Alchemy is one of the best live albums ever made. Tunnel Of Love should be the next one, along with Telegraph Road and Private Investigations Here was one of the few times MK was ALMOST upstaged---drummer Terry Williams was absolute fire(there's a point where MK talks with bassist John Illsley and nods at Williams, they both grin)
Mark is still at it. His new album drops April 12. He may not be as quick in his 70's as he was in the 70's but the sound is pure. He has been a gift to generations and needs to be known by them imho. His solo career is starting to dwarf Dire Straits in terms of great songs.
Dire Straits started as a four-part band, and that's how they recorded Sultans on their first album. The band kept getting bigger, though. Keyboards first, then saxophone. They had a pedal steel in there before they were done. And Mark's solo stuff could have anything, including fiddle and bagpipe.
My sister got me to stop and listen to a Bob Dylan song and asked me to guess the other player on the song, took only 1 note for me to figure it was Mark Knopfler. She knew id guess it but couldnt believe it took just 1 note to know it was him.
Mark Knopfler, Lead guitar. Hal Lindes, Rhythm guitar. John Illsey, Bass guitar. Terry Williams, Drums. Alan Clark, Keys. Additional guest keys for these shows, Tommy Mandel.
This is awesome. They were on fire on this tour. The best version ever of Sultans. Mark is a genius. Next for you: Telegraph road - Tunnel of love - Private investigations - Romeo and Juliet - Solid rock from the same live album.
The drummer Terry Williams father was in the audience this night, so he really let loose. Marks picking came from when he could only afford a second hand acoustic he found he got a better sound without a plectrum
There were 2 keyboard players Alan Clark and Tommy Mandel, but Mandel was hired for this tour and was never part of Dire Straits. After this tour Mark met Guy Fletcher while working on a movie score and he became the 2nd Dire Straits keyboardist and stilll plays in Marks solo band until today.
This recording is 40 years old and still sounds fantastic. I was at this gig and you felt that they were really having fun, they got it spot on. Sometimes the solos go on too long, never felt that way at this gig, it was really banging! For me, Terry Williams was the unexpected star, you won't see better live drumming. There were two keyboardists, as said below. Now you have to react to the Alchemy version of Telegraph Road, it was the encore
Hi. Love your reaction. Dire Straits Live is so much better. I recommend Private Investigations and Callng Elvis Live Dire Straits " On The Night" 1992. Two of my favorite performances. Thanks. Love your channel. Cheers, all the best from Australia 👍🎸🎸🎸
Mark Knopfler IS considered one the greatest guitar players in the world and it is because of way more than his 'tone'. He can use a lot of notes or speak volumes with just a few and THAT sets him apart, because there are few in the world that can do that. It's a thousand times harder than playing fast and saying nothing which is what most 'metal', hard rock guitarists only are able to cobble together.
Fun Facts: Mark Knopler (red) naturally played left handed, but learned to play right handed for better comtrol. He didnt use a pick. David Knopler, black suit is Mark's younger brother. Terry Williams was the drummer. His Dad had never seen him perform at a live concert. This was the first. Terry went crazy. John Isley Bass player killed it. His choreography kept things moving.
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising. It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.🤗 What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having. Making a living like that wouldn't suck.
I love that drummer! ♥Wish he was my grandson so I could listen to him all the time, playing out in my yard for the whole neighborhood. LOL Of course Mark K. ain't so bad either if you prefer guitar. He's just cool.
Ive seen dozens of reaction videos of this Song and you are the First One that bothers to comment on the Guitar performance. Ive played this Song in this version for over 25 years now and yet whenever i listen to It It still seems completely on a different level. Playing It the way he does Is extremely, extremely difficult.
If you like live performances, you should check out (most any performance of) Break Down by Tom Petty. I promise you will love it, regardless of how you feel about the studio version now.
I know the song i react to the reaction great job you're correct about the tone enjoyed youre reaction so I subscribe like you're style wait till the end and good breakdown telegraph Road is a great story song written while on tour and driving down telegraph Road long song but quality music
Mark used 3 finger pickin like on a banjo. Amazing sound and talent
Look at "Telegraph Road" from the same concert... Sooo good too!
All of Alchemy by dIRE sTRAITS
I still think this is the best. 🙂
Or The Walk of life
Best live I’ve ever seen. Some are very close, but this is it. It’s what music was like in the ‘60’s & ‘70’s.

Best live performance of all time

I saw his new album was coming out.

"serve somebody?"
Whenever someone does a reaction to anything, and they give a smile like that at the end... That's why I love reaction channels
You're a great reviewer. Enjoying every minute of your really thoughtful insights

Magnificent video. Glad it was captured for the world to see. Nice commentary.
Terry Williams,,my inspiration to play drums 🤟🏴
Great reaction and you're definitely right to highlight Terry Williams on drums, he added just so much with this version 🔥🔥🔥
The drummer Terry Williams father was in the audience this night, so he really let loose.
Marks picking came from when he could only afford a second hand acoustic he found he got a better sound without a plectrum
That´s the real Way to hear this...... Knowing the Studio Version to realize HOW good this Version is! One of the best Live Performances ever!
Great reaction. Anything from Alchemy is 🔥🔥🔥🔥. Tunnel of Love and Telegraph Road contain some of the best guitar solos you will ever hear. Subscribed.
There are a lot of great bands with great guitar solos.
And there is Dire Straits / Mark Knopfler
I love how they are all having fun especially the back up keyboardist (top right) is jumping thru the whole time.
Williams was brilliant!
Best live performance ever 😊😊

So happy I grew up in the uk with all these great British bands so lucky

I hope you know how lucky you are to have been there to be part of that show
Tone deaf 78 year old has never heard a tighter group. Chet Atkins I am sure applauds Mark and the drummer Ah!

This is not David Knopfler
Héllo de France Bonjour regarder le live Télégraph Road aussi super 😊😊
Give a listen to the album "Neck and Neck", Mark Knopfler and Chet Atkins. Two guitar icons having a grand acoustic time.
Love the shirt mate I'm an Iron myself.
Such a charismatic dude Terry was 🤘🤘🤟
Mark Knoppfler has just auctioned a number of his guitars via Christies. Raised £millions for charity.
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising.
It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.🤗
What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having.
Making a living like that wouldn't suck.
Even better live. Excellent, thanks Wayne.
Play some Dire Gays!
Actually...Dire Gaze might be a good band name.
I love that drummer! ♥Wish he was my grandson so I could listen to him all the time, playing out in my yard for the whole neighborhood. LOL Of course Mark K. ain't so bad either if you prefer guitar. He's just cool.

More than tone, the word you must be searching for is "their voice".
The father of terry Williams was in the audince and apparently he went for it.
Maybe try out Walk of life, this is a good fun track.
Watch “Frankenstein by” Edgar Winter, live. Amazing man.
Just do it!
If you like live performances, you should check out (most any performance of) Break Down by Tom Petty. I promise you will love it, regardless of how you feel about the studio version now.
Should have went for the original studio version.
Telegraph Road
You need to pause it and comment or you'll get demonetised my friend
What happened here is that GOD decided to come down and play and posses Mark Knopfler and that guitar was never equaled. The GOAT
Majestic fingers bet the wife is well happy...lol
Shredding ability should be irrelevant. It's tone and attitude that matter
Are you fan of Uriah Heep ?
Sorry - but were you listening to the same song you were playing? Your timing is pretty rough if it was!! Even the audience was keeping time.
"what they call rock and roll" - it is perhaps worth noting that he is mocking dudes like you.
