A Hairdresser's Car No More - 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLK 350 AMG Sport Review and Test Drive

- SOLD The third generation SLK from Mercedes-Benz managed to ditch the shortcomings of the previous models and become a potent, competitive luxury roadster that offered a real alternative to the Porsche Boxster or BMW Z4. While I appreciated the styling of the first generation, quite a few people found it lacking if not downright bland, and the 2nd generation seemed a bit confused inside and out. Not so this one - the looks borrow heavily from the SLS AMG supercar and the SL-class from 2013 onward - a nifty conflation of straight lines and sumptuous curves, with the AMG Sport package adding aggressive bodywork and very sporty wheels. The SLK finally looks the part.
Under the hood, the good news continues. The new for 2012 60 degree V6 uses VVT and Direct Injection technology to bring 302 ponies to the table, the same number produced by the 5.0 V8 in the SL pre-2007. The 7-speed automatic isn't as sporty as the PDK or DCT in the BMW, but does have flippety paddles and works even better when shifting by your right foot in sport mode - and the sound from the pipes is glorious.
The interior is very well appointed and comfortable - the seats are designed for comfort, and coddle passengers even on a long drive. The wheel is very sporty, even with the wood trim package, and the ergonomics are crisp and clean, with the COMAND system providing ample infotainment.
So gone are the days when the SLK was considered a ladies' or hairdresser car - sort of. Unfortunately, also gone are the day of the SLK altogether. Rebadged as an SLC a couple of years ago, Mercedes-Benz will cease production of the small luxury roadster with no immediate plans to replace it. Just as soon as they get it right, it's over. Isn't that always the way?

Brilliant video, well explained and narrated. I personally rate the SLK as a roadster, after also having persoanlly driven a BMW Z3 and Mazda Mx5. I have owned my SLK for over a year, and you get comfort, good acceleration, good stable road holding on the corners and that all important cool factor when the roof comes down automatically. You feel so good when that roof is down. They are good reliable cars and the luggage space in the trunk is also as big as many saloons, plus they have good fuel economy. I highly rate the Mercedes SlK. I would not drive one otherwise. . . Rob, UK.
I have an SLK250 (wish it was 350/55amg) its not a bad car but im not 100% satisfied
its not as fast as i wish it was
also it has some squeaks here and there, for example when you set passengers seat to full back (its quite small inside so tall passengers do it to the maximum) then on quick sharp turns the seat is squeaking - i find it weird for Benz car, but thats how it is

I had one of these for a while. I can't tell you why but it felt so much faster than the numbers would suggest. Maybe because it's so small? I also had the 2.1 litre diesel for a while (250CDI). There is absolutely no reason for that car to exist.

I prefer the looks of the 2009 slk 350 . The 09 has that McLaren front end that just looks great in my opinion.

Would I be correct to assume the headroom in this car is no better than all other two seat Benz convertibles I’ve tried on? Those over six feet need not apply?
In case anyone’s still reading this three years later: I’m 6’3” and fit comfortably if snugly in mine, though I do drive with my knees up against the dash in order to lean the seat back at a reasonable angle.
