Amen. And don't forget the Battle of Lepanto. Tired of people today trashing the Crusades and Crusaders. They fought for what they believed in and most of them sold property and exhausted what they had to fight for Christendom. It's very fashionable to dis them today but most people I hear doing this have no idea of the history of the Crusades. God Bless those who fought for what they believed in.
You also have to consider that the crusaders fought a defensive war in that they after 750 years of Muslim attacks on Christian countries tried to reconquer one former Christian country.
I think you may have missed the point of the line. You'll notice it was spoken by The Fool. I think the implication is that the fool has an overly romanticized view of the crusades. The message of the song, I think, is that war has always been evil, for the same reasons as today. The choruses, "I am the king" vs "God is our king," reflect two different worldviews - one of self-worship, on the part of Saladin, and one of religious fanaticism, on the part of the crusaders. Obviously these are not historically-accurate portrayals of the figures involved, but fictionalized to make a point as a sort of a parable. The song of the crusader is still with us, the song is saying - but it was always one of greed and evil. Alternatively, one could argue that the claim of greed and evil is false, and that a noble song of the crusader is still with us. In either case, don't listen to the Fool - he's wrong.
It depends on whether you see the fool as a fool or a jester. Often, the fool is employed as a proto-stage to a wise man or wisdom as such. Or a sharer of unexpected insight. Moreover, don't ignore the juxtaposition of wise man - fool. The stanza further explicitly contrasts the wise man's search for truth in the past, whilst the fool pragmatically looks at the present. And remarks that the wise man's desire and life's work to reproduce what got enemies together nowadays is impossible due to a lack of purity, taken over by greed and evil. I personally don't see a trace of your reading if you respect the archetypal uses of wise man and fool. I guess we can agree it's an intriguing lyrical presentation and a lot of food for thought:)
@@TheOneAndOnlyMrTino This is true! However, I would argue that first, there was never purity (supported by preceding verses, in which the crusaders are presented as violent religious fanatics), and second, a lack of purity does not imply a lack of goodness. Due to the apparent naivete of the fool in this stanza, I would argue that he is not a jester, but is in fact a fool. The wise man is a hopeful figure, imagining that, and I quote, "could it be that way again?" Depending on your interpretation of the preceding verses, he might be considered naive in his belief in the nobility of the crusaders, or just idealistic. Either way, he is looking for solutions and hope, while the fool just dismisses the past and its ideals as dead, while the present is hopeless - a very nihilistic, and in my opinion, foolish position to take. Yes, there are greedy and evil men fighting today, but so were there in the past, and while Jerusalem may be lost, the song of the Crusader need not be, for there are also still good men fighting today, sometimes on the same side as the evil ones. TL;DR: You made an important point about the symbolism of the fool. However, looking at the larger context of the song, I suspect your interpretation may be mistaken.

@@tchitcho5169 Saladin is not considered as one of the 10 greats general of all times by military historians. One of the reasons is that Saladin was was quite good at running away. For example after the battle of Montgisard were Saladin's army was destroyed by Balduin IV of Jerusalem or after the battle of Arsuf, where Saladin's army was destroyed by the crusader army under Richard I Lionheart of England. Funny how the followers of Ishmael and Isaac have been fighting over 2 centuries and have not found the way of peace. One professes to follow a Saviour who was forgiveness, love and peace , yet lusts for the battlefield even with citizens of their own country. Wonder what Abraham would say today. Love Chris de Burgh and musically this one is great. I understand his aim to meld Protestants and Catholics with this. but he does injustice to Salidan, who from all accounts was an extremely honorable man. No plundering and gave quarter to all who capitulated. Not so much for the crusaders.

Love Chris de Burgh and musically this one is great. I understand his aim to meld Protestants and Catholics with this. but he does injustice to Salidan, who from all accounts was an extremely honorable man. No plundering and gave quarter to all who capitulated. Not so much for the crusaders.
I love chris de burgh too hes a very kindhearted and loving and caring man who goes out of his way to make his fans feel like they matter to him especially disabled people and he is very funny and very cheeky too and he loves making people feel good too and i love him like mad
thx for this music Chris de Burgh!!!
I'm 16 and I listen him since 10 years. My dad show mi that and... Gosh That is soo good :D
Wonderful song. So close to the truth
Lu Gui nope not even 10%
I absolutely love this song!!!
Saladin was acctually an example to many chritian knights, a great knight and a great leader
Yeah, while I've always loved this song, the depiction of Saladin always felt very off.
Saladin was a heathen bastard
Really? Not just a dirty muslim!!!??
This song was banned in my country for years, thanks LORD now i can listen to it freely.
What country
So what do you think of it? Do you agree with whoever banned it? Do you see value in the song?
Vassilis Papakonstantinou- "gia mena tragoudw"
I remembered seeing him in concert in San Antonio, Texas in 1978 or 79! He was the opening act for Peter Frampton! He said that he hoped one day that he would become the main act! I feel he never accomplished his goal but did have some success! The Crusader and the Devils eye were my favorite songs of his!
Chris certainly did reach his goal! I have been to the Rock am Ring festival in 1985 where he was listed as headliner before U2 and Joe Cocker with an audience of 70.000 people. And he was absolutely amazing.
Good job with this video for such an excellent song! It really deserves that cinematic treatment.
Amazing video...many thanks. GOD bless!
King of kings. Enough said..
Wherever you believe, its your own way!We are all God`s Children and we are Survive!
And it continues to this day.
Chris de Burgh the only musician can relate historical stories singing.
Only the most greatest one. Love his stories.
Long Live Christ the King!
I heard this song many many years ago. I am so glad you posted this . Thanx WinsfordMM ( This is a Very Moving song)
When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him. Isa 59:19 Stand up and fight people, it's now or never
Fight especially against false prophets, ravening wolves in sheep’s clothing, telling you what you want to hear while stripping you of your humanity on behalf of Satan.
de la bonne vieille musique comme on en fait plus. quel talent!
this really is an excellent tribute to this powerful song that brings us back to what we do because we think we are right to to do so...
The story from a millennium ago that has been told ever since, and will be told for evermore.
Next time we fight - its side by side
best regards from Vienna
We remember the Bravery of Sobieski and the Winged Hussars - Next time we fight - its side by side, brother together with brother.
I second that and its coming nearer than we think
Tomorrow is the feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary. It was made mandatory for all Catholics by Pope Innocent XI in honor of King John Sobieski's victory in Vienna.
Dignare me laudare te, Virgo sacrata: da mihi virtutem contra hostes tuos.
God bless you bros.
@Gstyle you filthy abdool. If Europe gone crazy now (leftist stupidity) it doesn't mean it'll be like now forever. Btw have you bowed down to your black stone idol today yet?
@Gstyle how is it trying to get into Greece?
This song is just great!
Peace

This is a song. Not a weapon. It was recorded before ISIS. We need to understand that Religion is the cause not the solution.
Tell our invaders that because I don’t think they would agree with you
Neilsmith6092
I totally agree with you.
Crusader was released in 1979 the year I joined the Army, since then I have come to the conclusion that "that only greed and evil" fill the hearts of the so called religious followers today.
They are right so everyone else is wrong.
This song is fantastic history! I have been living in Jerusalem for 3 years and I completely understand why people have fought and died over such a majestic city. Though I don't appreciate the carnage of Jews, Christians, and Muslims during the Crusades, this song is a wonderful story and the poetry is touching...not corny...
Peace from Syria, beautiful melodies regardless the lyrics! SALAM :)
What's wrong with the lyrics? Why should we disregard them?
@@pinSjon79 This is a hollywood version of the truth, where the bad arab were chased from the holly city, and the good western men, have saved the world once more. I'd like to take a look at chirs's librairy.
@@pinSjon79 villifying muslims. Speaking from a catholic point of view. Needless to say this is the strongest piece of art speaking about such a huge piece of our collective history. The clash. Before amd evetually leading to the world wars.
@@issamcovers8222 Chris has later on published songs with a more reflected view, for example in 'One world' where he says that believing in God 'doesn't mean that my god is greater than yours, it only means we all have the right to believe, 'cause nobody knows it for sure'. I definitely prefer that point of view to the one in the 'Crusader' lyrics. Nevertheless musically 'Crusader' is a masterpiece.
Chris de Burgh did remarkable music in the 1970s! Hardly comparable to what he did later.
Two giants during the crusades were: Godfrey of Bouillon and Richard Lionheart!
Really, only Two ?...For such a
vast time spanning conflict,
one could be excused for be-
living there may'ave more?...
Salahad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub,
springs to mind as another.
He may well not have been a
Crusader, but he certainly was pivotal to this clash of faiths.

Brilliant story teller great song
It was lost and then found again after the fall of ottomans and then gifted to the third party with the title " to whom it may concern".
Heard it the first time, when I was 10. Never forgot it

@@oliverDgiesler what anc said. Phoo
Ian Excalibur anyone, who claims the universe, which is complex beyond measure, somehow, through total happenstance, not only created itself, but it also has order, is a bumbling fool, and should not be listened to. Qualifications be damned. Today’s “experts” are the priests and teachers of the law of yesteryear.
I miss my late mother tears my drop but memories never end😊
In Saladin's defense, no historic source claimed he was a drunk, and even his foes pointed out his magnanimity as a knight in many occasions. Respect to the real artist (chris de burgh).

A fine song
Brilliant even after so many years …..
"What do I do now?" said the wise man to the fool,
"I have spent my whole life searching, to find the Golden Rule,
Though centuries have disappeared, the memory still remains,
Of those enemies together, could it be that way again?"
Then the fool said "Oh you wise men, you really make me laugh,
With your talk of vast persuasion and searching through the past,
There is only greed and evil in the men who fight today,
The song of the Crusader has long since gone away.................................................................
Chris de burgh brings me so much joy
