Why I Switched: Fujifilm X100VI & Leica D-Lux 8!
I'm glad you started this YT channel. While I'm not a professional photographer, I have been a very long time enthusiast. I got my first camera, a Canon AE-1, back in 1981 and have not stopped photographing. Since the Canon, I've not owned another SLR but instead progressively sized-down towards rangefinders and P&S as I realised my passion is in street photography and candids. I still frequently browse YT to pick up tips and insights on cameras and photography. But, as you've alluded to, social media including YT have been inundated by influencers rather than real or pro photographers. Unfortunately, the far majority of them are, shall we say, not of a particularly seasoned vintage, and the misguided nonsense they espouse is quite insufferable. It's so reassuring to find your channel and channels like those of Three Blind Men; Peter Evans; etc. Greatly looking forward to your videos. Liked. Subscribed.
Thanks so much for your like, the subscription and your kind words. In fact, all these points actually made me start and I really appreciate your support. 😀🙌🏽
😂 Love you guys. Tell Yasmeena hello. You made her laugh. Me to. Watch out for stiff wind! It’s so true to have your specialty, but always be prepared for a photo opportunity to show up in your day-to-day life. The story of our lives. Landscape and documentary chose me, not the other way around. I much prefer portraits but I do not do as much as I would like to in that area. Thanks as always David.
Thanks so much Robert 😀♥
Your Tools - Your camera is your tool of choice. Lacking modern tools, the Ancient Puebloans, Egyptians, and our ancestors of Mesopotamia used stone 40,000 years ago to record their history in the form of pictographs. Isn't it amazing how we all make our own feeble and passionate attempts to salvage our own mortality. Your friend, JRN
Absolutely 😀🙌🏽
Hi, I stumbled on your first video on Dlux8 and that gave me enough reason to get one. My friend at the time was travelling through Vienna so got it for me (locally it is sold out here in Australia). Having had it for under a week I cannot be happier with this little gem. Comparing to M or other appeared-to-be more powerful gear, the Dlux 8 makes me relaxed and makes taking photos less stressful (in terms of carrying/protecting/expecting) and yet, it is powerful enough to allow me try new things and as a result really enjoying it! ❤ Thank you for sharing your thoughts and I'm very happy for having stumbled over them 🙏📷
Thank you very much 😀 I am very happy you like the DL8 😀🙌🏽
David thank you and Yasmeena for another great video. When traveling I don't try to create the "perfect" shot. I photograph what grabs my eye and do the best I can to expose it properly. I never put pressure on myself to look for that. I don't think that I would enjoy photography looking for the perfect shot every time I press the shutter. God bless you both.
I don't think this could be possible because over time we always change and something we loved "yesterday" may be less favorable tomorrow and so, as we change, our perception of "perfect" may change. On the other side, if this " perfect shot" really existed we would have to stop photography since there would be no point to continue something after you reached the peak. 😀All the best to you and your beloved ones 😀🙌🏽
So true. Our life experience and evolving perspectives inform our approach to photography.
😀🙌🏽
Happy to say the entire state of Florida was those uneducated people that never had lockdowns. We were all free to decide what was right for our individual selves. We just ran wild and mask free during the pandemic 😂 Besides that rant above from me you did exactly what we did this weekend, well almost every weekend. Get with my camera and hit the streets and have a coffee.
Which was a political decision and very reckless. Just because a lot of people make mistakes does not make it right. As a society, you, we everybody is/are not free to decide things you do not know and that was a very dangerous situation and taking such risks was extremely reckless and only politically motivated. We still do stay away from unvaccinated people and will get our 7th shot very soon. Besides, I love to hear about your weekends, photography is such a beautiful thing and coffee too. 😀🙌🏽
@@DAVCOHPHO not with our governor. He believes it. It wasn’t political. I much prefer reckless freedom over government protecting us like little children. Because they do a terrible job of protecting us as individuals. I would say government had no idea at the time and made lives worse for the most part across America while Florida prospered. You would say what our Florida governor did was politically motivated but I’m thinking the entire lockdowns, vaccines, not putting proven alternatives out the public were politically motivated and filling the pockets of politicians wallets. I guess we will never meet when I visit family in Germany next year. But I never took vaccines long before people started questioning the trust in the pharmaceutical companies like I did. No our family stopped buying canned goods, grains, processed food, all sugar or packaged foods over 15 years ago. None of us picked up Covid, we didn’t fuel the virus with the sugar and carbs it’s wants. I can’t even remember the last time I was sick. But I am guilty of the occasional cheat with a beer. What the governments should have been pushing so hard is for people to get out and exercise. Lose weight. Stop eating the foods that are going to kill you if you get Covid at the time. Tell you straight up if you’re fat you are much more likely to die if you get Covid. But they didn’t. They acted like they cared but they don’t. You need to care for yourself.
So either my post just didn’t make it. Or it got removed. I was friendly and didn’t say anything mean to you so I’m going to assume it just didn’t get posted and try again and I will know soon enough.🤔 With our governor it wasn’t political he believes what he does. I’ll take dangerous reckless freedom every time over government control thinking they know better what is best for every individual. I would say the government was reckless and didn’t know what they were doing. Florida just decided to leave it up to you on you how it was best to decide to handle your own health. And we came out pretty good overall through the hell. 54 and never even flu had a shot. None of us got this vaccine or got Covid. My job takes me into hundreds of homes every month so I was constantly exposed. Healthy living, no vaccine for me or my family. We will be visiting Germany next year to visit family, I guess we won’t meet 😂 If our governments wanted to help the public through Covid they should have been pushing personal health. The virus fed off of body fat. Drop the sugars. Drop the alcohol. Drop the grains that produce sugar in your body. Drop the carbs. Stop buying canned foods. Loose weight which was the number one killer for Covid. But the government doesn’t care about you as an individual and they never will no matter who is in office. I guess I’ll add that I didn’t from the last post they do a wonderful chalk art sidewalk competition every year and the kids were just brilliant as always.
@@WhoIsSerafin Right, we had no idea and therefore, we had to be careful. I prefer to listen to experts like Dr. Fauci and not politicians like deSantis or whoever. I do agree on many points with what you say but this one particular point I see totally different. As I said, we took all the vaccines, 7th shot coming next and we still wear masks in order to protect us against all kinds of virus infections, the flu etc which I always fell victim to, especially in the cold season. No unvaccinated person(s) comes into our home, outside it is a different story, we cannot check that anyway, so we could meet if you want. 😀
@@WhoIsSerafin I agree we disagree here and I have to say you are one of the very few who I disagree with on this point but you have valid points, you do not display that nearly religious disdain for science etc. All good 😀🙌🏽
I already have a GRIII, would it make more sense to go for a A7Cii or another fixed lens like the X100VI and DL8? The palm size of the GRiii is great but the A7Cii is only slightly more than the Fuji and Leica, keen to have something that can potentially dowell in low light/astral photography (but not a major focus for usage)
This is a very difficult question since so much here depends on personal preferences. Since I was never interested in astral photography I am sorry to be not much of a help here. As far as low light is concerned, FX100VI does a great job and THIS was/is a very important, an essential feature for my work.
After years of experience, I can say that the D7 is definitely NOT a travel camera. Oh yes, some nice art shots in the Louvre or in a fancy coffee bar in Brookly … no problems. However…. don’t take it with you in the mountains: it’s doesn’t like the cold. The tropics? Nope : it hates hot humid environments. Winter in Belgium??? Don’t even think about it. Long story short: my D7 is falling apart. The back screen has multiple dark spots, there are visible dust devils on the sensor, the lens gets stuck very often. The controls are flimsy and the build quality is ok-ish but not to Leica standards (made by Panasonic by the way) In conclusion: nice little fashion statement camera for in town, musea or a family dinner. It’s NOT a photography tool for serious travelers. Hopefully your D8 is more robust.
I do not shoot in the mountains, nor in the tropics. Besides, I have never ever heard of all these issues you list and even more, many cameras do not "like" cold or humidity. We are talking about travel and not fully-fledged pro cameras like Nikon and Canon big bodies. Therefore ...
Check FujiFilm X-T30 ii.. its snaller and lighter
Hi David! Late to the party but I believe if you shoot with a pin-hole camera and make money with it then you are a professional. People get caught up with specs and what other people them are cameras "worth" purchasing. It has become more and more evident that most people need guidance not just with photography but all aspects of their lives. Do what you feel is right for you and ignore the noise.
Thanks a lot, I could not agree more 😀🙌🏽
I chose the Canon R6 Mk2 not because it's a full-frame, but because the other specifications were very interesting. I'm quite happy that it's full frame when I shoot with low light, but I'm also quite unhappy that full frame objectives are so expensive.
It is a terrific camera at an amazing price. You can use aps-c lenses but be careful with the crop!
Of course we’ll stay with you! These things happen. From your title I was afraid someone had stolen something.
Thank you 😊
I’m a lover of the Q2. Went out and bought the D-Lux 8 yesterday. Such a lovely camera; fits right in my (expensive) Bellingham bag. Haters are going to hate, right :)?
I could not agree more 😀🙌🏽
Whenever thoughts of full frame being better than APS-c or micro 4/3, I think of the masters of photography and the gear they worked with-and then those thoughts are suddenly put into proper perspective.
I often re-watch your videos (multiple times). But it’s always a pleasure to see your new videos.
Thank you very much 😀
Not that I would purchase such garbage and have no need of, but, thank you for the info about dji. 👍
Thank YOU for caring. 🙌🏽
Interesting you chose this topic. I was just looking into Nikon Zf vs. Zfc in the last days. I am an amateur. Sadly a lot of great lenses only are available for full frame. I can use them, yes, but in APS-C I pay the full frame price and cannot use it all. If I look at Nikon, several features are first reserved for full frame and only come to APS-C years later, if at all. Of course Fuji is the alternative here, but I am mostly a Nikon guy. For hobbyists digital photography became more expensive in the last decade. Which is okay, smartphones took away a lot of revenue from them, so they go for the professionals and those with a lot of money first. Aside from Fuji the other big camera companies treat APS-C like the red headed step child. That's why agree totally, only a fraction of those who shoot full frame really "need" full frame. But companies smartly withhold the best user expierence from their APS-C models and drive people towards full frame. And I don't want to make Fuji look too good here, either 😁 Fuji does great PR by providing examples in their ads that APS-C is just as good for most photographers. But on the other hand Fuji's GFX medium format system is sold with the claim that medium format can do what full frame can't 😅 So I guess we are caught in the web of the manufacturors. But it's good that you made this a topic. Escpecially new people in the hobby with just enough money on their hands let themselves being talked into full frame very easily.
I once was a "Nikon guy" too but they TOTALLY failed with mirrorless 10 years ago. Why don't you have a look at Canon where you find a lot of excellent APS-C cameras and nice lenses, too? AND, I know firsthand, Olympus (also Panasonic) have excellent mft cameras with some excellent lenses.
Thx for sharing another great video. Have a great time.
Thank you very much, have a great time, too! 😀
Thanks for sharing! :)
Thanks so much 😀♥
In my experience spanning decades in photography, I've seen how both RAW and JPEG formats serve their distinct purposes. RAW is often invaluable for technical or business-critical images, offering flexibility during post-processing that some projects truly demand. However, I believe JPEG is perfectly sufficient for most scenarios, especially where images will primarily be viewed on screens and mobile devices. The intense attachment some photographers have to RAW often creates a divide in discussions like this. The truth is, at the high resolutions and pixel densities common on today's screens, the need for RAW can sometimes be overstated-JPEG provides a balance of quality and manageable file size that fits most everyday viewing purposes. That said, RAW has its place when specific, precise quality control is essential. Each format has its strengths, and it's about knowing when each truly matters.... Personally.. I shoot 98% JPEG and no client ever complained about that, anytime, any place.
I DO need control etc BUT I know what I want to achieve when I take the photo therefore I EXTREMELY RARELY also take RAWs at the same time. I am against this ideological nonsense "you are not pro unless ..." I anyway don't care for what others say, I simply could not care less, as even my parents realized, but there is so much nonsense and many people are really insecure. I see it in my workshops. Same here, never any complaints about my work. 😀
I used to do wedding photography, I was always very clear that I will take photos using filters, etc., but I will not edit out any blemishes of the couple. I want the day to be remembered for how everyone looked, not my vision of what they should look like. Many potential customers did not like my approach, but those that did, were very appreciative after seeing the photos
We are talking about different topics and still, I know A LOT of couples who DEMANDED BEAUTIFICATION in post.
Like a wise man once said … „Never feed the trolls!“ It‘s an already lost war to fight.
Thanks David, very good video, I agree with you.
Thank you!
I am so glad to hear you remain a true photographer and not a computer graphics expert. I like to spend my time getting my photo right and not thinking about any “enhancements” on the computer. I thought I was in the minority.
I thought so too. 🙌🏽 So many spray and pray but this is lottery, not photography. I KNOW what I want to achieve and therefore shooting in jpeg is no problem for me.
I still use LR5.7 because I dont want a subscription model. I dont want AI for my photos.
Your choice. Your photos are already AI-ed, by your sensor and the software you anyway use. AI only helps me to achieve things quicker. There is no virtue in stupid manual masking a sky etc when AI can do it with one click. Whatever, AI is here to stay and it will get rather more than less and I welcome that.
To clone out or not to clone out depends on the purpose of the photograph. If you’re taking the photograph from a journalistic/documentarian point of view, then cloning out (or any other manipulation) shouldn’t even be considered. If you’re photographing for art, then get rid of the power lines, clone in a better sky, and remove the guy standing in the middle of the scene.
Exactly what I said.
Great video. I am on the market at the moment. Initially had a shortlist of the Ricoh GR IIIx, Fuji X100VI or the Leica D-Lux 8. After watching many videos on each and fighting through some of the clear marketing from some Yuotubers, I decided on the Leica. My primary use case is street photography and having something that fits in my pocket and is easy to grab and shoot when I am out riding my bicycle on trails.
You will love it 😀
One has a zoom lens, is £250 cheaper and has a Leica lens. Yup, it's a tough one...
Of course, you can compare apples with oranges but I will not participate in such nonsense.
many thanks David. Like the black and white!. Microphone audio also very good. Topic is excellent as always. I used to feel a bit of a fraud re cloning. But now I think creativity is giving us so much more.
😀
Good Sunday David. I agree that a photographers interpretation of a scene and how he edits it is totally up to him. Like you said when you add to a photo say for instance a tree or anything that isn't a natural part of the scene then the piece of work isn't a photograph in the true sense. I guess you could call it "art" but not a photograph. With regards to something like power lines and supports that a photographer is bothered by or feels ruins his interpretation of the scene it's fine to remove them or clone them out. Who's to say that the photograph wasn't taken before the power lines and supports were installed. Some people look through a critical lens about all aspects of life. They live to criticize. The tint of the sky or how you edit your photos are how you feel they should be presented. If someone doesn't like what they see then keep your mouth closed and move on to something else to criticize. Great topic and presentation. 🙏
Thank you very much 😀🙌🏽
👍📷👏😊
😀
Thanks for sharing your insight, David. I am on the same page as you. I usually do minimal editing but sometimes I go wild with experimenting and I think that's ok. I, personally, do not care for rules of "authenticity" since I am not a photojournalist etc.
Thanks so much, I could not agree more. 😀♥
I couldn’t agree more to your thoughts at the beginning of your video. Thanks for sharing! Regarding the topic of copying another style might seem to be very amazing. But just think about a painter pretending of creating his picture not in his own style but e.g. as a Van Gogh or Rembrandt. I wouldn’t agree that this is his art anymore because the artistic brilliance was just copied. And in my eyes a true artist at the end is also recognized by his own unique style.
@@foto.grafiker Yes, in principal I agree but of course Rembrandt was not the only one to use that style. Many Flemish/Dutch painters used similar "light", brushing technique etc. We do not copy here, we transfer moods which we anyway could mimic through presets, either our own or buy them, or spend hours pushing sliders, playing with curves etc. I see a lot of benefit here and I will not hesitate to copy myself, just as an example.
@@DAVCOHPHOthat makes sense to transform your own style into a preset. Fastens your work and that’s highly welcome. Might have misunderstood the difference between same and slightly same.
@@foto.grafiker Look, of course you can take one of Annie Leibovitz's photos and copy the light, color etc settings BUT that does not turn your own photos into one of her masterpieces. I sent you a link, there you see how this feature works 😀
I agree with most of this.
That is also what I say. A camera is a tool. So it is to be used on what it was designed for. If it fits on what you are looking for, get it. I never ask about the video quality. If I want video, I will look for a camcorder.
Exactly what I say. 😀🙌🏽
Hello! And thank you for the video. Can I ask, between the Leica and the Fuji, which one would you recommend for an amateur photographer like me? I’m usually interested in portraits of people and closeups. Not so much landscapes. Also, why did you buy both? Just for your own testing? Thanks!
Thank you for your comment. In fact these cameras are very different. FFX100VI, see my videos here, is a serious contender to Leica Q series whereas LDL8 is an everyday camera, at least for me. It offers great IQ and you can basically do everything, just indoor lowlight can be challenging.
Minolta dynax 5D 🎉🎉🎉 me too. My first camera too
😀🙌🏽
I began the "small setup" for my street photography with a GRII together with a Sony A6000. Sold it and bought an X100V, witch I still own. Then I bought a Q3. It's the only camera I've used since. My wife uses the Fuji now and then. My Nikon DSLR with 8 lenses..are on the shelf. The Q3 is a beast. May be I ad an GRIII some day for the pocket ability.
Sounds good 😀
I will point out that if you know what you’re doing jpeg is often the way to go. RAW is more forgiving. Paradoxically, RAW might be more suitable for beginners than for pros.
Absolutely, this is what I kind of said/tried to get across. AND it is for those who have no idea what their photos should be like, experiment in post and then go with what they like IN THAT MOMENT which is why they want to be able to return and do something else. This is not me, this is not photography as I feel, understand, and practice but okay. What really annoys me is that religious "you are not a pro UNLESS ... (raw, full frame etc.)". I love to debunk and destroy bs 😀
Lovely and fresh. The two of you
Thank you 😊
Nice to see you both. Take care of yourself, old boy.
Thank you David for another interesting talk. Nice to see you both and I hope this duo continues. Hope you feel better soon.
Thanks so much 😀 We will certainly appear together more often here and on Yasmeena's profile (www.youtube.com/@yascohpho), too.
Thank you for suffering through your sickness to provide another great and compelling video. Jasmeena did a great job as the interviewer. I was wondering after about 10 minutes in and seeing the direction you were heading what your thoughts were on Ansel Adams. You went there shortly after and answered my thoughts. I see some tick tocks and youtube videos of "street photographers asking random people to pose and I don't understand how that's street photography. Looks like outdoor studio work to me. Maybe I'm missing something. More to say but I don't want to make this comment a novel. Thanks David and Yasmeena! Greatly appreciate you.
Thanks so much for your kind and generous comment, we really appreciate it 😀
My best wishes for a speedy recovery David.
Thank you very much 😀

Trimming them, splicing, adding music, and then voices, etc, just for the fun of it when i go out with the wife for a day. It took 10 hours to do this 6 minute video but it was good for the brain to learn something new, and it helps make you more creative for photography. I got a copy right strike, whatever that means on TH-cam, but I don't care.
I could not agree more. In reality, we only age when we stand still, when we give up on being curious, when we lean back and only do the bare minimum which is why many much younger people seem prematurely old. With regard to the copyright strike, did you use music?
@@DAVCOHPHO I did. From my play list. They have not taken it down so I guess I just won’t make my millions from it 😂
@@WhoIsSerafin So, whatever money you may make from it, if you are already in the TH-cam partner program, goes to the music owner and that is a pity. Maybe find some free to use music or sign up with for ex. artlist?
I am on the waitlist and can’t wait to have this camera. It checks every box for my needs. I have read so many people how disappointed they are and the fact that not much has change. However, there is something to say about not changing something that just works. Leica have updated what they needed to and left things alone that did not need changing.
I could not agree more and I DO enjoy the update and it HAS BECOME a different camera. I am sure you will love it. 😊
I shoot JPEG with my DLSR's when I know there are no problems with light and I like it because as you said, the work has already been done during the photographing. I shoot RAW when I know the circomstances are phototechnically not, or even far from, ideal, with te idea... maybe I get something out of it haha... With my new Leica DLux 8 till now I only shoot DNG because I love the felxibility of the DNG-files. I am amazed every time again when I work with these files in Lightroom. And I love it doing so. And that is for me the point.. making photo's and post-processing must be fun, relaxing and sometimes amazing....
😀
He spent almost 15 minutes talking about nothing
Then don't listen 🤣 But you are nothing but those wannabe provocateurs, useless for everything, useful for nothing 😜 Dismissed!
