    FDM prints, no matter the material, are not food safe, as it is impossible to clean them correctly, and bacteria start to grow at the layer lines. The ice glasses may be OK, but the can tops are a very bad idea.

      Very good point Rick. Thank you! Be safe with your 3D prints everyone!

      Not true at all. PETG is rated food safe and dishwasher safe. I have many things I have been using for years made of it and wash it all the time and have not had any issues. I think you are confused with how FDM printers work. There is no gap in the layer lines and if you have a good enough printer, the layer lines are pretty much nonexistent. Make them 100 percent infill and print at .1 later and you will be fine.

      @@Pewpewnation123 the filament is ok but not the print, when you are printing anywhere is in a contaminated area for food stuff

      @@Pewpewnation123 the problem isnt the gaps in the layer lines. If there were gaps then it wouldn't even be water tight. The problem is all the tiny crevices created by the layer lines, which very much encourages bacteria growth. Also I don't know who lied to you, but even the best FDM printer on the market will put out prints with visible layer lines, even with smaller layer heights
      You can get around it though. Coat the print in a food safe epoxy resin and problem solved

    i wonder how much material costs are for items like those desktop bins? i have no idea about material costs, so would like to know about the cost vs. convenience ... for instance, it's nice to be able to make items 'to fit', but it wouldn't be so keen if a little bin cost $3.00...

    • @macro3dprints
      @macro3dprints  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Great question! The black desktop tray holder was 77g, and the black PLA material was $0.022/g so the material cost for that part was $1.69. Each drawer used 14g of material, and the yellow PLA material was $.031/g so the material cost for the 5 drawers was $2.18. So in total you're looking at about $3.88 for the whole thing. So yeah you may be able to find a cheaper option somewhere that's also more convenient, but the customization is the best part! And you can have fun making it :)

      That is a good question! Perhaps the layers are not sticking to each other very well. Try increasing the temperature slightly to melt the plastic more and let each layer bond to the next a little better. Don’t go hotter than the filament specifies though!

      Hi there! That is a great application for 3D printing! 160 parts is still small enough scale for 3D printing to make sense, and allows you to iterate on a bunch of designs without sinking coat into a mile for plastic.
      I recommend finding someone local who can take measurements and who has a 3D printer, and seeing if they would do it for you for a little cash! You can start by looking at websites like thingiverse.com or printables.com for some design ideas.
      Best of luck!!
