The Slick Black Cadillac of Crossbows) a 2021 Scorpyd Deathstalker 420, the result of trying various models and looking at dozens of them online for characteristics I liked. It is, in fact, a gift from a Friend of Bunjie, which goes to show how important Friends of Bunjie are to this channel and what an impact they can have. Bunjie III is a testament to modern crossbows, producing over .7 slugs of momentum and almost 140 ft-lbs of kinetic energy with stock arrows--at nearly 400 fps!
Bunjie, Jr., is my daughter Genevieve's crossbow, an Excalibur Micro Suppressor 355. This crossbow was also a much appreciated gift from a Friend of Bunjie, and it changed Death by Bunjie forever by inspiring Genevieve to become a part of our story as a second-generation crossbow hunter, and it also convinced me there is a benefit to a newer, faster crossbow (see our 2020 Maryland Doe Hunt).
Again, I am not sponsored by these companies. I am sponsored by Friends of Bunjie! (I'm not asking for gifts whatsoever--please don't feel like you should send me stuff! But I do appreciate the support I've received over the years! I'm just trying to express my appreciation for that.)
This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...and music, too! My related channel, Yankee Militia, showcases my music. Some of the music is hunting-related, so check that out, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, so the two are intertwined. The albums "Live Free or Kill" and "Zombies Gotta Eat, Too!" are available on Amazon.com and elsewhere. A third album is in the works.
    All Hail Bunjie!

Over the course of about 7 years I dry fired my Excalibur Matrix 355 about 3 times. I called Excalibur and they said it would be fine. I've been using it dry fire free for the last 5 years and it shoots great. I was lucky.

A similar thing happened to my best friend. After the incident, we drove over an hour to a well respected sporting goods store to restring his crossbow. The tech there related numerous similar stories that all had one thing in common, decocking arrows. Instead of replacing the one that was destroyed in the incident, he advised buying a small decocking TARGET. You use your same arrows, albeit with a field point, so same vanes and nocks.

I concur with Jim McCourt and I too love your honesty and humility. I did my first dumb stunt last summer when I shot mine with the draw cord still attached. It left quite an impression on me - literately. My thumbnail is still somewhat black today. I'm lucky it wasn't a dryfire, just launched the cord across my wrist and the cord handle into my thumbs. Well when the TH-cam channel master crossbow master makes this kind of mistake and suffers a "dry fire" disaster, It kind of makes me fell a little better because I've had a record number of crossbow accidents, misfires, dry fires, and arrow string jumps that I'm so frustrated with crossbows in general! This is why I simply will not spend lots of money on what is a "STRING" Instrument, and it doesn't play music either! Well, had this been an excalibur, we would first have to hope that the limbs survived the high draw weight. And then, I would have had to have gotten out the crank and a special device to change the string. Here I just needed a dowel rod. Believe it or not, I've done both, and I got to tell you this one's actually easier and faster to change the string on LOL. I'd even go so far as to say that it's easier to change the string on this scorpyd than it is on the wide limb excalibers! With that I need to pull back all the draw weight, but here I can do it with one hand. I never really thought about that before, but that would make a good video topic.

You need to seek help for that iced coffee addiction... All that crossbow energy has to go somewhere. My crossbow dry fired on a fractured nock. It sheared a steel screw off on the scope mount base I guess from scope whiplash. Did not affect the prod, string, or anything else. I gun hunt as well, but favor arrows over bullets and have gone entire seasons without picking up a deer rifle. Our crossbow deer season ends 16 Jan. Can still shoot furbearers up into February. I shifted from my deer arrow at 520 grains and now shooting 460 grains with monolithic Ozcut Chinese nockoff that costs maybe two bucks. Very tough head. Totally capable of taking a deer, but shifting to varmints, especially fawn and egg eaters.

The latest and greatest with pulleys and wires and of course the Hindu bit willers, only means that more things can go wrong. But, your video content and presentation is very good and you continually prove the KISS theory. Your hunting methods look solid. Maybe it’s ok to tailor your hunting to the original bunjie’s limits. These things are unfortunate but as long as no one is hurt the best case scenario learning experience. I dry fired an Excalibur Exomax once because I forgot to put an arrow in and it damaged the bows limbs and bent the limb silencer brackets. This bow stored a lot of energy though. I don’t trust stock strings after my barenett failing as well shortly after buying it durning the hunting season. You can call them I’m sure they would Anwser anything really nice people but I remember their website saying about the speed I have had their strings on all my bows crossbow and compound never had a issue. Are you using a full capture nock? The Firenock “U” nock is specified for the Scorpyd death stalker models. The “Q” nock on the other Scorpyd models
There is an audible “click” when the Firenock nock snaps onto the string
Anything aside from that you have the potential for a “partial dry fire”
This is a different system that your older traditional crossbow.
Also make sure that the cams did not get warped.
Unfortunately you’re learning the hard way

    • @Deathbybunjie
      @Deathbybunjie  ปีที่แล้ว

I don't care for the Firenock nocks. I use the Parker style Lumenoks. For years, the Scorpyd website has said they're OK, although now they recommend only the Firenocks. They don't snap on but there's plenty of contact and accuracy has been perfect. This is just user error but likely not a mistake I'll repeat LOL. It's shooting 💯 now though, all good.

I have several Scorpyd models My first was a Ventilator 175 and it came with moon nocks (crescent nocks). Earlier, and I had a partial dry fire with the same results. I’ve gone to the Firenock system. It’s a little more work setting them up if you want to use the lighted nocks. I see that you like to hunt from ground blinds and so do I. The only disadvantage to that is after the arrow goes through the deer, intends to skim into the ground. That’s where the lighted nock shines as it gets dark. There’s a good chance of recovering the arrow. Also, a metal detector comes in handy for that.
Ever since I went to the Firenock system, I have not had any partial Dry fires. The sound of that nock clicking on the string is reassuring. I have heard of guys having partial dry fires with the Parker nocks. If you lower the front of the crossbow at any point, there’s always a chance it could slip off.
The Firenock system requires a little more work setting up the arrows

Then I get on the field and I miss🤢 last time I missed well two times prior had a buddy crossbow and no idea if it was zero correct or even on point but my Ravin is and last week I had a boar move in on me at first light. My range finder wasn't picking it up and I had to guess well I was wrong. Since then needless to say I've put the oracle x in my save for later box on Amazon lol. It's just a big purchase considering my bow was 1250. Admit I was a little intimidated on how to set the thing up SR one SR two anyways anyways I'm rambling. I'm gonna stick with the crossbow. I'm looking forward to the next season. I struck out the season but I'm determined thank you for your content.
