I already have a GRIII, would it make more sense to go for a A7Cii or another fixed lens like the X100VI and DL8? The palm size of the GRiii is great but the A7Cii is only slightly more than the Fuji and Leica, keen to have something that can potentially dowell in low light/astral photography (but not a major focus for usage)
This is a very difficult question since so much here depends on personal preferences. Since I was never interested in astral photography I am sorry to be not much of a help here. As far as low light is concerned, FX100VI does a great job and THIS was/is a very important, an essential feature for my work.
Another interesting discussion, David. I honestly don’t know how folks can be bothered fighting over or debating the merits of ANY consumer product. Millions of people would give their left plum to have ANY kind of camera, not to mention a smartphone. All of us camera owners are extremely fortunate to have what we have - whether it’s a 5D, a D7200, an XT4, or an M11. Let’s not forget that.
Great chat! You put it perfectly. The DLux 8 is a great compliment to the main camera if you do it for work. Or it can simply be a fun camera to use.. And most importantly, it is a great camera to have everyday with you to enjoy taking photos, and maybe some video.. If that fits the needs and you are able to buy it then do so.. If not there are many other great options at many other price points.
Great video. I am on the market at the moment. Initially had a shortlist of the Ricoh GR IIIx, Fuji X100VI or the Leica D-Lux 8. After watching many videos on each and fighting through some of the clear marketing from some Yuotubers, I decided on the Leica. My primary use case is street photography and having something that fits in my pocket and is easy to grab and shoot when I am out riding my bicycle on trails.
I was looking for a another way to explain to my wife why after purchasing the Fujifilm X-T50 why I also plan to get the D-Lux 8. Maybe this will help!! Great content sir.
I’m curious which files offer better processing in Lightroom for example. With better I mean which files can recover more highlights, shadows, have better colors (although that’s pretty subjective)… which files do you prefer for editing? Thank you for your take
There is no competition since their use areas rarely overlap and even then, different cameras with different sensors are naturally different. I rarely use Leica DL8 for boudoir work but I may also take FFX100VI with me for a photo walk.
It depends. Even though they have a similar price point, these are quite different cameras. the FFX100VI is - technically - a direct competitor to Leica Q2 and still a very strong option compared to Q3. The lens is less protruding and it has a 40MP sensor whereas DL8 is a M4T shooting at 17MP. Originally, I intended the FFX100VI as a travel camera when I did not want to take my Canon R5 with the DL8 for everyday photography. Then I realized that I don't need the R5 and tried the FF for my main work and it delivers which is why I sold the R5. The MP will decide what you choose and/or maybe you will also want to downsize. I am here for more questions if you want to. 😀
@@DAVCOHGRAPH actually I sold off my Q3 because it was too limiting for an everyday camera especially as I didn’t like its true 26mm lens. @@elliotresnick5433 This decision is surprising, to ay the least, in particular since you still use a prime lens. I would always choose the Leica D-Lux8 as an EDC. 😀
@@elliotresnick5433 My Canon R5 and the lenses cost even more and I sold them because too much of everything. In the end, you still use only one lens, so where is the big difference since you could easily crop with Leica's 60mp? Just asking out of curiosity 😀
You are so right, using the right tools for the job. I decided to go the Sony route, a 7r4 for detail work, a 6700 for a light camera, and was looking at a lux8 for a carry camera. Sonys are utilitarian, which suits me, but you have to be comfortable with what you are using and enjoy it, photography should never be a chore. My dream camera is the Leica Q3. But same as alot of people i can’t justify the price. I need to upgrade my Canon 5D Mark IV to a R5 hopefully, and that’s not cheap either. Now i’m really facinated by the Dlux-8 and maybe i can afford both upgrading my work camera and get this without braking the bank. I like the look of the fuji aswell, but it just isn’t leica 😅
@ They are both beautiful, but the Q2 has the better full frame sensor, wich makes it better in my opinion. But i would have to get the Q2 used if i go for it 😊
@@stiigern FF does not really impact your photography and the price difference, purely technically spoken, is both hard to swallow and to justify if you are a pro in the sense of making a living and seeing it as a business investment. Your last video answered one of the questions I had about the menu system comparison, I’m very glad to see another. Although the menu is much less simplistic on the Fuji, despite usually shooting raw I really do like the idea of film simulations. If I’m feeling artsy I can throw one on and do a shoot. Or flip between a few with custom button mapping. Just feels different than doing it all in post. Also anything north of 1000 usd is an investment for me, so the weather sealing and low light capabilities are selling points for Fuji. Right now I lug a DSLR so anything smaller will feel better.
I was very much intrigued by the film simulations since I go back to the analog days. I always said, no Fujifilm and now I got one and I am very happy with it. 😀
The whole discussion about what is better, what makes JPGs prettier, why is Leica so expensive, etc. is, in my opinion, as necessary as a third nostril. There are always - especially on TH-cam - desperate attempts to make comparisons that are absolutely meaningless and come from - and unfortunately I have to say this - completely unqualified people. Today, someone who calls themselves an “influencer” will want to sell you a milkshake, an audio interface or a camera, without having any idea about it. The problem today is that people believe the nonsense that is being spread and continue to share it. Nowadays, every camera manufacturer builds cameras with which you can take sensational photos. Some are cheaper, some are more expensive. Only those who cannot or do not want to afford expensive equipment should not get upset about it and spread nonsense or untruths about it. For example, someone who owns a Fuji and a Leica can talk about the differences, but anyone who doesn't should just keep quiet, or simply listen to those who really can compare.
To get both the Panasonic S9 and the Fuji X100Vi, despite the beauty of the X100Vi, my preference goes to the S9. Even though it lacks a viewfinder and the screen is not just a tilt but rather on a swivel, I use the S9 with the 45mm f/2.8, and the images are stunning. I had the S5M2 and sold it, and God knows how much I criticized the S9 when it first came out, yet today, I can only say good things about it! I was also a Micro Four Thirds user; I had the GX7, GX8, GX9, G9, and the magnificent 42.5mm 1.2 Nocticron. But truly, the S9 with the 45mm f/2.8 is so compact and changes the game, even though I have great gear at home: Z8/Z6III with 50mm f/1.2, 85mm f/1.2, 135mm f/1.8 Plena, S1R with 50mm f/1.4 S Pro, 24-70mm/70-200mm S Pro f/2.8. But as I write these lines, my heart goes to the S9. Maybe the Leica Q3 will win me over (though it’s bigger and heavier), but the price is obviously not the same. I say it's worth trying!
I’m glad you took the gamble and bought the S9 and are very happy with it. I immediately discarded it from my options once I found out what the specs were as much of them were a deal breaker for me. No weather protection, the electronic shutter only, the lack of a viewfinder while not a real problem the lack of a tilt screen when the display is the only way to compose an image on was. Whenever I heard about a new compact full frame camera coming out I immediately thought it would be for me but, as I’ve said above, ended up not. I had been on a list to buy the Leica Q3 which was so long, my camera store was quoting a 18-24 month wait so while waiting, I went out and bought a new laptop… as luck would have it, not long after one came available (probably someone who played preorders at multiple stores cancelled the order) but the money spent on the laptop kill that chance. So I went back to my second option and decided to get on the waiting list for the X100VI and got very lucky as the store had one there ready to buy so that is how I’ve ended up with an X-T5 and an X100VI… I still would love to get the Q3 but I cancelled the preorder as it’s price rose by £250! One will wait and see what the Mk2 version of the S9 will be like… maybe it’ll come with a tilt screen and IBIS and… a mechanical shutter too.
Thanks for the video David! Indeed, although they are in the same category, they can be used very differently. In my case I think I will go with the Fuji - despite the portability of the DLux 8, the Fuji’s 40mp sensor, weather sealing and built-in flash does it for me ✅
