so wild that 10 years ago, seeing blurry screenshots and low res clips of beta content was the best glimpse of OoT's beta and now we have way more insight into what happened.
8:53 - "LOD Test" means Level of Detail, which is exactly what's being shown - the triangle that turns into a cube is using a low-detail and high-detail model based on distance. It's just set to transition way closer than most things would be, so the dev can see it happen.
The Material Room's original purpose was probably to test the appearance of various graphical materials. Many game engines and graphics suites test them on spheres by default. They probably changed the material applied to the sphere and the pane every now and then to see how it looks in-game, but without a way to change it directly in runtime. So they could make a version with the metal of Link's sword applied to the sphere, another with the bark of the Deku Tree, and so on. Similarly, the pane could be glass, water, etc.
Fun fact: During the development of Ocarina of Time, there was an infamous bug that would cause beta testers to be sucked into the game. Their souls still reside within the game to this day.
And when they made Majoras Mask some of these souls have been transformed together with assets over to Majoras Mask. One of those souls was called Bob i think... No Ben, it was Ben.
it's so crazy that after nearly 25 years, this game isn't drained of ideas and content. OOT and its beta is imo the best and most interesting dev cycle of all time.
@@user-qv5sm5dw1v exactly why i followed this game's development religiously since 2006. the start of the cycle to the finished end product are so fundamentally different it's so uncanny. most video game betas are relatively similar to the final version, and the only other cycle as crazy as this is resident evil 4 where one of the versions eventually became devil may cry.
It was found out that the development team actually started backwards and worked their way to the beginning from the end. Basically, they first started development in ganons castle and ended around kokiri forest. As they where working down, they tested elements that would and wouldnt work with what they already made. If it broke something or didnt fit and work, it got scrapped or had to rework the entire map and elements. Its a VERY touch and go development method, thus explains alot of cut content. It might be the ONLY time they ever done this style since they stopped doing it once they started majoras mask. Its VERY time consuming and majoras mask couldnt afford that style. also, the forest temple maybe the first dungeon created, if your not counting ganons castle.
That may explain why Miyamoto said Ocarina of Time started with a similar structure to Mario 64, with the game having a central hub that the player continuously returns to and they can choose what area they want to play next. Funnily enough, it seems Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom reincorporated that idea, with Tears of the Kingdom having Lookout Landing being a pseudo central hub of sorts.
please make videos about the SNES/SFC prototypes and assets found in the July 2020 leaks. i love these videos and seeing all this coverage and hearing your speculations on the cut content is very fascinating to me
Nah it wasn't. I've datamined this from head to toe the geometry isnt the same and the MM final battle is at least twice or 3x as big. There would have been no need to transfer it knowing this room structure would take 30 seconds to make even back in 97. Oldowas room is the same
@@dogboi76 I think he means more it was an influence for MM, rather than the exact same map being used cause even without measuring the geometry it's pretty clear
@@TheObsessiveGamer He said it looks like a test they reused and I was saying it wasn't. I wouldn't even say influence has anything to do with it, It just straight up has no relation
Don't think anything to do with sound effects as I didn't find anything related to it there. Seemingly is all visual. Sasatests seem to be mainly for SFX
8:42 I never paid attention to his pants before but now that I'm seeing them a lot more... how would Hylians make this multicolored design? Would that even be possible in medieval times?
I wonder how many beta maps are actually test maps. Like, was the first trailer with the dungeon where Link found the triforce a test map for trailer purposes, or was it actually a dungeon meant to be used but they never found a use for it after the trailer?
Hey Obsessive gamer man, did you know that using the Spirit medal allows you to become Navi and it makes it so fun to fly around old maps and stuff. I doubt that it was an intended feature but its still fun to play around with.
Has anyone been able to figure out how the beta water temple would have worked? Like made a playable version of that level, since it is visually so different from the final game?
@TheObsessiveGamer how would that have even worked? I think that while other beta maps were simply less refined or looked more like rough drafts, the beta water temple seemed to have a different architectural style and theme. Like the devil changed their mind about the overall concept. That's why I wish it was talked about more. The beta deku tree was very different but the textures looked pretty much the same, it was changed for difficulty and story reasons but not really for theming.

Yeah that's what I figured it stood for, but didn't want to make speculation on that. Thanks for clarifying!
LoD is Lord of Destruction

Can’t get enough of cut Ocarina of Time content!
Same, I've read through the whole tcrf articles multiple times
Same! Whenever I can, I try to make a video on it.

If this was true, I'd try to find a way to curse them with amogus pattern recognition

At least OOT carried and evolved said assets. Some games just scrap even the good ideas when they start over.
Game development is so different today. I just wish I could go back in time and see them working on this with my own eyes

This all indeed being the case. I covered alot of your points here actually throughout a few videos as well if you are interested to check those out.

A watertemple that was even longer.
Ok, now it's official who ever made the og watertemple was definitely a sadist

Room 116 looks like a test they decided to re use for Majora's mask
Oh maybe. Considering several assets from the beta were reused, I can see that happening

It makes sense considering the development time of Majora's mask

I cant believe i missed new Zelda content! Well it didn't disappoint, cool stuff as always :D
Is the Material room perhaps to test sound effects of different material objects, as well as visually?

The guy clearly just have it stitched together from several different pants probably lol

I wouldn't be surprised since it did have the Stalfo rooms there too in that same trailer I think.
thanks for this vid, amazing work dude
Thank you!

Awesome, I'll check them out when I get off my work and into my TH-cam binge. I didn't realize it was so easy to play this yourself though
So glad I woke up today cause now I can watch this!!!
Hope you enjoy it! :)
Love this like always 😊
Thank you!
Yo, I can't wait to watch this video!
Hope you enjoy it!
What a pity that link hat does not have physics in the final version
Yeah honestly. Playing a recreation mod here of that was amazing to see it happen. I'm guessing it just made the N64 more taxed that way.
Just imagining being able to access the treasure chest test room right at the beginning of the actual game. 😂😂😂
This must be the back rooms of Hyrule.

Has anyone been able to figure out how the beta water temple would have worked? Like made a playable version of that level, since it is visually so different from the final game?
I don't think anyone has made a functional one yet, but what we do know is. that the boss area in the final game was originally its entrance actually.
@TheObsessiveGamer how would that have even worked?
I think that while other beta maps were simply less refined or looked more like rough drafts, the beta water temple seemed to have a different architectural style and theme. Like the devil changed their mind about the overall concept. That's why I wish it was talked about more.

Shit. I said I'd be here when it dropped. I'm late.
heh whoops. Well at least you can now watch it in 4K since that isn't possible while live
