      Heard a couple of different stories about him, on one day the extras has already gone past their fifth "Meal penalty" (you get paid more if you don't eat after five hours but most extras would rather just have lunch than get a meal penalty). Danny demanded that the extras be fed or he was going to walk off the set. On another day he had a food fight with the extras - wish I could have been there. I showed up the next day and saw eggs and tomatoes smeared all over the wall and was like "what the hell happened here" and the other extras said "oh, we had a food fight with Danny Devito".

      I agree with that. He played this character very well for the ambiance of a dark film. I wouldn't call it acting at its finest, but it was good. I say, it's worth a "C+" or "B-".

      @karlsmith6690 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a few.
      1) In 8th grade, my English teacher was terrible. A girl could hand in an assignment late because she understood what they were going through, she marked me down because I had to type rather than write my test answers once because I injured my hand to the point I couldn't physically hold a pen and could only type left handed. (10 points off because it had to be written, but girl hands in assignment late, no points off.)
      Also, side note that is minor. My grandmother was an American Citizen that grew up in Canada and so she used Canadian spelling for some words. I grew up in the US, but she often was there when I came home and helped me with my homework). So, I picked up spelling for some words that aren't the American way, I got points taken off for "Spelling errors." I think it was just more crap from her to be honest.
      But the way I was treated in that class and another English Teacher in High School killed any desire I had to write anything.
      2) I had an art teacher in 9th grade that always complain about how I chose to paint paintings that we had no real instructions on. We had to do a self portrait and most people did it as close to realistic as they could. I didn't want to do the assignment, but had to. So I did myself in Red Scale essentially. Various shades of red rather than more normal colors and I thought it looked cool, I loved it. She gave me a C or D for failure to follow instructions ... the instructions were literally "Paint a self portrait." Nothing on how. It was shown in the art show and classmates of mine recognized it. However, when a girl "expressed" herself it was set as an "example of how to put yourself in the painting."
      She killed my desire for art. I still occasionally do something things, but they aren't even close to what I did prior just because of one teacher.
      On a side note: That class is also the reason Beyonce annoys me. Hearing Destiny's Child pretty much every day drove me mad.
      3) I had an argument with a co-worker that I don't like it when women tell me that I should smile because I look more handsome when I smile. Or commenting me when I get a haircut. She told me "They are just being nice." but if a fucking man said something like that ... it's sexist. I am like WTF ... I am pretty sure the reason why the sexual harassment between the sexes is more so that men don't realize they are being harassed while women consider far more things harassment.
      4) Sometimes I take one of my nieces out for my sister, she has 4 kids total, 3 are girls. This past weekend I felt the eyes of a older woman just watching me with my youngest niece while we were having lunch at burger king after I took her to horse back riding for my sister. Didn't say anything, just I say her looking at me and felt I was being stared at when I left. It wasn't the first time something like this happened. Luckily, I know a lot of people who tell me that I am a great uncle for helping out my sister and that what I do for my nieces and nephew is something they wish they had when raising their kids.

    Longtime viewer, first time commenter. I just want to say I rewatched this movie for the first time in years yesterday and have gained a completely new perspective on the scene in which Selina becomes Catwoman, and I believe the Cinema Sinner has misunderstood the tone of the scene. Until recently, I too didn’t really understand why she would spend so much time destroying her apartment, but now I think it’s meant to imply the violation she felt when her boss, a man she is supposed to be able to trust and rely on, attempted to murder her. Not to get all Gender Studies 101 on Cinema Sins, but I believe it was meant to be comparative to sexual assault as she lived through a traumatic experience dealt to her body and destroying her apartment was a way to regain some level of control. When she realized she still felt anguish over her circumstances, she planned to exact revenge while maintaining her anonymity, and in the world of Batmen, it stands to reason she would give her avenging alter ego a bit of flair and personality. Feel free to say I’m reading too much into a potentially silly scene in an obviously very silly movie, but I think that this is part of that darker side of Batman Burton began exploring that lost him Forever and Robin.

    • @bb-ih9hg

      It's def a sexual assault allegory and I didn't realize it until a few years ago and even tho I do hate that trope for the most part, I love it for Selina Kyle. She takes control of her sexuality in a dominatrix type suit and whip. This movie is so good.

    • @FridgeChic
      @FridgeChic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I just rewatched it today and while I don't think SEXUAL assault has anything to do with it, I think she had a very near death experience thrust on her and her old infantile existence had no meaning anymore. Imagine if she had died and all that would have remained of her were pink cat sweaters, stuffed animals and a freaking doll house! She was a very late bloomer and wanted to affirm her womanhood (and sexuality) before it was too late.

    I still love this movie! I think that a lot of the sins you gave it were elements in the plot that were meant to be strange, such as Penguin being raised by penguins. Tim Burton (the director) was probably going for a dark fairy tale vibe. His movies don't take themselves as deadly serious as Christopher Nolan's, so I think we can give Burton leeway that we don't give Nolan. The stuff that made no sense in the Nolan films, especially The Dark Knight Rises, are MUCH less forgivable.

    She doesn't have powers. The only time Catwoman had powers was in the shitty-ass Halle Berry 2004 film. A film regarded by many as a complete insult to the character for the very reason of her having super-human powers in it. What makes Catwoman Catwoman is that her power is the lack-there of. She is a woman of seduction, confidence, and ruthlessness. Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman is what makes this movie great. She nails it (no punt intended) completely. Her character is so thorough, so perfectly depicted, that you can use it in every Batman adaptation / world of story and it works. Without her performance in this movie it is just another live-action Batman movie like the first. The real sin is that without her character this movie falls rather flat. She binds it all together. The double-crossing and the conflicts are interesting because of her.
    "Meow" - Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman

    • @windowsVD
      @windowsVD 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      No powers? So a lonely and geeky secretary suddenly gains the ability to kick ass and kung fu, unrivaled acrobatic abilities and survive multiple gun shots? Yup, no powers at all. Pfeiffer's Catwoman isn't so much seductive and confident as she is batshit crazy and mentally unstable. Also Catwoman in the comics is rarely ruthless, she is sympathetic despite being morally ambiguous and doesn't murder innocents like Pfeiffer's Catwoman murdered the ice princess to get to Batman. Not to mention where are the cat burglar elements? Catwoman in the comics is a professional thief, it's a huge part of her character.
      There's nothing wrong in enjoying this version of Catwoman, but she is a horrible adaptation of the character.

    • @CelinettaTheWitch
      @CelinettaTheWitch 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thomas Jiang The gunshots she takes aren't lethal and you also have to think about world of story. The Tim Burton world of story for Batman Returns is not to be taken literal or seriously. We don't know enough about her to say she has no experience fighting. I'm a skinny chick that looks like a twig that can be pushed over with a glare. Meanwhile I spend my free time doing martial arts and have 0 problems taking people down.
      Did she suddenly? Maybe, but the characters are rather out-there to say the least. In the world she is a part of she is very normal and average aside from the personality.
      She is certainly a dark adaptation of the character but it makes sense in the world. She would be out of place if she was not a revenge driven insane individual.
      Cat burglar elements I do believe lack in the overall story. I think it is one thing that it touched on as being a potential part of her psyche but she gets thrown into the Batman story before it gets embedded into her image. She "robs" by breaking in, more or less. That creates the image that she is capable of it.

    • @windowsVD
      @windowsVD 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      CelinettaTheWitch I'd say taking multiple gunshots in the torso without bleeding out and surviving the electrocution that killed Max Shreck would require some superpowers. There's also certainly nothing to indicate that she has any martial arts background either. All we see is that she's a lonely secretary who lives in a small apartment. Not to mention she was easily physically intimidated by her boss, I doubt if she would be this easily intimidated if she was trained in self defense prior to getting pushed out of the building.
      So why don't we see normal people in these films take out thugs that fast? Why do we need Batman? I don't recall anyone else do flips without breaking a sweat and climb the side of a building within a second. Plus don't you think that explanation completely undervalues Catwoman as a villain? That she doesn't really have any exceptional capabilities, just some chick who just happens to not be mentally sound and dress in tight leather?
      Dark? I would say more campy with some creepy undertones than anything, and that applies for the entire film.
      Something that's vaguely hinted at doesn't excuse the lack of said characterization. Plus she went in with the intention of destroying Shreck's property.

      +Thomas Jiang I was gonna mention all this but you hit the nail on the head.

    • @CelinettaTheWitch
      @CelinettaTheWitch 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The gunshot wounds are in multiple locations that you can survive. That's beside the point as you are right on the lack of blood and the general fact that she is capable of continuing to stand. The electric shock I never believed she actually kissed. Many adaptations have developed the female tease is deadly approach. Personally I like it. This movie does require you to take not take anything seriously and suspend your disbelief. The things people survive in this movie are questionable regardless of the character. Penguins raising a disfigured boy is enough of que that you can't be critical of things like blood.
      When I say normal I did not intend to imply it takes away from the character but rather it is her personality that defines everything about her. Without the personality she is just a chick in tight leather. We don't see normal people do what she does because they are the mindless mass that is Gothem. A group of people who have to be saved from themselves because they can't see the evil right in front of them. Instead of defending themselves they just let people take and take. She was just like them. In that, she is normal and average.
      Also, it is amazing what people can do when driven into a corner or being subjected to something that break them. I've seen people who were pushed too far and out of no where beat the crap out of someone like they had been fighting for years. You push the right buttons and almost anyone can do anything. Look at Justin Bieber...(cringe)
      The kicking, jumping, etc that she gets, I always felt that was an imprint of who she always wanted to be. When she broke, nothing held her back from being that person. The revenge gave her reason. To me, it all made sense. I've never taken this movie seriously though and perhaps that is why I am not seeing what you are saying until now. To me, you can't look at this movie and apply the rules of logic. You have to go off the rules of the world of story.
      I don't believe it should be excused but I do think it was an excellent display of what she is capable of. That the cat-burglar'ing is something she can excel at. Given more screen time it would have had enough time to happen.
