In the mid-1970s in London, Mark Knopfler (lead guitar, vocals, writer) was out with some friends. They ducked into a dingy little pub to get out of the rain. They found themselves in a nearly deserted room, with just a handful of patrons propping up the bar, but in one corner was a live band playing Dixieland jazz. Despite the small, disinterested audience (who 'don't give a damn about any trumpet-playing band'), they were putting their heart and soul into the music, playing like they were in a packed house of screaming fans. At the end of their set, the band's leader stepped up and announced grandly "Thank you everyone, we are the Sultans of Swing!" The grandiose name compared to the modest surroundings struck a cord with Knopfler, and this song was the result. It's a love letter to small-time musicians, the ones who play for love of the music, don't chase trends, and don't apologise for who they are.

Love Dire Straits. They are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Brothers In Arms", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "Money For Nothing", "Walk Of Life", "Telegraph Road", "So Far Away" etc. They don't have a bad song.
I love "Lady Writer" and "Southbound again"... I recommend them.

Well you gonna have to watch it over, either with the same people, or have another guest on, because, you turned it off to Early, and missed a awesome close. Do another one, with a different guest, a lot of people are doing that. But other than that, great reaction video, keep um coming.
One of the best guitarists on the planet ever, just getting into his most iconic solo...and you stop it? To say nothing? Then, when you restart it you chat inanely over his most famous lick! THEN, at the climactic end - YOU CUT IT OFF!!! Disgraceful, you should be ashamed.

I have seen it so many times, I was there when it was filmed and it is full of so many memories. The whole place was rocking, I was on the balcony (just out of shot a few rows back and you could feel it bouncing!
For me, at the time and re-watching it, Terry Williams on the drums smashed it out of the park. I think we knew how good he others were.

I was 18, second gig I went to, the first was the Rolling Stones, So I thought this was normal!
When you are that young, you don't really appreciate it so much, although I do remember this better than most of the others.
We are lucky that it was recorded so well at the time and we can enjoy it again and again.

Never heard this band until today. I’m 36. What a groove this song has. I loved it. The drummer is an absolute beast!!!! He’s not sloppy sounding. You can hear each drum hit with clarity. Reminds me of TOOL’s drummer Danny Carey.

Mark doesn't use a guitar pick, he plucks and finger picks his leads with a down-tuned guitar so he gets those unusual sounding scales and runs.
He plays in e standard for nearly everything. Romeo and Juliet and some slide stuff are some of the rare exceptions

Their music incorporates elements of alternative rock, funk, punk rock, hard rock, hip hop, and psychedelic rock, and their music videos are very creative, masterfully done. What happened to the ending? I've seen twenty reactions to this song and NO ONE cut off the very end. If you did that on purpose, do not do that again. It's not nice to disappoint someone who has watched this whole video with you only to see it get cut off before the end. If it wasn't your fault, please fix your video playback system.
