As a controller, I promise that 9 times out of 10 the controller isn't actually a jerk who hates you. It's more that during those busy moments the pressure we're under can seep through in our voice sometimes, we're only human after all. Don't worry, we're here to help; ask if you don't understand, and just tell us if you can't do something! :)
Absolutely, that's why I also said you 'might' encounter an (whether it be seemingly) angry/frustrated controller some time. For me it only happened once or maybe twice in my VATSIM career so you can do the math :)
@@mikkykyluc5804 Hi I am a new player to vatsim. And I keep getting kicked. When Im just trying to learn. I also get nervous when I speak And It always makes me feel like i know nothing. Are you able to help me?
as a person who deals with anxiety and depression flight sim is one of the tools I have to get away from the world I jumped onto the vatsim network for the first time this year after watching your videos (not making excuses my weaknesses its actually as I see it as one of my strength ) but you make it sound so easy and even with the few flights I've done on the vatsim network everyone from pilots and ATC are awesome its great community
Man, I've done my very first flight on Vatsim today. Unfortunately it ended in a disconnect because I spawned on the furthest ramp from the runway in use in Gatwick at a busy night. Was writing down everything and the controller was super nice but it ended in a disconnect in the middle of my taxi, because the controller caught me off-guard notifying me that I missed a turn and I had to go straight to this through this etc, etc... It was a busy airport and the nerves got to me, didn't know what to do and where to proceed so I disconnected. Never felt so nervous in my life, since my GCSE, BUT I came away with the knowledge that everything up to that point (clearance, readback and just the phraseology in general) I've actually done correctly and for me that's something. Less things to worry about in my next try. And I'm looking forward to my next try. Your videos are awesome and full of help, keep up the good work. :)
Thank you for this. I’ve had a lot of troubles with VATSIM from the start and I’ve managed to find a group in my VA who fly with me regularly on VATSIM. One of my ways to make it a little less stressful it to bring back the fun into it. I flew to Madeira and taught the other pilots how to land there (Rwy 05) mid flight and they had two go arounds 😂. It really helps to lighten the mood when you maybe don’t always take it too serious. Thanks for the video!
I did my first vatsim flight a couple days ago it took me 5 minutes to get the Clearance correct atc was amazing very kind and didn’t even get mad made me feel much more confident
This man really helps, I’m still a new and young vatsim pilot, I’ve only done 1 successful flight from Amman to Sabina in Turkey and it was smooth. But today I got stressed and I got myself in trouble in a busy Gatwick.
Fantastic video! I suffer from anxiety and am trying to overcome it by flying on vatsim because I get very sweaty and extremely nervous when I fly on vatsim but I’ll try and remember these tips for next time!
My tips for vatsim are, 1, don’t do short 1hr or less flight, do 1:30 to 2:30 flight, that will give you a change to catch up to the airplane if you fall behind. I’m my experience, both in real life and in sim, if you get behind the airplane it is vary difficult to get back in front of it unless you have some down time in cruse portion. 2, know the airplane if you are constantly saying what’s it doing you aren’t ready for vatsim. 3, know how to read and fly sids, stars and approachs, the magenta line is not always right so knowing how to fly them without lnav and vnav and with VS/or IASmode and heading select is crucial. Please don’t be that pilot that says, well the fmc told me to go that way.
Love the skiing example. Was thinking about going to snowworld Zoetermeer before my next flight because I live 10min away from it. Then your example came up and I had a good laugh. Thanks a lot for the videos they might be a bit older but they still help me a lot!
Some tips that has helped me in the past is, ALWAYS do proper briefing. It's so crucial and it helps you get more prepared during departure or arrival. Also, if available, ALWAYS take a look at the airports and procedures section on the vacc website of the country you plan to fly to. On there you will find practical information, and it will make your flight easier.
Yesterday I went i vatsim for the first time and did a flight and on arrival I got really nervous and frustrated as I don’t know what the Controller was saying so I disconnected lol... and today I did a new flight on vatsim and I was so calm and I didn’t get any instructions wrong as I pre planned what I was going to say on notes...!
Seriously , this is an important video. Once I had forgot to dail in the Squawk code because I was tensed literally i was sweating water bottles 😅 and time stamps are not working , thanks 🤓
"You can always disconnect" - I had disconnected countless times before my first flight, but returned the next day anyway. Remember, don't be afraid to ask the controller to repeat the message, because at the beginning understanding everything the controller says is almost impossible.
Really good video for pilots. Can I just stress 😊 that ATC do get stress because of certain areas which we need to retain like seperation. Being Less stress and nervous will make our lives 10x better and probably yours as well. ☺ Good video mate
As both a pilot and a controller, voice is more preferred on the controller side of VATSIM. However, text is totally fine, and most controllers (me included) usually don't have a problem with text pilots. Also remember that you can put "new pilot" in the remarks section when you are filing your flight plan. Hope this helps :D
If you'd like to use voice then the sound quality on the IVAO network is also superb, so I'd recommend to fly on there, with better sound quality until you get the hang of the phraseology. When you feel confident, you can move to vatsim. Or you could also use text as well, but that's up to you :)
I'd personally recommend voice, because using text is a lot slower and in my opinion kind of beats the purpose of having a network with a voice system. Sure it may be scary to start on voice, but if you just manage to get through that it will be a lot more fun and the complete picture will make a lot more sense in relation to the real world.
I've been flying on VATSIM for 15 years and I still get nervous on many approaches. So if you're new, just know that everything you're going through, we've ALL been there. The main tip I can give is to read your charts and follow them, but most importantly... LISTEN TO ATC INSTRUCTIONS!!!
Thank you so much for those tips. Today i tried to do my first flight but when ATC cleared me for a flight i did understand anything besides Hello and the squawk code, I panicked and left... So yeah. I will try to overcome my fear
About the ATC something I recommend is that. If you are workload saturated, do not hesitate and tell the ATC to standby. Remember: Aviate, Navigate, Comunicate.
Your videos helpful as always thanks for sharing. I don't know if you did that before, but can you show a picture about your keyboard. What you programmed where, what you find useful to have there. Thanks again.
Disconnect really helps, once the ATC at heathrow told me to hold at a point, when i chose the hold, the aircraft did a bit different hold, and then ATC asked me what i did, and i said doing a hold, and then he told me that i am not allowed to hold..
Hi Aviation Pro, love the vids, any idea when vatsim are going to do another new pilot event? I missed the last one but hope to make the next one. I do keep checking the events page but have not seen anything

How can a flight simulator stress you...!! Maybe if it's your first or second flight on the network you might be stressed, but once you have flown a bit more.... You cant't be really stressed... On the other hand, in real life maybe you as a pilot can be stressed in "x" situation, but that's not normal...
I also want to say that I really like and enjoy your content. But there are some videos that you are talking to us like if the flight simulator was real life and yup... you have my opinion about...
Well, some people are simply not the same as you right? It's not even about whether we take flightsim too serious, some people do actually find it stressful/nerve wrecking to talk to ATC or whatever. I had that too in the very beginning. Now it feels more like an excitement when it gets really busy (like during my last VATSIM flight), but remember that's not the same for everyone if they still want to achieve a nice experience ;). Thanks for watching!
I agree. I could understand some jitters the first few flights because you want to say things correctly (we've all been there), but in no time you'll grow tired of the shitty audio, people overtalking each other, and the "say agains" /pessimism
